Emergent $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ Symmetry in $α$-ZrCl$_3$ and Crystalline Spin-Orbital Liquids

While the enhancement of the spin-space symmetry from the usual $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ is promising for finding nontrivial quantum spin liquids, its realization in magnetic materials remains challenging. Here we propose a new mechanism by which the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ symmetry emerges in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. In $d^1$ transition metal compounds with edge-sharing anion octahedra, the spin-orbit coupling gives rise to strongly bond-dependent and apparently $\mathrm{SU}(4)$-breaking hopping between the $J_\textrm{eff}=3/2$ quartets. However, in the honeycomb structure, a gauge transformation maps the system to an $\mathrm{SU}(4)$-symmetric Hubbard model. In the strong repulsion limit at quarter filling, as realized in $α$-ZrCl$_3,$ the low-energy effective model is the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, which cannot have a trivial gapped ground state and is expected to host a gapless spin-orbital liquid. By generalizing this model to other three-dimensional lattices, we also propose crystalline spin-orbital liquids protected by this emergent $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ symmetry and space group symmetries.

Crystalline Kitaev spin liquids

Frustrated magnetic systems exhibit many fascinating phases. Prime among them are quantum spin liquids, where the magnetic moments do not order even at zero temperature. A subclass of quantum spin liquids called Kitaev spin liquids are particularly interesting, because they are exactly solvable, can be realized in certain materials, and show a large variety of gapless and gapped phases. Here, we show that non-symmorphic symmetries can enrich spin liquid phases, such that the low-energy spinon degrees of freedom form three-dimensional Dirac cones or nodal chains. In addition, we suggest how such Kitaev spin liquids may be realized in metal-organic-frameworks.

Designing Kitaev spin liquids in metal-organic frameworks

Kitaev's honeycomb lattice spin model is a remarkable exactly solvable model, which has a particular type of spin liquid (Kitaev spin liquid) as the ground state. Although its possible realization in iridates and $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been vigorously discussed recently, these materials have substantial non-Kitaev direct exchange interactions and do not have a spin liquid ground state. We propose metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Ru$^{3+}$ (or Os$^{3+}$) forming the honeycomb lattice as promising candidates for a more ideal realization of Kitaev-type spin models where the direct exchange interaction is strongly suppressed. The great flexibility of MOFs allows generalization to other three-dimensional lattices, for potential realization of a variety of spin liquids such as a Weyl spin liquid.

First-Principles Design of a Half-Filled Flat Band of the Kagome Lattice in Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks

We design from first principles a new type of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using phenalenyl-based ligands to exhibit a half-filled flat band of the kagome lattice, which is one of the lattice family that shows Lieb-Mielke-Tasaki's flat-band ferromagnetism. Among various MOFs, we find that $\textit{trans}$-Au-THTAP(trihydroxytriaminophenalenyl) has such an ideal band structure, where the Fermi energy is adjusted right at the flat band due to unpaired electrons of radical phenalenyl. The spin-orbit coupling opens a band gap giving a non-zero Chern number to the nearly flat band, as confirmed by the presence of the edge states in first-principles calculations and by fitting to the tight-binding model. This is a novel and realistic example of a system in which a nearly flat band is both ferromagnetic $\textit{and}$ topologically non-trivial.
