Cosmology with a long-range repulsive force

We discuss the properties of a cosmology dominated by a charged scalar field with a repulsive, long-range self-interaction. The interaction, in the form of a vector field with a tiny mass, can have a dramatic effect on the evolution of the universe, with interesting consequences -- including in some cases accelerated expansion. One characteristic of the model is an oscillating deceleration parameter, which would potentially allow it to be distinguished from other scalar field models such as quintessence.

Cosmology with a long range repulsive force

We consider a class of cosmological models in which the universe is filled with a (non-electric) charge density that repels itself by means of a force carried by a vector boson with a tiny mass. When the vector's mass depends upon other fields, the repulsive interaction gives rise to an electromagnetic barrier which prevents these fields from driving the mass to zero. This can modify the cosmology dramatically. We present a very simple realization of this idea in which the vector's mass arises from a scalar field. The electromagnetic barrier prevents this field from rolling down its potential and thereby leads to accelerated expansion.

Small x divergences in the Similarity RG approach to LF QCD

We study small x divergences in boost invariant similarity renormalization group approach to light-front QCD in a heavy quark-antiquark state. With the boost invariance maintained, the infrared divergences do not cancel out in the physical states, contrary to previous studies where boost invariance was violated by a choice of a renormalization scale. This may be an indication that the zero mode, or nontrivial light-cone vacuum structure, might be important for recovering full Lorentz invariance.

Small x divergences in a heavy quark-antiquark state

With the current state of similarity renormalisation group approach to light-front QCD, it is possible to address with a degree of generality the issue of light-cone zero modes. We find, contrary to earlier results in a less general framework, that infrared divergences associated with the zero modes do not cancel out in a color singlet heavy quark-antiquark states, except for the lowest order in the nonrelativistic expansion.

An attempt to do without dark matter

The discrepancy between dynamical mass measures of objects such as galaxies and the observed distribution of luminous matter in the universe is typically explained by invoking an unseen ``dark matter'' component. Dark matter must necessarily be non-baryonic. We introduce a simple hypothesis to do away with the necessity for dark matter by introducing an additional non-gravitational force coupled to baryon number as a charge. We compare this hypothesis to Milgrom's Modified Newtonian Dynamics. The model ultimately fails when confronted with observation, but it fails in an interesting way.

Back reaction of a long range force on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background

It is possible that there may exist long-range forces in addition to gravity. In this paper we construct a simple model for such a force based on exchange of a massless scalar field and analyze its effect on the evolution of a homogeneous Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. The presence of such an interaction leads to an equation of state characterized by positive pressure and to resonant particle production similar to that observed in preheating scenarios.

Note on restoring manifest rotational symmetry in hyperfine and fine structure in light-front QED

We study the part of the renormalized, cutoff QED light-front Hamiltonian that does not change particle number. The Hamiltonian contains interactions that must be treated in second-order bound state perturbation theory to obtain hyperfine structure. We show that a simple unitary transformation leads directly to the familiar Breit-Fermi spin-spin and tensor interactions, which can be treated in degenerate first-order bound-state perturbation theory, thus simplifying analytic light-front QED calculations. To the order in momenta we need to consider, this transformation is equivalent to a Melosh rotation. We also study how the similarity transformation affects spin-orbit interactions.

Bound state studies in light-front QCD of mesons containing at least one heavy quark

We present a QCD bound-state calculation based on a renormalization group-improved light-front Hamiltonian formalism. The QCD Hamiltonian is determined to second order in the coupling, and it includes two-body confining interactions. We make a momentum expansion, obtaining an equal-time-like Schrodinger equation. This is solved for quark-antiquark constituent states, and we obtain a set of self-consistent parameters by fitting B mesons. Applying the approach to charmonium spectra leads to a prediction of the hyperfine splitting between J/$ψ$(1S) and $η_c$(1S) which is in good agreement with experiment.

Initial bound state studies in light-front QCD

We present the first numerical QCD bound state calculation based on a renormalization group-improved light-front Hamiltonian formalism. The QCD Hamiltonian is determined to second order in the coupling, and it includes two-body confining interactions. We make a momentum expansion, obtaining an equal-time-like Schrodinger equation. This is solved for quark-antiquark constituent states, and we obtain a set of self-consistent parameters by fitting B meson spectra.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Light-Front QCD

This paper consists of an overview of the discussions on chiral symmetry breaking followed by a transcript of the discussions themselves. (Based on discussions at ``Theory of Hadrons and Light-Front QCD,'' Polana Zgorzelisko, Poland, August 1994.)
