Limit Theorems Under Several Linear Constraints

We study $n$ real-valued random variables subject to several linear constraints. Our main result is a weighted Central Limit Theorem, determining which linear combinations of these random variables are asymptotically normal as $n\to\infty$. Marginal distributions are also studied, showing that in the large $n$ limit random variables under linear constraints become i.i.d. exponential under a rescaling. Our novel approach is based on a complex de Finetti theorem revealing an underlying independence structure, as well as on entropy arguments.

Transition Analysis: From the Airy and Pearcey Kernels to the Sine Kernel

We study transitions between the three universal limiting kernels Airy, Pearcey and sine kernel, arising in Random Matrix Theory at edge, cusp and bulk points of the spectrum. Under appropriate rescalings, we provide complete asymptotic expansions of the extended Airy kernel and the extended Pearcey kernel approaching the extended sine kernel, expliciting the fluctuations.

Boundary Asymptotics of Non-Intersecting Brownian Motions: Pearcey, Airy and a Transition

We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions, corresponding to the eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ Hermitian Brownian motion. At the boundary of their limit shape we find that only three universal processes can arise: the Pearcey process close to merging points, the Airy line ensemble at edges and a novel determinantal process describing the transition from the Pearcey process to the Airy line ensemble. The three cases are distinguished by a remarkably simple integral condition. Our results hold under very mild assumptions, in particular we do not require any kind of convergence of the initial configuration as $n\to\infty$. Applications to largest eigenvalues of macro- and mesoscopic bulks and to random initial configurations are given.

Critical Behavior of Non-Intersecting Brownian Motions

We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions corresponding to initial configurations which have a vanishing density in the large $n$ limit at an interior point of the support. It is understood that the point of vanishing can propagate up to a critical time, and we investigate the nature of the microscopic space-time correlations near the critical point and critical time. We show that they are described either by the Pearcey process or by the Airy line ensemble, depending on whether a simple integral related to the initial configuration vanishes or not. Since the Airy line ensemble typically arises near edge points of the macroscopic density, its appearance in the interior of the spectrum is surprising. We explain this phenomenon by showing that, even though there is no gap of macroscopic size near the critical point, there is with high probability a gap of mesoscopic size. Moreover, we identify a path which follows the Airy$_2$ process.

Random Moment Problems under Constraints

We investigate moment sequences of probability measures on $E\subset\mathbb{R}$ under constraints of certain moments being fixed. This corresponds to studying sections of $n$-th moment spaces, i.e. the spaces of moment sequences of order $n$. By equipping these sections with the uniform or more general probability distributions, we manage to give for large $n$ precise results on the (probabilistic) barycenters of moment space sections and the fluctuations of random moments around these barycenters. The measures associated to the barycenters belong to the Bernstein-Szegő class and show strong universal behavior. We prove Gaussian fluctuations and moderate and large deviations principles. Furthermore, we demonstrate how fixing moments by a constraint leads to breaking the connection between random moments and random matrices.

Boundaries of sine kernel universality for Gaussian perturbations of Hermitian matrices

We explore the boundaries of sine kernel universality for the eigenvalues of Gaussian perturbations of large deterministic Hermitian matrices. Equivalently, we study for deterministic initial data the time after which Dyson's Brownian motion exhibits sine kernel correlations. We explicitly describe this time span in terms of the limiting density and rigidity of the initial points. Our main focus lies on cases where the initial density vanishes at an interior point of the support. We show that the time to reach universality becomes larger if the density vanishes faster or if the initial points show less rigidity.

Universality at weak and strong non-Hermiticity beyond the elliptic Ginibre ensemble

We consider non-Gaussian extensions of the elliptic Ginibre ensemble of complex non-Hermitian random matrices by fixing the trace $\operatorname{Tr}(XX^*)$ of the matrix $X$ with a hard or soft constraint. These ensembles have correlated matrix entries and non-determinantal joint densities of the complex eigenvalues. We study global and local bulk statistics in these ensembles, in particular in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity introduced by Fyodorov, Khoruzhenko and Sommers. Here, the support of the limiting measure collapses to the real line. This limit was motivated by physics applications and interpolates between the celebrated sine and Ginibre kernel. Our results constitute a first proof of universality of the interpolating kernel. Furthermore, in the limit of strong non-Hermiticity, where the support of the limiting measure remains an ellipse, we obtain local Ginibre statistics in the bulk of the spectrum.

Universality in Random Moment Problems

Let $\mathcal{M}_n(E)$ denote the set of vectors of the first $n$ moments of probability measures on $E\subset\mathbb{R}$ with existing moments. The investigation of such moment spaces in high dimension has found considerable interest in the recent literature. For instance, it has been shown that a uniformly distributed moment sequence in $\mathcal M_n([0,1])$ converges in the large $n$ limit to the moment sequence of the arcsine distribution. In this article we provide a unifying viewpoint by identifying classes of more general distributions on $\mathcal{M}_n(E)$ for $E=[a,b],\,E=\mathbb{R}_+$ and $E=\mathbb{R}$, respectively, and discuss universality problems within these classes. In particular, we demonstrate that the moment sequence of the arcsine distribution is not universal for $E$ being a compact interval. On the other hand, on the moment spaces $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb{R}_+)$ and $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb{R})$ the random moment sequences governed by our distributions exhibit for $n\to\infty$ a universal behaviour: The first $k$ moments of such a random vector converge almost surely to the first $k$ moments of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution (half line) and Wigner's semi-circle distribution (real line). Moreover, the fluctuations around the limit sequences are Gaussian. We also obtain moderate and large deviations principles and discuss relations of our findings with free probability.

Edge Statistics for a Class of Repulsive Particle Systems

We study a class of interacting particle systems on $\mathbb{R}$ which was recently investigated by F. Götze and the second author [GV14]. These ensembles generalize eigenvalue ensembles of Hermitian random matrices by allowing different interactions between particles. Although these ensembles are not known to be determinantal one can use the stochastic linearization method of [GV14] to represent them as averages of determinantal ones. Our results describe the transition between universal behavior in the regime of the Tracy-Widom law and non-universal behavior for large deviations of the rightmost particle. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the transition that occurs in the regime of moderate deviations, is provided. We also compare our results with the corresponding ones obtained recently for determinantal ensembles [Sch15, EKS15]. In particular, we discuss how the averaging effects the leading order behavior in the regime of large deviations. In the analyis of the averaging procedure we use detailed asymptotic information on the behavior of Christoffel-Darboux kernels that is uniform for perturbative families of weights. Such results have been provided by K. Schubert, K. Schüler and the authors in [KSSV14].

Global Asymptotics for the Christoffel-Darboux Kernel of Random Matrix Theory

The investigation of universality questions for local eigenvalue statistics continues to be a driving force in the theory of Random Matrices. For Matrix Models [53] the method of orthogonal polynomials can be used and the asymptotics of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel [59] become the key for studying universality. In this paper the existing results on the CD-kernel will be extended in two directions. Firstly, in order to analyze the transition from the universal to the non-universal regime, we provide leading order asymptotics that are global rather than local. This allows e.g. to describe the moderate deviations for the largest eigenvalues of unitary ensembles ($β$ = 2), where such a transition occurs. Secondly, our asymptotics will be uniform under perturbations of the probability measure that defines the matrix ensemble. Such information is useful for the analysis of a different type of ensembles [25], which is not known to be determinantal and for which the method of orthogonal polynomials cannot be used directly. The just described applications of our results are formulated in this paper but will be proved elsewhere. As a byproduct of our analysis we derive first order corrections for the 1-point correlation functions of unitary ensembles in the bulk. Our proofs are based on the nonlinear steepest descent method [20]. They follow closely [17] and incorporate improvements introduced in [36, 64]. The presentation is self-contained except for a number of general facts from Random Matrix theory and from the theory of singular integral operators.

Empirical Spacings of Unfolded Eigenvalues

We study random points on the real line generated by the eigenvalues in unitary invariant random matrix ensembles or by more general repulsive particle systems. As the number of points tends to infinity, we prove convergence of the empirical distribution of nearest neighbor spacings. We extend existing results for the spacing distribution in two ways. On the one hand, we believe the empirical distribution to be of more practical relevance than the so far considered expected distribution. On the other hand, we use the unfolding, a non-linear rescaling, which transforms the ensemble such that the density of particles is asymptotically constant. This allows to consider all empirical spacings, where previous results were restricted to a tiny fraction of the particles. Moreover, we prove bounds on the rates of convergence. The main ingredient for the proof, a strong bulk universality result for correlation functions in the unfolded setting including optimal rates, should be of independent interest.

Local universality of repulsive particle systems and random matrices

We study local correlations of certain interacting particle systems on the real line which show repulsion similar to eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices. Although the new particle system does not seem to have a natural spectral or determinantal representation, the local correlations in the bulk coincide in the limit of infinitely many particles with those known from random Hermitian matrices; in particular they can be expressed as determinants of the so-called sine kernel. These results may provide an explanation for the appearance of sine kernel correlation statistics in a number of situations which do not have an obvious interpretation in terms of random matrices.

Particle Systems with Repulsion Exponent $β$ and Random Matrices

We consider a class of particle systems generalizing the $β$-Ensembles from random matrix theory. In these new ensembles, particles experience repulsion of power $β>0$ when getting close, which is the same as in the $β$-Ensembles. For distances larger than zero, the interaction is allowed to differ from those present for random eigenvalues. We show that the local bulk correlations of the $β$-Ensembles, universal in random matrix theory, also appear in these new ensembles.
