Szilard Engines as Quantum Thermodynamical Systems

We analyze an engine whose working fluid consists of a single quantum particle, paralleling Szilard's construction of a classical single-particle engine. Following his resolution of Maxwell's Second Law paradox using the latter, which turned on physically instantiating the demon (control subsystem), the quantum engine's design mirrors the classically-chaotic Szilard Map that operates a thermodynamic cycle of measurement, thermal-energy extraction, and memory reset. Focusing on the thermodynamic costs to observe and control the particle and comparing these in the quantum and classical limits, we detail the thermodynamic tradeoffs behind Landauer's Principle for information-processing-induced thermodynamic dissipation in the quantum and classical regimes. In particular, and as found with the classical engine, we show that the sum of the thermodynamic costs over a cycle obeys a generalized Landauer Principle, exactly balancing energy extraction from the heat bath. Thus, the quantum engine obeys the Second Law. However, the quantum engine does so via substantially different mechanisms: classically measurement and erasure determine the thermodynamics, while in the quantum implementation the cost of partition insertion is key.

Three Dimensional Pure Gravity and Generalized Hecke Operators

In this paper, we study mathematical functions of relevance to pure gravity in AdS3. Modular covariance places stringent constraints on the space of such functions; modular invariance places even stronger constraints on how they may be combined into physically viable candidate partition functions. We explicitly detail the list of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic functions that serve as candidates for chiral and anti-chiral partition functions and note that modular covariance is only consistent with such functions when the left (resp. right) central charge is an integer multiple of 8, $c\in 8\mathbb{N}$. We then find related constraints on the symmetry group of the corresponding topological, Chern-Simons, theory in the bulk of AdS. The symmetry group of the theory can be one of two choices: either $SO(2; 1) \times SO(2; 1)$ or its three-fold diagonal cover. We introduce the generalized Hecke operators which map the modular covariant functions to the modular covariant functions. With these mathematical results, we obtain conjectural partition functions for extremal CFT2s, and the corresponding microcanonical entropies, when the chiral central charges are multiples of eight. Finally, we compute subleading corrections to the Beckenstein-Hawking entropy in the bulk gravitational theory with these conjectural partition functions

Entanglement sudden birth and sudden death in a system of two distant atoms coupled via an optical element

An investigation is reported of the collective effects and the dynamics of atom atom entanglement in a system of two distant two level atoms which are coupled via an optical element. In the system under consideration, the two atoms, which are trapped in the foci of a lens, are coupled to a common environment being in the vacuum state and they emit photons spontaneously. A fraction of the emitted photons from each atom is thus focused on the position of the other atom. The presence of optical element between two distant atoms leads to the occurrence of delayed collective effects, such as delayed dipole dipole interaction and delayed collective spontaneous emission, which play the crucial role in the dynamical behavior of the entanglement. We discuss the phenomena of entanglement sudden birth, entanglement sudden death, and revival of entanglement for both cases of initial one photon and initial two photon unentangled atomic states. We show that the evolution of the entanglement is sensitive not only to the interatomic distance but also to the initial state of the system as well as to the properties of the optical element.

Chiral Modular Bootstrap

Using modular bootstrap we show the lightest primary fields of a unitary compact two dimensional conformal field theory(with $c, \bar{c}>1$) has a conformal weight $h_1\le \frac{c}{12}+\mathcal{O}(1)$.This implies that the upper bound on the dimension of the lightest primary fields depends on their spin. In particular if the set of lightest primary fields includes extremal or near extremal states whose spin to dimension ratio $\frac{j}Δ\approx 1$, the corresponding dimension is $Δ\le \frac{c}{12}+\mathcal{O}(1)$. From AdS/CFT correspondence, we obtain an upper bound on the spectrum of black hole in three dimensional gravity. Our results show that if the first primary fields have large spin, the corresponding three dimensional gravity has extremal or near extremal BTZ black hole.
