Stellar Populations in the Magellanic Clouds

We present the first results of our study of stellar populations in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds based on multiband WFPC2 observations of "random" fields taken as part of the "pure parallel" program carried out by the Space Telescope Science Institute as a service to the community.

Low Mass Pre-Main Sequence stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud - II: HST-WFPC2 observations of two fields in the 30 Doradus region

As a part of an ongoing effort to characterise the young stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present HST-WFPC2 broad and narrow band imaging of two fields with recent star formation activity in the Tarantula region. A population of objects with Halpha and/or Balmer continuum excess was identified. On account of the intense Halpha emission (equivalent widths up to several tens of Angstroms), its correlation with the Balmer continuum excess and the stars' location on the HR diagram, we interpret them as low mass (~1-2 Mo) Pre-Main Sequence stars. In this framework, the data show that coeval high and low mass stars have significantly different spatial distributions, implying that star formation processes for different ranges of stellar masses are rather different and/or require different initial conditions. We find that the overall slope of the mass function of the young population is somewhat steeper than the classical Salpeter value and that the star formation density of this young component is 0.2-0.4 Mo/yr/kpc2, i.e. intermediate between the value for an active spiral disk and that of a starburst region. The uncertainties associated with the determination of the slope of the mass function and the star formation density are thoroughly discussed.

Error Analysis for Dual-Beam Optical Linear Polarimetry

In this paper we present an error analysis for polarimetric data obtained with dual-beam instruments. After recalling the basic concepts, we introduce the analytical expressions for the uncertainties of polarization degree and angle. These are then compared with the results of Monte-Carlo simulations, which are also used to briefly discuss the statistical bias. Then we approach the problem of background subtraction and the errors introduced by a non-perfect Wollaston prism, flat-fielding and retarder plate defects. We finally investigate the effects of instrumental polarization and we propose a simple test to detect and characterize it. The application of this method to real VLT-FORS1 data has shown the presence of a spurious polarization, which is of the order of 1.5% at the edges of the field of view. The cause of this effect has been identified with the presence of rather curved lenses in the collimator, combined with the non complete removal of reflections by the coatings. This problem is probably common to all focal-reducer instruments equipped with a polarimetric mode. An additional spurious and asymmetric polarization field, whose cause is still unclear, is visible in the B band.

VLT-FORS1 Imaging Polarimetry of M83 (NGC 5236) - I. Search for Light Echoes from Historical Supernovae

We have used FORS1 at the ESO VLT to search for light echoes in imaging polarimetry from four historical supernovae in the face-on nearby spiral galaxy M83 (NGC 5236). No echoes were detected around our targets (SN 1923A, SN 1945B, SN 1950B and SN 1957D). This implies that the interstellar medium in their environs is rather tenuous (a few particles/cm^3), possibly as a result of previous supernova explosions that could have cleared the immediate vicinities of our targets. The merits and limitations of searching for light echoes in imaging polarimetry are discussed. From the photometry of the sources detected at the supernova locations, we estimate star cluster masses of 720, 400, 300 Mo for the cluster progenitors of SN 1957D, SN 1923A, and SN 1950B, respectively, and an upper limit of few tens of solar masses for SN 1945B.

The Metallicity dependence of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation: methodology and results

We present the results of an observational campaign undertaken to assess the influence of the iron content on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. Our data indicate that this dependence is not well represented by a simple linear relation. Rather, the behaviour is markedly non monotonic, with the correction peaking at about solar metallicity and declining for higher and lower values of [Fe/H].

RASS-SDSS galaxy cluster survey. II. A unified picture of the Cluster Luminosity Function

We constructed the composite luminosity function (LF) of clusters of galaxies in the five SDSS photometric bands u,g,r,i and z from the RASS-SDSS galaxy cluster catalog. Background and foreground galaxies are subtracted using both a local and a global background correction to take in account the presence of large scale structures and variations from field to field, respectively. The composite LF clearly shows two components: a bright-end LF with a classical slope of -1.25 in each photometric band, and a faint-end LF much steeper (-2.1 <= α<= -1.6) in the dwarf galaxy region. The observed upturn of the faint galaxies has a location ranging from -16 +5log(h) in the g band to -18.5 +5log(h) in the z band. To study the universality of the cluster LF we compare the individual cluster LFs with the composite luminosity function. We notice that, in agreement with the composite LF, a single Schechter component is not a good fit for the majority of the clusters. We fit a Schechter function to the bright-end of the individual clusters LFs in the magnitude region brighter than the observed upturn of the dwarf galaxies. We observe that the distributions of the derived parameters is close to a Gaussian around the value of the composite bright-end LF parameters with a dispersion compatible with the statistical errors. We conclude that the bright-end of the galaxy clusters is universal. To study the behavior of the individual faint-end LF we define the Dwarf to Giant galaxy Ratio (DGR) of the single clusters. We notice that the distribution of DGR has a spread much larger than the statistical errors. Our conclusion is that the cluster luminosity function is not universal since the cluster faint-end, differently from the bright-end, varies from cluster to cluster.

The Initial Conditions to Star Formation: Low Mass Stars at Low Metallicity

We have measured the present accretion rate of roughly 800 low-mass (~1-1.4 Mo) pre-Main Sequence stars in the field of SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The stars with statistically significant Balmer continuum and Halpha excesses are measured to have accretion rates larger than about 1.5x10^{-8} Mo/yr at an age of 12-16 Myrs. For comparison, the time scale for disk dissipation observed in the Galaxy is of the order of 6 Myrs.

Metal abundances in extremely distant Galactic old open clusters. I. Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1

We report on high resolution spectroscopy of four giant stars in the Galactic old open clusters Berkeley~29 and Saurer~1 obtained with HIRES at the Keck telescope. These two clusters possess the largest galactocentric distances insofar known for open star clusters, and therefore are crucial objects to probe the chemical pattern and evolution of the outskirts of the Galactic disk. We find that $[Fe/H]=-0.38\pm0.14$ and $[Fe/H]=-0.44\pm0.18$ for Saurer 1 and Berkeley~29, respectively. Based on these data, we first revise the fundamental parameters of the clusters, and then discuss them in the context of the Galactic disk radial abundance gradients. Both clusters seem to significantly deviate from the general trend, suggesting that the outer part of the Galactic disk underwent a completely different evolution compared to the inner disk. In particular Berkeley~29 is clearly associated with the Monoceros stream, while Saurer~1 exhibits very different properties. The abundance ratios suggest that the chemical evolution of the outer disk was dominated by the Galactic halo.

Low-Mass Pre-Main Sequence Stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud - III: Accretion Rates from HST-WFPC2 Observations

We have measured the present accretion rate of roughly 800 low-mass (~1-1.4 Mo) pre-Main Sequence stars in the field of Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, Z~0.3 Zo). It is the first time that this fundamental parameter for star formation is determined for low-mass stars outside our Galaxy. The Balmer continuum emission used to derive the accretion rate positively correlates with the Halpha excess. Both these phenomena are believed to originate from accretion from a circumstellar disk so that their simultaneous detection provides an important confirmation of the pre-Main Sequence nature of the Halpha and UV excess objects, which are likely to be the LMC equivalent of Galactic Classical TTauri stars. The stars with statistically significant excesses are measured to have accretion rates larger than 1.5x10^{-8}Mo/yr at an age of 12-16 Myrs. For comparison, the time scale for disk dissipation observed in the Galaxy is of the order of 6 Myrs. Moreover, the oldest Classical TTauri star known in the Milky Way (TW Hydrae, with 10 Myrs of age) has a measured accretion rate of only 5x10^{-10} Mo/yr, ie 30 times less than what we measure for stars at a comparable age in the LMC. Our findings indicate that metallicity plays a major role in regulating the formation of low-mass stars.

The star cluster Collinder 232 in the Carina complex and its relation to Trumpler 14/16

In this paper we present and analyze new CCD $UBVRI$ photometry down to $V \approx$ 21 in the region of the young open cluster Collinder 232, located in the Carina spiral arm, and discuss its relationship to Trumpler 14 and Trumpler 16, the two most prominent young open clusters located in the core of NGC 3372 (the Carina Nebula). First of all we study the extinction pattern in the region. We find that the total to selective absorption ratio $R_V$ differs from cluster to cluster, being $3.48\pm0.11$, $4.16\pm0.07$ and $3.73\pm0.01$ for Trumpler 16, Trumpler 14 and Collinder 232, respectively. Then we derive individual reddenings and intrinsic colours and magnitudes using the method devised by Romaniello et al. (2002). Ages, age spreads and distances are then estimated by comparing the Colour Magnitude Diagrams and the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram with post and pre-main sequence tracks and isochrones. We find that Trumpler 14 and Collinder 232 lie at the same distance from the Sun (about 2.5 kpc), whereas Trumpler 16 lies much further out, at about 4 kpc from the Sun. As for the age, we find that Trumpler 16 is older than both Trumpler 14 and Collinder 232. For all the clusters we indicate the existence of a significant age dispersion, whose precise value is hampered by our inability to properly distinguish members from non-members. We finally suggest that Collinder 232 is a physical aggregate and provide estimates of its basic parameters.

The Effect of Metallicity on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation

We present preliminary results of an observational campaign devoted at establishing the influence of chemical composition on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. The data are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on non-linear convective models, suggesting a fairly strong dependence of the Period-Luminosity relation on metallicity in the sense of more metal rich stars being intrinsically fainter than otherwise expected. Our data indicate that the error on the inferred distance can be as large as 10% if the role of metallicity is neglected.

Accurate Stellar Population Studies from Multiband Photometric Observations

We present a new technique based on multi-band near ultraviolet and optical photometry to measure both the stellar intrinsic properties, ie luminosity and effective temperature, and the interstellar dust extinction along the line of sight to hundreds of stars per square arcminute. The yield is twofold. On the one hand, the resulting reddening map has a very high spatial resolution, of the order of a few arcseconds, and can be quite effectively used in regions where the interstellar material is patchy, thus producing considerable differential extinction on small angular scales. On the other hand, combining the photometric information over a wide baseline in wavelength provides an accurate determination of temperature and luminosity for thousands of stars. As a test case, we present the results for the region around Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud imaged with the WFPC2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope.

TTauri Stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud: a combined HST and VLT effort

The combination of the unprecedented spatial resolution attainable with WFPC2 on board HST and of the large collecting area of the VLT makes it possible to study in detail the low mass pre-Main Sequence stars in galaxies other than our own. Here we present the results of our studies of two star forming environments in our closest galactic neighbor, the Large Magellanic Cloud: the region around Supernova 1987A and the double cluster NGC 1850.

Young Stellar Populations Around SN1987A

We present the results of a study of the stellar population in a region of 30 pc radius around SN1987A, based on an analysis of multi-band HST-WFPC2 images. The effective temperature, radius and, possibly, reddening of each star were determined for 21,955 stars by fitting the measured broad band magnitudes to the ones calculated with model atmospheres. In addition, we have identified all stars with Halpha equivalent widths in excess of 8 A, amounting to a total of 492 stars. An inspection to the HR diagram reveals the presence of several generations of young stars, with ages between 1 and 150 Myrs, superposed on a much older field population (0.6-6 Gyrs). A substantial fraction of young stars have ages around 12 Myrs which is the stellar generation coeval to SN 1987A progenitor. The youngest stars in the field appear to be strong-line T Tauri stars. This constitute the first positive detection of low mass (about 1-2 Mo) Pre Main Sequence (PMS) stars outside the Milky Way. Their positions in the HR diagram appear to require that star formation in the LMC occurs with accretion rates about 10 times higher than in the Milky Way, i.e. ~10^{-4} Mo/yr. SN1987A appears to belong to a loose, young cluster 12+/-2 Myrs old, in which the slope of the present mass function is almost identical to Salpeter's for masses above 3 Mo, but becomes much flatter for lower masses. On a large scale, we find that the spatial distribution of massive stars and low-mass PMS stars are conclusively different. This results casts doubts on the validity of an IMF concept on a small scale (say, less than 10 pc). A preliminary analysis, done for the whole field as a single entity, shows that the IMF slope for the young population present over the entire region is steeper than Gamma ~ -1.7.

HST observations of the LMC field around SN87A: distance determinations with Red Clump and Tip of the Red Giant Branch stars

We have used HST-WFPC2 multiband observations of a field around SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud to measure its distance from the Sun. The observations allowed us to carefully determine the interstellar extinction along the line of sight to a large number of stars and to measure the LMC distance by using two stellar distance indicators: the Red Clump and the Tip of the Red Giant Branch. From an application of the Red Clump method we obtain a distance modulus (m-M)o,rc(LMC)=18.59+-0.04+-0.08 mag (statistical plus systematic error), in good agreement with the distance derived by using the Tip of the Red Giant Branch stars, namely (m-M)o,trgb(LMC)=18.69+-0.25+-0.06 mag (statistical plus systematic error). Both values agree well with the distance to the SN 1987A as determined from a study of its inner ring fluorescent echo ((m-M)(SN87A)=18.55+-0.05 mag, Panagia 1998), thus excluding distance moduli lower than 18.43 to a 99.7% significance level. Differences with respect to previous results obtained using the same distance indicators are discussed.

HST study of the Stellar Populations within 30 pc of SN 1987A

We have studied the stellar populations in a region of 30 pc around SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud using multi-band HST-WFPC2 images. The effective temperature, luminosity and reddening of each detected star were determined by fitting the measured broad band magnitudes to the ones calculated with model atmospheres. The resulting HR diagram reveals the presence of stars with ages between 1 and 150 Myrs, superposed on a much older field population. The youngest stars in the field appear to be T Tauri stars, characterized by strong Halpha excesses. The Star Formation Rate has increased monotonically in the last 8 Gyrs and the star formation activity is still very high at present. Young stars of low and high mass have different spatial distributions. The latter ones are strongly concentrated in the vicinities of the Supernova, whereas the previous ones are more evenly distributed on the field. Hence, the Mass Function varies on a scale of a few parsecs. However, averaging over the entire area, one can define an Initial Mass Function, well fitted by a power-law with a slope alpha<-2.55. The uncertainty on the IMF due to incompleteness in identifying T Tauri stars is discussed.
