Monopoles and transverse knots

We present a framework for studying transverse knots and symplectic surfaces utilizing the Seiberg-Witten monopole equation. Our primary approach involves investigating an equivariant Seiberg-Witten theory introduced by Baraglia-Hekmati on branched covers, incorporating invariant contact/symplectic structures. Within this framework, we introduce a novel slice-torus invariant denoted as $q_M(K)$. This invariant can be viewed as the Seiberg-Witten analog of Hendricks-Lipshitz-Sarker's $q_τ$ invariant, with a signature correction term. One property of the invariant $q_M(K)$ is an adjunction equality for properly embedded connected symplectic surfaces in the symplectic filling $D^4\# m \overline{\mathbb{C}P}^2$. The proof of this equality utilizes the equivariant version of the homotopical contact invariant introduced by the authors, leading to a transverse knot invariant. Another ingredient of the proof involves constructing invariant symplectic structures on branched covering spaces branched along properly embedded symplectic surfaces in symplectic fillings. As an application of the invariant $q_M(K)$, we determine the value of any slice-torus invariant within a permissible deviation of $2$ for squeezed knots concordant to certain Montesinos knots. Additionally, we provide an obstruction to realizing second homology classes of $D^4 \#m \overline{\mathbb{C}P}^2$ as connected embedded symplectic surfaces with transverse knot boundary or connected embedded Lagrangian surfaces with collarable Legendrian knot boundary. Moreover, we introduce a new obstruction to certain Montesinos knots being quasipositive, which is described only in terms of slice genera and their signatures.

Exotic Dehn twists on 4-manifolds

We initiate the study of exotic Dehn twists along 3-manifolds $\neq S^3$ inside $4$-manifolds, which produces the first known examples of exotic diffeomorphisms of contractible 4-manifolds, more generally of definite 4-manifolds, and exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with $\neq S^3$ boundary that survive after one stabilization. We also construct the smallest closed 4-manifold known to support an exotic diffeomorphism. These exotic diffeomorphisms are the Dehn twists along certain Seifert fibered 3-manifolds. As a consequence, we get loops of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds that topologically extend to some 4-manifolds $X$ but not smoothly so, implying the non-surjectivity of $π_1(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to π_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$. Our method uses $2$-parameter families Seiberg-Witten theory over $\mathbb{RP}^2$, while known methods to detect exotic diffeomorphisms used $1$-parameter families gauge-theoretic invariants. Using a similar strategy, we construct a new kind of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, given as commutators of diffeomorphisms.

Involutions and the Chern-Simons filtration in instanton Floer homology

Building on the work of Nozaki, Sato and Taniguchi, we develop an instanton-theoretic invariant aimed at studying strong corks and equivariant bounding. Our construction utilizes the Chern-Simons filtration and is qualitatively different from previous Floer-theoretic methods used to address these questions. As an application, we give an example of a cork whose boundary involution does not extend over any 4-manifold $X$ with $H_1(X, \mathbb{Z}_2) = 0$ and $b_2(X) \leq 1 $, and a strong cork which survives stabilization by either of $n\smash{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ or $n\smash{\overline{\mathbb{CP}}}^2$. We also prove that every nontrivial linear combination of $1/n$-surgeries on the strongly invertible knot $\smash{\overline{9}_{46}}$ constitutes a strong cork. Although Yang-Mills theory has been used to study corks via the Donaldson invariant, this is the first instance where the critical values of the Chern-Simons functional have been utilized to produce such examples. Finally, we discuss the geography question for nonorientable surfaces in the case of extremal normal Euler number.

Involutions, links, and Floer cohomologies

We develop a version of Seiberg--Witten Floer cohomology/homotopy type for a spin$^c$ 4-manifold with boundary and with an involution which reverses the spin$^c$ structure, as well as a version of Floer cohomology/homotopy type for oriented links with non-zero determinant. This framework generalizes the previous work of the authors regarding Floer homotopy type for spin 3-manifolds with involutions and for knots. Based on this Floer cohomological setting, we prove Frøyshov-type inequalities which relate topological quantities of 4-manifolds with certain equivariant homology cobordism invariants. The inequalities and homology cobordism invariants have applications to the topology of unoriented surfaces, Nielsen realization problem for non-spin 4-manifolds, and non-smoothable unoriented surfaces in 4-manifolds.

From diffeomorphisms to exotic phenomena in small 4-manifolds

We provide an approach to study exotic phenomena in relatively small 4-manifolds that captures many different exotic behaviors under one umbrella. These phenomena include exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds with $b_2=1$, examples of strong corks, and exotic codimension-$1$ embeddings into $\mathbb{C} P^2 \# - \mathbb{C} P^2$ that survive external stabilization. We also give a new way to detect a homeomorphism of a 4-manifold that is not topologically isotopic to any diffeomorphism and give lower bounds of relative genera of certain knots. Our primary tools are constraints on diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds obtained from families Seiberg-Witten theory.

Exotic codimension-1 submanifolds in 4-manifolds and stabilizations

In a small simply-connected closed 4-manifold, we construct infinitely many pairs of exotic codimension-$1$ submanifolds with diffeomorphic complements that remain exotic after any number of stabilizations by $ S^2 \times S^2$. We also give new constructions of exotic embeddings of 3-spheres in 4-manifolds with diffeomorphic complements.

Instantons, special cycles, and knot concordance

We introduce a framework for defining concordance invariants of knots using equivariant singular instanton Floer theory with Chern-Simons filtration. It is demonstrated that many of the concordance invariants defined using instantons in recent years can be recovered from our framework. This relationship allows us to compute Kronheimer and Mrowka's $s^\sharp$-invariant and fractional ideal invariants for two-bridge knots, and more. In particular, we prove a quasi-additivity property of $s^\sharp$, answering a question of Gong. We also introduce invariants that are formally similar to the Heegaard Floer $τ$-invariant of Oszváth and Szabó and the $\varepsilon$-invariant of Hom. We provide evidence for a precise relationship between these latter two invariants and the $s^\sharp$-invariant. Some new topological applications that follow from our techniques are as follows. First, we produce a wide class of patterns whose induced satellite maps on the concordance group have the property that their images have infinite rank, giving a partial answer to a conjecture of Hedden and Pinzón-Caicedo. Second, we produce infinitely many two-bridge knots $K$ which are torsion in the algebraic concordance group and yet have the property that the set of positive $1/n$-surgeries on $K$ is a linearly independent set in the homology cobordism group. Finally, for a knot which is quasi-positive and not slice, we prove that any concordance from the knot admits an irreducible $SU(2)$-representation on the fundamental group of the concordance complement. While much of the paper focuses on constructions using singular instanton theory with the traceless meridional holonomy condition, we also develop an analogous framework for concordance invariants in the case of arbitrary holonomy parameters, and some applications are given in this setting.

A note on generalized Thurston--Bennequin inequalities

We give a generalized Thurston--Bennequin-type inequality for links in $S^3$ using a Bauer--Furuta-type invariant for 4-manifolds with contact boundary. As a special case, we also give an adjunction inequality for smoothly embedded orientable surfaces with negative intersection in a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold whose non-equivariant Bauer--Furuta invariant is non-zero.

An adjunction inequality for the Bauer-Furuta type invariants, with applications to sliceness and 4-manifold topology

Our main result gives an adjunction inequality for embedded surfaces in certain $4$-manifolds with contact boundary under a non-vanishing assumption on the Bauer--Furuta type invariants. Using this, we give infinitely many knots in $S^3$ that are not smoothly H-slice (that is, bounding a null-homologous disk) in many $4$-manifolds but they are topologically H-slice. In particular, we give such knots in the boundaries of the punctured elliptic surfaces $E(2n)$. In addition, we give obstructions to codimension-0 orientation-reversing embedding of weak symplectic fillings with $b_3=0$ into closed symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_1=0$ and $b_2^+\equiv 3$ mod $4$. From here we prove a Bennequin type inequality for symplectic caps of $(S^3,ξ_{std})$. We also show that any weakly symplectically fillable $3$-manifold bounds a $4$-manifold with at least two smooth structures.

Seifert hypersurfaces of 2-knots and Chern-Simons functional

For a given smooth $2$-knot in $S^4$, we relate the existence of a smooth Seifert hypersurface of a certain class to the existence of irreducible $ SU(2)$-representations of its knot group. For example, we see that any smooth $2$-knot having the Poincaré homology $3$-sphere as a Seifert hypersurface has at least four irreducible $SU(2)$-representations of its knot group. This result is false in the topological category. The proof uses a quantitative formulation of instanton Floer homology. Using similar techniques, we also obtain similar results about codimension-$1$ embeddings of homology $3$-spheres into closed definite $4$-manifolds and a fixed point type theorem for instanton Floer homology.

Filtered instanton Floer homology and the homology cobordism group

For any $s \in [-\infty, 0] $ and oriented homology 3-sphere $Y$, we introduce a homology cobordism invariant $r_s(Y)\in (0,\infty]$. The values $\{r_s(Y)\}$ are included in the critical values of the $SU(2)$-Chern-Simons functional of $Y$, and we show a negative definite cobordism inequality and a connected sum formula for $r_s$. As applications, we obtain several new results on the homology cobordism group. First, we give infinitely many homology 3-spheres which cannot bound any definite 4-manifold. Next, we show that if the 1-surgery of $S^3$ along a knot has the Frøyshov invariant negative, then all positive $1/n$-surgeries along the knot are linearly independent in the homology cobordism group. In another direction, we use $\{r_s\}$ to define a filtration on the homology cobordism group which is parametrized by $[0,\infty]$. Moreover, we compute an approximate value of $r_s$ for the hyperbolic 3-manifold obtained by $1/2$-surgery along the mirror of the knot $5_2$.

Involutions, knots, and Floer K-theory

We establish a version of Seiberg--Witten Floer $K$-theory for knots, as well as a version of Seiberg-Witten Floer $K$-theory for 3-manifolds with involution. The main theorems are 10/8-type inequalities for knots and for involutions. The 10/8-inequality for knots yields numerous applications to knots, such as lower bounds on stabilizing numbers and relative genera. We also give obstructions to extending involutions on 3-manifolds to 4-manifolds, and detect non-smoothable involutions on 4-manifolds with boundary.

Seiberg-Witten Floer homotopy contact invariant

We introduce a Floer homotopy version of the contact invariant introduced by Kronheimer-Mrowka-Ozváth-Szabó. Moreover, we prove a gluing formula relating our invariant with the first author's Bauer-Furuta type invariant, which refines Kronheimer-Mrowka's invariant for 4-manifolds with contact boundary. As an application, we give a constraint for a certain class of symplectic fillings using equivariant KO-cohomology.

Positive scalar curvature and homology cobordism invariants

We determine the local equivalence class of the Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy type of a spin rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ embedded into a spin rational homology $S^{1} \times S^{3}$ with a positive scalar curvature metric so that $Y$ generates the third homology. The main tool of the proof is a relative Bauer-Furuta-type invariant on a periodic-end 4-manifold. As a consequence, we give obstructions to positive scalar curvature metrics on spin rational homology $S^{1} \times S^{3}$, typically described as the coincidence of various Frøyshov-type invariants. This coincidence also yields alternative proofs of two known obstructions by Jianfeng Lin and by the authors for the same class of 4-manifolds.

The groups of diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary

We give constraints on smooth families of 4-manifolds with boundary using Manolescu's Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy type, provided that the fiberwise restrictions of the families to the boundaries are trivial families of 3-manifolds. As an application, we show that, for a simply-connected oriented compact smooth 4-manifold $X$ with boundary with an assumption on the Frøyshov invariant or the Manolescu invariants $α, β, γ$ of $\partial X$, the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X,\partial) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X,\partial)$ between the groups of diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms which fix the boundary pointwise is not a weak homotopy equivalence. This combined with a classical result in dimension 3 implies that the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X)$ is also not a weak homotopy equivalence under the same assumption on $\partial X$. Our constraints generalize both of constraints on smooth families of closed 4-manifolds proven by Baraglia and a Donaldson-type theorem for smooth 4-manifolds with boundary originally due to Frøyshov.

Rational homology 3-spheres and simply connected definite bounding

For each rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ which bounds simply connected definite 4-manifolds of both signs, we construct an infinite family of irreducible rational homology 3-spheres which are homology cobordant to $Y$ but cannot bound any simply connected definite 4-manifold. As a corollary, for any coprime integers $p,q$, we obtain an infinite family of irreducible rational homology 3-spheres which are homology cobordant to the lens space $L(p,q)$ but cannot obtained by a knot surgery.

Prolonged photo-carriers generated in a massive-and-anisotropic Dirac material

Transient electron-hole pairs generated in semiconductors can exhibit unconventional excitonic condensation. Anisotropy in the carrier mass is considered as the key to elongate the life time of the pairs, and hence to stabilize the condensation. Here we employ time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to explore the dynamics of photo-generated carriers in black phosphorus. The electronic structure above the Fermi level has been successfully observed, and a massive-and-anisotropic Dirac-type dispersions are confirmed; more importantly, we directly observe that the photo-carriers generated across the direct band gap have the life time exceeding 400 ps. Our finding confirms that black phosphorus is a suitable platform for excitonic condensations, and also open an avenue for future applications in broadband mid-infrared BP-based optoelectronic devices.
