Soliton Resonances in Four Dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten Model

We present two kinds of resonance soliton solutions on the Ultrahyperbolic space $\mathbb{U}$ for the G=U(2) Yang equation, which is equivalent to the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills (ASDYM) equation. We reveal and illustrate the solitonic behaviors in the four-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW$_4$) model through the sigma model action densities. The Yang equation is the equation of motion of the WZW$_4$ model. In the case of $\mathbb{U}$, the WZW$_4$ model describes a string field theory action of open N=2 string theories. Hence, our solutions on $\mathbb{U}$ suggest the existence of the corresponding classical objects in the N=2 string theories. Our solutions include multiple-pole solutions and V-shape soliton solutions. The V-shape solitons suggest annihilation and creation processes of two solitons and would be building blocks to classify the ASDYM solitons, like the role of Y-shape solitons in classification of the KP (line) solitons. We also clarify the relationship between the Cauchy matrix approach and the binary Darboux transformation in terms of quasideterminants. Our formalism can start with a simpler input data for the soliton solutions and hence might give a suitable framework for the classification of the ASDYM solitons.

Solitons in 4d Wess-Zumino-Witten models -- Towards unification of integrable systems --

We construct soliton solutions of the four-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten (4dWZW) model in the context of a unified theory of integrable systems with relation to the 4d/6d Chern-Simons theory. We calculate the action density of the solutions and find that the soliton solutions behave as the KP-type solitons, that is, the one-soliton solution has a localized action/energy density on a 3d hyperplane in 4-dimensions (soliton wall) and the n-soliton solution describes n intersecting soliton walls with phase shifts. We note that the Ward conjecture holds mostly in the split signature (+,+,-,-). Furthermore, the 4dWZW model describes the string field theory action of the open N=2 string theory in the four-dimensional space-time with the split signature and hence our soliton solutions would describe a new-type of physical objects in the N=2 string theory. We discuss instanton solutions in the 4dWZW model as well. Noncommutative extension and quantization of the unified theory of integrable systems are also discussed.

Solitons in Open N=2 String Theory

The open N=2 string theory is defined on the four-dimensional space-time with the split signature (+,+,-,-). The string field theory action of the open N=2 string theory is described by the four-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW_4) model. Equation of motion of the WZW_4 model is the Yang equation which is equivalent to the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equation. In this paper, we study soliton-type classical solutions of the WZW_4 model in the split signature by calculating the action density of the WZW_4 model. We find that the action density of the one-soliton solutions is localized on a three-dimensional hyperplane. This shows that there would be codimension-one-solitonic objects, or equivalently, some kind of three-branes in the open N=2 string theory. We also prove that in the asymptotic region of the space-time, the action density of the n-soliton solutions is a ``nonlinear superposition'' of n one-solitons. This suggests the existence of intersecting n three-branes in the N=2 strings. Finally we make a reduction to a (1+2)-dimensional real space-time to calculate energy densities of the soliton solutions. We can successfully evaluate the energy distribution for the two-soliton solutions and find that there is no singularity in the interacting region. This implies the existence of smooth intersecting codimension-one branes in the whole region. Soliton solutions in the Euclidean signature are also discussed.

Multi-Soliton Dynamics of Anti-Self-Dual Gauge Fields

We study dynamics of multi-soliton solutions of anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations for G=GL(2,C) in four-dimensional spaces. The one-soliton solution can be interpreted as a codimension-one soliton in four-dimensional spaces because the principal peak of action density localizes on a three-dimensional hyperplane. We call it the soliton wall. We prove that in the asymptotic region, the n-soliton solution possesses n isolated localized lumps of action density, and interpret it as n intersecting soliton walls. More precisely, each action density lump is essentially the same as a soliton wall because it preserves its shape and "velocity" except for a position shift of principal peak in the scattering process. The position shift results from the nonlinear interactions of the multi-solitons and is called the phase shift. We calculate the phase shift factors explicitly and find that the action densities can be real-valued in three kind of signatures. Finally, we show that the gauge group can be G=U(2) in the Ultrahyperbolic space (the split signature (+, +, -, -)). This implies that the intersecting soliton walls could be realized in all region in N=2 string theories. It is remarkable that quasideterminants dramatically simplify the calculations and proofs.

New Soliton Solutions of Anti-Self-Dual Yang-Mills equations

We study exact soliton solutions of anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations for $G =GL(2)$ in four-dimensional spaces with the Euclidean, Minkowski and Ultrahyperbolic signatures and construct special kinds of one-soliton solutions whose action density Tr$F_{μν}F^{μν}$ can be real-valued. These solitons are shown to be new type of domain walls in four dimension by explicit calculation of the real-valued action density. Our results are successful applications of the Darboux transformation developed by Nimmo, Gilson and Ohta. More surprisingly, integration of these action densities over the four-dimensional spaces are suggested to be not infinity but zero. Furthermore, whether gauge group $G= U(2)$ can be realized on our solition solutions or not is also discussed on each real space.

Soliton Solutions of Noncommutative Anti-Self-Dual Yang-Mills Equations

We present exact soliton solutions of anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations for G=GL(N) on noncommutative Euclidean spaces in four-dimension by using the Darboux transformations. Generated solutions are represented by quasideterminants of Wronski matrices in compact forms. We give special one-soliton solutions for G=GL(2) whose energy density can be real-valued. We find that the soliton solutions are the same as the commutative ones and can be interpreted as one-domain walls in four-dimension. Scattering processes of the multi-soliton solutions are also discussed.

Soliton Scattering in Noncommutative Spaces

We discuss exact multi-soliton solutions to integrable hierarchies on noncommutative space-times in diverse dimension. The solutions are represented by quasi-determinants in compact forms. We study soliton scattering processes in the asymptotic region where the configurations could be real-valued. We find that the asymptotic configurations in the soliton scatterings can be all the same as commutative ones, that is, the configuration of N-soliton solution has N isolated localized lump of energy and each solitary wave-packet lump preserves its shape and velocity in the scattering process. The phase shifts are also the same as commutative ones. As new results, we present multi-soliton solutions to noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills hierarchy and discuss 2-soliton scattering in detail.

Classical Integrable Systems and Gauge Theory

This is an introductory survey written in Japanese on classical integrability from the viewpoint of symmetry reduction of 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Twistor construction methods are discussed in detail in 4-dimension. Exact local solutions are, in this article, presented in terms of quasideterminants in a compact form. Some integrable aspects in lower-dimension are clarified in the context of the reduction. Noncommutative extension and higher-dimensional extension are briefly discussed.

Noncommutative Solitons and Quasideterminants

We discuss extension of soliton theory and integrable systems to noncommutative spaces, focusing on integrable aspects of noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. We give wide class of exact solutions by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem for the Atiyah-Ward ansatz and present Backlund transformations for the G=U(2) noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. We find that one kind of noncommutative determinants, quasideterminants, play crucial roles in the construction of noncommutative solutions. We also discuss reduction of a noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equation to noncommutative integrable equations. This is partially based on collaboration with C. Gilson and J. Nimmo (Glasgow).

Hyperkahler Metrics from Monopole Walls

We present ALH hyperkahler metrics induced from well-separated SU(2) monopole walls which are equivalent to monopoles on T^2 x R. The metrics are explicitly obtained due to Manton's observation by using explicit monopole solutions. These are doubly-periodic and have the modular invariance with respect to the complex structure of the complex torus T^2. We also derive metrics from monopole walls with Dirac-type singularities.

ADHM Construction of Noncommutative Instantons

We discuss the Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) construction of U(N) instantons in noncommutative (NC) space and prove the one-to-one correspondence between moduli spaces of the noncommutative instantons and the ADHM data, together with an origin of the instanton number for U(1). We also give a derivation of the ADHM construction from the viewpoint of the Nahm transformation of instantons on four-tori. This article is a composite version of [23] and [24].

Noncommutative Integrable Systems and Quasideterminants

We discuss extension of soliton theories and integrable systems into noncommutative spaces. In the framework of noncommutative integrable hierarchy, we give infinite conserved quantities and exact soliton solutions for many noncommutative integrable equations, which are represented in terms of Strachan's products and quasi-determinants, respectively. We also present a relation to an noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equation, and make comments on how "integrability" should be considered in noncommutative spaces.

Bäcklund Transformations and the Atiyah-Ward ansatz for Noncommutative Anti-Self-Dual Yang-Mills Equations

We present Backlund transformations for the noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equation where the gauge group is G=GL(2) and use it to generate a series of exact solutions from a simple seed solution. The solutions generated by this approach are represented in terms of quasideterminants. We also explain the origins of all of the ingredients of the Backlund transformations within the framework of noncommutative twistor theory. In particular we show that the generated solutions belong to a noncommutative version of the Atiyah-Ward ansatz.

Bäcklund Transformations for Noncommutative Anti-Self-Dual Yang-Mills Equations

We present Backlund transformations for the noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equation where the gauge group is G=GL(2) and use it to generate a series of exact solutions from a simple seed solution. The solutions generated by this approach are represented in terms of quasideterminants and belong to a noncommutative version of the Atiyah-Ward ansatz. In commutative limit, our results coincide with those by Corrigan, Fairlie, Yates and Goddard.

Notes on Exact Multi-Soliton Solutions of Noncommutative Integrable Hierarchies

We study exact multi-soliton solutions of integrable hierarchies on noncommutative space-times which are represented in terms of quasi-determinants of Wronski matrices by Etingof, Gelfand and Retakh. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the multi-soliton solutions and found that the asymptotic configurations in soliton scattering process can be all the same as commutative ones, that is, the configuration of N-soliton solution has N isolated localized energy densities and the each solitary wave-packet preserves its shape and velocity in the scattering process. The phase shifts are also the same as commutative ones. Furthermore noncommutative toroidal Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy is introduced and the exact multi-soliton solutions are given.

Noncommutative Ward's Conjecture and Integrable Systems

Noncommutative Ward's conjecture is a noncommutative version of the original Ward's conjecture which says that almost all integrable equations can be obtained from anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations by reduction. In this paper, we prove that wide class of noncommutative integrable equations in both (2+1)- and (1+1)-dimensions are actually reductions of noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations with finite gauge groups, which include noncommutative versions of Calogero-Bogoyavlenskii-Schiff eq., Zakharov system, Ward's chiral and topological chiral models, (modified) Korteweg-de Vries, Non-Linear Schroedinger, Boussinesq, N-wave, (affine) Toda, sine-Gordon, Liouville, Tzitzeica, (Ward's) harmonic map eqs., and so on. This would guarantee existence of twistor description of them and the corresponding physical situations in N=2 string theory, and lead to fruitful applications to noncommutative integrable systems and string theories. Some integrable aspects of them are also discussed.

On Reductions of Noncommutative Anti-Self-Dual Yang-Mills Equations

In this paper, we show that various noncommutative integrable equations can be derived from noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations in the split signature, which include noncommutative versions of Korteweg-de Vries, Non-Linear Schroedinger, N-wave, Davey-Stewartson and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. U(1) part of gauge groups for the original Yang-Mills equations play crucial roles in noncommutative extension of Mason-Sparling's celebrated discussion. The present results would be strong evidences for noncommutative Ward's conjecture and imply that these noncommutative integrable equations could have the corresponding physical pictures such as reduced configurations of D0-D4 brane systems in open N=2 string theories. Possible applications to the D-brane dynamics are also discussed.

Noncommutative Solitons and D-branes

This thesis is designed for a comprehensive review of noncommutative (BPS) solitons with applications to D-brane dynamics including our works. We focus on noncommutative instantons and monopoles and study various aspects of the exact solutions by using Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) and Nahm constructions. Finally we propose noncommutative extensions of integrable systems and soliton theories in lower dimensions in collaboration with Kouichi Toda, which would pioneer a new study area of integrable systems. Appendix is devoted to a brief and systematic review of formal aspects of ADHM/Nahm construction and Nahm transformation on commutative spaces. This article is also a step to a comprehensive review of ADHM/Nahm construction on both commutative and noncommutative spaces. Comments are welcome.
