Implications of cosmic strings with time-varying tension on CMB and large scale structure

We investigate cosmological evolution and implications of cosmic strings with time-dependent tension. We derive basic equations of time development of the correlation length and the velocity of such strings, based on the one scale model. Then, we find that, in the case where the tension depends on some power of the cosmic time, cosmic strings with time-dependent tension goes into the scaling solution if the power is lower than a critical value. We also discuss cosmic microwave background anisotropy and matter power spectra produced by these strings. The constraints on their tensions from the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP) three year data and Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) data are also given.

Cosmological evolution of cosmic strings with time-dependent tension

We discuss the cosmological evolution of cosmic strings with time-dependent tension. We show that, in the case that the tension changes as a power of time, the cosmic string network obeys the scaling solution: the characteristic scale of the string network grows with the time. But due to the time dependence of the tension, the ratio of the energy density of infinite strings to that of the background universe is {\it not} necessarily constant.

Black Strings in Our World

The brane world scenario is a new approach to resolve the problem on how to compactify the higher dimensional spacetime to our 4-dimensional world. One of the remarkable features of this scenario is the higher dimensional effects in classical gravitational interactions at short distances. Due to this feature, there are black string solutions in our 4-dimensional world. In this paper, assuming the simplest model of complex minimally coupled scalar field with the local U(1) symmetry, we show a possibility of black-string formation by merging processes of type I long cosmic strings in our 4-dimensional world. No fine tuning for the parameters in the model might be necessary.

Smooth hybrid inflation in supergravity with a running spectral index and early star formation

It is shown that in a smooth hybrid inflation model in supergravity adiabatic fluctuations with a running spectral index with $\ns >1$ on a large scale and $\ns <1$ on a smaller scale can be naturally generated, as favored by the first-year data of WMAP. It is due to the balance between the nonrenormalizable term in the superpotential and the supergravity effect. However, since smooth hybrid inflation does not last long enough to reproduce the central value of observation, we invoke new inflation after the first inflation. Its initial condition is set dynamically during smooth hybrid inflation and the spectrum of fluctuations generated in this regime can have an appropriate shape to realize early star formation as found by WMAP. Hence two new features of WMAP observations are theoretically explained in a unified manner.

Spontaneous baryogenesis in flat directions

We discuss a spontaneous baryogenesis mechanism in flat directions. After identifying the Nambu-Goldstone mode which derivatively couples to the associated $U$(1) current and rotates due to the A-term, we show that spontaneous baryogenesis can be naturally realized in the context of the flat direction. As applications, we discuss two scenarios of baryogenesis in detail. One is baryogenesis in a flat direction with a vanishing $B-L$ charge, especially, with neither baryon nor lepton charge, which was recently proposed by Chiba and the present authors. The other is a baryogenesis scenario compatible with a large lepton asymmetry.

Note on the Robustness of the Neutrino Mass Bounds from Cosmology

The recent high precision maps of cosmic microwave anisotropies combined with measurements of the galaxy power spectrum from new large-scale redshift surveys have allowed stringent bounds on the sum of the neutrino masses to be placed. The past analyses, however, have implicitly assumed that the spectrum of primordial density fluctuations is adiabatic and coherent, as predicted in the simplest models of inflation. In this paper, we show that the limits hold even if the assumption on the primordial power spectrum is relaxed to allow for a contribution of nonadiabatic, incoherent fluctuations such as would be predicted by topological defects.

Baryogenesis in a flat direction with neither baryon nor lepton charge

We present a new mechanism of spontaneous baryogenesis. Usually such mechanisms require a derivative coupling between a scalar field and baryon current. In our model, the scalar field instead derivatively couples to a current associated with some global symmetry $U(1)_Q$. In this case, baryogenesis is still possible provided that an interaction exists, which violates the baryon and $U(1)_Q$ symmetries simultaneously. As a concrete example, we discuss baryogenesis in a flat direction with neither baryon nor lepton charge.

Chaotic hybrid new inflation in supergravity with a running spectral index

We propose an inflation model in supergravity, in which chaotic and hybrid inflation occurs successively, followed by new inflation. During hybrid inflation, adiabatic fluctuations with a running spectral index with $\ns >1$ on a large scale and $\ns <1$ on a smaller scale are generated, as favored by recent results of the first year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. The initial condition of new inflation is also set dynamically during hybrid inflation, and its duration and the amplitude of density fluctuations take appropriate values to help early star formation to realize early reionization.

Generation of cosmological large lepton asymmetry from a rolling scalar field

We propose a new scenario to simultaneously explain a large lepton asymmetry and a small baryon asymmetry. We consider a rolling scalar field and its derivative coupling to the lepton number current. The presence of an effective nonzero time derivative of the scalar field leads to $CPT$ violation so that the lepton asymmetry can be generated even in thermal equilibrium as pointed out by Cohen and Kaplan. In this model, the lepton asymmetry varies with time. In particular, we consider the case where it grows with time. The final lepton asymmetry is determined by the decoupling of the lepton number violating interaction and can be as large as order unity. On the other hand, if the decoupling takes place after the electroweak phase transition, a small baryon asymmetry is obtained from the small lepton asymmetry at that time through sphaleron effects. We construct a model in which a rolling scalar field is identified with a quintessence field.

Inflation with a running spectral index in supergravity

The first year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data favors primordial adiabatic fluctuation with a running spectral index with $\ns >1$ on a large scale and $\ns <1$ on a smaller scale. The model building of inflation that predicts perturbations with such a spectrum is a challenge, because most models predict fluctuations with either $\ns >1$ (hybrid inflation) or $\ns <1$ (new, chaotic, or topological inflation). We give a sensible particle physics model in supergravity that accommodates the desired running of the spectral index using double inflation.

Spontaneous baryogenesis in warm inflation

We discuss spontaneous baryogenesis in the warm inflation scenario. In contrast with standard inflation models, radiation always exists in the warm inflation scenario, and the inflaton must be directly coupled to it. Also, the transition to the post-inflationary radiation dominated phase is smooth and the entropy is not significantly increased at the end of the period of inflation. In addition, after the period of warm inflation ends, the inflaton does not oscillate coherently but slowly rolls. We show that as a consequence of these features of warm inflation, the scenario can well accommodate the spontaneous baryogenesis mechanism, provided that the decoupling temperature $T_{D}$ of the baryon or the $B-L$ violating interactions is higher than the temperature of radiation during the late stages of inflation.

Quantitative evolution of global strings from the Lagrangian viewpoint

We clarify the quantitative nature of the cosmological evolution of a global string network, that is, the energy density, peculiar velocity, velocity squared, Lorentz factor, formation rate of loops, and emission rate of Nambu-Goldstone bosons, based on a new type of numerical simulation of scalar fields in Eulerian meshes. We give a detailed explanation of a method to extract the above-mentioned quantities to characterize string evolution by analyzing scalar fields in Eulerian meshes from a Lagrangian viewpoint. We confirm our previous claim that the number of long strings per horizon volume in a global string network is smaller than in the case of a local string network by a factor of $\sim$10 even under cosmological situations, and its reason is clarified.

Lagrangian evolution of global strings

We establish a method to trace the Lagrangian evolution of extended objects consisting of a multicomponent scalar field in terms of a numerical calculation of field equations in three dimensional Eulerian meshes. We apply our method to the cosmological evolution of global strings and evaluate the energy density, peculiar velocity, Lorentz factor, formation rate of loops, and emission rate of Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons. We confirm the scaling behavior with a number of long strings per horizon volume smaller than the case of local strings by a factor of $\sim$ 10. The strategy and the method established here are applicable to a variety of fields in physics.

Large lepton asymmetry from Q-balls

We propose a scenario which can explain large lepton asymmetry and small baryon asymmetry simultaneously. Large lepton asymmetry is generated through Affleck-Dine (AD) mechanism and almost all the produced lepton numbers are absorbed into Q-balls (L-balls). If the lifetime of the L-balls is longer than the onset of electroweak phase transition but shorter than the epoch of big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), the large lepton asymmetry in the L-balls is protected from sphaleron effects. On the other hand, small (negative) lepton numbers are evaporated from the L-balls due to thermal effects, which are converted into the observed small baryon asymmetry by virtue of sphaleron effects. Large and positive lepton asymmetry of electron type is often requested from BBN. In our scenario, choosing an appropriate flat direction in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we can produce positive lepton asymmetry of electron type but totally negative lepton asymmetry.

Supersymmetric topological inflation model

We propose a topological inflation model in supergravity. In this model, the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a scalar field takes a value much larger than the gravitational scale $M_{G} \simeq 2.4 \times 10^{18}$ GeV, which is large enough to cause topological inflation. On the other hand, expansions of the Kähler potential and the superpotential beyond the gravitational scale are validated by the introduction of a Nambu-Goldstone-like shift symmetry. Thus, topological inflation inevitably takes place in our model.

Scaling property and peculiar velocity of global monopoles

We investigate the scaling property of global monopoles in the expanding universe. By directly solving the equations of motion for scalar fields, we follow the time development of the number density of global monopoles in the radiation dominated (RD) universe and the matter dominated (MD) universe. It is confirmed that the global monopole network relaxes into the scaling regime and the number per hubble volume is a constant irrespective of the cosmic time. The number density $n(t)$ of global monopoles is given by $n(t) \simeq (0.43\pm0.07) / t^{3}$ during the RD era and $n(t) \simeq (0.25\pm0.05) / t^{3}$ during the MD era. We also examine the peculiar velocity $v$ of global monopoles. For this purpose, we establish a method to measure the peculiar velocity by use of only the local quantities of the scalar fields. It is found that $v \sim (1.0 \pm 0.3)$ during the RD era and $v \sim (0.8 \pm 0.3)$ during the MD era. By use of it, a more accurate analytic estimate for the number density of global monopoles is obtained.

Double Inflation in Supergravity and Primordial Black Holes Formation

In this talk we propose a natural double inflation model in supergravity. Chaotic inflation first takes place by virtue of the Nambu-Goldstone-like shift symmetry. During chaotic inflation, an initial value of second inflation (new inflation) is set, which is adequately far from the local maximum of the potential due to the small linear term in the Kähler potential. Then, primordial fluctuations within the present horizon scale may be produced during both inflations. Primordial fluctuations responsible for anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation and the large scale structure are produced during chaotic inflation, while fluctuations on smaller scales are produced during new inflation. Because of the peculiar nature of new inflation, they can become as large as $10^{-1}$-$10^{-2}$, which may lead to the formation of primordial black holes.

Cosmological Evolution of Global Monopoles

We investigate the cosmological evolution of global monopoles in the radiation dominated (RD) and matter dominated (MD) universes by numerically solving field equations of scalar fields. It is shown that the global monopole network relaxes into the scaling regime, unlike the gauge monopole network. The number density of global monopoles is given by $n(t) \simeq (0.43\pm0.07) / t^{3}$ during the RD era and $n(t) \simeq (0.25\pm0.05) / t^{3}$ during the MD era. Thus, we have confirmed that density fluctuations produced by global monopoles become scale invariant and are given by $δρ\sim 7.2(5.0) σ^{2} / t^{2} $ during the RD (MD) era, where $σ$ is the breaking scale of the symmetry.
