Area - Angular momentum inequality for axisymmetric black holes

We prove the local inequality $A \geq 8π|J|$, where $A$ and $J$ are the area and angular momentum of any axially symmetric closed stable minimal surface in an axially symmetric maximal initial data. From this theorem it is proved that the inequality is satisfied for any surface on complete asymptotically flat maximal axisymmetric data. In particular it holds for marginal or event horizons of black holes.

Static solutions from the point of view of comparison geometry

We analyze (the harmonic map representation of) static solutions of the Einstein Equations in dimension three from the point of view of comparison geometry. We find simple monotonic quantities capturing sharply the influence of the Lapse function on the focussing of geodesics. This allows, in particular, a sharp estimation of the Laplacian of the distance function to a given (hyper)-surface. We apply the technique to asymptotically flat solutions with regular and connected horizons and, after a detailed analysis of the distance function to the horizon, we recover the Penrose inequality and the uniqueness of the Schwarzschild solution. The proof of this last result does not require proving conformal flatness at any intermediate step.

Geometric relations of stable minimal surfaces and applications

We establish some a priori geometric relations on stable minimal surfaces lying inside three-manifolds with scalar curvature uniformly bounded below. The relations are based on a slight generalization of a formula due to Castillon. We apply it to prove non-local rigidity results in the particular sense that they express how local isoperimetric properties in some region affect the local isoperimetric properties in any other region. We present applications to understand the notion of isoperimetric collapse on three-manifolds with scalar curvature uniformly bounded below.

Scalar curvature, isoperimetric collapse and General Relativity in the Constant Mean Curvature gauge

We discuss a set of relations, set in the form of results, conjectures and problems, between the L^{2}-norm of the Ricci curvature of a 3-manifold, the scalar curvature and the volume radius. We illustrate the scope of these relations with potential applications to the Einstein Constant Mean Curvature flow (or GR seen as a geometric flow of constant mean curvature), but we believe the framework has it own geometric interest.

The Constant Mean Curvature Einstein flow and the Bel-Robinson energy

We give an extensive treatment of the Constant Mean Curvature (CMC) Einstein flow from the point of view of the Bel-Robinson energies. The article, in particular, stresses on estimates showing how the Bel-Robinson energies and the volume of the evolving states control intrinsically the flow along evolution. The treatment is for flows over compact three-manifolds of arbitrary topological type, although the form of the estimates may vary depending on the Yamabe invariant of the manifold. We end up showing well posedness of the CMC Einstein flow with H^{3} x H^{2} regularity, and proving a criteria for a flow to be a long-time flow on manifolds with non-positive Yamabe invariant in terms only of the first order Bel-Robinson energy.

The ground state and the long-time evolution in the CMC Einstein flow

Let (g,K)(k) be a CMC (vacuum) Einstein flow over a compact three-manifold M with non-positive Yamabe invariant (Y(M)). As noted by Fischer and Moncrief, the reduced volume V(k)=(-k/3)^{3}Vol_{g(k)}(M) is monotonically decreasing in the expanding direction and bounded below by V_{\inf}=(-1/6)Y(M))^{3/2}. Inspired by this fact we define the ground state of the manifold M as "the limit" of any sequence of CMC states {(g_{i},K_{i})} satisfying: i. k_{i}=-3, ii. V_{i} --> V_{inf}, iii. Q_{0}((g_{i},K_{i}))< L where Q_{0} is the Bel-Robinson energy and L is any arbitrary positive constant. We prove that (as a geometric state) the ground state is equivalent to the Thurston geometrization of M. Ground states classify naturally into three types. We provide examples for each class, including a new ground state (the Double Cusp) that we analyze in detail. Finally consider a long time and cosmologically normalized flow (\g,\K)(s)=((-k/3)^{2}g,(-k/3))K) where s=-ln(-k) is in [a,\infty). We prove that if E_{1}=E_{1}((\g,\K))< L (where E_{1}=Q_{0}+Q_{1}, is the sum of the zero and first order Bel-Robinson energies) the flow (\g,\K)(s) persistently geometrizes the three-manifold M and the geometrization is the ground state if V --> V_{inf}.

On the asymptotic spectrum of the reduced volume in cosmological solutions of the Einstein equations

Say S is a compact three-manifold with non-positive Yamabe invariant. We prove that in any long time constant mean curvature Einstein flow over S, having bounded C^α space-time curvature at the cosmological scale, the reduced volume (-k/3)^{3}Vol(g(k)) (g(k) is the evolving spatial three-metric and k the mean curvature) decays monotonically towards the volume value of the geometrization in which the cosmologically normalized flow decays. In more basic terms, under the given assumptions, there is volume collapse in the regions where the injectivity radius collapses (i.e. tends to zero) in the long time. We conjecture that under the curvature assumption above the Thurston geometrization is the unique global attractor. We validate it in some special cases.

General K=-1 Friedman-Lemaître models and the averaging problem in cosmology

We introduce the notion of general K=-1 Friedman-Lemaître (compact) cosmologies and the notion of averaged evolution by means of an averaging map. We then analyze the Friedman-Lemaître equations and the role of gravitational energy on the universe evolution. We distinguish two asymptotic behaviors: radiative and mass gap. We discuss the averaging problem in cosmology for them through precise definitions. We then describe in quantitative detail the radiative case, stressing on precise estimations on the evolution of the gravitational energy and its effect in the universe's deceleration. Also in the radiative case we present a smoothing property which tells that the long time H^{3} x H^{2} stability of the flat K=-1 FL models implies H^{i+1} x H^{i} stability independently of how big the initial state was in H^{i+1} x H^{i}, i.e. there is long time smoothing of the space-time. Finally we discuss the existence of initial "big-bang" states of large gravitational energy, showing that there is no mathematical restriction to assume it to be low at the beginning of time.
