Selective observation of surface and bulk bands in polar WTe2 by laser-based spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic state of WTe2, a candidate of type-II Weyl semimetal, is investigated by using laser-based spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES). We prepare the pair of WTe2 samples, one with (001) surface and the other with (00-1) surface, by "sandwich method", and measure the band structures of each surface separately. The Fermi arcs are observed on both surfaces. We identify that the Fermi arcs on the two surfaces are both originating from surface states. We further find a surface resonance band, which connects with the Fermi-arc band, forming a Dirac-cone-like band dispersion. Our results indicate that the bulk electron and hole bands are much closer in momentum space than band calculations.

Time-periodic flows of electrons and holes in semiconductor devices

The main purpose of this paper is mathematical analysis on time-periodic flows of electrons and holes in semiconductors. The flows appear in a situation that alternating-current voltages are applied to devices. In this paper, we study the drift-diffusion model for semiconductors in a three-dimensional bounded domain and investigate the existence and stability of time-periodic solutions. We first derive the uniform-in-time estimate of time-global solutions, and then prove by the relative entropy method that the difference of any two solutions decays exponentially fast as time tends to infinity. These facts enable us to show the unique existence and global stability of time-periodic solution.

Reduced magnetocrystalline anisotropy of CoFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films studied by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Spinel-type CoFe$_2$O$_4$ is a ferrimagnetic insulator with the Néel temperature exceeding 790 K, and shows a strong cubic magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in bulk materials. However, when a CoFe$_2$O$_4$ film is grown on other materials, its magnetic properties are degraded so that so-called magnetically dead layers are expected to be formed in the interfacial region. We investigate how the magnetic anisotropy of CoFe$_2$O$_4$ is modified at the interface of CoFe$_2$O$_4$/Al$_2$O$_3$ bilayers grown on Si(111) using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We find that the thinner CoFe$_2$O$_4$ films have significantly smaller MCA values than bulk materials. The reduction of MCA is explained by the reduced number of Co$^{2+}$ ions at the $O_h$ site reported by a previous study [Y. K. Wakabayashi $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. B $\textbf{96}$, 104410 (2017)].

Large Orbital Magnetic Moment and Strong Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in Heavily Intercalated Fe$_{x}$TiS$_2$

Titanium disulfide TiS$_2$, which is a member of the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides with the 1T-CdI$_2$-type crystal structure, is known to exhibit a wide variety of magnetism through intercalating various kinds of transition-metal atoms of different concentrations. Among them, Fe-intercalated titanium disulfide Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ is known to be ferromagnetic with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and large coercive fields ($H_\text{c}$). In order to study the microscopic origin of the magnetism of this compound, we have performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on single crystals of heavily intercalated Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ ($x\sim0.5$). The grown single crystals showed a strong PMA with a large $H_\text{c}$ of $μ_0H_\text{c} \simeq 1.0\ \text{T}$. XAS and XMCD spectra showed that Fe is fully in the valence states of 2+ and that Ti is in an itinerant electronic state, indicating electron transfer from the intercalated Fe atoms to the host TiS$_2$ bands. The Fe$^{2+}$ ions were shown to have a large orbital magnetic moment of $\simeq 0.59\ μ_\text{B}\text{/Fe}$, to which, combined with the spin-orbit interaction and the trigonal crystal field, we attribute the strong magnetic anisotropy of Fe$_x$TiS$_2$.

Inter-valence charge transfer and charge transport in the spinel ferrite ferromagnetic semiconductor Ru-doped CoFe$_2$O$_4$

Inter-valence charge transfer (IVCT) is electron transfer between two metal $M$ sites differing in oxidation states through a bridging ligand: $M^{n+1} + M'^{m} \rightarrow M^{n} + M'^{m+1}$. It is considered that IVCT is related to the hopping probability of electron (or the electron mobility) in solids. Since controlling the conductivity of ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) is a key subject for the development of spintronic device applications, the manipulation of the conductivity through IVCT may become a new approach of band engineering in FMSs. In Ru-doped cobalt ferrite CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (CFO) that shows ferrimagnetism and semiconducting transport properties, the reduction of the electric resistivity is attributed to both the carrier doping caused by the Ru substitution for Co and the increase of the carrier mobility due to hybridization between the wide Ru $4d$ and the Fe $3d$ orbitals. The latter is the so-called IVCT mechanism that is charge transfer between the mixed valence Fe$^{2+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ states facilitated by bridging Ru $4d$ orbital: Fe$^{2+}$ + Ru$^{4+}$ $\leftrightarrow$ Fe$^{3+}$ + Ru$^{3+}$. To elucidate the emergence of the IVCT state, we have conducted x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) measurements on non-doped CFO and Co$_{0.5}$Ru$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ (CRFO) thin films. The observations of the XAS and RPES spectra indicate that the presence of the mixed valence Fe$^{2+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ state and the hybridization between the Fe $3d$ and Ru $4d$ states in the valence band. These results provide experimental evidence for the IVCT state in CRFO, demonstrating a novel mechanism that controls the electron mobility through hybridization between the $3d$ transition-metal cations with intervening $4d$ states.

Development of the new multi-beam receiver and telescope control system for NASCO

We report the current status of the NASCO (NAnten2 Super CO survey as legacy) project which aims to provide all-sky CO data cube of southern hemisphere using the NANTEN2 4-m submillimeter telescope installed at the Atacama Desert through developing a new multi-beam receiver and a new telescope control system. The receiver consists of 5 beams. The four beams, located at the four corners of a square with the beam separation of 720$''$, are installed with a 100 GHz band SIS receiver having 2-polarization sideband-separation filter. The other beam, located at the optical axis, is installed with a 200 GHz band SIS receiver having 2-polarization sideband-separation filter. The cooled component is modularized for each beam, and cooled mirrors are used. The IF bandwidths are 8 and 4 GHz for 100 and 200 GHz bands, respectively. Using XFFTS spectrometers with a bandwidth of 2 GHz, the lines of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O of $J$=1$-$0 or $J$=2$-$1 can be observed simultaneously for each beam. The control system is reconstructed on the ROS architecture, which is an open source framework for robot control, to enable a flexible observation mode and to handle a large amount of data. The framework is commonly used and maintained in a robotic field, and thereby reliability, flexibility, expandability, and efficiency in development are improved as compared with the system previously used. The receiver and control system are installed on the NANTEN2 telescope in December 2019, and its commissioning and science verification are on-going. We are planning to start science operation in early 2021.

Alternation of Magnetic Anisotropy Accompanied by Metal-Insulator Transition in Strained Ultrathin Manganite Heterostructures

Fundamental understanding of interfacial magnetic properties in ferromagnetic heterostructures is essential to utilize ferromagnetic materials for spintronic device applications. In this paper, we investigate the interfacial magnetic and electronic structures of epitaxial single-crystalline LaAlO$_3$ (LAO)/La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO)/Nb:SrTiO$_3$ (Nb:STO) heterostructures with varying LSMO-layer thickness, in which the magnetic anisotropy strongly changes depending on the LSMO thickness due to the delicate balance between the strains originating from both the Nb:STO and LAO layers, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES). We successfully detect the clear change of the magnetic behavior of the Mn ions concomitant with the thickness-dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT). Our results suggest that double-exchange interaction induces the ferromagnetism in the metallic LSMO film under tensile strain caused by the SrTiO$_3$ substrate, while superexchange interaction determines the magnetic behavior in the insulating LSMO film under compressive strain originating from the top LAO layer. Based on those findings, the formation of a magnetic dead layer near the LAO/LSMO interface is attributed to competition between the superexchange interaction via Mn 3$d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals under compressive strain and the double-exchange interaction via the 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals.

Anisotropic spin distribution and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the layered ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the new ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is studied by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The large magnetic anisotropy with the anisotropy field of 0.85 T is deduced by fitting the Stoner-Wohlfarth model to the magnetic-field-angle dependence of the projected magnetic moment. Transverse XMCD spectra highlights the anisotropic distribution of Mn 3$d$ electrons, where the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals are less populated than the $d_{xy}$ state because of the $D_{2d}$ splitting arising from the elongated MnAs$_{4}$ tetrahedra. It is suggested that the magnetic anisotropy originates from the degeneracy lifting of $p$-$d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$ hybridized states at the Fermi level and resulting energy gain due to spin-orbit coupling when spins are aligned along the $z$ direction.

Boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a three-dimensional half-space

We consider the nonlinear boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a three-dimensional half-space by perturbing around a Maxwellian, under the assumption that the Mach number of the Maxwellian satisfies ${\cal M}_{\infty} < -1$. In preceding works, nonlinear boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a half-line are considered, with stationary solutions obtained and nonlinear stability confirmed. In this paper, we establish the unique existence of stationary solutions for the three-dimensional half-space model, and show that the stationary solution is asymptotic stable.

Steady States of Gas Ionization with Secondary Emission

We consider the steady states of a gas between two parallel plates that is ionized by a strong electric field so as to create a plasma. There can be a cascade of electrons due both to the electrons colliding with the gas molecules and to the ions colliding with the cathode (secondary emission). We use global bifurcation theory to prove that there is a one-parameter family $\mathscr{K}$ of such steady states with the following property. The curve $\mathscr{K}$ begins at the sparking voltage and either the particle density becomes unbounded or $\mathscr{K}$ ends at an anti-sparking voltage. These critical voltages are characterized explicitly.

Neuro-SERKET: Development of Integrative Cognitive System through the Composition of Deep Probabilistic Generative Models

This paper describes a framework for the development of an integrative cognitive system based on probabilistic generative models (PGMs) called Neuro-SERKET. Neuro-SERKET is an extension of SERKET, which can compose elemental PGMs developed in a distributed manner and provide a scheme that allows the composed PGMs to learn throughout the system in an unsupervised way. In addition to the head-to-tail connection supported by SERKET, Neuro-SERKET supports tail-to-tail and head-to-head connections, as well as neural network-based modules, i.e., deep generative models. As an example of a Neuro-SERKET application, an integrative model was developed by composing a variational autoencoder (VAE), a Gaussian mixture model (GMM), latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), and automatic speech recognition (ASR). The model is called VAE+GMM+LDA+ASR. The performance of VAE+GMM+LDA+ASR and the validity of Neuro-SERKET were demonstrated through a multimodal categorization task using image data and a speech signal of numerical digits.

Stationary flows for compressible viscous fluid in a perturbed half-space

We consider the compressible Navier--Stokes equation in a perturbed half-space with an outflow boundary condition as well as the supersonic condition. For a half-space, it has been known that a certain planar stationary solution exist and it is time-asymptotically stable. The planar stationary solution is independent of the tangential directions and its velocities of the tangential directions are zero. In this paper, we show the unique existence of stationary solutions for the perturbed half-space. The feature of our work is that our stationary solution depends on all directions and has multidirectional flow. Furthermore, we also prove the asymptotic stability of this stationary solution.

Hybridization between the ligand $p$ band and Fe-3$d$ orbitals in the p-type ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Fe)Sb

(Ga,Fe)Sb is a promising ferromagnetic semiconductor for practical spintronic device applications because its Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$) is above room temperature. However, the origin of ferromagnetism with high $T_{\rm C}$ remains to be elucidated. Here, we use soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) to investigate the valence-band (VB) structure of (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)Sb including the Fe-3$d$ impurity band (IB), to unveil the mechanism of ferromagnetism in (Ga,Fe)Sb. We find that the VB dispersion in (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)Sb observed by SX-ARPES is similar to that of GaSb, indicating that the doped Fe atoms hardly affect the band dispersion. The Fe-3$d$ resonant ARPES spectra demonstrate that the Fe-3$d$ IB crosses the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$) and hybridizes with the VB of GaSb. These observations indicate that the VB structure of (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)Sb is consistent with that of the IB model which is based on double-exchange interaction between the localized 3$d$ electrons of the magnetic impurities. The results indicate that the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Fe)Sb is formed by the hybridization of the Fe-3$d$ IB with the ligand $p$ band of GaSb.

Stability and existence of stationary solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations in a domain with a curved boundary

The purpose of this paper is to mathematically investigate the formation of a plasma sheath near the surface of walls immersed in a plasma, and to analyze qualitative information of such a sheath layer. In the case of planar wall, Bohm proposed a criterion on the velocity of the positive ion for the formation of sheath, and several works gave its mathematical validation. It is of more interest to analyze the criterion for the nonplanar wall. In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic stability of stationary solutions for the Euler-Poisson equations in a domain of which boundary is drawn by a graph. The existence and stability theorems are shown by assuming that the velocity of the positive ion satisfies the Bohm criterion at infinite distance. What most interests us in these theorems is that the criterion together with a suitable necessary condition guarantees the formation of sheaths as long as the shape of walls is drawn by a graph.

Magnetization process of the insulating ferromagnetic semiconductor (Al,Fe)Sb

We have studied the magnetization process of the new insulating ferromagnetic semiconductor (Al,Fe)Sb by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. For an optimally doped sample with 10% Fe, a magnetization was found to rapidly increase at low magnetic fields and to saturate at high magnetic fields at room temperature, well above the Curie temperature of 40 K. We attribute this behavior to the existence of nanoscale Fe-rich ferromagnetic domains acting as superparamagnets. By fitting the magnetization curves using the Langevin function representing superparamagnetism plus the paramagnetic linear function, we estimated the average magnetic moment of the nanoscale ferromagnetic domain to be 300-400 $μ_{B}$, and the fraction of Fe atoms participating in the nano-scale ferromagnetism to be $\sim$50%. Such behavior was also reported for (In,Fe)As:Be and Ge:Fe, and seems to be a universal characteristic of the Fe-doped ferromagnetic semiconductors. Further Fe doping up to 14% led to the weakening of the ferromagnetism probably because antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between nearest-neighbor Fe-Fe pairs becomes dominant.

Improving Bi-directional Generation between Different Modalities with Variational Autoencoders

We investigate deep generative models that can exchange multiple modalities bi-directionally, e.g., generating images from corresponding texts and vice versa. A major approach to achieve this objective is to train a model that integrates all the information of different modalities into a joint representation and then to generate one modality from the corresponding other modality via this joint representation. We simply applied this approach to variational autoencoders (VAEs), which we call a joint multimodal variational autoencoder (JMVAE). However, we found that when this model attempts to generate a large dimensional modality missing at the input, the joint representation collapses and this modality cannot be generated successfully. Furthermore, we confirmed that this difficulty cannot be resolved even using a known solution. Therefore, in this study, we propose two models to prevent this difficulty: JMVAE-kl and JMVAE-h. Results of our experiments demonstrate that these methods can prevent the difficulty above and that they generate modalities bi-directionally with equal or higher likelihood than conventional VAE methods, which generate in only one direction. Moreover, we confirm that these methods can obtain the joint representation appropriately, so that they can generate various variations of modality by moving over the joint representation or changing the value of another modality.

Neural Machine Translation with Latent Semantic of Image and Text

Although attention-based Neural Machine Translation have achieved great success, attention-mechanism cannot capture the entire meaning of the source sentence because the attention mechanism generates a target word depending heavily on the relevant parts of the source sentence. The report of earlier studies has introduced a latent variable to capture the entire meaning of sentence and achieved improvement on attention-based Neural Machine Translation. We follow this approach and we believe that the capturing meaning of sentence benefits from image information because human beings understand the meaning of language not only from textual information but also from perceptual information such as that gained from vision. As described herein, we propose a neural machine translation model that introduces a continuous latent variable containing an underlying semantic extracted from texts and images. Our model, which can be trained end-to-end, requires image information only when training. Experiments conducted with an English--German translation task show that our model outperforms over the baseline.

Generative Adversarial Nets from a Density Ratio Estimation Perspective

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are successful deep generative models. GANs are based on a two-player minimax game. However, the objective function derived in the original motivation is changed to obtain stronger gradients when learning the generator. We propose a novel algorithm that repeats the density ratio estimation and f-divergence minimization. Our algorithm offers a new perspective toward the understanding of GANs and is able to make use of multiple viewpoints obtained in the research of density ratio estimation, e.g. what divergence is stable and relative density ratio is useful.
