High-rate qutrit entanglement swapping with photon-number-basis

Entanglement generation between distant nodes is a fundamental process in distributed quantum information processing. Qudits, high-dimensional quantum states, are promising candidates for enhancing entanglement distribution capabilities. However, the success probability of qudit entanglement distribution using Bell measurements is typically lower than that of conventional qubit-based protocols. In this paper, we propose a novel entanglement swapping protocol specifically designed for qutrits (three-dimensional quantum states). Our protocol employs photon-number encoding combined with an additional mode basis, such as polarization, effectively increasing the success probability. We show that the proposed qutrit protocol can achieve higher entanglement generation rates compared to conventional two-photon detection-based qubit protocols, especially under conditions of limited photon generation probability. Furthermore, we evaluate our protocol under realistic experimental imperfections, including photon loss and threshold detection, and show that it achieves high fidelity with probabilistic photon sources.

Experimental investigation of single qubit quantum classifier with small number of samples

We experimentally investigated a single-qubit quantum classifier implemented on a silicon photonic integrated circuit, focusing on its performance under photon-limited conditions. Using the Data Reuploading method with layer-wise optimization via Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO), input data were encoded into the photonic circuit, and classification was performed based on output detection probabilities. Heralded single photons, generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide, served as the input states. Even when the average number of photon samples per input was reduced to approximately two, the classifier achieved nearly 90\% accuracy, provided that the training dataset was sufficiently large. The experimental results were consistent with numerical simulations, which also indicated that performance at low sample sizes can be improved by increasing the size of the training dataset. These findings demonstrate that photonic quantum classifiers can operate effectively with very few photons, supporting their practical feasibility for resource-efficient quantum machine learning on integrated photonic platforms.

Long-Distance Device-Independent Conference Key Agreement

Device-independent quantum key distribution (DI-QKD) enables two remote parties to share an information-theoretically secure key without any assumptions on the inner workings of the devices used. Device-independent conference key agreement (DI-CKA) is multipartite DI-QKD where more than two parties share a common secure key. The performance of DI-CKA, however, is strictly limited because of its susceptibility to losses due e.g. to imperfect detection efficiency and channel transmission. Here, we propose a DI-CKA protocol which reduces this limitation by using a heralding scheme to distribute multipartite entanglement. We analyze key rates of our protocol for two different measurement scenarios and we show that our protocol outperforms a previous DI-CKA protocol even with an experimentally feasible measurement.

Quantum state estimation of multi-partite single photon path entanglement via local measurements

Multipartite entanglement plays a critical role in various applications of quantum internet. In these applications, the entanglement is usually shared by the distant parties. Experimentally, the distributed entanglement should be estimated by only local measurements. Furthermore, for network experiments, it is desirable to employ measurement techniques that are straightforward to implement. In this paper, we propose a method to measure arbitrary multipartite single photon path entangled states by only local measurements. By considering practically reasonable assumptions, our method is relatively easy to implement. We experimentally demonstrate the utility of this method by reconstructing the density matrix of a 3-qubit W-state.

Programmable Quantum Linear Interference with Pulse Shaping of Quantum Light

In this paper, we propose a novel method for interfering frequency-multiplexed photonic quantum states without the use of optical nonlinear effects, and experimentally demonstrate this technique via frequency-domain Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. By cascading the generation of quantum states onto arbitrary orthogonal modes, we can induce interference across any desired frequency mode. Following the generation of quantum states onto the frequency modes, performing measurements in independent frequency bands enables the realisation of a frequency-domain linear optical circuit analogous to linear interference in the spatial domain. We successfully demonstrated programmable quantum interference by controlling the spectral mode functions and measurement bases. Our method offers a new approach to harness the full potential of light's temporal-frequency degrees of freedom, providing a path towards scalable and programmable photonic quantum computing architectures without the need for optical nonlinearities or spatial-mode beam splitters.

Rate-fidelity trade-off in cavity-based remote entanglement generation

The qubit scalability imposes a paramount challenge in the field of quantum computing. Photonic interconnects between distinct quantum computing modules provide a solution to deal with this issue. The fundamental part of this approach is entanglement distribution via travelling photons emitted by matter qubits. However, randomness of the spontaneous emission in the matter qubits limits both the entanglement fidelity and the generation rate. In this paper, by numerical and analytical methods, we investigate the relationship between the entanglement affected by the spontaneous emission and the waveform of the pump pulse used in the photon generation. We confirm and analyze a rate-fidelity trade-off in the entanglement swapping with Gaussian pump pulses and show that a simple extension to non-Gaussian pump pulses improves the trade-off in a certain parameter region. Furthermore we extend our analysis to entanglement distribution in the general multipartite setting and show that the analysis of the bipartite entanglement can be straightforwardly applied in this case as well.

Simple loss-tolerant protocol for GHZ-state distribution in a quantum network

Distributed quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in realizing networks that connect quantum devices. However, sharing entanglement between distant nodes by means of photons is a challenging process primary due to unavoidable losses in the linking channels. In this paper, we propose a simple loss-tolerant protocol for the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state distribution. We analyze the distribution rate under feasible experimental conditions and demonstrate the advantages of rate-loss scaling with respect to direct transmission. Our protocol does not use quantum repeaters and is achievable with current quantum optics technology. The result has direct application to tasks such as conference key agreement or distributed sensing. Moreover, it reduces the requirements for implementing distributed quantum error correction codes such as the surface code.

Compressed sensing enhanced by quantum approximate optimization algorithm

We present a framework to deal with a range of large scale compressive sensing problems using a quantum subroutine. We apply a quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) to support detection in a sparse signal reconstruction algorithm: matching pursuit. The constrained optimization required in this algorithm is difficult to handle when the size of the problem is large and constraints are given by unstructured patterns. Our framework utilizes specially designed structured constraints that are easy to manipulate and reduce the optimization problem to the solution of an Ising model which can be found using Ising solvers. In this research, we test the performance of QAOA for this purpose on a simulator of quantum computer. We observe that our method can outperform reference classical methods. Our results explore a promising path of applying quantum computers in the compressive sensing field.

Multimode Quantum Correlations in Supercontinuum Pulses

Suprecontinuum (SC) light contains complex spectral noise structure and its accurate characterization is important for fundamental understanding of its physics as well as for its applications. Several experimental and theoretical noise characterizations have been performed so far. However, none of them takes into account the quantum mechanical properties. Here, we demonstrate experimental characterisation of quantum noise and its spectral correlations formed in the SC light generated from a photonic crystal fiber. Moreover, by applying an appropriate basis transformation to these correlations, we demonstrate that the SC noise amplitude can be squeezed below the shot-noise limit in some bases, even in the presence of excessively large nonlinearities.

Spectrally resolved Franson interference

Franson interference can be used to test the nonlocal features of energy-time entanglement and has become a standard in quantum physics. However, most of the previous Franson interference experiments were demonstrated in the time domain, and the spectral properties of Franson interference have not been fully explored. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate spectrally resolved Franson interference using biphotons with different correlations, including positive correlation, negative correlation, and non-correlation. It is found that the joint spectral intensities of the biphotons can be modulated along both the signal and idler directions, which has potential applications in generating high-dimensional frequency entanglement and time-frequency grid states. This work may provide a new perspective for understanding the spectral-temporal properties of the Franson interferometer.

We analyze the generation of entanglement in a multipartite optical network. We generalize the twin-field strategy to the multipartie case and show that our protocol has advantageous rate-loss scalings of distributing W states and Dicke states over the star networks. We give precise theoretical formulas and quantitative performance analyses. Also analysis of the same protocol using Gaussian states as resources, which is a typical setup of many experimental tests, is provided.

Fully Quantum Classifier

In this paper we present a supervised machine learning quantum classifier. It consists of a quantum data re-uploading classifier with binary trainable parameters, the optimal values of which are found by a quantum search algorithm. Sequential minimum optimization algorithm with small sample size estimators

Sequential minimum optimization is a machine-learning global search training algorithm. It is applicable when the functional dependence of the cost function on a tunable parameter given the other parameters can be cheaply determined. This assumption is satisfied by quantum circuits built of known gates. We apply it to photonics circuits where the additional challenge appears: low frequency of coincidence events lowers the speed of the algorithm. We propose to modify the algorithm such that small sample size estimators are enough to successfully run the machine learning task. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the modified algorithm applying it to a quantum optics classifier with data reuploading.

Demonstration of a bosonic quantum classifier with data re-uploading

In a single qubit system, a universal quantum classifier can be realised using the data-reuploading technique. In this study, we propose a new quantum classifier applying this technique to bosonic systems and successfully demonstrated it using silicon optical integrated quantum circuits. We established a theory of quantum machine learning algorithm applicable to bosonic systems and implemented a programmable optical circuit combined with an interferometer. Learning and classification using part of the implemented optical quantum circuit with uncorrelated two-photons resulted in a classification with a reproduction rate of approximately 94\% in the proof of principle experiment. As this method can be applied to arbitrary two-mod N-photon system, further development of optical quantum classifiers, such as extensions to quantum entangled and multi-photon states, is expected in the future.

Long-term secure distributed storage using quantum key distribution network with third-party verification

The quantum key distribution network with Vernam's One Time Pad encryption and secret sharing are powerful security tools to realize an information theoretically secure distributed storage system. In our previous work, a single-password-authenticated secret sharing scheme based on the QKD network and Shamir's secret sharing was experimentally demonstrated; it confirmed ITS data transmission, storage, authentication, and integrity. To achieve data integrity, an ITS message authentication code tag is employed and a data owner of the secret sharing performs both the MAC tag generation and verification. However, for a scenario in which the data owner and end users are different entities, the above approach may not work since the data owner can cheat the end users. In this paper, we resolve this problem by proposing an ITS integrity protection scheme employing a third-party verification with time-stamp.

Ultra-fast Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry via temporal filtering

Heralded single photons (HSPs) generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are useful resource to achieve various photonic quantum information processing. Given a large-scale experiment which needs multiple HSPs, increasing the generation rate with suppressing higher-order pair creation is desirable. One of the promising ways is to use a pump laser with a GHz-order repetition rate. In such a high repetition rate regime, however, single-photon detectors can only partially identify the pulses. Hence, we develop a simple model to consider that effect on the spectral purity, and experimentally demonstrate a high-visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independent HSPs generated by SPDC with 3.2 GHz-repetition-rate mode-locked pump pulses. The observed visibility of 0.88(3) is in good agreement with our theoretical model.

Spectrally resolved NOON state interference

NOON state interference (NOON-SI) is a powerful tool to improve the phase sensing precision, and plays an important role in quantum measurement. In most of the previous NOON-SI experiments, the measurements were performed in time domain where the spectral information of the involved photons was integrated and lost during the measurement. In this work, we experimentally measured the joint spectral intensities (JSIs) at different positions of the interference patterns in both time and frequency domains. It was observed that the JSIs were phase-dependent and show odd (even)-number patterns at $0$ ($π$) phase shift; while no interference appeared in time domain measurement, the interference pattern clearly appeared in frequency domain. To our best knowledge, the latter is the first observation of the spectrally resolved NOON state interference, which provides alternative information that cannot be extracted from the time-domain measurement. To explore its potential applications, we considered the interferometric sensing with our setup. From the Fisher information-based analysis, we show that the spectrally resolved NOON-SI has a better performance at non-zero-delay position than its non-spectrally resolved counterpart. The spectrally resolved NOON-SI scheme may be useful for quantum metrology applications such as quantum phase sensing, quantum spectroscopy, and remote synchronization.

Limit of Gaussian operations and measurements for Gaussian state discrimination, and its application to state comparison

We determine the optimal method of discriminating and comparing quantum states from a certain class of multimode Gaussian states and their mixtures when arbitrary global Gaussian operations and general Gaussian measurements are allowed. We consider the so-called constant-$\hat{p}$ displaced states which include mixtures of multimode coherent states arbitrarily displaced along a common axis. We first show that no global or local Gaussian transformations or generalized Gaussian measurements can lead to a better discrimination method than simple homodyne measurements applied to each mode separately and classical postprocessing of the results. This result is applied to binary state comparison problems. We show that homodyne measurements, separately performed on each mode, are the best Gaussian measurement for binary state comparison. We further compare the performance of the optimal Gaussian strategy for binary coherent states comparison with these of non-Gaussian strategies using photon detections.
