Little Supersymmetry and the Supersymmetric Little Hierarchy Problem

The current experimental lower bound on the Higgs mass significantly restricts the allowed parameter space in most realistic supersymmetric models, with the consequence that these models exhibit significant fine-tuning. We propose a solution to this `supersymmetric little hierarchy problem'. We consider scenarios where the stop masses are relatively heavy - in the 500 GeV to a TeV range. Radiative stability of the Higgs soft mass against quantum corrections from the top quark Yukawa coupling is achieved by imposing a global SU(3) symmetry on this interaction. This global symmetry is only approximate - it is not respected by the gauge interactions. A subgroup of the global symmetry is gauged by the familiar SU(2) of the Standard Model. The physical Higgs is significantly lighter than the other scalars because it is the pseudo-Goldstone boson associated with the breaking of this symmetry. Radiative corrections to the Higgs potential naturally lead to the right pattern of gauge and global symmetry breaking. We show that both the gauge and global symmetries can be embedded into a single SU(6) grand unifying group, thereby maintaining the prediction of gauge coupling unification. Among the firm predictions of this class of models are new states with the quantum numbers of 10 and $\bar{10}$ under SU(5) close to the TeV scale. The Higgs mass is expected to be below 130 GeV, just as in the MSSM.

More Modular Invariant Anomalous U(1) Breaking

We consider the case of several scalar fields, charged under a number of U(1) factors, acquiring vacuum expectation values due to an anomalous U(1). We demonstrate how to make redefinitions at the superfield level in order to account for tree-level exchange of vector supermultiplets in the effective supergravity theory of the light fields in the supersymmetric vacuum phase. Our approach builds upon previous results that we obtained in a more elementary case. We find that the modular weights of light fields are typically shifted from their original values, allowing an interpretation in terms of the preservation of modular invariance in the effective theory. We address various subtleties in defining unitary gauge that are associated with the noncanonical Kahler potential of modular invariant supergravity, the vacuum degeneracy, and the role of the dilaton field. We discuss the effective superpotential for the light fields and note how proton decay operators may be obtained when the heavy fields are integrated out of the theory at the tree-level. We also address how our formalism may be extended to describe the generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism for multiple anomalous U(1)'s that occur in four-dimensional Type I and Type IIB string constructions.

Modular Invariant Anomalous U(1) Breaking

We describe the effective supergravity theory present below the scale of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking due to an anomalous U(1), obtained by integrating out tree-level interactions of massive modes. A simple case is examined in some detail. We find that the effective theory can be expressed in the linear multiplet formulation, with some interesting consequences. Among them, the modified linearity conditions lead to new interactions not present in the theory without an anomalous U(1). These additional interactions are compactly expressed through a superfield functional.

One Loop Soft Supersymmetry Breaking Terms in Superstring Effective Theories

We perform a systematic analysis of soft supersymmetry breaking terms at the one loop level in a large class of string effective field theories. This includes the so-called anomaly mediated contributions. We illustrate our results for several classes of orbifold models. In particular, we discuss a class of models where soft supersymmetry breaking terms are determined by quasi model independent anomaly mediated contributions, with possibly non-vanishing scalar masses at the one loop level. We show that the latter contribution depends on the detailed prescription of the regularization process which is assumed to represent the Planck scale physics of the underlying fundamental theory. The usual anomaly mediation case with vanishing scalar masses at one loop is not found to be generic. However gaugino masses and A-terms always vanish at tree level if supersymmetry breaking is moduli dominated with the moduli stabilized at self-dual points, whereas the vanishing of the B-term depends on the origin of the mu-term in the underlying theory. We also discuss the supersymmetric spectrum of O-I and O-II models, as well as a model of gaugino condensation. For reference, explicit spectra corresponding to a Higgs mass of 114 GeV are given. Finally, we address general strategies for distinguishing among these models.

Quantum-Induced Soft Supersymmetry Breaking In Supergravity

We calculate the one-loop quantum contributions to soft supersymmetry breaking terms in the scalar potential in supergravity theories regulated à la Pauli-Villars. We find ``universal'' contributions, independent of the regulator masses and tree level soft supersymmetry breaking, that contribute gaugino masses and A-terms equal to the ``anomaly mediated'' contributions found in analyses using spurion techniques, as well as a scalar mass term not identified in those analyses. The universal terms are in general modified -- and in some cases canceled -- by model-dependent terms. Under certain restrictions on the couplings we recover the one-loop results of previous ``anomaly mediated'' supersymmetry breaking scenarios. We emphasize the model dependence of loop-induced soft terms in the potential, which are much more sensitive to the details of Planck scale physics then are the one-loop contributions to gaugino masses. We discuss the relation of our results to previous analyses.

A D-moduli problem?

We point out a generic problem in string-inspired supergravity models with an anomalous $U(1)_X$. A large number of matter multiplets charged under $U(1)_X$ remain massless above the supersymmetry-breaking scale because of degeneracy of vacua solving the D-flatness conditions. A toy model is analyzed as an illustration of the mechanism; we find the surprising result that many scalars remain massless after supersymmetry-breaking in a hidden sector.

One-loop Regularization of Supergravity II: The Dilaton and the Superfield Formulation

The on-shell regularization of the one-loop divergences of supergravity theories is generalized to include a dilaton of the type occurring in effective field theories derived from superstring theory, and the superfield structure of the one-loop corrections is given. Field theory anomalies and quantum contributions to soft supersymmetry breaking are discussed. The latter are sensitive to the precise choice of couplings that generate Pauli-Villars masses, which in turn reflect the details of the underlying theory above the scale of the effective cut-off. With a view to the implementation the Green-Schwarz and other mechanisms for canceling field theory anomalies under a U(1) gauge transformation and under the T-duality group of modular transformations, we show that the Kähler potential renormalization for the untwisted sector of orbifold compactification can be made invariant under these groups.

Constraints on Hidden Sector Gaugino Condensation

We study the phenomenology of a class of models describing modular invariant gaugino condensation in the hidden sector of a low-energy effective theory derived from the heterotic string. Placing simple demands on the resulting observable sector, such as a supersymmetry-breaking scale of approximately 1 TeV, a vacuum with properly broken electroweak symmetry, superpartner masses above current direct search limits, etc., results in significant restrictions on the possible configurations of the hidden sector.

Gaugino Masses in Modular Invariant Supergravity

We calculate gaugino masses in string-derived models with hidden-sector gaugino condensation. The linear multiplet formulation for the dilaton superfield is used to implement perturbative modular invariance. The contribution arising from quantum effects in the observable sector includes the term recently found in generic supergravity models. A much larger contribution is present if matter fields with Standard Model gauge couplings also couple to the Green-Schwarz counter term. We comment on the relation of our Kähler U(1) superspace formalism to other calculations.

The Standard Model of Particle Physics

Particle physics has evolved a coherent model that characterizes forces and particles at the most elementary level. This Standard Model, built from many theoretical and experimental studies, is in excellent accord with almost all current data. However, there are many hints that it is but an approximation to a yet more fundamental theory. We trace the development of the Standard Model and indicate the reasons for believing that it is incomplete.

Inflation and flat directions in modular invariant superstring effective theories

The potential during inflation must be very flat in, at least, the direction of the inflaton. In renormalizable global supersymmetry, flat directions are ubiquitous, but they are not preserved in a generic supergravity theory. It is known that at least some of them are preserved in no-scale supergravity, and simple generalizations of it. We here study a more realistic generalization, based on string-derived supergravity, using the linear supermultiplet formalism for the dilaton. We consider a general class of hybrid inflation models, where a Fayet-Illiopoulos $D$ term drives some fields to large values. The potential is dominated by the $F$ term, but flatness is preserved in some directions. This allows inflation, with the dilaton stabilized in its domain of attraction, and some moduli stabilized at their vacuum values. Another modulus may be the inflaton.

One-Loop Pauli-Villars Regularization of Supergravity I: Canonical Gauge Kinetic Energy

It is shown that the one-loop coefficients of on-shell operators of standard supergravity with canonical gauge kinetic energy can be regulated by the introduction of Pauli-Villars chiral and abelian gauge multiplets, subject to a condition on the matter representations of the gauge group. Aspects of the anomaly structure of these theories under global nonlinear symmetries and an anomalous gauge symmetry are discussed.

Regulating the Baryon Asymmetry in No-Scale Affleck-Dine Baryogenesis

In supergravity models (such as standard superstring constructions) that possess a Heisenberg symmetry, supersymmetry breaking by the inflationary vacuum energy does not lift flat directions at tree level. One-loop corrections give small squared masses that are negative (about -g^2 H^2/(4π)^2) for all flat directions that do not involve the stop. After inflation, these flat directions generate a large baryon asymmetry; typically $n_B/s \sim$ O(1). We consider mechanisms for suppressing this asymmetry to the observed level. These include dilution from inflaton or moduli decay, GUT nonflatness of the $vev$ direction, and higher dimensional operators in both GUT models and the MSSM. We find that the observed BAU can easily be generated when one or more of these effects is present.
