Strong Convergence of Multiplicative Brownian Motions on the General Linear Group

We consider the family of multiplicative Brownian motions $G_{λ,τ}$ on the general linear group introduced by Driver-Hall-Kemp. They are parametrized by the real variance $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ and the complex covariance $τ\in \mathbb{C}$ of the underlying elliptic Brownian motion. We show the almost sure strong convergence of the finite-dimensional marginals of $G_{λ,τ}$ to the corresponding free multiplicative Brownian motion introduced by Hall-Ho: as the dimension tends to infinity, not only does the noncommutative distribution converge almost surely, but the operator norm does as well. This result generalizes the work of Collins-Dahlqvist-Kemp for the special case $(λ,τ)=(1,0)$ which corresponds to the Brownian motion on the unitary group. Actually, this strong convergence remains valid when the family of multiplicative Brownian motions $G_{λ,τ}$ is considered alongside a family of strongly converging deterministic matrices.

Rates of convergence in the Free Multiplicative Central Limit Theorem

We provide the first quantitative estimates for the rate of convergence in the free multiplicative central limit theorem (CLT), in terms of the Kolmogorov and $r$-Wasserstein distances for $r \geq 1$. While the free additive CLT has been thoroughly studied, including convergence rates, the multiplicative setting remained open in this regard. We consider products of the form $$ π_n^{g,n^{-1/2}x} := g\left(\frac{x_1}{\sqrt{n}}\right) \cdots g\left(\frac{x_n}{\sqrt{n}}\right),$$ where $x_1, \dots, x_n$ are freely independent self-adjoint operators with common variance $σ^2$ and $g \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ satisfies certain regularity and integrability conditions. We quantify the deviation of the singular value distribution of $π_n^{g,x}$ from the free positive semicircular law, with bounds depending only on the moments of the underlying variables. Additionally, we present a combinatorial proof of the free multiplicative CLT that extends to the unbounded setting.

The Distribution of Polynomials in Monotone Independent Elements

Building on the work of Arizmendi and Celestino (2021), we derive the $*$-distributions of polynomials in monotone independent and infinitesimally monotone independent elements. For non-zero complex numbers $α$ and $β$, we derive explicitly the $*$-distribution of $p_{α,β}=αab + βba$ whenever $a$ and $b$ are monotone or infinitesimally monotone independent elements. This encompasses both cases of the commutator and anti-commutator. This approach can be pushed to study more general polynomials. As applications, we derive the limiting distribution with respect to the partial trace of polynomials in a certain class of random matrices.

Quantitative Estimates for Operator-Valued and Infinitesimal Boolean and Monotone Limit Theorems

We provide Berry-Esseen bounds for sums of operator-valued Boolean and monotone independent variables, in terms of the first moments of the summands. Our bounds are on the level of Cauchy transforms as well as the Lévy distance. As applications, we obtain quantitative bounds for the corresponding CLTs, provide a quantitative "fourth moment theorem" for monotone independent random variables including the operator-valued case, and generalize the results by Hao and Popa on matrices with Boolean entries. Our approach relies on a Lindeberg method that we develop for sums of Boolean/monotone independent random variables. Furthermore, we push this approach to the infinitesimal setting to obtain the first quantitative estimates for the operator-valued infinitesimal free, Boolean and monotone CLT.

Berry-Esseen bounds for the multivariate $\mathcal{B}$-free CLT and operator-valued matrices

We provide bounds of Berry-Esseen type for fundamental limit theorems in operator-valued free probability theory such as the operator-valued free Central Limit Theorem and the asymptotic behaviour of distributions of operator-valued matrices. Our estimates are on the level of operator-valued Cauchy transforms and the Lévy distance. We address the single-variable as well as the multivariate setting for which we consider linear matrix pencils and noncommutative polynomials as test functions. The estimates are in terms of operator-valued moments and yield the first quantitative bounds on the Lévy distance for the operator-valued free Central Limit Theorem. Our results also yield quantitative estimates on joint noncommutative distributions of operator-valued matrices having a general covariance profile. In the scalar-valued multivariate case, these estimates could be passed to explicit bounds on the order of convergence under the Kolmogorov distance.

Operator-Valued Matrices with Free or Exchangeable Entries

We study matrices whose entries are free or exchangeable noncommutative elements in some tracial $W^*$-probability space. More precisely, we consider operator-valued Wigner and Wishart matrices and prove quantitative convergence to operator-valued semicircular elements over some subalgebra in terms of Cauchy transforms. As direct applications, we obtain explicit rates of convergence for a large class of random block matrices with independent or correlated blocks. Our approach relies on a noncommutative extension of the Lindeberg method and operator-valued Gaussian interpolation techniques.

Matrix Poincaré inequalities and concentration

We show that any probability measure satisfying a Matrix Poincaré inequality with respect to some reversible Markov generator satisfies an exponential matrix concentration inequality depending on the associated matrix carré du champ operator. This extends to the matrix setting a classical phenomenon in the scalar case. Moreover, the proof gives rise to new matrix trace inequalities which could be of independent interest. We then apply this general fact by establishing matrix Poincaré inequalities to derive matrix concentration inequalities for Gaussian measures, product measures and for Strong Rayleigh measures. The latter represents the first instance of matrix concentration for general matrix functions of negatively dependent random variables.

Hölder Continuity of Cumulative Distribution Functions for Noncommutative Polynomials under Finite Free Fisher Information

This paper contributes to the current studies on regularity properties of noncommutative distributions in free probability theory. More precisely, we consider evaluations of selfadjoint noncommutative polynomials in noncommutative random variables that have finite non-microstates free Fisher information, highlighting the special case of Lipschitz conjugate variables. For the first time in this generality, it is shown that the analytic distributions of those evaluations have Hölder continuous cumulative distribution functions with an explicit Hölder exponent that depends only on the degree of the considered polynomial. For linear polynomials, we reach in the case of finite non-microstates free Fisher information the optimal Hölder exponent $\frac{2}{3}$, and get Lipschitz continuity in the case of Lipschitz conjugate variables. In particular, our results guarantee that such polynomial evaluations have finite logarithmic energy and thus finite (non-microstates) free entropy, which partially settles a conjecture of Charlesworth and Shlyakhtenko [CS16]. We further provide a very general criterion that gives for weak approximations of measures having Hölder continuous cumulative distribution functions explicit rates of convergence in terms of the Kolmogorov distance. Finally, we combine these results to study the asymptotic eigenvalue distributions of polynomials in GUEs or matrices with more general Gibbs laws. For Gibbs laws, this extends the corresponding result obtained in [GS09] from convergence in distribution to convergence in Kolmogorov distance; in the GUE case, we even provide explicit rates, which quantify results of [HT05,HST06] in terms of the Kolmogorov distance.

Limiting spectral distribution of Gram matrices associated with functionals of $β$-mixing processes

We give asymptotic spectral results for Gram matrices of the form $ n^{-1}\mathcal{X}_n \mathcal{X}_n^T$ where the entries of $\mathcal{X}_n$ are dependent across both rows and columns. More precisely, they consist of short or long range dependent random variables having moments of second order and that are functionals of an absolutely regular sequence. We also give a concentration inequality of the Stieltjes transform and we prove that, under an arithmetical decay condition on the $β$-mixing coefficients, it is almost surely concentrated around its expectation. Applications to examples of positive recurrent Markov chains and dynamical systems are also given.

Bernstein type inequality for a class of dependent random matrices

In this paper we obtain a Bernstein type inequality for the sum of self-adjoint centered and geometrically absolutely regular random matrices with bounded largest eigenvalue. This inequality can be viewed as an extension to the matrix setting of the Bernstein-type inequality obtained by Merlevède et al. (2009) in the context of real-valued bounded random variables that are geometrically absolutely regular. The proofs rely on decoupling the Laplace transform of a sum on a Cantor-like set of random matrices.

On the limiting spectral distribution for a large class of random matrices with correlated entries

For symmetric random matrices with correlated entries, which are functions of independent random variables, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the empirical eigenvalue distribution can be obtained by analyzing a Gaussian matrix with the same covariance structure. This class contains both cases of short and long range dependent random fields. The technique is based on a blend of blocking procedure and Lindeberg's method. This method leads to a variety of interesting asymptotic results for matrices with dependent entries, including applications to linear processes as well as nonlinear Volterra-type processes entries.
