Universal Time Evolution of Holographic and Quantum Complexity

Holographic complexity, as the bulk dual of quantum complexity, encodes the geometric structure of black hole interiors. Motivated by the complexity=anything proposal, we introduce the spectral representation for generating functions associated with codimension-one and codimension-zero holographic complexity measures. These generating functions exhibit a universal slope-ramp-plateau structure, analogous to the spectral form factor in chaotic quantum systems. In such systems, quantum complexity evolves universally, displaying long-time linear growth followed by saturation at late times. By employing the generating function formalism, we demonstrate that this universal behavior originates from random matrix universality in spectral statistics and from a particular pole structure of the matrix elements of the generating functions in the energy eigenbasis. Using the residue theorem, we prove that the existence of this pole structure is both a necessary and sufficient condition for the linear growth of complexity measures. Furthermore, we show that the late-time saturation plateau arises directly from the spectral level repulsion, a hallmark of quantum chaos.

Finite $N$ Bulk Hilbert Space in ETH Matrix Model for double-scaled SYK

We extend the notion of chord number in the strict large $N$ double-scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (DSSYK) model to the corresponding finite $N$ ETH matrix model. The chord number in the strict large $N$ DSSYK model is known to correspond to the discrete length of the Einstein-Rosen bridge in the gravity dual, which reduces to the renormalized geodesic length in JT gravity at weak coupling. At finite $N$, these chord number states form an over-complete basis of the non-perturbative Hilbert space, as the structure of the inner product gets significantly modified due to the Cayley-Hamilton theorem: There are infinitely many null states. In this paper, by considering ``EFT for gravitational observables'' or a version of ``non-isometric code'', we construct a family of chord number operators at finite $N$. While the constructed chord number operator depends on the reference chord number state, it realizes approximate $q$-deformed oscillator algebra and reproduces semiclassical bulk geometry around the reference state. As a special case, we will show that when the reference is chosen to be the chord number zero state, the chord number operator precisely matches with the Krylov state complexity, leading to the ``ramp-slope-plateau'' behavior at late times, implying the formation of ``grey hole''.

Non-perturbative Overlaps in JT Gravity: From Spectral Form Factor to Generating Functions of Complexity

The interplay between black hole interior dynamics and quantum chaos provides a crucial framework for probing quantum effects in quantum gravity. In this work, we investigate non-perturbative overlaps in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity to uncover universal signatures of quantum chaos and quantum complexity. Taking advantage of universal spectral correlators from random matrix theory, we compute the overlaps between the thermofield double (TFD) state and two distinct classes of states: fixed-length states, which encode maximal volume slices, and time-shifted TFD states. The squared overlaps naturally define probability distributions that quantify the expectation values of gravitational observables. Central to our results is the introduction of generating functions for quantum complexity measures, such as $\langle e^{-α\ell} \rangle$. The time evolution of these generating functions exhibits the universal slope-ramp-plateau structure, mirroring the behavior of the spectral form factor (SFF). Using generating functions, we further demonstrate that the universal time evolution of complexity for chaotic systems, which is characterized by a linear growth followed by a late-time plateau, arises from the disappearance of the linear ramp as the regularization parameter $α$ decreases. With regard to the time-shifted TFD state, we derive a surprising result: the expectation value of the time shift, which classically grows linearly, vanishes when non-perturbative quantum corrections are incorporated. This cancellation highlights a fundamental distinction between semiclassical and quantum gravitational descriptions of the black hole interior. All our findings establish generating functions as powerful probes of quantum complexity and chaos in gravitational and quantum systems.

Non-perturbative Discrete Spectrum of Interior Length and Timeshift in Two-sided Black Hole

We study the spectrum of the interior length and the horizon timeshift of a two-sided black hole by constructing non-perturbative length and timeshift operators in Jackiew-Teitelboim gravity. We first construct projection operators onto the fixed length or fixed horizon timeshift subspaces using the replica trick. We calculate the densities of state for the length and the timeshift, which are found to be finite. This finiteness implies the discreteness in the spectrum of these quantities. We then construct the non-perturbative length and timeshift operators, and apply them to study the time evolution of the two-sided black hole. We find that at early time, the probability distribution of the interior length and the timeshift are sharply peaked at the classical values, while after the Heisenberg time, the distribution is completely uniform over all possible values of the length and the timeshift, indicating maximal uncertainty. In particular, the probability of having the negative timeshift states, which corresponds to the white hole probability, is $O(1)$ after the Heisenberg time.

Fluctuation in the Fidelity of Information Recovery from Hawking Radiation

The interior of a pure-state black hole is known to be reconstructed from the Petz map by collecting a sufficiently large amount of the emitted Hawking radiation. This was established based on the Euclidean replica wormhole, which comes from an ensemble averaging over gravitational theories. On the other hand, this means that the Page curve and the interior reconstruction are both ensemble averages; thus, there is a possibility of large errors. In the previous study [Bousso, Miyaji (2023)], it was shown that the entropy of the Hawking radiation has fluctuation of order $e^{-S_{\mathbf{BH}}}$, thus is typical in the ensemble. In the present article, we show that the fluctuations of the relative entropy difference in the encoding map and the entanglement fidelity of the Petz map are both suppressed by $e^{-S_{\mathbf{BH}}}$ compared to the signals, establishing the typicality in the ensemble. In addition, we also compute the entanglement loss of the encoding map.

Fluctuations in the Entropy of Hawking Radiation

We use the gravitational path integral (GPI) to compute the fluctuations of the Hawking radiation entropy around the Page curve, in a two-dimensional model introduced by Penington \emph{et al}. Before the Page time, we find that $δS = e^{-S}/\sqrt{2}$, where $S$ is the black hole entropy. This result agrees with the Haar-averaged entropy fluctuations of a bipartite system, which we also compute at leading order. After the Page time, we find that $δS \sim e^{-S}$, up to a prefactor that depends logarithmically on the width of the microcanonical energy window. This is not symmetric under exchange of subsystem sizes and so does not agree with the Haar average for a subsystem of fixed Hilbert space dimension. The discrepancy can be attributed to the fact that the black hole Hilbert space dimension is not fixed by the state preparation: even in a microcanonical ensemble with a top-hat smearing function, the GPI yields an additive fluctuation in the number of black hole states. This result, and the fact that the Page curve computed by the GPI is smooth, all point towards an ensemble interpretation of the GPI.

Holographic BCFT with a Defect on the End-of-the-World Brane

In this paper, we propose a new gravity dual for a $2$d BCFT with two conformal boundaries by introducing a defect that connects the two End-of-the-World branes. We demonstrate that the BCFT dual to this bulk model exhibits a richer lowest spectrum. The corresponding lowest energy eigenvalue can continuously interpolate between $-\frac{πc}{24Δx}$ and $0$ where $Δx$ is the distance between the boundaries. This range was inaccessible to the conventional AdS/BCFT model with distinct boundary conditions. We compute the holographic entanglement entropy and find that it exhibits three different phases, one of which breaks the time reflection symmetry. We also construct a wormhole saddle, analogous to a $3$d replica wormhole, which connects different boundaries through the AdS bulk. This saddle is present only if the BCFT is non-unitary and is always subdominant compared to the disconnected saddle.

Island for Gravitationally Prepared State and Pseudo Entanglement Wedge

We consider spacetime initiated by a finite-sized initial boundary as a generalization of the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary state. We study entanglement entropy of matter state prepared by such spacetime. We find that the entanglement entropy for large subregion is given either by the initial state entanglement or the entanglement island, preventing the entropy to grow arbitrarily large. Consequently, the entanglement entropy is always bounded from above by the boundary area of the island, leading to an entropy bound in terms of the island. The island $I$ is located in the analytically continued spacetime, either at the bra or the ket part of the spacetime in Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. The entanglement entropy is given by an average of $complex$ pseudo generalized entropy for each entanglement island. We find a necessary condition of the initial state to be consistent with the strong sub-additivity, which requires that any probe degrees of freedom are thermally entangled with the rest of the system. We then find a large parameter region where the spacetime with finite-sized initial boundary, which does not have the factorization puzzle at leading order, dominates over the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary state or the bra-ket wormhole. Due to the absence of a moment of time reflection symmetry, the island in our setup is a generalization of the entanglement wedge, called pseudo entanglement wedge. In pseudo entanglement wedge reconstruction, we consider reconstructing the bulk matter transition matrix on $A\cup I$, from a fine-grained state on $A$. The bulk transition matrix is given by a thermofield double state with a projection by the initial state. We also provide an AdS/BCFT model by considering EOW branes with corners. We also find the exponential hardness of such reconstruction task using a generalization of Python's lunch conjecture to pseudo generalized entropy.

Spectrum of End of the World Branes in Holographic BCFTs

We study overlaps between two regularized boundary states in conformal field theories. Regularized boundary states are dual to end of the world branes in an AdS black hole via the AdS/BCFT. Thus they can be regarded as microstates of a single sided black hole. Owing to the open-closed duality, such an overlap between two different regularized boundary states is exponentially suppressed as $\langle ψ_{a} | ψ_{b} \rangle \sim e^{-O(h^{(min)}_{ab})}$, where $h^{(min)}_{ab}$ is the lowest energy of open strings which connect two different boundaries $a$ and $b$. Our gravity dual analysis leads to $h^{(min)}_{ab} = c/24$ for a pure AdS$_3$ gravity. This shows that a holographic boundary state is a random vector among all left-right symmetric states, whose number is given by a square root of the number of all black hole microstates. We also perform a similar computation in higher dimensions, and find that $h^{( min)}_{ab}$ depends on the tensions of the branes. In our analysis of holographic boundary states, the off diagonal elements of the inner products can be computed directly from on-shell gravity actions, as opposed to earlier calculations of inner products of microstates in two dimensional gravity.

Islands for Reflected Entropy

Recent work has demonstrated the need to include contributions from entanglement islands when computing the entanglement entropy in QFT states coupled to regions of semiclassical gravity. We propose a new formula for the reflected entropy that includes additional contributions from such islands. We derive this formula from the gravitational path integral by finding additional saddles that include generalized replica wormholes. We also demonstrate that our covariant formula satisfies all the inequalities required of the reflected entropy. We use this formula in various examples that demonstrate its relevance in illustrating the structure of multipartite entanglement that are invisible to the entropies.

Entanglement Entropy, OTOC and Bootstrap in 2D CFTs from Regge and Light Cone Limits of Multi-point Conformal Block

We explore the structures of light cone and Regge limit singularities of $n$-point Virasoro conformal blocks in $c>1$ two-dimensional conformal field theories with no chiral primaries, using fusion matrix approach. These CFTs include not only holographic CFTs dual to classical gravity, but also their full quantum corrections, since this approach allows us to explore full $1/c$ corrections. As the important applications, we study time dependence of Renyi entropy after a local quench and out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC) at late time. We first show that, the $n$-th ($n>2$) Renyi entropy after a local quench in our CFT grows logarithmically at late time, for any $c$ and any conformal dimensions of excited primary. In particular, we find that this behavior is independent of $c$, contrary to the expectation that the finite $c$ correction fixes the late time Renyi entropy to be constant. We also show that the constant part of the late time Renyi entropy is given by a monodromy matrix. We also investigate OTOCs by using the monodromy matrix. We first rewrite the monodromy matrix in terms of fusion matrix explicitly. By this expression, we find that the OTOC decays exponentially in time, and the decay rates are divided into three patterns, depending on the dimensions of external operators. We note that our result is valid for any $c>1$ and any external operator dimensions. Our monodromy matrix approach can be generalized to the Liouville theory and we show that the Liouville OTOC approaches constant in the late time regime. We emphasize that, there is a number of other applications of the fusion and the monodromy matrix approaches, such as solving the conformal bootstrap equation. Therefore, it is tempting to believe that the fusion and monodromy matrix approaches provide a key to understanding the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Entanglement Entropy after Double-Excitation as Interaction Measure

We study entanglement entropy after a double local quench in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), with any central charge $c>1$. In the holographic CFT, such a state with double-excitation is dual to an AdS space with two massive particles introduced from the boundary. We show that the growth after the double local excitations cannot be given by the sum of two local quenches but with an additional negative term. This negative contribution can be naturally interpreted as due to the attractive force of gravity. In CFT side, this evaluation of the entanglement entropy is accomplished by a special limit of 6-point functions, where we employed the fusion matrix approach for multi-point conformal blocks developed in arXiv:1905.02191.

Holographic Entanglement of Purification from Conformal Field Theories

We explore a conformal field theoretic interpretation of the holographic entanglement of purification, which is defined as the minimal area of entanglement wedge cross section. We argue that in AdS3/CFT2, the holographic entanglement of purification agrees with the entanglement entropy for a purified state, obtained from a special Weyl transformation, called path-integral optimizations. By definition, this special purified state has the minimal path-integral complexity. We confirm this claim in several examples.

Time Evolution after Double Trace Deformation

In this paper, we consider double trace deformation to single CFT${}_2$, and study time evolution after the deformation. The double trace deformation we consider is nonlocal: composed of two local operators placed at separate points. We study two types of local operators: one is usual local operator in CFT, and the other is HKLL bulk local operator, which is still operator in CFT but has properties as bulk local operator. We compute null energy and averaged null energy in the bulk in both types of deformations. We confirmed that, with the suitable choice of couplings, averaged null energies are negative. This implies causal structure is modified in the bulk, from classical background. We then calculate time evolution of entanglement entropy and entanglement Renyi entropy after double trace deformation. We find both quantities are found to show peculiar shockwave-like time evolution.

Path-Integral Complexity for Perturbed CFTs

In this work, we formulate a path-integral optimization for two dimensional conformal field theories perturbed by relevant operators. We present several evidences how this optimization mechanism works, based on calculations in free field theories as well as general arguments of RG flows in field theories. Our optimization is performed by minimizing the path-integral complexity functional that depends on the metric and also on the relevant couplings. Then, we compute the optimal metric perturbatively and find that it agrees with the time slice of the hyperbolic metric perturbed by a scalar field in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Last but not the least, we estimate contributions to complexity from relevant perturbations.

Anti-de Sitter Space from Optimization of Path Integrals in Conformal Field Theories

We introduce a new optimization procedure for Euclidean path integrals which compute wave functionals in conformal field theories (CFTs). We optimize the background metric in the space on which the path integration is performed. Equivalently this is interpreted as a position-dependent UV cutoff. For two-dimensional CFT vacua, we find the optimized metric is given by that of a hyperbolic space and we interpret this as a continuous limit of the conjectured relation between tensor networks and Anti--de Sitter (AdS)/conformal field theory (CFT) correspondence. We confirm our procedure for excited states, the thermofield double state, the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and discuss its extension to higher-dimensional CFTs. We also show that when applied to reduced density matrices, it reproduces entanglement wedges and holographic entanglement entropy. We suggest that our optimization prescription is analogous to the estimation of computational complexity.

Liouville Action as Path-Integral Complexity: From Continuous Tensor Networks to AdS/CFT

We propose an optimization procedure for Euclidean path-integrals that evaluate CFT wave functionals in arbitrary dimensions. The optimization is performed by minimizing certain functional, which can be interpreted as a measure of computational complexity, with respect to background metrics for the path-integrals. In two dimensional CFTs, this functional is given by the Liouville action. We also formulate the optimization for higher dimensional CFTs and, in various examples, find that the optimized hyperbolic metrics coincide with the time slices of expected gravity duals. Moreover, if we optimize a reduced density matrix, the geometry becomes two copies of the entanglement wedge and reproduces the holographic entanglement entropy. Our approach resembles a continuous tensor network renormalization and provides a concrete realization of the proposed interpretation of AdS/CFT as tensor networks. The present paper is an extended version of our earlier report arXiv:1703.00456 and includes many new results such as evaluations of complexity functionals, energy stress tensor, higher dimensional extensions and time evolutions of thermofield double states.

From Path Integrals to Tensor Networks for AdS/CFT

In this paper, we discuss tensor network descriptions of AdS/CFT from two different viewpoints. First, we start with an Euclidean path-integral computation of ground state wave functions with a UV cut off. We consider its efficient optimization by making its UV cut off position dependent and define a quantum state at each length scale. We conjecture that this path-integral corresponds to a time slice of AdS. Next, we derive a flow of quantum states by rewriting the action of Killing vectors of AdS3 in terms of the dual 2d CFT. Both approaches support a correspondence between the hyperbolic time slice H2 in AdS3 and a version of continuous MERA (cMERA). We also give a heuristic argument why we can expect a sub-AdS scale bulk locality for holographic CFTs.
