Hypergraph Clustering Based on PageRank

A hypergraph is a useful combinatorial object to model ternary or higher-order relations among entities. Clustering hypergraphs is a fundamental task in network analysis. In this study, we develop two clustering algorithms based on personalized PageRank on hypergraphs. The first one is local in the sense that its goal is to find a tightly connected vertex set with a bounded volume including a specified vertex. The second one is global in the sense that its goal is to find a tightly connected vertex set. For both algorithms, we discuss theoretical guarantees on the conductance of the output vertex set. Also, we experimentally demonstrate that our clustering algorithms outperform existing methods in terms of both the solution quality and running time. To the best of our knowledge, ours are the first practical algorithms for hypergraphs with theoretical guarantees on the conductance of the output set.

Equivalence of conditions on initial data below the ground state to NLS with a repulsive inverse power potential

In this paper, we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a repulsive inverse power potential. First, we show that some global well-posedness results and "blow-up or grow-up" results below the ground state without the potential. Then, we prove equivalence of the conditions on the initial data below the ground state without potential. We note that recently, we established existence of a radial ground state and characterized it by the virial functional for NLS with a general potential in two or higher space dimensions in [8]. Then, we also prove a global well-posedness result and a "blow-up or grow-up" result below the radial ground state with a repulsive inverse power potential obtained in [8].

Well-posedness for the fourth-order Schrödinger equation with third order derivative nonlinearities

We study the Cauchy problem to the semilinear fourth-order Schrödinger equations: \begin{equation}\label{0-1}\tag{4NLS} \begin{cases} i\partial_t u+\partial_x^4u=G\left(\left\{\partial_x^{k}u\right\}_{k\le γ},\left\{\partial_x^{k}\bar{u}\right\}_{k\le γ}\right), & t>0,\ x\in \mathbb{R}, \\ \ \ \ u|_{t=0}=u_0\in H^s(\mathbb{R}), \end{cases} \end{equation} where $γ\in \{1,2,3\}$ and the unknown function $u=u(t,x)$ is complex valued. In this paper, we consider the nonlinearity $G$ of the polynomial \[ G(z)=G(z_1,\cdots,z_{2(γ+1)}) :=\sum_{m\le |α|\le l}C_αz^α, \] for $z\in \mathbb{C}^{2(γ+1)}$, where $m,l\in\mathbb{N}$ with $3\le m\le l$ and $C_α\in \mathbb{C}$ with $α\in (\mathbb{N}\cup \{0\})^{2(γ+1)}$ is a constant. The purpose of the present paper is to prove well-posedness of the problem (\ref{0-1}) in the lower order Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ or with more general nonlinearities than previous results. Our proof of the main results is based on the contraction mapping principle on a suitable function space employed by D. Pornnopparath (2018). To obtain the key linear and bilinear estimates, we construct a suitable decomposition of the Duhamel term introduced by I. Bejenaru, A. D. Ionescu, C. E. Kenig, and D. Tataru (2011). Moreover we discuss scattering of global solutions and the optimality for the regularity of our well-posedness results, namely we prove that the flow map is not smooth in several cases.

Critical exponent for the wave equation with a time-dependent scale invariant damping and a cubic convolution

In the present paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with a time-dependent scale invariant damping $\frac{2}{1+t}\partial_t v$ and a cubic convolution $(|x|^{-γ}*v^2)v$ with $γ\in \left(-\frac{1}{2},3\right)$ in three spatial dimension for initial data $\left(v(x,0),\partial_tv(x,0)\right)\in C^2(\mathbb{R}^3)\times C^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with a compact support, where $v=v(x,t)$ is an unknown function to the problem on $\mathbb{R}^3\times[0,T)$. Here $T$ denotes a maximal existence time of $v$. The first aim of the present paper is to prove unique global existence of the solution to the problem and asymptotic behavior of the solution in the supercritical case $γ\in (0,3)$, and show a lower estimate of the lifespan in the critical or subcritical case $γ\in \left(-\frac{1}{2},0\right]$. The essential part for their proofs is to derive a weaker estimate under the weaker condition than the case without damping and to recover the weakness by the effect of the dissipative term. The second aim of the present paper is to prove a small data blow-up and the almost sharp upper estimate of the lifespan for positive data with a compact support in the subcritical case $γ\in \left(-\frac{1}{2},0\right)$. The essential part for the proof is to refine the argument for the proof of Theorem 6.1 in \cite{H20} to obtain the upper estimate of the lifespan. Our two results determine that a critical exponent $γ_c$ which divides global existence and blow-up for small solutions is $0$, namely $γ_c=0$. As the result, we can see that the critical exponent shift from $2$ to $0$ due to the effect of the scale invariant damping term.

The Cauchy problem of the semilinear second order evolution equation with fractional Laplacian and damping

In the present paper, we prove time decay estimates of solutions in weighted Sobolev spaces to the second order evolution equation with fractional Laplacian and damping for data in Besov spaces. Our estimates generalize the estimates obtained in the previous studies. The second aim of this article is to apply these estimates to prove small data global well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the equation with power nonlinearities. Especially, the estimates obtained in this paper enable us to treat more general conditions on the nonlinearities and the spatial dimension than the results in the previous studies.

Analysis via Orthonormal Systems in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert $C^*$-Modules and Applications

Kernel methods have been among the most popular techniques in machine learning, where learning tasks are solved using the property of reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). In this paper, we propose a novel data analysis framework with reproducing kernel Hilbert $C^*$-module (RKHM), which is another generalization of RKHS than vector-valued RKHS (vv-RKHS). Analysis with RKHMs enables us to deal with structures among variables more explicitly than vv-RKHS. We show the theoretical validity for the construction of orthonormal systems in Hilbert $C^*$-modules, and derive concrete procedures for orthonormalization in RKHMs with those theoretical properties in numerical computations. Moreover, we apply those to generalize with RKHM kernel principal component analysis and the analysis of dynamical systems with Perron-Frobenius operators. The empirical performance of our methods is also investigated by using synthetic and real-world data.

Small data blow-up for the wave equation with a time-dependent scale invariant damping and a cubic convolution for slowly decaying initial data

In the present paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with a time-dependent scale invariant damping, i.e.$\frac{2}{1+t}\partial_t v$ and a cubic convolution $(|x|^{-γ}*v^2)v$ with $γ\in (0,n)$, where $v=v(x,t)$ is an unknown function on $\mathbb{R}^n\times[0,T)$. Our aim of the present paper is to prove a small data blow-up result and show an upper estimate of lifespan of the problem for slowly decaying positive initial data $(v(x,0),\partial_t v(x,0))$ such as $\partial_t v(x,0)=O(|x|^{-(1+ν)})$ as $|x|\rightarrow\infty$. Here $ν$ belongs to the scaling supercritical case $ν<\frac{n-γ}{2}$. Our main new contribution is to estimate the convolution term in high spatial dimensions, i.e. $n\ge 4$. This paper is the first blow-up result to treat wave equations with the cubic convolution in high spatial dimensions ($n\ge 4$).

Metric on random dynamical systems with vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

Development of metrics for structural data-generating mechanisms is fundamental in machine learning and the related fields. In this paper, we give a general framework to construct metrics on random nonlinear dynamical systems, defined with the Perron-Frobenius operators in vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (vvRKHSs). We employ vvRKHSs to design mathematically manageable metrics and also to introduce operator-valued kernels, which enables us to handle randomness in systems. Our metric provides an extension of the existing metrics for deterministic systems, and gives a specification of the kernel maximal mean discrepancy of random processes. Moreover, by considering the time-wise independence of random processes, we clarify a connection between our metric and the independence criteria with kernels such as Hilbert-Schmidt independence criteria. We empirically illustrate our metric with synthetic data, and evaluate it in the context of the independence test for random processes. We also evaluate the performance with real time seris datas via clusering tasks.

Global well-posedness, dissipation and blow up for semilinear heat equations in energy spaces associated with self-adjoint operators

The purpose in this paper is to determine the global behavior of solutions to the initial-boundary value problems for energy-subcritical and critical semilinear heat equations by initial data with lower energy than the mountain pass level in energy spaces associated with self-adjoint operators satisfying Gaussian upper bounds. Our self-adjoint operators include the Dirichlet Laplacian on an open set, Robin Laplacian on an exterior domain, and Schrödinger operators, etc.

Finding Cheeger Cuts in Hypergraphs via Heat Equation

Cheeger's inequality states that a tightly connected subset can be extracted from a graph $G$ using an eigenvector of the normalized Laplacian associated with $G$. More specifically, we can compute a subset with conductance $O(\sqrt{ϕ_G})$, where $ϕ_G$ is the minimum conductance of a set in $G$. It has recently been shown that Cheeger's inequality can be extended to hypergraphs. However, as the normalized Laplacian of a hypergraph is no longer a matrix, we can only approximate to its eigenvectors; this causes a loss in the conductance of the obtained subset. To address this problem, we here consider the heat equation on hypergraphs, which is a differential equation exploiting the normalized Laplacian. We show that the heat equation has a unique solution and that we can extract a subset with conductance $\sqrt{ϕ_G}$ from the solution. An analogous result also holds for directed graphs.

Sharp lifespan estimates of blowup solutions to semilinear wave equations with time-dependent effective damping

We consider the initial value problem for the semilinear wave equation with time-dependent effective damping. The interest is the behavior of lifespan of solutions in view of the asymptotic profile of the damping as $t\to \infty$. The result of this paper is the sharp lifespan estimates of blowup solutions for general time-dependent damping including threshold cases between effective and overdamping.

Global dynamics below the ground state for the focusing Schrödinger equation with a potential

In this paper, we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a real valued potential V=V(x). We study global behavior of solutions to the equation with a data below the ground state under some conditions for the potential V and prove a scattering result and a blowing-up result in mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical. Our proof of the blowing-up or growing-up result without radially symmetric assumption is based on the argument by Du-Wu-Zhang in [6]. We can exclude the possibility of the growing-up result by the argument in [23], [15], and [10] if "the data and the potential are radially symmetric" or "the data has finite variance".

Scattering for the one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with exponential nonlinearity

We consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NLKG) with exponential nonlinearity in the one spatial dimension with data in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb{R}) \times L^2(\mathbb{R})$. We prove that any energy solution has a global bound of the $L^6_{t,x}$ space-time norm, and hence scatters in $H^1(\mathbb{R}) \times L^2(\mathbb{R})$ as $t\rightarrow\pm \infty$. The proof is based on the argument by Killip-Stovall-Visan (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364 (2012), no. 3, 1571--1631). However, since well-posedness in $H^{1/2}(\mathbb{R}) \times H^{-1/2}(\mathbb{R})$ for NLKG with the exponential nonlinearity holds only for small initial data, we use the $L_t^6 W^{s-1/2,6}_x$-norm for some $s>\frac{1}{2}$ instead of the $L_{t,x}^6$-norm, where $W_x^{s,p}$ denotes the $s$-th order $L^p$-based Sobolev space.

The global optimum of shallow neural network is attained by ridgelet transform

We prove that the global minimum of the backpropagation (BP) training problem of neural networks with an arbitrary nonlinear activation is given by the ridgelet transform. A series of computational experiments show that there exists an interesting similarity between the scatter plot of hidden parameters in a shallow neural network after the BP training and the spectrum of the ridgelet transform. By introducing a continuous model of neural networks, we reduce the training problem to a convex optimization in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space, and obtain the explicit expression of the global optimizer via the ridgelet transform.

Metric on Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Perron-Frobenius Operators

The development of a metric for structural data is a long-term problem in pattern recognition and machine learning. In this paper, we develop a general metric for comparing nonlinear dynamical systems that is defined with Perron-Frobenius operators in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Our metric includes the existing fundamental metrics for dynamical systems, which are basically defined with principal angles between some appropriately-chosen subspaces, as its special cases. We also describe the estimation of our metric from finite data. We empirically illustrate our metric with an example of rotation dynamics in a unit disk in a complex plane, and evaluate the performance with real-world time-series data.

Test function method for blow-up phenomena of semilinear wave equations and their weakly coupled systems

In this paper we consider the wave equations with power type nonlinearities including time-derivatives of unknown functions and their weakly coupled systems. We propose a framework of test function method and give a simple proof of the derivation of sharp upper bound of lifespan of solutions to nonlinear wave equations and their systems. We point out that for respective critical case, we use a family of self-similar solution to the standard wave equation including Gauss's hypergeometric functions which are originally introduced by Zhou (1992). However, our framework is much simpler than that. As a consequence, we found new $(p,q)$-curve for the system $\partial_t^2u-Δu=|v|^q$, $\partial_t^2v-Δv=|\partial_tu|^p$ and lifespan estimate for small solutions for new region.

Revisit on the blow-up rate of solutions for a weakly coupled system of semilinear heat equations in the subcritical case

We introduce a straightforward method to analyze the blow-up of systems of ordinary differential inequalities, and apply it to study the blow- up of solutions to a weakly coupled system of semilinear heat equations. We prove that the solution blows up in a finite time under the subcritical condition. Moreover, we give estimates of lifespan of the solution and lower estimates of the blow-up rate for a localized average of each component.

$L^p$-$L^q$ estimates for the damped wave equation and the critical exponent for the nonlinear problem with slowly decaying data

We study the Cauchy problem of the damped wave equation \begin{align*} \partial_{t}^2 u - Δu + \partial_t u = 0 \end{align*} and give sharp $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates of the solution for $1\le q \le p < \infty\ (p\neq 1)$ with derivative loss. This is an improvement of the so-called Matsumura estimates. Moreover, as its application, we consider the nonlinear problem with initial data in $(H^s\cap H_r^β) \times (H^{s-1} \cap L^r)$ with $r \in (1,2]$, $s\ge 0$, and $β= (n-1)|\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{r}|$, and prove the local and global existence of solutions. In particular, we prove the existence of the global solution with small initial data for the critical nonlinearity with the power $1+\frac{2r}{n}$, while it is known that the critical power $1+\frac{2}{n}$ belongs to the blow-up region when $r=1$. We also discuss the asymptotic behavior of the global solution in supercritical cases. Moreover, we present blow-up results in subcritical cases. We give estimates of lifespan and blow-up rates by an ODE argument.
