Semi-integral Brauer-Manin obstruction and quadric orbifold pairs

We study local-global principles for two notions of semi-integral points, termed Campana points and Darmon points. In particular, we develop a semi-integral version of the Brauer-Manin obstruction interpolating between Manin's classical version for rational points and the integral version developed by Colliot-Thélène and Xu. We determine the status of local-global principles, and obstructions to them, in two families of orbifolds naturally associated to quadric hypersurfaces. Further, we establish a quantitative result measuring the failure of the semi-integral Brauer-Manin obstruction to account for its integral counterpart for affine quadrics.

Weak approximation and the Hilbert property for Campana points

We study weak approximation and the Hilbert property for Campana points, both of importance in recent work on a Manin-type conjecture by Pieropan, Smeets, Tanimoto and Varilly-Alvarado. We show that weak weak approximation implies the Hilbert property for Campana points, and we exploit this to exhibit Campana orbifolds whose sets of Campana points are not thin.

The elliptic sieve and Brauer groups

A theorem of Serre states that almost all plane conics over $\mathbb{Q}$ have no rational point. We prove an analogue of this for families of conics parametrised by elliptic curves using elliptic divisibility sequences and a version of the Selberg sieve for elliptic curves. We also give more general results for specialisations of Brauer groups, which yields applications to norm form equations.

Weak approximation on Châtelet surfaces

We study weak approximation for Châtelet surfaces over number fields when all singular fibers are defined over rational points. We consider Châtelet surfaces which satisfy weak approximation over every finite extension of the ground field. We prove many of these results by showing that the Brauer-Manin obstruction vanishes, then apply results of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, and Swinnerton-Dyer.

Bijective Cremona transformations of the plane

We study the birational self-maps of the projective plane over finite fields that induce permutations on the set of rational points. As a main result, we prove that no odd permutation arises over a non-prime finite field of characteristic two, which completes the investigation initiated by Cantat about which permutations can be realized this way. Main ingredients in our proof include the invariance of parity under groupoid conjugations by birational maps, and a list of generators for the group of such maps.

Quantitative arithmetic of diagonal degree $2$ K3 surfaces

In this paper we study the existence of rational points for the family of K3 surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ given by $$w^2 = A_1x_1^6 + A_2x_2^6 + A_3x_3^6.$$ When the coefficients are ordered by height, we show that the Brauer group is almost always trivial, and find the exact order of magnitude of surfaces for which there is a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. Our results show definitively that K3 surfaces can have a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle that is only explained by odd order torsion.

Uniform potential density for rational points on algebraic groups and elliptic K3 surfaces

A collection of varieties satisfies uniform potential density if each of them contains a dense subset of rational points after extending its ground field by a bounded degree. In this paper, we prove that uniform potential density holds for connected algebraic groups of a fixed dimension over fields of characteristic zero as well as elliptic K3 surfaces over number fields.

Brauer-Manin obstructions on degree 2 K3 surfaces

We analyze the Brauer-Manin obstruction to rational points on the K3 surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ given by double covers of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified over a diagonal sextic. After finding an explicit set of generators for the geometric Picard group of such a surface, we find two types of infinite families of counterexamples to the Hasse principle explained by the algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction. The first type of obstruction comes from a quaternion algebra, and the second type comes from a 3-torsion element of the Brauer group, which gives an affirmative answer to a question asked by Ieronymou and Skorobogatov.

Rational points on conic bundles over elliptic curves

We study rational points on conic bundles over elliptic curves with positive rank over a number field. We show that the etale Brauer-Manin obstruction is insufficient to explain failures of the Hasse principle for such varieties. We then further consider properties of the distribution of the set of rational points with respect to its image in the rational points of the elliptic curve. In the process, we prove results on a local-to-global principle for torsion points on elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Index of fibrations and Brauer classes that never obstruct the Hasse principle

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety with a fibration into varieties that either satisfy a condition on representability of zero-cycles or that are torsors under an abelian variety. We study the classes in the Brauer group that never obstruct the Hasse principle for $X$. We prove that if the generic fiber has a zero-cycle of degree $d$ over the generic point, then the Brauer classes whose orders are prime to $d$ do not play a role in the Brauer--Manin obstruction. As a result we show that the odd torsion Brauer classes never obstruct the Hasse principle for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2, certain K3 surfaces, and Kummer varieties.
