Spectral Properties of Quarks in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We analyze the spectral properties of the quark propagator above the critical temperature for the deconfinement phase transition in quenched lattice QCD using clover improved Wilson fermions. The bare quark mass dependence of the quark spectral function is analyzed by varying the hopping parameter κin Landau gauge. We assume a two-pole structure for the quark spectral function, which is numerically found to work quite well for any value of κ. It is shown that in the chiral limit the quark spectral function has two collective modes that correspond to the normal and plasmino excitations, while it is dominated by a single-pole structure when the bare quark mass becomes large.

Bound diquarks and their Bose-Einstein condensation in strongly coupled quark matter

We explore the formation of diquark molecules and their Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter at nonzero temperature, T, and quark chemical potential, mu. Using a quark model with a four-fermion interaction, we identify possible diquark excitations as poles of the microscopically computed diquark propagator. The quark masses are obtained by solving a dynamical equation for the chiral condensate and are found to determine the stability of the diquark excitations. The stability of diquark excitations is investigated in the T-mu plane for different values of the diquark coupling strength. We find that bound diquark molecules appear at small quark chemical potentials at intermediate coupling and that BEC of non-strange diquark molecules occurs if the attractive interaction between quarks is sufficiently strong.

Bose-Einstein condensation of diquark molecules in three-flavor quark matter

We study the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter with three quark flavors at low and intermediate densities and non-zero temperatures in the framework of an NJL-type model with four-point interactions. At large densities, when the interactions are weak due to asymptotic freedom, quarks form loosely bound Cooper pairs. However, when the density decreases, interactions become stronger and quark Cooper pairs transform smoothly into tightly bound diquark molecules. We find that such molecules are stable at low density and temperature and that they dissociate above a temperature $T_{\rm diss}$ of the order of the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c \sim 170$ MeV. We also explore the conditions under which these molecules undergo Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). We find that BEC is only possible if we increase the attractive interaction in the diquark channel to (probably unrealistically) large values.

Fluctuations of the chiral condensate and quasi-particle spectra near phase transition

We investigate the quark spectrum near but above the critical temperature of the chiral transition, taking into account the precursory soft modes. It is found that there appear novel excitation spectra of quasi-quarks and quasi-antiquarks with a three-peak structure. By a detailed analysis on the formation of the three-peak structure using Yukawa models, it is shown that the new quark spectra originate from the mixing between a quark (anti-quark) and an antiquark hole (quark hole) caused by a resonant scattering of the quasi-quark with the soft modes which have a small but finite excitation energy with a small width near the critical temperature.

Chiral transition and mesonic excitations for quarks with thermal masses

We study the effect of a thermal quark mass, m_T, on the chiral phase transition and mesonic excitations in the light quark sector at finite temperature in a simple chirally-symmetric model. We show that while nonzero m_T lowers the chiral condensate, the chiral transition remains of second order. It is argued that the mesonic excitations have large decay rate at energies below 2m_T, owing to the Landau damping of the quarks and the van Hove singularities of the collective modes.

Further Analysis of Excitations of Quarks at Finite Temperature -- Mass Effect and Pole Structure --

We calculate the spectral function of the massive quark at finite temperature (T) using a Yukawa model and show that the peak in the negative energy region among the three-peaks found in a previous work for the massless quark is largely suppressed. To explore the underlying mechanism of this behavior, we also investigate the pole structure of the retarded Green function of the quark. We will show the result only for the massless quark. We find the residues of the poles corresponding the three-peaks are all comparable at $T\sim m_b$. We also show that the multi-peak structure of the quark spectra is well described in the pole approximation which indicates that the quasi-paricle picture is valid in this $T$ region.

Fermionic Collective Modes in QGP near Critical Temperatures

We investigate the quark spectrum in the quark-gluon plasma phase near color superconducting (CS) and chiral phase transitions. Owing to the precursory soft modes of the phase transitions, there appear novel excitaion spectra: In the CS transition, the quark matter shows non-Fermi liquid behavior and leads to the pseudogap in the density of states of quarks. In the chiral transition, three collective excitations appear in the quark spectrum.

Spectrum of soft mode with thermal mass of quarks above critical temperature

We study effects of a thermal-quark mass and Landau damping of quarks on the chiral phase transition and its soft modes at finite temperature. For this purpose we employ a simple model with the quark propagator obtained in the hard thermal loop approximation. We show that the chiral phase transition is second order even if quark have a finite thermal mass, and the thermal mass suppresses the chiral condensate. We argue that mesonic spectra have a large width due to scattering between gluons and quarks, and the van Hove singularity at threshold.

Novel Collective Excitations and the Quasi-Particle Picture of Quarks Coupled with a Massive Boson at Finite Temperature

Motivated by the observation that there may exist hadronic excitations even in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase, we investigate how the properties of quarks, especially within the quasi-particle picture, are affected by the coupling with bosonic excitations at finite temperature (T), employing Yukawa models with a massive scalar (pseudoscalar) and vector (axial-vector) boson of mass m. The quark spectral function and the quasi-dispersion relations are calculated at one-loop order. We find that there appears a three-peak structure in the quark spectral function with a collective nature when T is comparable with m, irrespective of the type of boson considered. Such a multi-peak structure was first found in a chiral model yielding scalar composite bosons with a decay width. We elucidate the mechanism through which the new quark collective excitations are realized in terms of the Landau damping of a quark (an antiquark) induced by scattering with the thermally excited boson, which gives rise to mixing and hence a level repulsion between a quark (antiquark) and an antiquark-hole (quark-hole) in the thermally excited antiquark (quark) distribution. Our results suggest that the quarks in the QGP phase can be described within an interesting quasi-particle picture with a multi-peak spectral function. Because the models employed here are rather generic, our findings may represent a universal phenomenon for fermions coupled to a massive bosonic excitation with a vanishing or small width. The relevance of these results to other fields of physics, such as neutrino physics, is also briefly discussed. In addition, we describe a new aspect of the plasmino excitation obtained in the hard-thermal loop approximation.

Quasiparticle picture of quarks near chiral transition at finite temperature

We investigate, using a chiral effective model, the quark spectrum in the critical region of the chiral transition focusing on the effect of the possible mesonic excitations in the quark-gluon plasma phase. We find that there appears a novel three-peak structure in the quark spectra. We elucidate the mechanism of the appearance of the multi-peak structure with the help of a Yukawa model with an elementary boson.

Stable gapless superconductivity at strong coupling

We study cross-flavor Cooper pairing in a relativistic system of two fermion species with mismatched Fermi surfaces. We find that there exist gapless phases which are characterized by either one or two gapless nodes in the energy spectra of their quasiparticles. An analysis of the current-current correlator reveals that, at strong coupling, both of these gapless phases can be free of magnetic instabilities and thus are stable. This is in contrast to the weak-coupling case where there are always two gapless nodes and the phase becomes magnetically unstable.

Quark Spectrum above but near Critical Temperature of Chiral Transition

We explore the quark properties at finite temperature near but above the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition. We investigate the effects of the precursory soft mode of the phase transition on the quark dispersion relation and the spectral function. It is found that there appear novel excitation spectra of quasi-quarks and quasi-antiquarks with a three-peak structure, which are not attributed to the hard-thermal-loop approximation. We show that the new spectra originate from the mixing between a quark (anti-quark) and an anti-quark hole (quark hole) caused by a ``resonant scattering'' of the quasi-fermions with the thermally-excited soft mode which has a small but finite excitation energy.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior Induced by Resonant Diquark-pair Scattering in Heated Quark Matter

We show how the quasiparticle picture of quarks changes near but above the critical temperature T_c of the color-superconducting phase transition in the heated quark matter. We demonstrate that a non-Fermi liquid behavior of the matter develops drastically when the diquark coupling constant is increased owing to the coupling of the quark with the pairing soft mode: We clarify that the depression and eventually the appearance of a gap structure in the spectral function as well as the anomalous quark dispersion relation of the quark can be understood in terms of the resonant scattering between the incident quark and a particle near the Fermi surface to make the pairing soft mode.

Quasiparticle Picture of Quarks near Chiral Phase Transition

We study how the quasiparticle picture of the quark can be modified near but above the critical tempearture (Tc) of the chiral phase transition; we incorporate into the quark self-energy the effects of the precursory soft modes of the phase transition, i.e., `para-σ(π) meson'. It is found that the quark spectrum has a three-peak structure near Tc: We show that the additional new spectra originate from the mixing between a quark (anti-quark) and an anti-quark hole (quark hole) caused by a ``resonant scattering'' of the quasi-fermions with the thermally-excited soft modes.

Pre-critical Phenomena of Two-flavor Color Superconductivity in Heated Quark Matter -- diquark-pair fluctuations and non-Fermi liquid behavior --

We investigate the fluctuations of the diquark-pair field and their effects on observables above the critical temperature $T_c$ in two-flavor color superconductivity (CSC) at moderate density using a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-type effective model of QCD. Because of the strong-coupling nature of the dynamics, the fluctuations of the pair field develop a collective mode, which has a prominent strength even well above T_c. We show that the collective mode is actually the soft mode of CSC. We examine the effects of the pair fluctuations on the specific heat and the quark spectrum for T above but close to T_c. We find that the specific heat exhibits singular behavior because of the pair fluctuations, in accordance with the general theory of second-order phase transitions. The quarks display a typical non-Fermi liquid behavior, owing to the coupling with the soft mode, leading to a pseudo-gap in the density of states of the quarks in the vicinity of the critical point. Some experimental implications of the precursory phenomena are also discussed.

Quark Spectrum near Chiral Transition Points

Near the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition, a collective excitation due to fluctuation of the chiral order parameter appears. We investigate how it affects the quark spectrum near but above the critical temperature. The calculated spectral function has many peaks. We show this behavior can be understood in terms of resonance scatterings of a quark off the collective mode.

Pseudogap of Color Superconductivity

We show that the pseudogap of the quark density of states is formed in hot quark matter as a precursory phenomenon of the color superconductivity on the basis of a low-energy effective theory. We clarify that the soft mode of the di-quark pair field gives rise to a peculiar behavior of the quark dispersion relation and a short life-time of the quasiparticles near the Fermi surface, both of which make a depression of the density of states of quarks. Our result suggests that the appearance of the pseudogap is a universal phenomenon of strong coupling superconductors, irrespective of the dimensionality.
