Multi-matrix models and emergent geometry

Encouraged by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study emergent local geometry in large N multi-matrix models from the perspective of a strong coupling expansion. By considering various solvable interacting models we show how the emergence or non-emergence of local geometry at strong coupling is captured by observables that effectively measure the mass of off-diagonal excitations about a semiclassical eigenvalue background. We find emergent geometry at strong coupling in models where a mass term regulates an infrared divergence. We also show that our notion of emergent geometry can be usefully applied to fuzzy spheres. Although most of our results are analytic, we have found numerical input valuable in guiding and checking our results.

Schwarzschild radius from Monte Carlo calculation of the Wilson loop in supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics

In the string/gauge duality it is important to understand how the space-time geometry is encoded in gauge theory observables. We address this issue in the case of the D0-brane system at finite temperature T. Based on the duality, the temporal Wilson loop operator W in gauge theory is expected to contain the information of the Schwarzschild radius R_{Sch} of the dual black hole geometry as log = R_{Sch} / (2 pi alpha' T). This translates to the power-law behavior log = 1.89 (T/lambda^{1/3})^{-3/5}, where lambda is the 't Hooft coupling constant. We calculate the Wilson loop on the gauge theory side in the strongly coupled regime by performing Monte Carlo simulation of supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with 16 supercharges. The results reproduce the expected power-law behavior up to a constant shift, which is explainable as alpha' corrections on the gravity side.

Putting M theory on a computer

We propose a non-lattice simulation for studying supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics in a non-perturbative manner. In particular, our method enables us to put M theory on a computer based on its matrix formulation proposed by Banks, Fischler, Shenker and Susskind. Here we present Monte Carlo results of the same matrix model but in a different parameter region, which corresponds to the 't Hooft large-N limit at finite temperature. In the strong coupling limit the model has a dual description in terms of the N D0-brane solution in 10d type IIA supergravity. Our results provide highly nontrivial evidences for the conjectured duality. In particular, the energy (and hence the entropy) of the non-extremal black hole has been reproduced by solving directly the strongly coupled dynamics of the D0-brane effective theory.

Phase structure of twisted Eguchi-Kawai model

Twisted Eguchi-Kawai model is a useful tool for studying the large-N gauge theory. It can also provide a nonperturbative formulation of the gauge theory on noncommutative spaces. Recently it was found that the Z_N^4 symmetry in this model, which is crucial for the above applications, can break spontaneously in the intermediate coupling region. In this article, we study the phase structure of this model using the Monte-Carlo simulation. In particular, we elaborately investigate the symmetry breaking point from the weak coupling side. The simulation results show that we cannot take a continuum limit for this model.

Phase structure of twisted Eguchi-Kawai model

We study the phase structure of the four-dimensional twisted Eguchi-Kawai model using numerical simulations. This model is an effective tool for studying SU(N) gauge theory in the large-N limit and provides a nonperturbative formulation of the gauge theory on noncommutative spaces. Recently it was found that its Z_N^4 symmetry, which is crucial for the validity of this model, can break spontaneously in the intermediate coupling region. We investigate in detail the symmetry breaking point from the weak coupling side. Our simulation results show that the continuum limit of this model cannot be taken.

Cascade of Gregory-Laflamme Transitions and U(1) Breakdown in Super Yang-Mills

In this paper we consider black p-branes on square torus. We find an indication of a cascade of Gregory-Laflamme transitions between black p-brane and (p-1)-brane. Through AdS/CFT correspondence, these transitions are related to the breakdown of the U(1) symmetry in super Yang-Mills on torus. We argue a relationship between the cascade and recent Monte-Carlo data.

Monte Carlo studies of supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with sixteen supercharges at finite temperature

We present the first Monte Carlo results for supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with sixteen supercharges at finite temperature. The recently proposed non-lattice simulation enables us to include the effects of fermionic matrices in a transparent and reliable manner. The internal energy nicely interpolates the weak coupling behavior obtained by the high temperature expansion, and the strong coupling behavior predicted from the dual black hole geometry. The Polyakov line takes large values even at low temperature suggesting the absence of a phase transition in sharp contrast to the bosonic case. These results provide highly non-trivial evidences for the gauge/gravity duality.

Non-lattice simulation for supersymmetric gauge theories in one dimension

Lattice simulation of supersymmetric gauge theories is not straightforward. In some cases the lack of manifest supersymmetry just necessitates cumbersome fine-tuning, but in the worse cases the chiral and/or Majorana nature of fermions makes it difficult to even formulate an appropriate lattice theory. We propose to circumvent all these problems inherent in the lattice approach by adopting a non-lattice approach in the case of one-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories, which are important in the string/M theory context.

Phase structure of the large-N reduced gauge theory and generalized Weingarten model

We study a generalization of Weingarten model reduced to a point, which becomes the large-N reduced U(N) gauge theory in a special limit. We find that the U(1)^d symmetry is broken one by one, and restored simultaneously as U(1)^d -> U(1)^{d-1} -> ... -> U(1) -> 1 -> U(1)^d as we change the coupling constants. In this model we can develop an efficient algorithm and we can see the phase structure of large-N reduced model clearly, and therefore this model would be useful for the study of the unitary model.

String tension and string susceptibility in two-dimensional generalized Weingarten model

We study the two-dimensional generalized Weingarten model reduced to a point, which interpolates reduced Weingarten model and the large-N gauge theory. We calculate the expectation value of the Wilson loop using Monte-Carlo method and determine the string tension and string susceptibility. The numerical result suggests that the string susceptibility approaches to -2 in a certain parametric region, which implies that the branched-polymer configurations are suppressed.

Field Equations of Massless Fields in the New Interpretation of the Matrix Model

Recently, some of the authors have introduced a new interpretation of matrix models in which covariant derivatives on any curved space can be expressed by large-N matrices. It has been shown that the Einstein equation follows from the equation of motion of IIB matrix model in this interpretation. In this paper, we generalize this argument to covariant derivatives with torsion. We find that some components of the torsion field can be identified with the dilaton and the $B$-field in string theory. However, the other components do not seem to have string theory counterparts. We also consider the matrix model with a mass term or a cubic term, in which the equation of motion of string theory is exactly satisfied.

Regularization of the Covariant Derivative on Curved Space by Finite Matrices

In a previous paper [M.~Hanada, H.~Kawai and Y.~Kimura, Prog. Theor. Phys. 114 (2005), 1295] it is shown that a covariant derivative on any n-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be expressed in terms of a set of n matrices, and a new interpretation of IIB matrix model, in which the diffeomorphism, the local Lorentz symmetry and their higher spin analogues are embedded in the unitary symmetry, is proposed. In this article we investigate several coset manifolds in this formulation and show that on these backgrounds, it is possible to carry out calculations at the level of finite matrices by using the properties of the Lie algebras. We show how the local fields and the symmetries are embedded as components of matrices and how to extract the physical degrees of freedom satisfying the constraint proposed in the previous paper.

Describing Curved Spaces by Matrices

It is shown that a covariant derivative on any d-dimensional manifold M can be mapped to a set of d operators acting on the space of functions on the principal Spin(d)-bundle over M. In other words, any d-dimensional manifold can be described in terms of d operators acting on an infinite dimensional space. Therefore it is natural to introduce a new interpretation of matrix models in which matrices represent such operators. In this interpretation the diffeomorphism, local Lorentz symmetry and their higher-spin analogues are included in the unitary symmetry of the matrix model. Furthermore the Einstein equation is obtained from the equation of motion, if we take the standard form of the action S=-tr([A_{a},A_{b}][A^{a},A^{b}]).

Curved Superspaces and Local Supersymmetry in Supermatrix Model

In a previous paper, we introduced a new interpretation of matrix models, in which any d-dimensional curved space can be realized in terms of d matrices, and the diffeomorphism and the local Lorentz symmetries are included in the ordinary unitary symmetry of the matrix model. Furthermore, we showed that the Einstein equation is naturally obtained, if we employ the standard form of the action, S=-tr([A_a,A_b][A^a,A^b])+.... In this paper, we extend this formalism to include supergravity. We show that the supercovariant derivatives on any d-dimensional curved space can be expressed in terms of d supermatrices, and the local supersymmetry can be regarded as a part of the superunitary symmetry. We further show that the Einstein and Rarita-Schwinger equations are compatible with the supermatrix generalization of the standard action.

Fuzzy Torus in Matrix Model

We have calculated the free energy up to two loop to compare T^2 with T^4 in IIB matrix model. It turns out that T^2 has smaller free energy than T^4. We have also discussed the generation of the gauge group by considering k-coincident fuzzy tori and found that in this case U(1) gauge group is favored. This means that if the true vacuum is four-dimensional, it is not a simple fuzzy space considered here.
