High-precision analysis of the critical point in heavy-quark QCD at $N_t=6$

Binder-cumulant analysis of the critical point in the heavy-quark region of QCD is performed by Monte-Carlo simulations with the hopping-parameter expansion at $N_t=6$. We extend our previous analysis at $N_t=4$ to finer lattices and perform high-precision analyses on large spatial volumes up to the aspect ratio $LT=N_s/N_t=18$. Higher order terms in the hopping-parameter expansion are incorporated effectively up to 14th order. The numerical results show that the violation of the finite-size scaling becomes more prominent on the finer lattice at a given aspect ratio.

Electromagnetic response of dense quark matter around color-superconducting phase transition and QCD critical point

We explore how the electric conductivity and associated relaxation time are modified near the QCD critical point and the phase transition to a color superconducting phase using the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with finite current quark masses. We give a comprehensive account of the nature of the soft modes associated with these phase transitions and how they affect the photon self-energy when the system approaches these phase transitions in a combined way with an emphasis on the common and different aspects in the two transitions. The formalism developed for describing the paraconductivity in metallic superconductors is used for the analysis of the photon self-energy. We show that the transport coefficients calculated from the self-energy show anomalous enhancements in both cases with different critical exponents for the individual transitions. We briefly discuss the possibility of detecting the enhancements in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the present and future facilities.

Efficient solver of relativistic hydrodynamics with implicit Runge-Kutta method

We propose a new method to solve the relativistic hydrodynamic equations based on implicit Runge-Kutta methods with a locally optimized fixed-point iterative solver. For numerical demonstration, we implement our idea for ideal hydrodynamics using the one-stage Gauss-Legendre method as an implicit method. The accuracy and computational cost of our new method are compared with those of explicit ones for the (1+1)-dimensional Riemann problem, as well as the (2+1)-dimensional Gubser flow and event-by-event initial conditions for heavy-ion collisions generated by TrENTo. We demonstrate that the solver converges with only one iteration in most cases, and as a result, the implicit method requires a smaller computational cost than the explicit one at the same accuracy in these cases, while it may not converge with an unrealistically large $Δt$. By showing a relationship between the one-stage Gauss-Legendre method with the iterative solver and the two-step Adams-Bashforth method, we argue that our method benefits from both the stability of the former and the efficiency of the latter.

Critical point in heavy-quark region of QCD on fine lattices

We perform a finite-size scaling analysis of the critical point in the heavy-quark region of QCD at nonzero temperature. Our previous analysis on the Binder cumulant at $N_t=4$ is extended to finer lattices with $N_t=6$ and $8$. The aspect ratio is also extended up to $15$ to suppress the non-singular contribution. High-precision analysis of the Binder cumulant is realized by an efficient Monte-Carlo simulation with the hopping-parameter expansion (HPE). Effects of higher-order terms in the HPE are incorporated by the reweighting method.

Electromagnetic probes for critical fluctuations of phase transitions in dense QCD

We study how the dilepton production rates and electric conductivity are affected by the phase transition to color superconductivity and the QCD critical point. Effects of the soft modes associated with these phase transitions are incorporated through the photon self-energy called the Aslamazov-Larkin, Maki-Thompson, and density-of-states terms, which are responsible for the paraconductivity in metallic superconductors. We show that anomalous enhancements of the production rate in the low energy/momentum region and the conductivity occur around the respective critical points.

Chemical potential dependence of the endpoint of first-order phase transition in heavy-quark region of finite-temperature lattice QCD

We determine the location of the critical point where the first-order deconfining transition in the heavy-quark region turns into a crossover in finite-temperature and density lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of Wilson quarks. Combining a hopping parameter expansion (HPE) of the quark determinant with a reweighting method, we evaluate the chemical potential dependence of the critical point. By systematically calculating the coefficients of the hopping parameter expansion up to a high order of HPE at finite chemical potential, we find that the higher order terms are strongly correlated with the Polyakov loop, which is the leading-order term, on each configuration. Moreover, their complex phases themselves, which are important at finite density, are also found to be strongly correlated with the complex phase of the Polyakov loop. Using this property, we develop a method for estimating the critical point incorporating high-order terms from calculations with only low-order terms. We report that the first-order phase transition region in the heavy-quark region becomes narrower exponentially with increasing the chemical potential. Since the hopping parameter of the critical point decreases exponentially as the density increases, the sign problem does not become serious even when the density increases, and critical points can be evaluated up to high densities.

Gravitational form factors of a kink in $1+1$ dimensional $ϕ^4$ model

We calculate the one-loop correction to the distribution of energy-momentum tensor around a kink in $1+1$ dimensional $ϕ^4$ model. We employ the collective coordinate method to eliminate the zero mode that gives rise to infrared divergence. The ultraviolet divergences are removed by vacuum subtraction and mass renormalization. We obtain an analytic result that is finite and satisfies the momentum conservation. The total energy of the kink obtained from the spatial integral of energy density reproduces the known result. Our result obtained on a finite space has a spatially-uniform term that is inversely proportional to the spatial length.

Enhancement of dilepton production rate and electric conductivity around QCD critical point

We investigate whether the soft mode that becomes massless at the QCD critical point (CP) causes an enhancement of the dilepton production rate (DPR) and the electric conductivity around the CP through the modification of the photon self-energy. The modification is described by the so-called Aslamazov-Larkin, Maki-Thompson and density of states terms, which have been taken into account in our previous study on the DPR near the color-superconducting phase transition, with a replacement of the diquark modes with the soft mode of the QCD CP. We show that the coupling of photons with the soft modes brings about an enhancement of the DPR in the low invariant-mass region and the conductivity near the CP, which would be observable in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Phase structure and critical point in heavy-quark QCD at finite temperature

We study phase structure and critical point of finite-temperature QCD in the heavy-quark region applying the hopping parameter expansion (HPE). We first study finite-size scaling on the critical point on $N_t=4$ lattices with large spatial volumes taking the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) effects of the HPE, and find that the critical scaling of the Z(2) universality class expected around the critical point of two-flavor QCD is realized when the aspect ratio of the lattice is larger than about 9. This enables us to determine the critical point in the thermodynamic limit with high precisions. By a study of the convergence of the HPE, we confirm that the result of the critical point with the LO (NLO) approximation of the HPE is fairly accurate for $N_t=4$ (6), while we need to incorporate higher order effects for larger $N_t$. To extend the study to large $N_t$ lattices, we then develop a method to take the effects of higher-order terms of the HPE up to a sufficiently high order. We report on the status of our study on $N_t = 6$ lattice adopting the new method.

Effective model for pure Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$ with Polyakov loops

We investigate the phase diagram and thermodynamics of $SU(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theory on a manifold $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$ with an effective model that includes two Polyakov loops along two compactified directions. We find that a rich phase structure can appear owing to the spontaneous breaking of two center symmetries for $N=2$ and $3$. Thermodynamic quantities are obtained in the model and compared with recent lattice results. It is shown that two Polyakov loops play significant roles in thermodynamics on $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$.

Anomalous enhancement of dilepton production due to soft modes in dense quark matter

We explore how the dilepton production rate is modified near the critical temperature of color superconductivity and QCD critical point by the soft modes inherently associated with the phase transitions of second-order. It is shown that the soft modes affect the photon self-energy significantly through so called the Aslamasov-Larkin, Maki-Thompson and density of states terms, which are known responsible for the paraconductivity in the metalic superconductivity, and cause an anomalous enhancement of the production rate in the low energy/momentum region.

From lattice to observables: Real and virtual experiments for exploring hot and dense QCD

Relativistic heavy-ion collisions and the lattice QCD Monte-Carlo simulations are important ``experimental'' tools for investigating the properties of the medium described by QCD under extreme conditions. After briefly examining their characteristics, I pick up the study of the critical points in QCD as an example of the research subjects that these two tools play complementary roles and discuss recent topics that have been achieved with the use of each tool.

Critical net-baryon fluctuations in an expanding system

In this work we study the consequences of a longitudinal Bjorken expansion and a Hubble-like temperature cooling scenario on a 1+1D non-linear model of the diffusive dynamics of fluctuations in the net-baryon density. The equilibrium behavior of the fluctuations is fully encoded in the temperature dependence of the susceptibilities on the crossover side both in the vicinity of the assumed location of the critical point and at vanishing baryo-chemical potential in-line with lattice QCD calculations. We demonstrate the great sensitivity of the fluctuation observables on the dynamics, in particular on the diffusion length and the freeze-out conditions. While the critical signals are visible and the critical region is broadened by the expansion, a too small diffusion length can strongly reduce the amplitude of the signals. We propose to search for significant anti-correlations of baryons at intermediate rapidity experimentally and to map out the rapidity dependence of the fourth-order cumulant, which in the presence of a critical point (and only in its presence) has a pronounced minimum at intermediate rapidities.

Ratio of baryon and electric-charge cumulants at second order with acceptance corrections

We evaluate the ratio of baryon and electric-charge cumulants at second order from the recent experimental results at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV by the STAR Collaboration. The baryon number cumulant is reconstructed from the proton number distribution, and effects of the finite acceptance on the transverse momentum are corrected assuming the independent particle emission. We show that the obtained ratio has a dependence on the rapidity window. Comparison of the result with the hadron resonance gas model and lattice QCD numerical simulations suggests that if the fluctuations are generated from a thermal medium its temperature is significantly lower than the chemical freezeout temperature.

Scope and convergence of the hopping parameter expansion in finite temperature QCD with heavy quarks around the critical point

Hopping parameter expansion is a useful tool to investigate heavy dynamical quarks in lattice QCD, while the range of its applicability has been sometimes questioned. We study the convergence and the valid range of the hopping parameter expansion in the determination of the critical point (critical quark mass) of QCD with heavy quarks at finite temperature and density. On lattices with sufficiently large spatial extent, the terms in the hopping parameter expansion are classified into Wilson loop terms and Polyakov-type loop terms. We first study the case of the worst convergence in which all the gauge link variables are unit matrices and thus the Wilson loops and the Polyakov-type loops get their maximum values. We perform explicit calculation up to more than 100th order of the hopping parameter expansion. We show that the hopping parameter expansion is convergent up to the chiral limit of free Wilson quarks. We then perform a Monte-Carlo simulation to measure correlation among Polyakov-type loop terms up to the 20th order of the hopping parameter expansion. In previous studies, strong correlation between the leading order Polyakov loop term and the next-to-leading order bent Polyakov loop terms was reported and used to construct an effective theory to incorporate the next-to-leading order effect by a shift of the leading order coupling parameter. We establish that the strong correlation among Polyakov-type loop terms holds also at higher orders of the hopping parameter expansion, and extend the effective theory to incorporate higher-order effects up to high orders. Using the effective theory, we study the truncation error of the hopping parameter expansion. We find that the previous next-to-leading order result of the critical point for $N_t=4$ are well reliable. For $N_t \ge 6$, we need to incorporate higher-order effects in the effective theory.

Anomalous enhancement of dilepton production as a precursor of color superconductivity

We compute the modification of the photon self-energy due to dynamical diquark fluctuations developed near the critical temperature of the color superconductivity through the Aslamasov-Larkin, Maki-Thompson and density of states terms, which are responsible for the paraconductivity in metals at vanishing energy and momentum. It is shown that the rate has a significant enhancement at low invariant-mass region over a rather wide range of temperature in the normal phase. This enhancement is worth exploration in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions, which may thereby reveal the significance of the diquark fluctuations in dense quark matter.

Finite-size scaling around the critical point in the heavy quark region of QCD

Finite-size scaling is investigated in detail around the critical point in the heavy-quark region of nonzero temperature QCD. Numerical simulations are performed with large spatial volumes up to the aspect ratio $N_s/N_t=12$ at a fixed lattice spacing with $N_t=4$. We show that the Binder cumulant and the distribution function of the Polyakov loop follow the finite-size scaling in the $Z(2)$ universality class for large spatial volumes with $N_s/N_t \ge 9$, while, for $N_s/N_t \le 8$, the Binder cumulant becomes inconsistent with the $Z(2)$ scaling. To realize the large-volume simulations in the heavy-quark region, we adopt the hopping parameter expansion for the quark determinant: We generate gauge configurations using the leading order action including the Polyakov loop term for $N_t=4$, and incorporate the next-to-leading order effects in the measurements by the multipoint reweighting method. We find that the use of the leading-order configurations is crucially effective in suppressing the overlapping problem in the reweighting and thus reducing the statistical errors.

Single static-quark system above $T_c$ investigated by energy-momentum tensor in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the distribution of energy-momentum tensor (EMT) around a static quark in the deconfined phase of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The EMT defined through the gradient-flow formalism is used for the numerical analysis of the EMT distribution around the Polyakov loop with the continuum extrapolation. Using EMT, one can study the mechanical distortion of the color gauge field induced by the static charge. We find substantial separation in the absolute values of the EMT eigenvalues which is not observed in Maxwell theory. The separation grows as temperature is lowered toward the critical temperature. The lattice data also indicate the thermal screening at long distance and the perturbative behavior at short distance.
