Determination of Neutrino Mass Texture for Maximal CP Violation

We show a general form of neutrino mass matrix (M), whose matrix elements are denoted by M_{ij} (i.j=e, mu, tau) as flavor neutrino masses, that induces maximal CP violation as well as maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing. The masses of M_{mu mu}, M_{tau tau} and M_{mu tau}+sigma M_{ee} (sigma =\pm 1) turn out to be completely determined by M_{e mu} and M_{e tau} for given mixing angles. The appearance of CP violation is found to originate from the interference between the mu-tau symmetric part of M and its breaking part. If |M_{e mu}|=|M_{e tau}|, giving either M_{e mu}=-sigma e^{i theta} M_{e tau} or M_{e mu}=-sigma e^{i theta}M*_{e tau} with a phase parameter theta, is further imposed, we find that |M_{mu mu}|=|M_{tau tau}|is also satisfied. These two constraints can be regarded as an extended version of the constraints in the mu-tau symmetric texture given by M_{e mu}=-sigma M_{e tau} and M_{mu mu}=M_{tau tau}. Majorana CP violation becomes active if arg(M_{mu tau})\neq arg(M_{e mu})+theta/2 for M_{e mu}=-sigma e^{i theta} M_{e tau} and if arg(M_{mu tau})\neq theta/2 for M_{e mu}=-sigma e^{i theta} M*_{e tau}.

Neutrino Mass Textures with Maximal CP Violation

We have found three types of neutrino mass textures, which give maximal CP-violation as well as maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing. These textures are described by six real mass parameters: one specified by two complex flavor neutrino masses and two constrained ones and the others specified by three complex flavor neutrino masses. In each texture, we calculate mixing angles and masses as well as Majorana CP phases.

μ-τSymmetry and Maximal CP Violation

We argue the possibility that a real part of a flavor neutrino mass matrix only respects a mu-tau symmetry. This possibility is shown to be extended to more general case with a phase parameter θ, where the mu-tau symmetric part has a phase of θ/2. This texture shows maximal CP violation and no Majorana CP violation.

Constraints on Flavor Neutrino Masses and sin^2(2theta_{12})>>sin^2(theta_{13}) in Neutrino Oscillations

To realize the condition of sin^2(2theta_{12})>>sin^2(theta_{13}), we find constraints on flavor neutrino masses M_{ij} (ij=e,μ,τ): C1) c_{23}^2 M_{μμ} + s_{23}^2 M_{ττ} \approx 2 s_{23} c_{23}M_{μτ} + M_{ee} and/or C2) |c_{23}M_{eμ} -s_{23}M_{eτ}|>> |s_{23}M_{eμ} +c_{23}M_{eτ}|, where c_{23}=cos(theta_{23}) (s_{23}=sin(theta_{23})) and theta_{12}, theta_{13} and theta_{23} are the mixing angles for three flavor neutrinos. The applicability of C1) and C2) is examined in models with one massless neutrino and two massive neutrinos suggested by \det(M)=0, where M is a mass matrix constructed from M_{ij} (i,j=e,μ,τ). To make definite predictions on neutrino masses and mixings, especially on sin(theta_{13}), that enable us to trace C1) and C2), M is assumed to possess texture zeros or to be constrained by textures with M_{μμ}=M_{ττ} or M_{eτ}=\pm M_{eμ} which turn out to ensure the emergence of the maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing at sin(theta_{13})->0. It is found that C1) is used by textures such as M_{eμ}=0 or M_{eτ}=0 while C2) is used by textures such as M_{eτ}=\pm M_{eμ}.

General Property of Neutrino Mass Matrix and CP Violation

It is found that the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle of θ_{atm} is determined to be \tanθ_{atm}=Im(B)/Im(C) for B=M_{ν_eν_μ} and C=M_{ν_eν_τ}, where M_{ij} is the ij element of M^\dagger_νM_νwith M_νas a complex symmetric neutrino mass matrix in the (ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ)-basis. Another mixing angle, θ_{13}, defined as U_{e3} = \sinθ_{13}e^{-iδ} is subject to the condition: \tan 2θ_{13} \propto |\sinθ_{atm}B+\cosθ_{atm}C| and the CP-violating Dirac phase of δis identical to the phase of \sinθ_{atm}B^\ast+\cosθ_{atm}C^\ast. The smallest value of |\sin θ_{13}| is achieved at \tanθ_{atm}=-Re(C)/Re(B) that yields the maximal CP-violation and that implies C=-κB^\ast for the maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing of \tanθ_{atm}=κ=\pm 1. The generic smallness of |\sin θ_{13}| can be ascribed to the tiny violation of the electron number conservation.

Strongly Coupled N=1 Supersymmetric SO(N_c) Gauge Theories without Magnetic Degrees of Freedom

In strongly coupled supersymmetric SO(N_c) gauge theories with N_f-quarks for N_c-2<=N_f(<=3(N_c-2)/2), their low-energy physics can be described by Nambu-Goldstone superfields associated with dynamical flavor symmetry breaking, which should be compared with the absence of flavor symmetry breaking in the conventional description in terms of magnetic degrees of freedom. The presence of the flavor symmetry breaking is confirmed by the well-known instanton effects in SO(N_c) with N_f=N_c-2, which are also described by our proposed effective superpotential. For N_f>=N_c-1, our effective superpotentials utilize baryonic configurations as well as mesons composed of two quarks. The baryonic configurations are supplied by "diquarks" made of N_c-1 quarks for N_f=N_c-1 and by baryons composed of N_c quarks for N_c>=N_f. It is argued that our effective superpotentials exhibit the holomorphic decoupling property, the anomaly-matching property and correct description of instanton effects in SO(N_c) when N_f-N_c+2 quarks become massive if N_f>=N_c-1.

Bilarge Neutrino Mixing and μ- τPermutation Symmetry for Two-loop Radiative Mechanism

The presence of approximate electron number conservation and μ-τpermutation symmetry of S_2 is shown to naturally provide bilarge neutrino mixing. First, the bimaximal neutrino mixing together with U_{e3}=0 is guaranteed to appear owing to S_2 and, then, the bilarge neutrino mixing together with |U_{e3}|<<1 arises as a result of tiny violation of S_2. The observed mass hierarchy of Δm^2_{\odot}<<Δm^2_{atm} is subject to another tiny violation of the electron number conservation. This scenario is realized in a specific model based on SU(3)_L x U(1)_N with two-loop radiative mechanism for neutrino masses. The radiative effects from heavy leptons contained in lepton triplets generate the bimaximal structure and those from charged leptons, which break S_2, generate the bilarge structure together with |U_{e3}|<<1. To suppress dangerous flavor-changing neutral current interactions due to Higgs exchanges especially for quarks, this S_2 symmetry is extended to a discrete Z_8 symmetry, which also ensures the absence of one-loop radiative mechanism.

Flavor Symmetry Breaking in Strongly Coupled N=1 Supersymmetric SO(N_c) Gauge Theory with N_f=N_c-2

In the SO(N_c) gauge theory with N_f quarks for N_f=N_c-2, its instanton effects indicate the signal of dynamical flavor symmetry breakdown of SU(N_f) to SO(N_f), which is not described by the conventional "magnetic" degree's of freedom. It is argued that this breaking is well described by our effective superpotential consisting of "electric" quarks and gluons instead of monopoles of SO(N_c). The low-energy particles include the Nambu-Goldstone superfields associated with this breakdown. The proposed superpotential is found to exhibit the holomorphic decoupling property and the anomaly-matching property on a residual chiral U(1) symmetry.

Physics of Strongly Coupled N=1 Supersymmetric SO(N_c) Gauge Theories

We construct an effective superpotential that describes dynamical flavor symmetry breaking in supersymmetric N=1 SO(N_c) theories with N_f-flavor quarks for N_f >= N_c. Our superpotential induces spontaneous flavor symmetry breaking of SU(N_f) down to SO(N_c)xSU(N_f-N_c) as nonabelian residual groups and respects the anomaly-matching property owing to the appearance of massless composite Nambu-Goldstone superfields. In massive SO(N_c) theories, our superpotential provides holomorphic decoupling property and consistent vacuum structure with instanton effect if N_c-2 quarks remain massless. This superpotential may reflect the remnant of physics corresponding to N=2 SO(N_c) theories near the Chebyshev point, which also exhibits dynamical flavor symmetry breaking.

Large Solar Neutrino Mixing and Radiative Neutrino Mechanism

We find that the presence of a global $L_e-L_μ-L_τ$ ($\equiv L^\prime$) symmetry and an $S_2$ permutation symmetry for the $μ$- and $τ$-families supplemented by a discrete $Z_4$ symmetry naturally leads to almost maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and large solar neutrino mixing, which arise, respectively, from type II seesaw mechanism initiated by an $S_2$-symmetric triplet Higgs scalar $s$ with $L^\prime=2$ and from radiative mechanism of the Zee type initiated by two singly charged scalars, an $S_2$-symmetric $h^+$ with $L^\prime=0$ and an $S_2$-antisymmetric $h^{\prime +}$ with $L^\prime=2$. The almost maximal mixing for atmospheric neutrinos is explained by the appearance of the democratic coupling of $s$ to neutrinos ensured by $S_2$ and $Z_4$ while the large mixing for solar neutrinos is explained by the similarity of $h^+$- and $h^{\prime +}$-couplings described by $f^h_+\sim f^h_-$ and $μ_+\simμ_-$, where $f^h_+$ ($f^h_-$) and $μ_+$ ($μ_-$) stand for $h^+$ ($h^{\prime +}$)-couplings, respectively, to leptons and to Higgs scalars.

Large Solar Neutrino Mixing in an Extended Zee Model

The Zee model, which employs the standard Higgs scalar ($ϕ$) with its duplicate ($ϕ^\prime$) and a singly charged scalar ($h^+$), can utilize two global symmetries associated with the conservation of the numbers of $ϕ$ and $ϕ^\prime$, $N_{ϕ,ϕ^\prime}$, where $N_ϕ+N_{ϕ^\prime}$ coincides with the hypercharge while $N_ϕ-N_{ϕ^\prime}$ ($\equiv X$) is a new conserved charge, which is identical to $L_e-L_μ-L_τ$ for the left-handed leptons. Charged leptons turn out to have $e$-$μ$ and $e$-$τ$ mixing masses, which are found to be crucial for the large solar neutrino mixing. In an extended version of the Zee model with an extra triplet Higgs scalar (s), neutrino oscillations are described by three steps: 1) the maximal atmospheric mixing is induced by democratic mass terms supplied by $s$ with $X$=2 that can initiate the type II seesaw mechanism for the smallness of these masses; 2) the maximal solar neutrino mixing is triggered by the creation of radiative masses by $h^+$ with $X$ = 0; 3) the large solar neutrino mixing is finally induced by a $ν_μ$-$ν_τ$ mixing arising from the rotation of the radiative mass terms as a result of the diagonalization that converts $e$-$μ$ and $e$-$τ$ mixing masses into the electron mass.

The Interplay between Neutrinos and Charged Leptons in the Minimal SU(3)_LxU(1)_N Gauge Model

In the minimal SU(3)_LxU(1)_N gauge model with a global L_e-L_mu-L_tau (=L') symmetry and a discrete Z_4 symmetry, it is found that the interplay between neutrinos and charged leptons contained in triplets of ψ^i=(ν^i_L, \ell^i_L, \ell^{ci}_L) (i=1,2,3) naturally leads to the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution. The model includes two (anti)sextet Higgs scalars, S^(0) with L'=0 and S^(+) with L'=2, which, respectively, couple to ψ^1ψ^{2,3} for the electron mass and masses of atmospheric neutrinos and to ψ^{2,3}ψ^{2,3} for the μ- and τ-masses and one-loop radiative neutrino masses relevant to solar neutrinos. This mechanism is realized by utilizing an additional residual discrete symmetry supplied by explicitly broken L', which guarantees the absence of tree-level neutrino mass terms of the ψ^{2,3}ψ^{2,3}-type. Pure rotation effects due to the diagonalization of neutrino and charged-lepton mass matrices are estimated to yield Δm^2_\odot/Δm^2_{atm} \leq (m_e/m_μ)^{3/2}=O(10^{-4}) but the radiative effects supersede the rotation effects to yield Δm^2_\odot/Δm^2_{atm}=O(10^{-2}) as the LMA solution.

Large Mixing Angle MSW Solution in an SU(3)_LxU(1)_N Gauge Model with Two-loop Radiative Mechanism

An SU(3)_L x U(1)_N gauge model, where E^{-i} (i=1,2,3) as heavy leptons are placed in the third member of lepton triplets, is shown to provide the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem. By introducing approximate conservation of L_e-L_mu-L_tau (\equiv L') into the model, we have estimated Δm_\odot^2 \sim \sqrt{2}εΔm_{atm}^2m_{E^1}/(m_{E^2}+m_{E^3}), where εrepresents L'-breaking effects and m_{E^i} is a mass of E^{-i}. Since Δm_{atm}^2 \sim 3 x 10^{-3} eV^2, the LMA solution is obtained for ε\sim 0.01-0.1 in the case of m_{E^1} \sim m_{E^{2,3}}. This mechanism utilizes two-loop radiative mechanism, which contains a triplet version of the singly charged Zee boson, h^+, given by ξ= (ξ^{++}, {\bar ξ}^+, h^+)^T. Almost bimaximal mixing is dynamically realized by the approximate equality between the ξ-couplings of the first family to the second and third families.

Two-loop Radiative Neutrino Mechanism in an $SU(3)_L\times U(1)_N$ Gauge Model

By using the $L_e$ - $L_μ$ - $L_τ$ symmetry, we construct an $SU(3)_L\times U(1)_N$ gauge model that provides two-loop radiative neutrino masses as well as one-loop radiative neutrino masses. The generic smallness of two-loop neutrino masses leading to $Δm^2_\odot$ compared with one-loop neutrino masses leading to $Δm^2_{atm}$ successfully explains $Δm^2_{atm}$ $>>$ $Δm^2_{\odot}$ by invoking the $L_e$ - $L_μ$ - $L_τ$ breaking. The Higgs scalar ($h^+$) that initiates radiative mechanisms is unified into a Higgs triplet together with the standard Higgs scalar ($ϕ^+$, $ϕ^0$) to form ($ϕ^+$, $ϕ^0$, $h^+$), which calls for three families of lepton triplets: ($ν^i_L$, $\ell^i_L$, $ω^i_L$) (i = 1,2,3), where $ω^i$ denote heavy neutral leptons. The two-loop radiative mechanism is found possible by introducing a singly charged scalar, which couples to $\ell^i_Rω^j_R$ (i,j = 2,3).

Radiatively Induced Neutrino Masses and Oscillations in an SU(3)_LxU(1)_N Gauge Model

We have constructed an $SU(3)_L \times U(1)_N$ gauge model utilizing an $U(1)_{L^\prime}$ symmetry, where $L^\prime$ = $L_e-L_μ-L_τ$, which accommodates tiny neutrino masses generated by $L^\prime$-conserving one-loop and $L^\prime$-breaking two-loop radiative mechanisms. The generic smallness of two-loop radiative effects compared with one-loop radiative effects describes the observed hierarchy of $Δm_{atm}^2$ $\gg$ $Δm_\odot^2$. A key ingredient for radiative mechanisms is a charged scalar ($h^+$) that couples to charged lepton-neutrino pairs and $h^+$ together with the standard Higgs scalar ($ϕ$) can be unified into a Higgs triplet as ($ϕ^0$, $ϕ^-$, $h^+$)$^T$. This assignment in turn requires lepton triplets ($ψ_L^i$) with heavy charged leptons ($κ_L^{+i}$) as the third member: $ψ_L^i=(ν^i_L,\ell^i_L,κ^{+i}_L)^T$, where $i$ ($=1,2,3$) denotes three families. It is found that our model is relevant to yield quasi-vacuum oscillations for solar neutrinos.

Neutrino Oscillations Induced by Two-loop Radiative Effects

Phenomena of neutrino oscillations are discussed on the basis of two-loop radiative neutrino mechanism. Neutrino mixings are experimentally suggested to be maximal in both atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations. By using $L_e - L_μ- L_τ$ ($\equiv L^\prime$)-conservation, which, however, only ensures the maximal solar neutrino mixing, we find that two-loop radiative mechanism dynamically generates the maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and that the estimate of $Δm^2_\odot/Δm^2_{atm} \simεm_e/m_τ$ explains $Δm^2_\odot/Δm^2_{atm} \ll 1$ because of $m_e/m_τ\ll 1$, where $ε$ measures the breaking of the $L^\prime$-conservation. Together with $Δm^2_{atm} \approx 3\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, this estimate yields $Δm^2_\odot \sim 10^{-7}$ eV$^2$ for $ε\sim 0.1$, which corresponds to the LOW solution to the solar neutrino problem. Neutrino mass scale is given by $(16π^2)^{-2} m_em_τ/M$ ($M \sim$ 1 TeV), which is of order 0.01 eV.

Fate of Chiral Symmetries in Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics

In supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics with N_c-colors and N_f-flavors of quarks, our effective superpotential provides the alternative description to the Seiberg's N=1 duality at least for N_f>=N_c+2, where spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetries leads to SU(N_c)_{L+R}xSU(N_f-N_c)_LXSU(N_f-N_c)_R as a nonabelian chiral symmetry. The anomaly-matching is ensured by the presence of Nambu-Goldstone superfields associated with this breaking and the instanton contributions are properly equipped in the effective superpotential.
