Tropical reductive groups and principal bundles on metric graphs

We propose an elementary tropical analogue of a reductive group that combines the datum of a Weyl group and the tropicalization of a fixed maximal torus. For the classical groups, as well as $G_2$, these tropical reductive groups admit descriptions as tropical matrix groups that resemble their classical counterparts. Employing this perspective, we introduce tropical principal bundles on metric graphs and study their explicit presentations as pushforwards of line bundles along covers with symmetries and extra data. Our main result identifies the essential skeleton of the moduli space of semistable principal bundles on a Tate curve with its tropical analogue.

Towards the tropicalization of reductive groups

Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero carrying the trivial valuation. In this article we discuss two candidates for what could be the tropicalization of $G$. Our first suggestion is the extended affine building associated to $G$. This perspective makes makes use of Berkovich's embedding of the extended affine building into the Berkovich analytic space $G^{\textrm{an}}$ and expands on work of Mumford by associating a toroidal bordification of $G$ to the choice of stacky fan in the building. We show that the natural retraction onto the building is compatible with the tropicalization map associated to a toroidal bordification. Our second suggestion is a Weyl chamber of $G$, a special instance of spherical tropicalization, where we think of $G$ as a spherical $G\times G$-variety with respect to left-right-multiplication. We show that the spherical tropicalization map may be identified with the toroidal tropicalization map associated to a wonderful compactification of $G$. This map also has a moduli-theoretic interpretation expanding on the compactifications of $G$ as moduli spaces of framed $\mathbb{G}_m$-equivariant principal bundles on chains of projective lines introduced by Martens and Thaddeus.

Log-concavity for independent sets of valuated matroids

Recently, several proofs of the Mason--Welsh conjecture for matroids have been found, which asserts the log-concavity of the sequence that counts independent sets of a given size. In this article we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials, developed by Br\"and\'en and Huh, to prove a generalization of the Mason-Welsh conjecture to the context of valuated matroids. In fact, we provide a log-concavity result in the more general setting of valuated discrete polymatroids, or equivalently, M-convex functions. Our approach is via the construction of a generic extension of a valuated matroid or M-convex function, so that the bases of the extension are related to the independent sets of the original matroid. We also provide a similar log-concavity result for valuated bimatroids, which, we believe, might be of independent interest.

Logarithmic concavity of bimatroids

A bimatroid is a matroid-like generalization of the collection of regular minors of a matrix. In this article, we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials to study the logarithmic concavity of natural sequences associated to bimatroids. Bimatroids can be used to characterize morphisms of matroids and this observation (originally due to Kung) allows us to prove a weak version of logarithmic concavity of the number of bases of a morphism of matroids. This is weaker than the original result by Eur and Huh; it nevertheless provides us with a new perspective on Mason's log-concavity conjecture for independent sets of matroids. We finally show that for realizable bimatroids, the regular minor polynomial is a volume polynomial. Applied to morphisms of matroids, this shows that the weak basis generating polynomial of a morphism is a volume polynomial; this confirms a conjecture of Eur--Huh for morphisms of nullity $\leq 1$ and gives an algebro-geometric explanation for Mason's log-concavity conjecture in the realizable case.

Semi-homogeneous vector bundles on abelian varieties: moduli spaces and their tropicalization

Let $A$ be an abelian variety with totally degenerate reduction over a non-Archimedean field. We describe the moduli space of semihomogeneous vector bundles on $A$ from the perspective of non-Archimedean uniformization and show that the essential skeleton may be identified with a tropical analogue of this moduli space. For $H=0$ our moduli space may be identified with the moduli space $M_{0,r}(A)$ of semistable vector bundles with vanishing Chern classes on $A$. In this case we construct a surjective analytic morphism from the character variety of the analytic fundamental group of $A$ onto $M_{0,r}(A)$, which naturally tropicalizes. One may view this construction as a non-Archimedean uniformization of $M_{0,r}(A)$.

Buildings, valuated matroids, and tropical linear spaces

Affine Bruhat--Tits buildings are geometric spaces extracting the combinatorics of algebraic groups. The building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ parametrizes flags of subspaces/lattices in or, equivalently, norms on a fixed finite-dimensional vector space, up to homothety. It has first been studied by Goldman and Iwahori as a piecewise-linear analogue of symmetric spaces. The space of seminorms compactifies the space of norms and admits a natural surjective restriction map from the Berkovich analytification of projective space that factors the natural tropicalization map. Inspired by Payne's result that the analytification is the limit of all tropicalizations, we show that the space of seminorms is the limit of all tropicalized linear embeddings $\iota\colon\mathbb{P}^r\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove a faithful tropicalization result for compactified linear spaces. The space of seminorms is in fact the tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable valuated matroid.

$P=W$ phenomena on abelian varieties

Let $X$ be a complex abelian variety. We prove an analogue of both the (cohomological) $P=W$ conjecture and the geometric $P=W$ conjecture connecting the finer topological structure of the Dolbeault moduli space of topologically trivial semistable Higgs bundles on $X$ and the Betti moduli space of characters of the fundamental group of $X$. The geometric heart of our approach is the spectral data morphism for Dolbeault moduli spaces on abelian varieties that naturally factors the Hitchin morphism and whose target is not an affine space of pluricanonical sections, but a suitable symmetric product.

Principal bundles on metric graphs: the $\mathrm{GL}_n$ case

Using the notion of a root datum of a reductive group $G$ we propose a tropical analogue of a principal $G$-bundle on a metric graph. We focus on the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_n$, i.e. the case of vector bundles. Here we give a characterization of vector bundles in terms of multidivisors and use this description to prove analogues of the Weil--Riemann--Roch theorem and the Narasimhan--Seshadri correspondence. We proceed by studying the process of tropicalization. In particular, we show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles on a Tate curve is isomorphic to a certain component of the moduli space of semistable tropical vector bundles on its dual metric graph.

Tropicalization of the universal Jacobian

In this article we provide a stack-theoretic framework to study the universal tropical Jacobian over the moduli space of tropical curves. We develop two approaches to the process of tropicalization of the universal compactified Jacobian over the moduli space of curves -- one from a logarithmic and the other from a non-Archimedean analytic point of view. The central result from both points of view is that the tropicalization of the universal compactified Jacobian is the universal tropical Jacobian and that the tropicalization maps in each of the two contexts are compatible with the tautological morphisms. In a sequel we will use the techniques developed here to provide explicit polyhedral models for the logarithmic Picard variety.

Tropicalization of toric prevarieties

The homogeneous spectrum of a multigraded finitely generated algebra (in the sense of Brenner-Schr\"oer) always admits an embedding into a toric variety that is not necessarily separated, a so-called toric prevariety. In order to have a convenient framework to study the tropicalization of homogeneous spectra we propose a tropicalization procedure for toric prevarieties and study its basic properties. With these tools at hand, we prove a generalization of Payne's and Foster--Gross--Payne's tropical limit theorem for divisorial schemes.

A non-Archimedean analogue of Teichm\"uller space and its tropicalization

In this article we use techniques from tropical and logarithmic geometry to construct a non-Archimedean analogue of Teichm\"uller space $\overline{\mathcal{T}}_g$ whose points are pairs consisting of a stable projective curve over a non-Archimedean field and a Teichm\"uller marking of the topological fundamental group of its Berkovich analytification. This construction is closely related to and inspired by the classical construction of a non-Archimedean Schottky space for Mumford curves by Gerritzen and Herrlich. We argue that the skeleton of non-Archimedean Teichm\"uller space is precisely the tropical Teichm\"uller space introduced by Chan-Melo-Viviani as a simplicial completion of Culler-Vogtmann Outer space. As a consequence, Outer space turns out to be a strong deformation retract of the locus of smooth Mumford curves in $\overline{\mathcal{T}}_g$.

Tropical double ramification loci

Motivated by the realizability problem for principal tropical divisors with a fixed ramification profile, we explore the tropical geometry of the double ramification locus in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$.There are two ways to define a tropical analogue of the double ramification locus: one as a locus of principal divisors, the other as a locus of finite effective ramified covers of a tree. We show that both loci admit a structure of a generalized cone complex in $M_{g,n}^{trop}$, with the latter contained in the former. We prove that the locus of principal divisors has cones of codimension zero in $M_{g,n}^{trop}$, while the locus of ramified covers has the expected codimension $g$. This solves the deformation-theoretic part of the realizability problem for principal divisors, reducing it to the so-called Hurwitz existence problem for covers of a fixed ramification type.

Divisorial motivic zeta functions for marked stable curves

We define a divisorial motivic zeta function for stable curves with marked points which agrees with Kapranov's motivic zeta function when the curve is smooth and unmarked. We show that this zeta function is rational, and give a formula in terms of the dual graph of the curve.

Abelian tropical covers

Let $\mathfrak{A}$ be a finite abelian group. In this article, we classify harmonic $\mathfrak{A}$-covers of a tropical curve $\Gamma$ (which allow dilation along edges and at vertices) in terms of the cohomology group of a suitably defined sheaf on $\Gamma$. We give a realizability criterion for harmonic $\mathfrak{A}$-covers by patching local monodromy data in an extended homology group on $\Gamma$. As an explicit example, we work out the case $\mathfrak{A}=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ and explain how realizability for such covers is related to the nowhere-zero flow problem from graph theory.

Skeletons of Prym varieties and Brill--Noether theory

We show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the Prym variety associated to an unramified double cover of an algebraic curve is naturally isomorphic (as a principally polarized tropical abelian variety) to the tropical Prym variety of the associated tropical double cover. This confirms a conjecture by Jensen and the first author. We prove a new upper bound on the dimension of the Prym-Brill-Noether locus for generic unramified double covers of curves with fixed even gonality on the base. Our methods also give a new proof of the classical Prym-Brill-Noether Theorem for generic unramified double covers that is originally due to Welters and Bertram.

Symmetric powers of algebraic and tropical curves: a non-Archimedean perspective

We show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the $d$-th symmetric power of a smooth projective algebraic curve $X$ is naturally isomorphic to the $d$-th symmetric power of the tropical curve that arises as the non-Archimedean skeleton of $X$. The retraction to the skeleton is precisely the specialization map for divisors. Moreover, we show that the process of tropicalization naturally commutes with the diagonal morphisms and the Abel-Jacobi map and we exhibit a faithful tropicalization for symmetric powers of curves. Finally, we prove a version of the Bieri-Groves Theorem that allows us, under certain tropical genericity assumptions, to deduce a new tropical Riemann-Roch-Theorem for the tropicalization of linear systems.

Realizability of tropical canonical divisors

We use recent results by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Moeller on compactifications of strata of abelian differentials to give a comprehensive solution to the realizability problem for effective tropical canonical divisors in equicharacteristic zero. Given a pair $(\Gamma, D)$ consisting of a stable tropical curve $\Gamma$ and a divisor $D$ in the canonical linear system on $\Gamma$, we give a purely combinatorial condition to decide whether there is a smooth curve $X$ over a non-Archimedean field whose stable reduction has $\Gamma$ as its dual tropical curve together with a effective canonical divisor $K_X$ that specializes to $D$. Along the way, we develop a moduli-theoretic framework to understand Baker's specialization of divisors from algebraic to tropical curves as a natural toroidal tropicalization map in the sense of Abramovich-Caporaso-Payne.
