Worpitzky partitions for root systems and characteristic quasi-polynomials

We introduce a partition of (coweight) lattice points inside the dilated fundamental parallelepiped into those of partially closed simplices. This partition can be considered as a generalization and a lattice points interpretation of the classical formula of Worpitzky. This partition, and the generalized Eulerian polynomial, recently introduced by Lam and Postnikov, can be used to describe the characteristic (quasi)polynomials of Shi and Linial arrangements. As an application, we prove that the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the Shi arrangement turns out to be a polynomial. We also present several results on the location of zeros of characteristic polynomials, related to a conjecture of Postnikov and Stanley. In particular, we verify the "functional equation" of the characteristic polynomial of the Linial arrangement for any root system, and give partial affirmative results on "Riemann hypothesis" for the root systems of type $E_6, E_7, E_8$, and $F_4$.

Vanishing results for the Aomoto complex of real hyperplane arrangements via minimality

We prove vanishing results of the cohomology groups of Aomoto complex over arbitrary coefficient ring for real hyperplane arrangements. The proof is using minimality of arrangements and descriptions of Aomoto complex in terms of chambers. Our methods also provide a new proof for the vanishing theorem of local system cohomology groups which was first proved by Cohen, Dimca and Orlik.

Chromatic functors of graphs

Finite graphs that have a common chromatic polynomial have the same number of regular $n$-colorings. A natural question is whether there exists a natural bijection between regular $n$-colorings. We address this question using a functorial formulation. Let $G$ be a simple graph. Then for each set $X$ we can associate a set of $X$-colorings. This defines a functor, "chromatic functor" from the category of sets with injections to itself. The first main result verifies that two finite graphs determine isomorphic chromatic functors if and only if they have the same chromatic polynomial. Chromatic functors can be defined for arbitrary, possibly infinite, graphs. This fact enables us to investigate functorial chromatic theory for infinite graphs. We prove that chromatic functors satisfy the Cantor-Bernstein-Schröder property. We also prove that countable connected trees determine isomorphic chromatic functors. Finally, we present a pair of infinite graphs that determine non-isomorphic chromatic functors.

Logarithmic vector fields for quasihomogeneous curve configurations in P^2

Let A be a union of smooth plane curves C_i, such that each singular point of A is quasihomogeneous. We prove that if C is a smooth curve such that each singular point of A U C is also quasihomogeneous, then there is an elementary modification of rank two bundles, which relates the O_{P^2} module Der(log A) of vector fields on P^2 tangent to A to the module Der(log A U C). This yields an inductive tool for studying the splitting of the bundles Der(log A) and Der(log A U C), depending on the geometry of the divisor A|_C on C.

Degeneration of Orlik-Solomon algebras and Milnor fibers of complex line arrangements

We give a vanishing theorem for the monodromy eigenspaces of the Milnor fibers of complex line arrangements. By applying the modular bound of the local system cohomology groups given by Papadima-Suciu, the result is deduced from the vanishing of the cohomology of certain Aomoto complex over finite fields. In order to prove this, we introduce degeneration homomorphisms of Orlik-Solomon algebras.

Resonant bands, Aomoto complex, and real 4-nets

The resonant band is a useful notion for the computation of the nontrivial monodromy eigenspaces of the Milnor fiber of a real line arrangement. In this article, we develop the resonant band description for the cohomology of the Aomoto complex. As an application, we prove that real 4-nets do not exist.

On the admissibility of certain local system

A rank one local system on the complement of a hyperplane arrangement is said to be admissible if it satisfies certain non-positivity condition at every resonant edges. It is known that the cohomology of admissible local system can be computed combinatorially. In this paper, we study the structure of the set of all non-admissible local systems in the character torus. We prove that the set of non-admissible local systems forms a union of subtori. The relations with characteristic varieties are also discussed.

Freeness of hyperplane arrangements and related topics

This is the expanded notes of the lecture by the author in "Arrangements in Pyrenees", June 2012. We are discussing relations of freeness and splitting problems of vector bundles, several techniques proving freeness of hyperplane arrangements, K. Saito's theory of primitive derivations for Coxeter arrangements, their application to combinatorial problems and related conjectures.

Resonant bands and local system cohomology groups for real line arrangements

We give a new algorithm computing local system cohomology groups for complexified real line arrangements. Using it, we obtain several conditions for the first local system cohomology to vanish and to be at most one-dimensional, which generalize a result by Cohen-Dimca-Orlik. The conditions are described in terms of discrete geometric structures of real figures. The proof is based on a recent study on minimal cell structures. We also compute the characteristic variety of the deleted $B_3$-arrangement.

Milnor fibers of real line arrangements

We study Milnor fibers of complexified real line arrangements. We give a new algorithm computing monodromy eigenspaces of the first cohomology. The algorithm is based on the description of minimal CW-complexes homotopic to the complements, and uses the real figure, that is, the adjacency relations of chambers. It enables us to generalize a vanishing result of Libgober, give new upper-bounds and characterize the $A_3$-arrangement in terms of non-triviality of Milnor monodromy.

Free arrangements and coefficients of characteristic polynomials

Ziegler showed that free arrangements have free restricted multiarrangements (multirestrictions). After Ziegler's work, several results concerning "reverse direction", namely characterizing freeness of an arrangement via that of multirestriction, have appeared. In this paper, we prove that the second Betti number of the arrangement plays a crucial role.

Minimality of hyperplane arrangements and basis of local system cohomology

The purpose of this paper is applying minimality of hyperplane arrangements to local system cohomology groups. It is well known that twisted cohomology groups with coefficients in a generic rank one local system vanish except in the top degree, and bounded chambers form a basis of the remaining cohomology group. We determine precisely when this phenomenon happens for two-dimensional arrangements.

On the connectivity of the realization spaces of line arrangements

We prove that under certain combinatorial conditions, the realization spaces of line arrangements on the complex projective plane are connected. We also give several examples of arrangements with eight, nine and ten lines which have disconnected realization spaces.

Minimal stratifications for line arrangements and positive homogeneous presentations for fundamental groups

The complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement is known to be homotopic to a minimal CW complex. There are several approaches to the minimality. In this paper, we restrict our attention to real two dimensional cases, and introduce the "dual" objects so called minimal stratifications. The strata are explicitly described as semialgebraic sets. The stratification induces a partition of the complement into a disjoint union of contractible spaces, which is minimal in the sense that the number of codimension $k$ pieces equals the $k$-th Betti number. We also discuss presentations for the fundamental group associated to the minimal stratification. In particular, we show that the fundamental groups of complements of a real arrangements have positive homogeneous presentations.

Arrangements, multiderivations, and adjoint quotient map of type ADE

The first part of this paper is a survey on algebro-geometric aspects of sheaves of logarithmic vector fields of hyperplane arrangements. In the second part we prove that the relative de Rham cohomology (of degree two) of ADE-type adjoint quotient map is naturally isomorphic to the module of certain multiderivations. The isomorphism is obtained by the Gauss-Manin derivative of the Kostant-Kirillov form.

Totally free arrangements of hyperplanes

A central arrangement $\A$ of hyperplanes in an $\ell$-dimensional vector space $V$ is said to be {\it totally free} if a multiarrangement $(\A, m)$ is free for any multiplicity $ m : \A\to \Z_{> 0}$. It has been known that $\A$ is totally free whenever $\ell \le 2$. In this article, we will prove that there does not exist any totally free arrangement other than the obvious ones, that is, a product of one-dimensional arrangements and two-dimensional ones.

Periods and elementary real numbers

The periods, introduced by Kontsevich and Zagier, form a class of complex numbers which contains all algebraic numbers and several transcendental quantities. Little has been known about qualitative properties of periods. In this paper, we compare the periods with hierarchy of real numbers induced from computational complexities. In particular we prove that periods can be effectively approximated by elementary rational Cauchy sequences. As an application, we exhibit a computable real number which is not a period.
