General method for calculating the universal conductance of strongly correlated junctions of multiple quantum wires

We develop a method to extract the universal conductance of junctions of multiple quantum wires, a property of systems connected to reservoirs, from static ground-state computations in closed finite systems. The method is based on a key relationship, derived within the framework of boundary conformal field theory, between the conductance tensor and certain ground state correlation functions. Our results provide a systematic way of studying quantum transport in the presence of strong electron-electron interactions using efficient numerical techniques such as the standard time-independent density-matrix renormalization-group method. We give a step-by-step recipe for applying the method and present several tests and benchmarks. As an application of the method, we calculate the conductance of the M fixed point of a Y junction of Luttinger liquids for several values of the Luttinger parameter $g$ and conjecture its functional dependence on $g$.

Electron spin resonance shift in spin ladder compounds

We analyze the effects of different coupling anisotropies in spin-1/2 ladder on the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) shift. Combining a perturbative expression in the anisotropies with temperature dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (T-DMRG) computation of the short range correlations, we provide the full temperature and magnetic field evolution of the ESR paramagnetic shift. We show that for well chosen parameters the ESR shift can be in principle used to extract quantitatively the anisotropies and, as an example, discuss the material $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$ (BPCB).

Thermodynamic properties of quantum sine-Gordon spin chain system KCuGaF6

We investigated the thermodynamic properties of the spin-1/2 one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuGaF6 by measuring the specific heat in magnetic fields. When this compound is subjected to a uniform magnetic field H a transverse staggered magnetic field h is induced in this compound owing to the staggered component of the g tensor and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with an alternating D vector. Consequently, the quantum sine-Gordon (SG) model is an effective model of this compound in a uniform magnetic field. In three different field directions, we observed a magnetic-field-induced gap, which increases with H. We analyzed experimental results using specific heat theory based on quantum SG theory. The thermodynamic property for H // c is very well described in terms of the elementary excitations characteristic of the quantum SG model, while for the other field directions, significant contributions from other excitation modes beyond the framework of the quantum SG model were observed. For H // b, a quantum phase transition between gapless and gapped ground states was observed.

Single-ion anisotropy in Haldane chains and form factor of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model

We consider spin-1 Haldane chains with single-ion anisotropy, which exists in known Haldane chain materials. We develop a perturbation theory in terms of anisotropy, where magnon-magnon interaction is important even in the low temperature limit. The exact two-particle form factor in the O(3) nonlinear sigma model leads to quantitative predictions on several dynamical properties including dynamical structure factor and electron spin resonance frequency shift. These agree very well with numerical results, and with experimental data on the Haldane chain material Ni(C$_5$H$_{14}$N$_2$)$_2$N$_3$(PF$_6$).

Dynamical theory of superfluidity in one dimension

A theory accounting for the dynamical aspects of the superfluid response of one dimensional (1D) quantum fluids is reported. In long 1D systems the onset of superfluidity is related to the dynamical suppression of quantum phase slips at low temperatures. The effect of this suppression as a function of frequency and temperature is discussed within the framework of the relevant correlation function that is accessible experimentally, namely the momentum response function. Application of these results to the understanding of the superfluid properties of helium confined in nanometer-size pores, edge dislocations in solid $^4$He, and ultra-cold atomic gases is also briefly discussed.

A semi-classical approach to electron spin resonance in quantum spin systems

We develop a semi-classical approximation to electron spin resonance in quantum spin systems, based on the rotor or non-linear sigma model. The classical time evolution is studied using molec- ular dynamics while random initial conditions are sampled using classical Monte Carlo methods. Although the approximation may be especially powerful in two dimensions, we apply it here to one- dimensional systems of large spin at intermediate temperatures, in the presence of staggered and uniform magnetic fields. We first test the validity of the semi-classical approximation by comparing the magnetization to quantum Monte Carlo results on S = 2 chains. Then we calculate the ESR spectrum, finding broad coexisting paramagnetic and spin wave resonances.

Boundary Conformal Field Theory and Entanglement Entropy in Two-Dimensional Quantum Lifshitz Critical Point

I discuss the von Neumann entanglement entropy in two-dimensional quantum Lifshitz criical point, namely in Rokhsar-Kivelson type critical wavefunctions. I follow the approach proposed by B. Hsu et al. [Phys. Rev. B 79, 115421 (2009)], but point out a subtle problem concerning compactification of replica boson fields: although one can define a set of new boson fields by linear combinations of the original fields, the new fields are not compactified independently. In order to systematically study boundary conformal field theory of multicomponent free bosons, I employ a geometric formulation based on compactification lattices. The result from the boundary conformal field theory agrees exactly with alternative calculations by J.-M. Stephan et al. [Phys. Rev. B 80, 184421 (2009)], confirming its universality as argued originally by B. Hsu et al.

Quantized magnetic moment at the edge of a single-walled carbon nanotube

We investigate many-body effects near the edge of a single-walled carbon nanotube and find it turns magnetic with quantized edge moment solely depends on the chiral vector, i.e. the topology of the carbon nanotube. The distribution of the edge moment reveals an approximate supersymmetry even in a realistic model. Our findings demonstrate crucial importance of the interplay between the electronic correlation and the edge morphology. The edge moment provides an excellent candidate for nanomagnet farbrication which has potential applications in biological and chemical detections, and in spintronics.

Entanglement spectrum of a topological phase in one dimension

We show that the Haldane phase of S=1 chains is characterized by a double degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. The degeneracy is protected by a set of symmetries (either the dihedral group of $π$-rotations about two orthogonal axes, time-reversal symmetry, or bond centered inversion symmetry), and cannot be lifted unless either a phase boundary to another, "topologically trivial", phase is crossed, or the symmetry is broken. More generally, these results offer a scheme to classify gapped phases of one dimensional systems. Physically, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum can be observed by adiabatically weakening a bond to zero, which leaves the two disconnected halves of the system in a finitely entangled state.

Quantum Critical Phenomena of 4He in Nanoporous Media

The superfluid transition in liquid 4He filled in Gelsil glass observed in recent experiments is discussed in the framework of quantum critical phenomena. We show that quantum fluctuations of phase are indeed important at the experimentally studied temperature range owing to the small pore size of Gelsil, in contrast to 4He filled in previously studied porous media such as Vycor glass. As a consequence of an effective particle-hole symmetry, the quantum critical phenomena of the system are described by the 4D XY universality class, except at very low temperatures. The simple scaling agrees with the experimental data remarkably well.

Analytic thermodynamics and thermometry of Gaudin-Yang Fermi gases

We study the thermodynamics of a one-dimensional attractive Fermi gas (the Gaudin-Yang model) with spin imbalance. The exact solution has been known from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for decades, but it involves an infinite number of coupled nonlinear integral equations whose physics is difficult to extract. Here the solution is analytically reduced to a simple, powerful set of four algebraic equations. The simplified equations become universal and exact in the experimental regime of strong interaction and relatively low temperature. Using the new formulation, we discuss the qualitative features of finite-temperature crossover and make quantitative predictions on the density profiles in traps. We propose a practical two-stage scheme to achieve accurate thermometry for a trapped spin-imbalanced Fermi gas.

Skyrmion in spinor condensates and its stability in trap potentials

A necessary condition for the existence of a skyrmion in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with $\mathrm{SU(2)}$ symmetry was recently provided by two of the authors [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 080403 (2006)], by mapping the problem to a classical particle in a potential subject to time-dependent dissipation. Here we further elaborate this approach. For two classes of models, we demonstrate the existence of the critical dissipation strength above which the skyrmion solution does not exist. Furthermore, we discuss the local stability of the skyrmion solution by considering the second-order variation. A sufficient condition for the local stability is given in terms of the ground-state energy of a one-dimensional quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian. This condition requires a minimum number of bosons, for a certain class of the trap potential. In the optimal case, the minimum number of bosons can be as small $\sim 10^4$.

Dynamics of one-dimensional Bose liquids: Andreev-like reflection at Y-junctions and absence of the Aharonov-Bohm effect

We study one dimensional Bose liquids of interacting ultracold atoms in the Y-shaped potential when each branch is filled with atoms. We find that the excitation packet incident on a single Y-junction should experience a negative density reflection analogous to the Andreev reflection at normal-superconductor interfaces, although the present system does not contain fermions. In a ring interferometer type configuration, we find that the transport is completely insensitive to the (effective) flux contained in the ring, in contrast to the Aharonov-Bohm effect of a single particle in the same geometry.

Magnetic-Field Induced Bose-Einstein Condensation of Magnons and Critical Behavior in Interacting Spin Dimer System TlCuCl$_3$

Magnetization measurements were performed to investigate the critical behavior of the field-induced magnetic ordering in gapped spin system TlCuCl$_3$. The critical density of the magnons was obtained as a function of temperature and the magnon-magnon interaction constant was evaluated. The experimental phase boundary for $T < 5$ K agrees almost perfectly with the magnon BEC theory based on the Hartree-Fock approximation with realistic dispersion relations. The phase boundary can be described by the power law $[H_{N}(T)-H_{c}] propto T^{phi}$. With decreasing fitting temperature range, the critical exponent ${phi}$ decreases and converges at $phi_{BEC} =3/2$ predicted by the magnon BEC theory.

Universal temperature dependence of the magnetization of gapped spin chains

Temperature dependence of the magnetization of the Haldane spin chain at finite magnetic field is analyzed systematically. Quantum Monte Carlo data indicates a clear minimum of magnetization as a function of temperature in the gapless regime. On the basis of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we argue that this minimum is rather universal and can be observed for general axially symmetric quasi-one-dimensional spin systems. Our argument is confirmed by the magnetic-field dependence of the spin-wave velocity obtained numerically. One can estimate a magnitude of the gap of any such systems by fitting the experimental data with the magnetization minimum.

Magnon bands of N-leg integer-spin antiferromagnetic systems in the weak interchain-coupling regime

Using the exact results of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and a few quantitative numerical data for integer-spin antiferromagnetic (AF) chains, we systematically estimate all magnon excitation energies of N-leg integer-spin AF ladders and tubes in the weak-interchain-coupling regime. Our method is based on a first-order perturbation theory for the strength of the interchain coupling. It can deal with any kind of interchain interactions, in principle. We confirm that results of the perturbation theory are in good agreement with those of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation and with our recent study based on a saddle-point approximation of the NLSM [Phys. Rev. B 72, 104438 (2005)]. Our theory further supports the existence of a Haldane (gapped) phase even in a d-dimensional (d\geq 2) spatially anisotropic integer-spin AF model, if the exchange coupling in one direction is sufficiently strong compared with those in all the other directions. The strategy in this paper is applicable to other N-leg systems consisting of gapped chains which low-energy physics is exactly or quantitatively known.

Reduced Density Matrices and Topological Order in a Quantum Dimer Model

Resonating valence bond (RVB) liquids in two dimensions are believed to exhibit topological order and to admit no local order parameter of any kind. This is a defining property of "liquids" but it has been explicitly confirmed only in a few exactly solvable models. In this paper, we investigate the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice. It possesses an RVB-type liquid phase, however, for which the absence of a local order parameter has not been proved. We examine the question numerically with a measure based on reduced density matrices. We find a scaling of the measure which strongly supports the absence of any local order parameter.

Topological degeneracy of non-Abelian states for dummies

We present a physical construction of degenerate groundstates of the Moore-Read Pfaffian states, which exhibits non-Abelian statistics, on general Riemann surface with genus g. The construction is given by a generalization of the recent argument [M.O. and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 060601 (2006)] which relates fraction- alization and topological order. The nontrivial groundstate degeneracy obtained by Read and Green [Phys. Rev. B 61, 10267 (2000)] based on differential geometry is reproduced exactly. Some restrictions on the statistics, due to the fractional charge of the quasiparticle are also discussed. Furthermore, the groundstate degeneracy of the p+ip superconductor in two dimensions, which is closely related to the Pfaffian states, is discussed with a similar construction.
