The effect of charge fluctuation on a normal-superconducting-normal single-electron transistor

We theoretically investigate quantum fluctuation of charge between even and odd states of a normal-superconducting-normal single-electron tunneling transistor. It is shown that due to the superconducting gap, the charge fluctuation in the Coulomb blockade regime for even state is larger than that for odd state. We show that large energy correction in the former regime caused by charge fluctuation can be explained by considering the charging energy renormalization.

Cooper Pair Formation in U(1) Gauge Theory of High Temperature Superconductivity

We study the two-dimensional spin-charge separated Ginzburg-Landau theory containing U(1) gauge interactions as a semi-phenomenological model describing fluctuating condensates in high temperature superconductivity. Transforming the original GL action, we abstract the effective action of Cooper pair. Especially, we clarify how Cooper pair correlation evolves in the normal state from the point of view of spin-charge separation. Furthermore, we point out how Cooper pair couples to gauge field in a gauge-invariant way, stressing the insensitivity of Cooper pair to infrared gauge field fluctuation.

CCS Imaging of the Starless Core L1544: An Envelope with Infall and Rotation

We have carried out observations of the starless core L1544 in the CCS (J_N=3_2-2_1) line at 9 millimeters wavelength using the BIMA array. The maps show an elongated condensation, 0.15 x 0.045 pc in size, with stronger emission at the edges. The appearance is consistent with a flattened, ringlike structure viewed at high inclination to the line of sight. The CCS molecule is likely heavily depleted in the inner part of the core. The position velocity diagram along the major axis shows a remarkable pattern, a "tilted ellipse", that can be reproduced by a simple model ring with motions of both infall and rotation. The models suggest comparable velocities for infall and rotation, ~0.1 km/s, in the outermost envelope, at radius 15000 AU.

Spectral Flow and Quantum Theory of Dissipation in the Vortex Core of BCS superconductors

The dissipation process in two dimensional BCS superconductor due to the quasiparticles in the core of moving vortex is studied from a quantum mechanical point of view, especially paying attention to the spectral flow of the bound state energies in the vortex core. In order to clarify the nature of the spectral flow, we performed a numerical study of a finite system and, by extending the analysis to include the effect of impurities, we discuss the quantum mechanical origin of the dissipation in the vortex core.

Spectral Flow and the Dynamics of Dislocations in Charge Density Waves

The spectral flow in the cores of moving dislocations is found to play an important role in the dynamics and transport of charge density wave (CDW) by significantly modifying the hydrodynamic effective action of the condensate. The analogy of spectral flow in CDW with the baryogenesis in the early universe is pointed out.

Topological Dislocations and Mixed State of Charge Density Waves

We discuss the possibility of the ``mixed state'' in incommensurate charge density waves with three-dimensional order. It is shown that the mixed state can be created by applying an electric field perpendicular to the chains. This state consists of topological dislocations induced by the external field and is therefore similar to the mixed states of superfluids (type-II superconductor or liquid Helium II). However, the peculiar coupling of charge density waves with the electric field strongly modifies the nature of the mixed state compared to the conventional superfluids. The field and temperature dependence of the properties of the mixed state are studied, and some experimental aspects are discussed.
