Dynamics of Superconformal Axion: Quality and Scalegenesis

We explore a dynamical mechanism to realize the emergence of a global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry and its spontaneous breaking at an intermediate scale for an axion solution to the strong CP problem. Such a dynamics is provided by a new supersymmetric QCD near the middle of conformal window that couples to fields spontaneously breaking the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry. A large anomalous dimension of the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields leads to the suppression of explicit $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$-violating higher dimensional operators. The $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking vacuum is generated at a scale hierarchically smaller than the Planck scale by a non-perturbative effect. The $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking drives the conformal breaking, and all the new quarks become massive. The axion potential is generated by the ordinary color $SU(3)_C$ effect as the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry is only anomalous under the $SU(3)_C$. The saxion direction is stabilized by supersymmetry breaking and cosmologically harmless.

Dissipation of axion energy via the Schwinger and Witten effects

In the presence of an anomalous CP phase in a U(1) gauge theory, a monopole becomes a dyon via the Witten effect. When the anomalous CP phase is promoted to a dynamical field, the axion, the electric charge of the dyon changes according to the coherent motion of the axion oscillation. Once the electric charge exceeds a certain threshold, the Schwinger pair production of charged particles becomes efficient near the surface of the dyon. These non-perturbative effects lead to the back reaction of the axion dynamics by causing the dissipation of the axion oscillation energy and the change of the effective potential due to the Witten effect. Taking these effects into account, we consider the dynamics of the whole system, including the axion, monopole, and charged heavy vector bosons, and discuss to what extent the axion abundance is modified. We also discuss the electric dipole radiation from a bound state of a monopole-anti-monopole pair due to the axion coherent oscillations.

Spontaneous Baryogenesis from Axions with Generic Couplings

Axion-like particles can source the baryon asymmetry of our Universe through spontaneous baryogenesis. Here we clarify that this is a generic outcome for essentially any coupling of an axion-like particle to the Standard Model, requiring only a non-zero velocity of the classical axion field while baryon or lepton number violating interactions are present in thermal bath. In particular, coupling the axions only to gluons is sufficient to generate a baryon asymmetry in the presence of electroweak sphalerons or the Weinberg operator. Deriving the transport equation for an arbitrary set of couplings of the axion-like particle, we provide a general framework in which these results can be obtained immediately. If all the operators involved are efficient, it suffices to solve an algebraic equation to obtain the final asymmetries. Otherwise one needs to solve a simple set of differential equations. This formalism clarifies some theoretical subtleties such as redundancies in the axion coupling to the Standard Model particles associated with a field rotation. We demonstrate how our formalism automatically evades potential pitfalls in the calculation of the final baryon asymmetry.

Dark baryon from pure Yang-Mills theory and its GW signature from cosmic strings

We point out that SO($2N$) pure Yang-Mills theory provides a candidate for dark matter (DM) without the explicit need to impose any additional symmetry. The DM candidate is a particular type of glueball, which we refer to as a baryonic glueball, that is naturally stable and produced by a novel production mechanism for a moderately large $N$. In this case, the intercommutation probability of cosmic strings (or macroscopic color flux tubes) is quite low, which offers characteristic gravitational wave signals to test our model. In particular, our model can simultaneously account for both abundance of DM and the recently reported gravitational wave signals detected in pulsar timing array experiments, including NANOGrav.

Can baryon asymmetry be explained by a large initial value before inflation?

We show that the baryon asymmetry of the Universe cannot be explained by a large initial value before inflation because it inevitably predicts correlated baryon isocurvature perturbations that are already excluded by cosmic microwave background observations. Similar arguments can generally be applied to some models of dark matter.

On the primordial black hole formation in hybrid inflation

We revisit the scenario of primordial black hole (PBH) formation from large curvature perturbations generated during the waterfall phase transition in hybrid inflation models. In a minimal setup considered in the literature, the mass and abundance of PBHs are correlated and astrophysical size PBHs tend to be overproduced. This is because a longer length scale for curvature perturbations (or a larger PBH mass) requires a longer waterfall regime with a flatter potential, which results in overproduction of curvature perturbations. However, in this paper, we discuss that the higher-dimensional terms for the inflaton potential affect the dynamics during the waterfall phase transition and show that astrophysical size PHBs of order $10^{17\text{--}23} \, {\rm g}$ (which can explain the whole dark matter) can form in some parameter space consistently with any existing constraints. The scenario can be tested by observing the induced gravitational waves from scalar perturbations by future gravitational wave experiments, such as LISA.

Quantum decay of scalar and vector boson stars and oscillons into gravitons

We point out that a soliton such as an oscillon or boson star inevitably decays into gravitons through gravitational interactions. These decay processes exist even if there are no apparent self-interactions of the constituent field, scalar or vector, since they are induced by gravitational interactions. Hence, our results provide a strict upper limit on the lifetime of oscillons and boson stars including the dilute axion star. We also calculate the spectrum of the graviton background from decay of solitons.

Stochastic dynamics of multi-waterfall hybrid inflation and formation of primordial black holes

We show that a hybrid inflation model with multiple waterfall fields can result in the formation of primordial black hole (PBH) with an astrophysical size, by using an advanced algorithm to follow the stochastic dynamics of the waterfall fields. This is in contrast to the case with a single waterfall field, where the wavelength of density perturbations is usually too short to form PBHs of the astrophysical scale (or otherwise PBH are overproduced and the model is ruled out) unless the inflaton potential is tuned. In particular, we demonstrate that PBHs with masses of order $10^{20}\, {\rm g}$ can form after hybrid inflation consistently with other cosmological observations if the number of waterfall fields is about 5 for the case of instantaneous reheating. Observable gravitational waves are produced from the second-order effect of large curvature perturbations as well as from the dynamics of texture or global defects that form after the waterfall phase transition.

A new constraint on primordial lepton flavour asymmetries

A chiral chemical potential present in the early universe can source helical hypermagnetic fields through the chiral plasma instability. If these hypermagnetic fields survive until the electroweak phase transition, they source a contribution to the baryon asymmetry of the universe. In this letter, we demonstrate that lepton flavour asymmetries above $|μ|/T \sim 9 \times 10^{-3}$ trigger this mechanism even for vanishing total lepton number. This excludes the possibility of such large lepton flavour asymmetries present at temperatures above $10^6$ GeV, setting a constraint which is about two orders of magnitude stronger than the current CMB and BBN limits.

Wash-in leptogenesis after axion inflation

CP violation and the violation of baryon-minus-lepton number B-L do not necessarily have to occur simultaneously in order to accomplish successful leptogenesis. Instead, it suffices if new CP-violating interactions at high energies result in primordial charge asymmetries, which are then reprocessed into a nonvanishing B-L asymmetry by right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) at lower energies. In this paper, we study this novel mechanism known as "wash-in leptogenesis", utilizing axion inflation as the source of high-scale CP violation. We specifically consider axion inflation coupled to the Standard Model hypercharge sector, which results in the dual production of hypermagnetic helicity and fermionic charge asymmetries. Although the survival of these charges is endangered by sphaleron processes, magnetic diffusion, and the chiral plasma instability, we find a large range of viable scenarios. We consistently account for RHN flavor effects and coherence among the Standard Model lepton flavors across a wide range of RHN masses. We find a lower bound of 10^(5...9) GeV on the mass of the lightest RHN involved in wash-in leptogenesis, depending on the onset of turbulence in the chiral plasma and the Hubble scale of inflation. Our model is representative of a broader class of new leptogenesis scenarios and suggests interesting observational signatures with regard to intergalactic magnetic fields, primordial black holes, and gravitational waves.

Formation of hot spots around small primordial black holes

In this paper, we investigate the thermalization of Hawking radiation from primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early Universe, taking into account the interference effect on thermalization of high energy particles, known as Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. Small PBHs with masses $ \lesssim 10^9 \, \mathrm{g} $ completely evaporate before the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The Hawking radiation emitted from these PBHs heats up the ambient plasma with temperature lower than the Hawking temperature, which results in a non-trivial temperature profile around the PBHs, namely a hot spot surrounding a PBH with a broken power-law tail. We find that the hot spot has a core with a radius much larger than the black hole horizon and its highest temperature is independent of the initial mass of the PBH such as $2 \times 10^{9} \, {\rm GeV} \times (α/0.1)^{19/3}$, where $α$ generically represents the fine-structure constants. We also briefly discuss the implications of the existence of the hot spot for phenomenology.

Cosmic F- and D-strings from pure Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the formation of cosmic strings or macroscopic color flux tubes after the deconfinement/confinement phase transition in the pure Yang-Mills theory. Based on holographic dual descriptions, these cosmic strings can be interpreted as fundamental (F-) strings or wrapped D-branes (which we call as D-strings) in the gravity side, depending on the structure of the gauge group. In fact, the reconnection probabilities of the F- and D-strings are suppressed by factors of $1/N^2$ and $e^{-c N}$, where $c = \mathcal{O}(1)$, in a large-$N$ limit, respectively. Supported by the picture of electric-magnetic duality, we discuss that color flux tubes form after the deconfinement/confinement phase transition, just like the formation of local cosmic strings after spontaneous symmetry breaking in the weak-U(1) gauge theory. We use an extended velocity-dependent one-scale model to describe the dynamics of the string network and calculate the gravitational wave signals from string loops. We also discuss the dependence on the size of produced string loops.

Cosmic strings from pure Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the formation of cosmic strings or macroscopic color flux tubes at the phase transition from the deconfinement to confinement phase in pure Yang-Mills (YM) theory, such as SU($N$), Sp($N$), SO($N$), and Spin($N$), based on the current understanding of theoretical physics. According to the holographic dual descriptions, the cosmic strings are dual to fundamental strings or wrapped D-branes in the gravity side depending on the structure of the gauge group, and the reconnection probability is suppressed by $\mathcal{O}(N^{-2})$ and $e^{-\mathcal{O}(N)}$, respectively. The pure YM theory thus provides a simple realization of cosmic F- and D-strings without the need for a brane-inflationary scenario or extra dimension. We also review the stability of cosmic strings based on the concept of 1-form symmetry, which further implies the existence of a baryon vertex in some YM theory. We calculate the gravitational wave spectrum that is emitted from the cosmic strings based on an extended velocity-dependent one-scale model and discuss its detectability based on ongoing and planned gravitational-wave experiments. In particular, the SKA and LISA can observe gravitational signals if the confinement scale is higher than $\mathcal{O}(10^{12})\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and $\mathcal{O}(10^{10})\,\mathrm{GeV}$ for SU($N$) with $N = \mathcal{O}(1)$, respectively.

Axion dark matter from first-order phase transition, and very high energy photons from GRB 221009A

We study an axion-like particle (ALP) that experiences the first-order phase transition with respect to its mass or potential minimum. This can be realized if the ALP obtains a potential from non-perturbative effects of SU($N$) gauge theory that is confined via the first-order phase transition, or if the ALP is trapped in a false vacuum at high temperatures until it starts to oscillate about the true minimum. The resulting ALP abundance is significantly enhanced compared to the standard misalignment mechanism, explaining dark matter in a broader parameter space that is accessible to experiments e.g. IAXO, ALPS-II, and DM-radio. Furthermore, the viable parameter space includes a region of the mass $m_a \simeq 10^{-7} - 10^{-8}$ eV and the ALP-photon coupling $g_{a γγ} \simeq 10^{-11} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ that can explain the recent observation of very high energy photons from GRB221009A via axion-photon oscillations. The parameter region suggests that the FOPT can generate the gravitational wave that explains the NANOGrav hint. If the ALP in this region explains dark matter, then the ALP has likely experienced a first-order phase transition.

Early-Universe Model Building

Theoretical investigations into the evolution of the early universe are an essential part of particle physics that allow us to identify viable extensions to the Standard Model as well as motivated parameter space that can be probed by various experiments and observations. In this white paper, we review particle physics models of the early universe. First, we outline various models that explain two essential ingredients of the early universe (dark matter and baryon asymmetry) and those that seek to address current observational anomalies. We then discuss dynamics of the early universe in models of neutrino masses, axions, and several solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem. Finally, we review solutions to naturalness problems of the Standard Model that employ cosmological dynamics.

Semiclassical analysis of axion-assisted and axion-driven pair production

We study the pair production of fermions in a time dependent axion background with and without an electric background. We construct the adiabatic mode functions which incorporate the gauge field and the axion velocity dependence of the dispersion relation. The semiclassical approach using this adiabatic basis shows two types of pair production. One is axion-assisted pair production: the presence of the axion velocity gives enhancement and interference effects on the pair production driven by the electric field. The other is axion-driven pair production: the time variation of the axion velocity causes the pair production even though the electric field is absent.

Leptoflavorgenesis: baryon asymmetry of the Universe from lepton flavor violation

Charged-lepton flavor violation (CLFV) is a smoking-gun signature of physics beyond the Standard Model. The discovery of CLFV in upcoming experiments would indicate that CLFV processes must have been efficient in the early Universe at relatively low temperatures. In this letter, we point out that such efficient CLFV interactions open up new ways of creating the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. First, we quote the two-loop corrections from charged-lepton Yukawa interactions to the chemical transport in the Standard Model plasma, which imply that nonzero lepton flavor asymmetries summing up to $B-L = 0$ are enough to generate the baryon asymmetry. Then, we describe two scenarios of what we call {\it leptoflavorgenesis}, where efficient CLFV processes are responsible for the generation of primordial lepton flavor asymmetries that are subsequently converted to a baryon asymmetry by weak sphaleron processes. Here, the conversion factor from lepton flavor asymmetry to baryon asymmetry is suppressed by charged-lepton Yukawa couplings squared, which provides a natural explanation for the smallness of the observed baryon-to-photon ratio.
