Black hole shadow and Maximal Black room

To comprehend the shadow of a black hole in a general spacetime, we have investigated the concept of the maximal black room (MBR). The boundary of the MBR is a non-spacelike hypersurface that contains at least one null geodesic tangent to its boundary, which we refer to as the rays' surface. Our aim is to explore the geometry of this surface. From our current study, we have observed that the boundary of the MBR is globally unstable. Leveraging this instability, we can determine the boundary based on the physical choice of the initial spacelike hypersurface and the orthogonal condition at that point. Upon examining the existence of the MBR, we can observe that it encompasses any arbitrary black hole. Additionally, we can investigate the possibility of using the MBR to differentiate a black hole from an exotic star with a photon sphere. In spherically symmetric spacetime, subject to energy conditions, the rays' surface encloses a black hole, a naked singularity, or exotic matter that has an inner universe.

Black hole shadow and Wandering null geodesics

The role of the wandering null geodesic is studied in a black hole spacetime. Based on the continuity of the solution of the geodesic equation, the wandering null geodesics commonly exist and explain the typical phenomena of the optical observation of event horizons. Moreover, a new concept of `black room' is investigated to relate the wandering null geodesic to the black hole shadow more closely.

Causal concept for black hole shadows

Causal concept for the general black hole shadow is investigated, instead of the photon sphere. We define several `wandering null geodesics' as complete null geodesics accompanied by repetitive conjugate points, which would correspond to null geodesics on the photon sphere in Schwarzschild spacetime. We also define a `wandering set', that is, a set of totally wandering null geodesics as a counterpart of the photon sphere, and moreover, a truncated wandering null geodesic to symbolically discuss its formation. Then we examine the existence of a wandering null geodesic in general black hole spacetimes mainly in terms of Weyl focusing. We will see the essence of the black hole shadow is not the stationary cycling of the photon orbits which is the concept only available in a stationary spacetime, but their accumulation. A wandering null geodesic implies that this accumulation will be occur somewhere in an asymptotically flat spacetime.

Dynamical deformation of 2+1 dimensional double torus universe

In (2+1)-dimensional pure gravity with cosmological constant, the dynamics of double torus universe with pinching parameter is investigated. Each mode of affine stretching deformation is illustrated in the context of horizontal foliation along the holomorphic quadratic differential. The formulation of the Einstein Hilbert action for the parameters of the affine stretching is developed. Then the dynamics along one holomorphic quadratic differential will be solved concretely.

Dynamical degrees of freedom for higher genus Riemann surface in (2+1)-dimensional general relativity

A homogeneous two-dimensional metric including the degrees of freedom of Teichmüller deformation is developed. The Teichmüller deformation is incorporated by affine stretching of complex structure. According to Yamada's investigation by pinching parameter, concrete formulation for a higher genus Riemann surface can be realized. We will have a homogeneous standard metric including the dynamical degrees of freedom as Teichmüller deformation in a leading order of the pinching parameter, which would be treated as homogeneous anisotropic metric for a double torus universe, which satisfy momentum constraints.

Perturbations of Cosmological and Black Hole Solutions in Massive gravity and Bi-gravity

We investigate perturbations of a class of spherically symmetric solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity. The background equations of motion for the particular class of solutions we are interested in reduce to a set of the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant. Thus, the solutions in this class include all the spherically symmetric solutions in general relativity, such as the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solution and the Schwarzschild (-de Sitter) solution, though the one-parameter family of two parameters of the theory admits such a class of solutions. We find that the equations of motion for the perturbations of this class of solutions also reduce to the perturbed Einstein equations at first and second order. Therefore, the stability of the solutions coincides with that of the corresponding solutions in general relativity. In particular, these solutions do not suffer from non-linear instabilities which often appear in the other cosmological solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity.

Teichmüller parameters for multiple BTZ black hole spacetime

We investigate the Teichmüller parameters for a Euclidean multiple BTZ black hole spacetime. To induce a complex structure in the asymptotic boundary of such a spacetime, we consider the limit in which two black holes are at a large distance from each other. In this limit, we can approximately determine the period matrix (i.e., the Teichmüller parameters) for the spacetime boundary by using a pinching parameter. The Teichmüller parameters are essential in describing the partition function for the boundary conformal field theory (CFT). We provide an interpretation of the partition function for the genus two extremal boundary CFT proposed by Gaiotto and Yin that it is relevant to double BTZ black hole spacetime.

Head-on collision and merging entropy of black holes: reconsideration of Hawking's inequality

We evaluate how much energy can be converted into gravitational radiation in head-on collision of black holes. We estimate it by the area theorem of black hole horizon incorporating merging entropy of colliding black holes from a viewpoint of black hole thermodynamics. Then we obtain an upper bound of energy ratio of the gravitational radiation which is smaller than the upper bound originally derived by Hawking. The fact that this estimation is not inconsistent with the results of both numerical investigations in low- and high-energy head-on collision implies that thermodynamics of coalescing black holes requires the contribution of the merging entropy.

New Cosmological Solutions in Massive Gravity

We find new, simple cosmological solutions with flat, open, and closed spatial geometries, contrary to the previous wisdom that only the open model is allowed. The metric and the Stückelberg fields are given explicitly, showing nontrivial configurations of the Stückelberg in the usual Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker coordinates. The solutions exhibit self-acceleration, while being free from ghost instabilities. Our solutions can accommodate inhomogeneous dust collapse represented by the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi metric as well. Thus, our results can be used not only to describe homogeneous and isotropic cosmology but also to study gravitational collapse in massive gravity.

Gravitational collapse in Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates

We construct an exact solution for the spherical gravitational collapse in a single coordinate patch. To describe the dynamics of collapse, we use a generalized form of the Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates in the Schwarzschild spacetime. The time coordinate of the form is the proper time of a free-falling observer so that we can describe the collapsing star not only outside but also inside the event horizon in a single coordinate patch. We show the both solutions corresponding to the gravitational collapse from infinity and from a finite radius.

Slow-roll Extended Quintessence

We derive the slow-roll conditions for a non-minimally coupled scalar field (extended quintessence) during the radiation/matter dominated era extending our previous results for thawing quintessence. We find that the ratio $\ddotϕ/3H\dotϕ$ becomes constant but negative, in sharp contrast to the ratio for the minimally coupled scalar field. We also find that the functional form of the equation of state of the scalar field asymptotically approaches that of the minimally coupled thawing quintessence.

Half period theorem of binary black holes

Merging event horizons of the binary black holes is investigated. While recent development of the numerical study of the binary black hole coalescence has shown that their apparent horizons can orbit for many periods, we study the orbital motion of the event horizon. We discuss how many periods their event horizons orbit before their coalescence. Then, we find that they soon merge into one and the black holes cannot orbit for a half period while the apparent horizons can orbit many times.

Topology Change of Black Holes

The topological structure of the event horizon has been investigated in terms of the Morse theory. The elementary process of topological evolution can be understood as a handle attachment. It has been found that there are certain constraints on the nature of black hole topological evolution: (i) There are n kinds of handle attachments in (n+1)-dimensional black hole space-times. (ii) Handles are further classified as either of black or white type, and only black handles appear in real black hole space-times. (iii) The spatial section of an exterior of the black hole region is always connected. As a corollary, it is shown that the formation of a black hole with an S**(n-2) x S**1 horizon from that with an S**(n-1) horizon must be non-axisymmetric in asymptotically flat space-times.

Operator geometry and algebraic gravity

An algebraic formulation of general relativity is proposed. The formulation is applicable to quantum gravity and noncommutative space. To investigate quantum gravity we develop the canonical formalism of operator geometry, after reconstructing an algebraic canonical formulation on analytical dynamics. The remarkable fact is that the constraint equation and evolution equation of the gravitational system are algebraically unified. From the discussion of regularization we find the quantum correction of the semi-classical gravity is same as that already known in quantum field theory.

Limit structure of Future Null Infinity tangent -topology of the event horizon and gravitational wave tail-

We investigated the relation between the behavior of gravitational wave at late time and the limit structure of future null infinity tangent which will determine the topology of the event horizon far in the future. In the present article, we mainly consider a spacetime with two black holes. Although in most of cases, the black holes coalesce and its event horizon is topologically a single sphere far in the future, there are several possibilities that the black holes never coalesce and such exact solutions as examples. In our formulation, the tangent vector of future null infinity is, under conformal embedding, related to the number of black holes far in the future through the Poincaré-Hopf's theorem. Under the conformal embedding, the topology of event horizon far in the future will be affected by the geometrical structure of the future null infinity. In this article, we related the behavior of Weyl curvature to this limit behavior of the generator vector of the future null infinity. We show if Weyl curvature decays sufficiently slowly at late time in the neighborhood of future null infinity, two black holes never coalesce.

Topology of event horizon in axially symmetric spacetime: Classification of Maxwell set with symmetry

The crease set of an event horizon is studied in a spacetime with discrete or continuous symmetry. It determines possible topologies on spatial sections of an event horizon. We thereby investigate the classification of stable topological structure of the crease sets in a spacetime with any symmetry. In practice, we show the classification of the crease set in axially symmetric spacetime. By that we realize the topological structure of axially symmetric event horizons. We will finc that many new topological structures become stable which is not stable without symmetry.

Topological classification of black Hole: Generic Maxwell set and crease set of horizon

The crease set of an event horizon or a Cauchy horizon is an important object which determines qualitative properties of the horizon. In particular, it determines the possible topologies of the spatial sections of the horizon. By Fermat's principle in geometric optics, we relate the crease set and the Maxwell set of a smooth function in the context of singularity theory. We thereby give a classification of generic topological structure of the Maxwell sets and the generic topologies of the spatial section of the horizon.

Topological derivation of Black Hole entropy by analogy with a chain polymer

The generic crease set of an event horizon possesses anisotropic structure though most of black holes are dynamically stable. This fact suggests that a generic almost spherical black hole has a very crumpled crease set in a microscopic scale though the crease set is similar to a point-wise crease set in a macroscopic scale. In the present article, we count the number of such micro-states of an almost spherical black hole by analogy with an elastic chain polymer. This estimation of black hole entropy reproduces the well-known Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole.
