CP Violation in the Minimal Supersymmetric Seesaw Model

We study CP violation in the lepton sector of the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with three generations of massive singlet neutrinos with Yukawa couplings $Y_ν$ to lepton doublets, in a minimal seesaw model for light neutrino masses and mixing. This model contains six physical CP-violating parameters, namely the phase $δ$ observable in oscillations between light neutrino species, two Majorana phases $ϕ_{1,2}$ that affect $ββ_{0 ν}$ decays, and three independent phases appearing in ${Y_ν}{Y_ν}^\dagger$, that control the rate of leptogenesis. Renormalization of the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters induces observable CP violation at low energies, including T-odd asymmetries in polarized $μ\to eee$ and $τ\to \ell \ell \ell$ decays, as well as lepton electric dipole moments. In the leading-logarithmic approximation in which the massive singlet neutrinos are treated as degenerate, these low-energy observables are sensitive via ${Y_ν}^\dagger{Y_ν}$ to just one combination of the leptogenesis and light-neutrino phases. We present numerical results for the T-odd asymmetry in polarized $μ\to eee$ decay, which may be accessible to experiment, but the lepton electric dipole moments are very small in this approximation. To the extent that the massive singlet neutrinos are not degenerate, low-energy observables become sensitive also to two other combinations of leptogenesis and light-neutrino phases, in this minimal supersymmetric seesaw model.

Lepton Electric Dipole Moments in Non-Degenerate Supersymmetric Seesaw Models

In the context of supersymmetric seesaw models of neutrino masses with non-degenerate heavy neutrinos, we show that Dirac Yukawa interactions N^c_i (Y_nu)_{ij} L_j H_2 induce large threshold corrections to the slepton soft masses via renormalization. While still yielding rates for lepton-flavour-violating processes below the experimental bounds, these contributions may increase the muon and electron electric dipole moments d_mu and d_e by several orders of magnitude. In the leading logarithmic approximation, this is due to three additional physical phases in Y_nu, one of which also contributes to leptogenesis. The naive relation d_mu/d_e\approx -m_mu/m_e is violated strongly in the case of successful phenomenological textures for Y_nu, and the values of d_mu and/or d_e may be within the range of interest for the future experiments.

Neutrino Mass, Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment, and Lepton Flavor Nonconservation

If the generating mechanism for neutrino mass is to account for both the newly observed muon anomalous magnetic moment as well as the present experimental bounds on lepton flavor nonconservation, then the neutrino mass matrix should be almost degenerate and the underlying physics be observable at future colliders. We illustrate this assertion in two specific examples, and show that $Γ(μ\to e γ)/m_μ^5$, $Γ(τ\to e γ)/m_τ^5$, and $Γ(τ\to μγ) /m_τ^5$ are in the ratio $(Δm^2)_{sol}^2/2$, $(Δm^2)_{sol}^2 /2$, and $(Δm^2)_{atm}^2$ respectively, where the $Δm^2$ parameters are those of solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations and bimaximal mixing has been assumed.

Phenomenology of the Neutrino-Mass-Giving Higgs Triplet and the Low-Energy Seesaw Violation of Lepton Number

Small realistic Majorana neutrino masses can be generated via a Higgs triplet $(ξ^{++}, ξ^+, ξ^0)$ without having energy scales larger than $M_*={\cal O}(1)$ TeV in the theory. The large effective mass scale $Λ$ in the well-known seesaw neutrino-mass operator $Λ^{-1} (LLΦΦ)$ is naturally obtained with $Λ\sim M_*^2/μ,$ where $μ$ is a {\it small} scale of lepton-number violation. In theories with large extra dimensions, the smallness of $μ$ is naturally obtained by the mechanism of ``shining'' if the number of extra dimensions $n\ge 3.$ We study here the Higgs phenomenology of this model, where the spontaneous violation of lepton number is treated as an external source from extra dimensions. The observable decays $ξ^{++} \to l_i^+l_j^+$ will determine directly the magnitudes of the $\{ij\}$ elements of the neutrino mass matrix. The decays $ξ^+ \to W^+ J^0$ and $ξ^0 \to Z J^0$, where $J^0$ is the massless Goldstone boson (Majoron), are also possible, but of special importance is the decay $ξ^0 \to J^0 J^0$ which provides stringent constraints on the allowed parameter space of this model. Based on the current neutrino data, we also predict observable rates of $μ-e$ conversion in nuclei.

Enhancement of Radiatively Induced Magnetic Moment Form-Factors of Muon: an Effective Lagrangian Approach

Using an effective lagrangian approach, we identify a class of models in which the loop-induced magnetic moment form-factors of muon are enhanced by possibly large factors (Λ^2_F/Λ^2)(m_τ/m_μ)\ln(m_τ^2/Λ^2) or (Λ^2_F/Λ^2)\ln(m_μ^2/Λ^2), where Λis the scale of new physics and Λ_F is the Fermi scale. These follow from left- and right-chirality mixing dimension-8 operators which for relatively small Λ, as required to explain the new (g_μ-2) measurement, dominate over dimension-6 operators. Thus significant enhancement of new physics contributions to (g_μ-2) and, in the presence of intergenerational couplings, also to the μ\to eγdecay rate is possible. We discuss the compatibility of the (g_μ-2) and μ\to eγexperimental data in this case and comment on the enhancement of the electron anomalous magnetic moment. An explicit model is presented to illustrate the general results.

Three Active and Two Sterile Neutrinos in an E_6 Model of Diquark Baryogenesis

In the U(1)_N extension of the supersymmetric standard model with E_6 particle content, the heavy singlet superfield N may decay into a quark and a diquark as well as an antiquark and an antidiquark, thus creating a baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We show how the three doublet and two singlet neutrinos in this model acquire mass from physics at the TeV scale without the benefit of using N as a heavy right-handed neutrino. Specifically, the active neutrinos get masses via the bilinear term μLX^c which conserves R-parity, and via the nonzero masses of the sterile neutrinos. We predict fixed properties of the extra Z' boson, as well as the new lepton doublets X and X^c, and the observation of diquark resonances at hadron colliders in this scenario.

Allowable Low-Energy E_6 Subgroups from Leptogenesis

There are only two viable low-energy $E_6$ subgroups: $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_N$ or $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)'_R \times U(1)_{Y_L + Y'_R}$, which would not erase any preexisting lepton asymmetry of the Universe that may have been created by the decay of heavy singlet (right-handed) neutrinos or any other mechanism. They are also the two most favored $E_6$ subgroups from a recent analysis of present neutral-current data. We study details of the leptogenesis, as well as some salient experimental signatures of the two models.

Relaxing b\to sγConstraints on the Supersymmetric Particle Mass Spectrum

We consider the radiative decay b \to s γin a supersymmetric extension of the standard model of particle interactions, where the $b$-quark mass is entirely radiative in origin. This is accomplished by the presence of nonholomorphic soft supersymmetry breaking terms in the Lagrangian. As a result, the contributions to the b \to s γamplitude from the charged Higgs boson and the charginos/neutralinos are suppressed by 1/\tan^2βand {\cal O}(α/α_s) respectively, allowing these particles to be lighter than in the usual supersymmetric model. Their radiatively generated couplings differ from the usual tree-level ones and change the collider phenomenology drastically. We also study how this scenario may be embedded into a larger framework, such as supersymmetric SU(5) grand unification.

Low-Scale Axion from Large Extra Dimensions

The mass of the axion and its decay rate are known to depend only on the scale of Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking, which is constrained by astrophysics and cosmology to be between $10^9$ and $10^{12}$ GeV. We propose a new mechanism such that this effective scale is preserved and yet the fundamental breaking scale of $U(1)_{PQ}$ is very small (a kind of inverse seesaw) in the context of large extra dimensions with an anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in our brane. Unlike any other (invisible) axion model, there are now possible collider signatures in this scenario.

Verifiable Model of Neutrino Masses from Large Extra Dimensions

We propose a new scenario of neutrino masses with a Higgs triplet $(ξ^{++},ξ^+,ξ^0)$ in a theory of large extra dimensions. Lepton number violation in a distant brane acts as the source of a very small trilinear coupling of $ξ$ to the standard Higgs doublet in our brane. Small realistic Majorana neutrino masses are \underline{naturally} obtained with the fundamental scale $M_* \sim {\cal O}(1)$ TeV, foretelling the possible discovery of $ξ$ $(m_ξ\lsim M_*)$ at future colliders. Decays of $ξ^{++}$ into same-sign dileptons are fixed by the neutrino mass matrix. Observation of $μ-e$ conversion in nuclei is predicted.

Neutrino Masses in Supersymmetry: R-Parity and Leptogenesis

In the supersymmetric standard model of particle interactions, R-parity nonconservation is often invoked to obtain nonzero neutrino masses. We point out here that such interactions of the supersymmetric particles would erase any pre-existing lepton or baryon asymmetry of the universe before the electroweak phase transition through the $B + L$ violating sphaleron processes. We then show how neutrino masses may be obtained in supersymmetry (assuming R-parity conservation) together with successful leptogenesis and predict the possible existence of new observable particles.

Baryogenesis with Scalar Bilinears

We show that if a baryon asymmetry of the universe is generated through the out-of-equilibrium decays of heavy scalar bilinears coupling to two fermions of the minimal standard model, it is necessarily an asymmetry conserving $(B-L)$ which cannot survive past the electroweak phase transition because of sphalerons. We then show that a surviving $(B-L)$ asymmetry may be generated if the heavy scalars decay into two fermions, \underline {and into two light scalars} (which may be detectable at hadron colliders). We list all possible such trilinear scalar interactions, and discuss how our new baryogenesis scenario may occur naturally in supersymmetric grand unified theories.

Probing the Exotic Particle Content Beyond the Standard Model

We explore the possible exotic particle content beyond the standard model by examining all its scalar bilinear combinations. We categorize these exotic scalar fields and show that without the suppression of (A) their Yukawa couplings with the known quarks and leptons, and (B) the trilinear couplings among themselves, most are already constrained to be very heavy from the nonobservation of proton decay and neutron-antineutron oscillations, the smallness of $K^0 - \bar {K^0}$, $D^0 - \bar {D^0}$ and $B_d^0 - \bar {B_d^0}$ mixing, as well as the requirement of a nonzero baryon asymmetry of the universe. On the other hand, assumption (B) may be naturally violated in many models, especially in supersymmetry, hence certain exotic scalars are allowed to be below a few TeV in mass and would be easily detectable at planned future hadron colliders. In particular, large cross sections for the distinctive processes like $\bar p p \to tt,\bar t c$ and $p p \to t t, b b$ would be expected at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC, respectively.

Lepton Number and Lepton Flavour Violation in Left-Right Symmetric Models

The sources of lepton flavour and lepton number violation in the left-right symmetric models are reviewed and the most sensitive processes to these violations are discussed. Both the non-SUSY and SUSY versions of the theories are considered. Present and future experimental constraints at low as well as at high energies are discussed. Some emphasis has been put on the doubly charged particle production at future colliders.

μ-e Conversion Versus μ-->e γ

We compare two most relevant loop induced muon number violating processes, μ--> e γand μ-e conversion in nuclei, in constraining new physics. Because of much richer structure of the latter process it may be enhanced with respect to μ--> e γby a large $\ln(m^2_μ/Λ^2),$ where $Λ$ is the scale of the new physics. After model-independent considerations we present two examples constraining the R-parity violating couplings of MSSM and the off-diagonal couplings of the doubly charged Higgs bosons from the non-observation of μ-e conversion.

Bileptons - Present Constraints and Future Prospects at Colliders

Bosons which couple to two leptons and carry lepton number L=2, generically called bileptons, appear in many extensions of the standard model. We review the present constraints on bilepton parameters coming from low and high energy data. In particular, we point out that the amplitude of $μ-e$ conversion in nuclei is enhanced by large logarithms if compared with the $μ\to eγ$ one. Bilepton couplings will be tested most stringently at future colliders. For wide range of neutrino masses the cross section of one of the processes $e^-e^- (μ^-μ^-)\to \ell_i^-\ell_i^-,$ $i=e,μ, τ,$ mediated by scalar triplet bilepton, has such a lower bound that it should be observed at future facilities.

Discovering and Studying Bileptons with e-e- Collisions

We analyze the prospects for discovering and unraveling the nature of doubly-charged bileptons at a linear collider of the next generation running in its electron-electron colliding mode. We stress the importance of initial state radiation, beam spread and polarization, and compute the discovery bounds. The gauge nature of vector bileptons can be determined by studying hard photon emission.

Extended Electroweak Models and Their Tests in Future Colliders

Some possible tests of physics beyond the Standard Model in the next generation collider experiments are considered. The main emphasis is put on the processes which may be studied in the non-conventional $e^-e^-$, $e^-γ$ and $γγ$ operation modes of the next linear collider (NLC). In particular, sensitivity of the NLC for testing the gauge boson self-interactions through the reaction $e^-γ\to W^-ν$ is investigated. High energy tests of the susy and non-susy left-right symmetric models are analysed.
