Holographic description of quantum black hole on a computer

The discovery of the fact that black holes radiate particles and eventually evaporate led Hawking to pose the well-known information loss paradox. This paradox caused a long and serious debate since it claims that the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics may be violated. A possible cure appeared recently from superstring theory, a consistent theory of quantum gravity: if the holographic description of a quantum black hole based on the gauge/gravity duality is correct, the information is not lost and quantum mechanics remains valid. Here we test this gauge/gravity duality on a computer at the level of quantum gravity for the first time. The black hole mass obtained by Monte Carlo simulation of the dual gauge theory reproduces precisely the quantum gravity effects in an evaporating black hole. This result opens up totally new perspectives towards quantum gravity since one can simulate quantum black holes through dual gauge theories.

A new look at instantons and large-N limit

We analyze instantons in the very strongly coupled large-$N$ limit ($N\to\infty$ with $g^2$ fixed) of large-$N$ gauge theories, where the effect of the instantons remains finite. By using the exact partition function of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2^*$ gauge theories as a concrete example, we demonstrate that each instanton sector in the very strongly coupled large-$N$ limit is related to the one in the 't Hooft limit ($N\to\infty$ with $g^2N$ fixed) through a simple analytic continuation. Furthermore we show the equivalence between the instanton partition functions of a pair of large-$N$ gauge theories related by an orbifold projection. This can open up a new way to analyze the partition functions of low/non-supersymmetric theories. We also discuss implication of our result to gauge/gravity dualities for M-theory as well as a possible application to large-$N$ QCD.

From the planar limit to M-theory

The large-N limit of gauge theories has been playing a crucial role in theoretical physics over the decades. Despite its importance, little is known outside the planar limit where the 't Hooft coupling $λ=g_{YM}^2N$ is fixed. In this Letter we consider more general large-N limit --- $λ$ grows with N, e.g., $g_{YM}^2$ is fixed. Such a limit is important particularly in recent attempts to find the nonpertubative formulation of M-theory. Based on various supporting evidence, we propose this limit is essentially identical to the planar limit, in the sense the order of the large-N limit and the strong coupling limit commute. For a wide class of large-N gauge theories, these two limits are smoothly connected, and the analytic continuation from the planar limit is justified. As simple examples, we reproduce a few properties of the six-dimensional N=(2, 0) theory on S^1 from the five-dimensional maximal super Yang-Mills theory, supporting the recent conjecture by Douglas and Lambert et al. that these two theories are identical.

Large-$N_c$ gauge theory and chiral random matrix theory

We discuss how the $1/N_c$ expansion and the chiral random matrix theory ($χ$RMT) can be used in the study of large-$N_c$ gauge theories. We first clarify the parameter region in which each of these two approaches is valid: while the fermion mass $m$ is fixed in the standard large-$N_c$ arguments ('t Hooft large-$N_c$ limit), $m$ must be scaled appropriately with a certain negative power of $N_c$ in order for the gauge theories to be described by the $χ$RMT. Then, although these two limits are not compatible in general, we show that the breakdown of chiral symmetry can be detected by combining the large-$N_c$ argument and the $χ$RMT with some cares. As a concrete example, we numerically study the four dimensional $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory with $N_f=2$ heavy adjoint fermions, introduced as the center symmetry preserver keeping the infrared physics intact, on a $2^4$ lattice. By looking at the low-lying eigenvalues of the Dirac operator for a massless probe fermion in the adjoint representation, we find that the chiral symmetry is indeed broken with the expected breaking pattern. This result reproduces a well-known fact that the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in the pure $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory in the large-$N_c$ and the large-volume limit, and therefore supports the validity of the combined approach. We also provide the interpretation of the gap and unexpected $N_c$-scaling, both of which are observed in the Dirac spectrum.

Large Nc volume reduction and chiral random matrix theory

Motivated by recent progress on the understanding of the Eguchi-Kawai (EK) volume equivalence and growing interest in conformal window, we simultaneously use the large-Nc volume reduction and Chiral Random Matrix Theory (chRMT) to study the chiral symmetry breaking of four dimensional SU(Nc) gauge theory with adjoint fermions in the large Nc limit. Although some cares are required because the chRMT limit and 't Hooft limit are not compatible in general, we show that the breakdown of the chiral symmetry can be detected in large-Nc gauge theories. As a first step, we mainly focus on the quenched approximation to establish the methodology. We first confirm that heavy adjoint fermions, introduced as the center symmetry preserver, work as expected and thanks to them the volume reduction holds. Using massless overlap fermion as a probe, we then calculate the low-lying Dirac spectrum for fermion in the adjoint representation to compare to that of chRMT, and find that chiral symmetry is indeed broken in the quenched theory.

Monte Carlo approach to the string/M-theory

It has long been conjectured that certain supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories provide us with nonperturbative formulations of the string/M-theory. Although the supersymmetry (SUSY) on lattice is notoriously difficult in general, for a class of theories important for the string/M-theory various lattice and non-lattice methods, which enable us to study them on computers, have been proposed by now. In this talk, firstly I explain how SYM and string/M-theory are related. Then I explain why the lattice SUSY is difficult in general, and how the difficulties are solved in theories related to string/M-theory. Then I review the status of the simulations. It is explained that some stringy effects are correctly incorporated in SYM. Furthermore, concrete values can be obtained from the SYM side, even when a direct calculation on the string theory side is impossible by the state-of-the-art techniques. We also comment on other recent developments, including the membrane mini-revolution in 2008 and simulation of the matrix model formulation of the string theory.

Monte Carlo studies of 3d N=6 SCFT via localization method

We perform Monte Carlo study of the 3d N=6 superconformal U(N)*U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory (ABJM theory), which is conjectured to be dual to M-theory or type IIA superstring theory on certain AdS backgrounds. Our approach is based on a localization method, which reduces the problem to the simulation of a simple matrix model. This enables us to circumvent the difficulties in the original theory such as the sign problem and the SUSY breaking on a lattice. The new approach opens up the possibility of probing the quantum aspects of M-theory and testing the AdS_4/CFT_3 duality at the quantum level. Here we calculate the free energy, and confirm the N^{3/2} scaling in the M-theory limit predicted from the gravity side. We also find that our results nicely interpolate the analytical formulae proposed previously in the M-theory and type IIA regimes.

Phase quenching in finite-density QCD: models, holography, and lattice

Finite-density QCD is difficult to study numerically because of the sign problem. We prove that, in a certain region of the phase diagram, the phase quenched approximation is exact to O(Nf/Nc). It is true for any physical observables. We also consider the implications for the lattice simulations and find a quantitative evidence for the validity of the phase quenching from existing lattice QCD results at Nc=3. Our results show that the phase-quench approximation is rather good already at Nc=3, and the 1/Nc correction can be incorporated by the phase reweighting method without suffering from the overlap problem. We also show the same equivalence in effective models and holographic models.

Sign problem and phase quenching in finite-density QCD: models, holography, and lattice

The effect of the complex phase of the fermion determinant is a key question related to the sign problem in finite-density QCD. Recently it has been shown that ignoring the complex phase -- the phase quenching -- does not change physics in a certain region of the phase diagram when a number of colors N_c is large. In this paper we study the effect of the phase quenching within the frameworks of effective models and holographic models. We show, in a unified manner, that the phase quenching gives exact results for any fermionic observables (e.g., chiral condensate) in the mean-field approximation and for gauge-invariant gluonic observables (e.g., Polyakov loop) to one-meson-loop corrections beyond mean field. We also discuss implications for the lattice simulations and confirm good quantitative agreement between our prediction and existing lattice QCD results. Therefore the phase quenching provides rather accurate answer already at N_c=3 with small 1/N_c corrections which can be taken into account by the phase reweighting.

Large-Nc equivalence and the sign problem at finite baryon density

QCD with a finite baryon chemical potential, despite its importance, is not well understood because the standard lattice QCD simulation is not applicable due to the sign problem. Although QCD-like theories which do not suffer from the sign problem have been studied intensively, relation to QCD with a finite baryon chemical potential was not clear. This paper introduces large-$N_c$ equivalences between QCD and various QCD-like theories. These equivalences lead us to a unified viewpoint for QCD with baryon and isospin chemical potentials, $SO(2N_c)$ and $Sp(2N_c)$ gauge theories, QCD with adjoint matters and two-color QCD. In particular QCD with the baryon chemical potential is large-$N_c$ equivalent to its phase quenched version in a certain parameter region, which is relevant for heavy ion collision experiments. All previous simulation results which study the effect of the phase confirm the phase quench approximation is quantitatively good already at Nc=3; it is so good that often two theories give the same value within error. Therefore the phase quenched simulation is the best strategy for the QCD critical point search. At small volume one can study a tiny 1/Nc effect by the phase reweighting; the large-Nc equivalence guarantees that the phase reweighing method works without suffering from the overlapping problem.

A new large-N limit and the planar equivalence outside the planar limit

We consider a new large-N limit, in which the 't Hooft coupling grows with N. We argue that a class of large-N equivalences, which is known to hold in the 't Hooft limit, can be extended to this very strongly coupled limit. Hence this limit may lead to a new way of studying corrections to the 't Hooft limit, while keeping nice properties of the latter. As a concrete example, we describe large-N equivalences between the ABJM theory and its orientifold projection. The equivalence implies that operators neutral under the projection symmetry have the same correlation functions in two theories at large-N. Usual field theory arguments are valid when 't Hooft coupling $λ\sim N/k$ is fixed and observables can be computed by using a planar diagrammatic expansion. With the help of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we argue that the equivalence extends to stronger coupling regions, $N\gg k$, including the M-theory region $N\gg k^5$. We further argue that the orbifold/orientifold equivalences between certain Yang-Mills theories can also be generalized. Such equivalences can be tested both analytically and numerically. Based on calculations of the free energy, we conjecture that the equivalences hold because planar dominance persists beyond the 't Hooft limit.

Numerical studies of the ABJM theory for arbitrary N at arbitrary coupling constant

We show that the ABJM theory, which is an N=6 superconformal U(N)*U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory, can be studied for arbitrary N at arbitrary coupling constant by applying a simple Monte Carlo method to the matrix model that can be derived from the theory by using the localization technique. This opens up the possibility of probing the quantum aspects of M-theory and testing the AdS_4/CFT_3 duality at the quantum level. Here we calculate the free energy, and confirm the N^{3/2} scaling in the M-theory limit predicted from the gravity side. We also find that our results nicely interpolate the analytical formulae proposed previously in the M-theory and type IIA regimes. Furthermore, we show that some results obtained by the Fermi gas approach can be clearly understood from the constant map contribution obtained by the genus expansion. The method can be easily generalized to the calculations of BPS operators and to other theories that reduce to matrix models.

On a new type of orbifold equivalence and M-theoretic AdS4/CFT3 duality

We consider the large-N limit of \mathcal{N}=6 U(N) \times U(N) superconformal Chern-Simons (ABJM) theory with fixed level k, which is conjectured to be dual to M-theory on AdS4\times (S^7/Z_k) background. We point out that the so-called orbifold equivalence on the gravity side, combined with the AdS4/CFT3 duality, predicts a hitherto unknown type of duality on the gauge theory side. It establishes the equivalence between a class of observables, which are not necessarily protected by supersymmetry, in strongly coupled ABJM theories away from the planar approximation, with different values of k and N but sharing common kN. This limit is vastly different from the planar limit, and hence from the gauge theory point of view the duality is more difficult to explain compared to the previously known analogous equivalence between planar gauge theories, where one can explicitly prove the equivalence diagrammatically using the dominance of the planar diagrams.

Universality of Phases in QCD and QCD-like Theories

We argue that the whole or the part of the phase diagrams of QCD and QCD-like theories should be universal in the large-N_c limit through the orbifold equivalence. The whole phase diagrams, including the chiral phase transitions and the BEC-BCS crossover regions, are identical between SU(N_c) QCD at finite isospin chemical potential and SO(2N_c) and Sp(2N_c) gauge theories at finite baryon chemical potential. Outside the BEC-BCS crossover region in these theories, the phase diagrams are also identical to that of SU(N_c) QCD at finite baryon chemical potential. We give examples of the universality in some solvable cases: (i) QCD and QCD-like theories at asymptotically high density where the controlled weak-coupling calculations are possible, (ii) chiral random matrix theories of different universality classes, which are solvable large-N (large volume) matrix models of QCD. Our results strongly suggest that the chiral phase transition and the QCD critical point at finite baryon chemical potential can be studied using sign-free theories, such as QCD at finite isospin chemical potential, in lattice simulations.

Holographic realization of large-Nc orbifold equivalence with non-zero chemical potential

Recently, it has been suggested that large-Nc orbifold equivalences may be applicable to certain theories with chemical potentials, including QCD, in certain portions of their phase diagram. When valid, such an equivalence offers the possibility of relating large-Nc QCD at non-zero baryon chemical potential, a theory with a complex fermion determinant, to a related theory whose fermion determinant is real and positive. In this paper, we provide a test of this large Nc equivalence using a holographic realization of a supersymmetric theory with baryon chemical potential and a related theory with isospin chemical potential. We show that the two strongly-coupled, large-Nc theories are equivalent in a large region of the phase diagram.

Non-perturbative construction of 2D and 4D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with 8 supercharges

In this paper, we consider two-dimensional N=(4,4) supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and deform it by a mass parameter M with keeping all supercharges. We further add another mass parameter m in a manner to respect two of the eight supercharges and put the deformed theory on a two-dimensional square lattice, on which the two supercharges are exactly preserved. The flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized due to the mass deformations, which gives discrete minima representing fuzzy spheres. We show in the perturbation theory that the lattice continuum limit can be taken without any fine tuning. Around the trivial minimum, this lattice theory serves as a non-perturbative definition of two-dimensional N=(4,4) SYM theory. We also discuss that the same lattice theory realizes four-dimensional N = 2 U(k) SYM on R^2 x (Fuzzy R^2) around the minimum of k-coincident fuzzy spheres.

Universality of phase diagrams in QCD and QCD-like theories

We show the universality of phase diagrams in QCD and QCD-like theories through the large-N_c equivalence. The whole phase diagrams are identical between QCD at finite isospin chemical potential and SO(2N_c) and Sp(2N_c) gauge theories at finite baryon chemical potential. In the chiral limit, they are also identical to that of QCD at finite chiral chemical potential. Outside the pion or diquark condensed phase in these theories, the universality of phase diagrams is applicable to QCD at finite baryon chemical potential. We further argue that the universality may work approximately even for N_c=3. Our result makes it possible to study QCD at finite baryon chemical potential and high temperature, especially the chiral phase transition, using sign-free theories on the lattice.

Recent progress of lattice and non-lattice super Yang-Mills

We report recent progress of non-perturbative formulation of supersymmetric Yang-Mills. Although lattice formulations of two-dimensional theories which are fine tuning free to all order in perturbation theory are known for almost ten years, however, there were only few evidence for the validity at non-perturbative level. In this talk we argue that most numerical studies so far do not capture the physics in continuum, and add new evidence that lattice formulation works at non-perturbatively. We further point out that, by combining two-dimensional lattice and matrix model techniques inspired by D-brane dynamics in superstring theory, a non-perturbative formulation of the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, which is free from the fine tuning at least to all order in perturbation theory, is obtained.
