A Phase Prediction Method for Pattern Formation in Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Dynamics for Kinetic Ising Model without a priori Assumptions on Domain Patterns

We propose a phase prediction method for the pattern formation in the uniaxial two-dimensional kinetic Ising model with the dipole-dipole interactions under the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau dynamics. Taking the effects of the material thickness into account by assuming the uniformness along the magnetization axis, the model corresponds to thin magnetic materials with long-range repulsive interactions. We propose a new theoretical basis to understand the effects of the material parameters on the formation of the magnetic domain patterns in terms of the equation of balance governing the balance between the linear- and nonlinear forces in the equilibrium state. Based on this theoretical basis, we propose a new method to predict the phase in the equilibrium state reached after the time-evolution under the dynamics with a given set of parameters, by approximating the third-order term using the restricted phase-space approximation [R. Anzaki, K. Fukushima, Y. Hidaka, and T. Oka, Ann. Phys. 353, 107 (2015)] for the $ϕ^4$-models. Although the proposed method does not have the perfect concordance with the actual numerical results, it has no arbitrary parameters and functions to tune the prediction. In other words, it is a method with no a priori assumptions on domain patterns.

Soft X-ray Vortex Beam detected by In-line Holography

We demonstrate the in-line holography for soft x-ray vortex beam having an orbital angular momentum. A hologram is recorded as an interference between a Bragg diffraction wave from a fork grating and a divergence wave generated by a Fresnel zone plate. The obtained images exhibit fork-shaped interference fringes, which confirms the formation of the vortex beam. By analyzing the interference image, we successfully obtained the spiral phase distribution. The results demonstrate that the in-line holography technique is promising for the characterization of topological magnets, such as magnetic skyrmions.

Spin and orbital magnetic moments in perpendicularly magnetized Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{2+y}$O$_{4-z}$ epitaxial thin films: Effects of site-dependent cation valence states

We carried out x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy and investigated cation valence states and spin and orbital magnetic moments in the inverse-spinel ferrimagnet Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{2+y}$O$_{4-z}$ (NCO) epitaxial films with the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that the oxygen pressure P$_{O2}$ during the film growth by pulsed laser deposition influences not only the cation stoichiometry (site-occupation) but also the cation valence state. Our XAS results show that the Ni in the O$_{h}$-site is in the intermediate valence state between +2 and +3, Ni$^{(2+δ)+}$ (0<$δ$<1), whose nominal valence state (the $δ$ value) varies depending on P$_{O2}$. On the other hand, the Co in the octahedral (O$_{h}$) and tetrahedral (T$_{d}$) sites respectively have the valence state close to +3 and +2. We also find that the XMCD signals originate mainly from the T$_{d}$-site Co$^{2+}$ (Co$_{Td}$) and O$_{h}$-site Ni$^{(2+δ)+}$ (Ni$_{Oh}$), indicating that these cation valence states are the key in determining the magnetic and transport properties of NCO films. Interestingly, the valence state of Ni$^{(2+δ)+}$ that gives rise to the XMCD signal remains unchanged independent of P$_{O2}$. The electronic structure of Ni$^{(2+δ)+}$ that is responsible for the magnetic moment and electrical conduction differs from those of Ni$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{3+}$. In addition, the orbital magnetic moment originating from Co$_{Td}$ is as large as 0.14 $μ_{B}/Co_{Td}$ and parallel to the magnetization while the Ni$_{Oh}$ orbital moment is as small as 0.07 $μ_{B}/Ni_{Oh}$ and is rather isotropic. The Co$_{Td}$ therefore plays the key role in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the films. Our results demonstrate the significance of the site-dependent cations valence states for the magnetic and transport properties of NCO films.

Valence-selective local atomic structures on a YbInCu4 valence transition material by x-ray fluorescence holography

An experimental technique of x-ray fluorescence holography for investigating valence-selective local structures was established by employing the incident x-ray energy at a characteristic one near an x-ray absorption edge, and it was adopted to discriminate environments around Yb2+ and Yb3+ ions in a YbInCu4 valence transition material below and above the transition temperature of 42 K. The reconstructed images of the neighboring atoms around Yb3+ show a fcc structure as observed by diffraction experiments, whereas those around Yb2+ have curious cross (+) features, indicating a positional shift of the centered Yb2+ ions from the fcc lattice point.

Bayesian Hamiltonian Selection in X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Core-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a useful measurement technique for investigating the electronic states of a strongly correlated electron system. Usually, to extract physical information of a target object from a core-level XPS spectrum, we need to set an effective Hamiltonian by physical consideration so as to express complicated electron-to-electron interactions in the transition of core-level XPS, and manually tune the physical parameters of the effective Hamiltonian so as to represent the XPS spectrum. Then, we can extract physical information from the tuned parameters. In this paper, we propose an automated method for analyzing core-level XPS spectra based on the Bayesian model selection framework, which selects the effective Hamiltonian and estimates its parameters automatically. The Bayesian model selection, which often has a large computational cost, was carried out by the exchange Monte Carlo sampling method. By applying our proposed method to the 3$d$ core-level XPS spectra of Ce and La compounds, we confirmed that our proposed method selected an effective Hamiltonian and estimated its parameters appropriately; these results were consistent with conventional knowledge obtained from physical studies. Moreover, using our proposed method, we can also evaluate the uncertainty of its estimation values and clarify why the effective Hamiltonian was selected. Such information is difficult to obtain by the conventional analysis method.

Microscope for X-ray orbital angular momentum imaging

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons is carried upon the wave front of an optical vortex and is important in physics research due to its fundamental degree of freedom. As for the interaction with materials, the optical OAM was shown to be transferred to the valence electron based on modified selection rules where a single ion is carefully aligned to the center of a vortex [Schmiegelow et al.(2016)]. We here demonstrate an elaborate way of extracting the distributed OAMs in the two-dimensional x-ray wave field at the exit-face of the specimen by a vorticity-sensitive microscopy, which detects vorticity in the reciprocal-space wave field downstream of the optical vortices. This method enables us to measure the distributed topological charges and OAMs by a single image with the wide field of view over 300 $μ$m. Among various wavelength, the research of x-ray OAM is especially interesting since it could be closely related to the predicted OAM-induced x-ray dichroism [Veenendaal et al.(2007)].

First-Order Structural Change Accompanied by Yb Valence Transition in YbInCu4

A diffraction experiment using a high energy x-ray was carried out on YbInCu4. Below the Yb valence transition temperature, the splitting of Bragg peaks was detected in higher-order reflections. No superlattice reflections accompanying the valence ordering were found below the transition temperature. These experimental findings indicate that a structural change from a cubic structure to a tetragonal structure without valence ordering occurs at the transition temperature. Such a structural change free from any valence ordering is difficult to understand only in terms of Yb valence degrees of freedom. This means that the structural change may be related to electronic symmetries such as quadrupolar degrees of freedom as well as the change in Yb valence.

Observation of lattice distortion in the low-dimensional quantum spin system TiOBr by synchrotron x-ray diffraction

We report here on physical properties and lattice distortion in the new quasi-one-dimensional spin system TiOBr by x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotoron radiation. Comparing the crystal structure between TiOBr and TiOCl, the difference of b-axis length plays a key role for physical properties in both systems. By using single crystal of TiOBr, superlattice reflections were observed at (0 1.5 0) and (0 2.5 0). The temperature dependence of superlattice reflections imply the first order transition at $T_{c1}$=27K. We analyzed the data using the simple dimerization model.
