X-ray detected ferromagnetic resonance spectrometer with an out-of-vacuum photodetector

X-ray detected ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR) spectroscopy is an experimental technique for element-specific spin dynamics in the GHz regime and has been utilized to study spintronic materials. The XFMR signal is usually obtained by detecting X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) emitted from a sample substrate. Here, we report the development of an XFMR spectrometer that is designed to place a photodetector for XEOL detection outside an ultra-high-vacuum chamber. This configuration allows for the easy replacement of detectors, such as photodiodes, CCD cameras, and spectrometers, depending on the experimental requirements. We demonstrated the measurement of XEOL spectra from MgO using a visible light spectrometer as well as the detection of XFMR signals originating from the spin precession of a permalloy (Ni80Fe20) thin film using a photodiode detector. The XFMR spectrometer with an out-of-vacuum photodetector expands possibilities for advanced measurements such as XFMR microscopy.

Roughness-induced magnetic decoupling at organic-inorganic interface

We have investigated structural, electronic and magnetic properties of H$_2$Pc on Fe$_2$N/Fe using low-energy electron diffraction and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy/x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Element specific magnetization curves reveal that the magnetic coupling with H$_2$Pc enhances the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Fe$_2$N/Fe at the H$_2$Pc coverage of 1 molecular layer. However, adding two and three molecular layers of H$_2$Pc reverts the shape of magnetization curve back to the initial state before H$_2$Pc deposition. We successfully link appearance and disappearance of the magnetic coupling at the H$_2$Pc-Fe$_2$N/Fe interface with the change of hybridization strength at N sites accompanied by the increase in the H$_2$Pc coverage.

Anomaly in anomalous Nernst effect at low temperature for C1b-type NiMnSb half-Heusler alloy thin film

The anomaly in the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) was observed for a C1b-type NiMnSb half-Heusler alloy thin film deposited on a MgO (001) substrate. The Nernst angle (θANE) showed maximum peak with decreasing temperature and reached 0.15 at 80 K, which is considered to be brought by the cross-over from half-metal to normal ferromagnet in NiMnSb at low temperature. This anomaly was also observed for the transport properties, that is, both the resistivity and the anomalous Hall resistivity in the same temperature range.
