Undulator Radiation from a Single Electron: A Temporal Double-Slit Experiment

Double-slit diffraction studies with photons or massive particles rank among the most beautiful experiments in physics. In particular, measurements at very low intensities demonstrate the particle-wave duality and the coherent superposition of states very clearly. In this paper, low-intensity double-slit experiments in the time domain are presented measuring the spectral distribution of synchrotron light from a single relativistic electron in a storage ring. In two consecutive radiation sources (so-called undulators) with a magnetic detour between them, electrons emit two temporally separated light pulses leading to a spectrum with interference fringes, very much like the angular distribution of light behind two spatially separated slits. Independent experiments at two synchrotron light sources (DELTA in Germany and UVSOR-III in Japan) directly demonstrate that the spectral distribution of accumulated synchrotron light from a single electron is essentially the same as the spectrum from a beam of many electrons. While the latter is usually explained as interference between electromagnetic waves from the two undulators, the single-electron experiments demonstrate that coherent photon emission is delocalized over several meters and the accumulated spectral distribution exhibits a deterministic interference pattern at small wavelengths. The experiments presented here were conducted with near-ultraviolet light to avoid an elaborate in-vacuum setup, but the very wide spectral range of synchrotron radiation, from infrared light to X-rays, enables access to regimes not available in laser-based quantum optics experiments.

Scattering analysis of nano-scale chiral structures in optical vortex using Method of Moments

This paper presents a full 3D Method of Moments (MoM) simulation for analysis of scattering from nano-scale chiral ribbon structures under optical vortex illumination to aim to investigate electromagnetic mechanism of circular dichroism (CD) and optical vortex dichroism (VD). Both twist and helical nano-ribbons are modeled as dispersive materials scatterer. CD and VD are evaluated quantitatively by differences in scattering power. Numerical results demonstrate that angular momentum of optical light induces dichroic response effectively.

Spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction of synchrotron radiation

Ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet electric-fields produced by relativistic electrons in an undulator of a synchrotron light source are characterized by using spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER). A tandem undulator with a phase shifter produces a pair of wavelength shifted wave packets with some delay. The interferogram between the pair of the wave packets is analyzed with a SPIDER algorithm, which is widely used for ultrashort pulse characterization. As a result, a 10-cycle square shaped electric-field is reconstructed. The waveform corresponds to the radiation from an electron accelerated with the undulator which consists of 10 periods of permanent magnets.

Gamma ray vortices from nonlinear inverse Compton scattering of circularly polarized light

Inverse Compton scattering (ICS) is an elemental radiation process that produces high-energy photons both in nature and in the laboratory. Non-linear ICS is a process in which multiple photons are converted to a single high-energy photon. Here, we theoretically show that the photon produced by non-linear ICS of circularly polarized photons is a vortex, which means that it possesses a helical wave front and carries orbital angular momentum. Our work explains a recent experimental result regarding non-linear Compton scattering that clearly shows an annular intensity distribution as a remarkable feature of a vortex beam. Our work implies that gamma ray vortices should be produced in various situations in astrophysics in which high-energy electrons and intense circularly polarized light fields coexist. They should play a critical role in stellar nucleosynthesis. Non-linear ICS is the most promising radiation process for realizing a gamma ray vortex source based on currently available laser and accelerator technologies, which would be an indispensable tool for exploring gamma ray vortex science.

Present status of source development station at UVSOR-III

Construction and development of a source development station are in progress at UVSOR-III, a 750 MeV electron storage ring. It is equipped with an optical klystron type undulator system, a mode lock Ti:Sa Laser system, a dedicated beam-line for visible-VUV radiation and a parasitic beam-line for THz radiation. New light port to extract edge radiation was constructed recently. An optical cavity for a resonator free electron laser is currently being reconstructed. Some experiments such as coherent THz radiation, coherent harmonic radiation, laser Compton Scattering gamma-rays and optical vortices are in progress.
