Magnetic structure of Tb3RuO7 possessing alternating-bond spin-3/2 Ru chains in a nonuniform internal magnetic field: appearance of a partially disordered state

We report on the magnetic structures of Tb3RuO7 and Nd3RuO7 determined from powder neutron-diffraction experiments. In Tb3RuO7, alternating-bond spin-3/2 Ru1-Ru2 chains are formed. The Ru1 and Ru2 moments are ordered and disordered (paramagnetic), respectively, below 15 K. This result indicates the appearance of a partially disordered (PD) state, although the two Ru sites are very similar to each other. In Nd3RuO7, the Ru1 and Ru2 ions form independent uniform chains. Both the Ru1 and Ru2 moments are ordered below 17.5 K. Probably, the main source of the PD state in Tb3RuO7 is the magnetic frustration in the exchange interactions. The internal magnetic field generated by the Tb ordered moments at the Ru1 sites is different from that at the Ru2 sites. We speculate that the different (nonuniform) internal magnetic field enhances the difference in the properties between the Ru1 and Ru2 moments.

Data-driven determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters and their uncertainties: The case of the zigzag-chain compound KCu$_4$P$_3$O$_{12}$

We propose a data-driven technique to estimate the spin Hamiltonian, including uncertainty, from multiple physical quantities. Using our technique, an effective model of KCu$_4$P$_3$O$_{12}$ is determined from the experimentally observed magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curves with various temperatures under high magnetic fields. An effective model, which is the quantum Heisenberg model on a zigzag chain with eight spins having $J_1= -8.54 \pm 0.51 \{\rm meV}$, $J_2 = -2.67 \pm 1.13 \{\rm meV}$, $J_3 = -3.90 \pm 0.15 \{\rm meV}$, and $J_4 = 6.24 \pm 0.95 \{\rm meV}$, describes these measured results well. These uncertainties are successfully determined by the noise estimation. The relations among the estimated magnetic interactions or physical quantities are also discussed. The obtained effective model is useful to predict hard-to-measure properties such as spin gap, spin configuration at the ground state, magnetic specific heat, and magnetic entropy.

Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Rb-NMR study of the quasi-one dimensional competing spin-chain compound Rb2Cu2Mo3O12

Rb-NMR study has been performed on the quasi-one dimensional competing spin chain Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions on nearest neighboring and next nearest neighboring spins, respectively. The system changes from a gapped ground state at zero field to the gapless state at H_C \simeq 2 T, where the existence of magnetic order below 1 K was demonstrated by a broadening of NMR spectrum, associated with a critical divergence of 1/T_1. In higher temperature region, 1/T_1 showed a power-law type temperature dependence, from which the field dependence of Luttinger parameter K was obtained and compared with theoretical calculations based on the spin nematic Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid (TLL) state.

Magnetism of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer compound CrVMoO$_7$ having an antiferromagnetically ordered state

We measured magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering of CrVMoO$_7$ powder. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 26.5 \pm 0.8$ K. We consider that the probable spin model for CrVMoO$_7$ is an interacting antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer model. We evaluated the intradimer interaction $J$ to be $25 \pm 1$ K and the effective interdimer interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ to be $8.8 \pm 1$ K. CrVMoO$_7$ is a rare spin dimer compound that shows an antiferromagnetically ordered state at atmospheric pressure and zero magnetic field. The magnitude of ordered moments is $0.73(2) μ_{\rm B}$. It is much smaller than a classical value $\sim 3 μ_{\rm B}$. Longitudinal-mode magnetic excitations may be observable in single crystalline CrVMoO$_7$.

Magnetism of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramer compound CuInVO$_5$

We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization of CuInVO$_5$. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 2.7$ K. We observed a $\frac{1}{2}$ quantum magnetization plateau above 30 T at 1.3 K. We show that the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramers with $J_1 = 240 \pm 20$ and $J_2 = -142 \pm 10$ K for the intratetramer interactions.

Magnetic State of the Geometrically Frustrated Quasi-One-Dimensional Spin System Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$ Studied by Thermal Conductivity

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the geometrically frustrated quasi-onedimensional spin system Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$ in magnetic fields. A contribution of the thermal conductivity due to spins has been observed in the thermal conductivity along the spin chains. The thermal conductivity due to phonons, $κ_{\rm phonon}$, has been found to decrease by the application of a magnetic field, which has been explained as being due to the reduction in the spin gap originating from the spin-singlet dimers. Moreover, it has been found that $κ_{\rm phonon}$ increases with increasing field in high fields above ~7 T at low temperatures. This suggests the existence of a novel field-induced spin state and is discussed in terms of the possible spin-chirality ordering in a frustrated Mott insulator.

Magnetic excitations of the spin-1/2 tetramer substance Cu$_2$$^{114}$Cd$^{11}$B$_2$O$_6$ obtained by inelastic neutron scattering experiments

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Cu$_2$$^{114}$Cd$^{11}$B$_2$O$_6$ powder. The magnetic excitations at low temperatures are similar to those of the interacting spin-1/2 tetramers in the ordered state. The weak excitations existing above 3 meV suggest that the Higgs mode appears in Cu$_2$CdB$_2$O$_6$ at ambient pressure and zero magnetic field. We evaluated $J_1 = 27.3 \pm 1.0$ and $J_2 = -14.0 \pm 1.4$ meV for the intra-tetramer interactions and $J_3 = -0.4 \pm 0.2$ and $J_4 = 1.4 \pm 0.2$ meV for the inter-tetramer interactions. The spin gap in the isolated spin tetramer was calculated to be 1.6 meV, which is less than the effective inter-tetramer interaction value ($3.6 \pm 0.8$ meV). Therefore, antiferromagnetic long-range order is possible, although the ground state of the isolated spin tetramer is the spin-singlet state. We discuss the temperature dependence of the magnetic excitations.

Magnetic structure of the spin-1/2 frustrated quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu3Mo2O9: Appearance of a partial disordered state

We investigated the crystal and magnetic structures of the spin-1/2 frustrated antiferromagnet Cu3Mo2O9 in which the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic chains and dimers. The space group at room temperature has been reported to be orthorhombic Pnma (No. 62). We infer that the space group above TN = 7.9 K is monoclinic P2_1/m (No. 11) from the observation of reflections forbidden in Pnma in x-ray powder diffraction experiments at room temperature. We determined the magnetic structure of Cu3Mo2O9 in neutron powder diffraction experiments. Magnetic moments on dimer sites lie in the ac planes. The magnitudes are 0.50 - 0.74 mu_B. Moments on chain sites may exist but the magnitudes are very small. The magnetic structure indicates that a partial disordered state is realized. We consider the origin of the magnetic structure, weak ferromagnetism, and electric polarization.

Direct observation of the ground state of a 1/3 quantum magnetization plateau in SrMn$_3$P$_4$O$_{14}$ using neutron diffraction measurements

We can directly investigate the ground state in magnetization-plateau fields (plateau ground state) using neutron diffraction measurements. We performed neutron diffraction measurements on the spin-5/2 trimer substance SrMn$_3$P$_4$O$_{14}$ in magnetization-plateau fields. The integrated intensities of magnetic reflections calculated using an expectation value of each spin in a plateau ground state of an isolated-trimer model agree well with those obtained experimentally in the magnetization-plateau fields. We succeeded in direct observation of a plateau ground state in SrMn$_3$P$_4$O$_{14}$.

Ground state of the competing spin chain Cs2Cu2Mo3O12

The high-field ground state of the competing-spin-chain compound Cs2Cu2Mo3O12 with the ferromagnetic first-nearest-neighbor J1=-93 K and the antiferromagnetic second-nearest-neighbor J2 = +33 K was investigated by 133Cs-NMR. A divergence of T1-1 and a peak-splitting in spectra were observed at TN = 1.85 K, indicating the existence of a field-induced long range magnetic order. In the paramagnetic region above 4 K, T1-1 showed a power-law temperature dependence T2K-1. The exponent K was strongly field-dependent, suggesting the possibility of the spin-nematic Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid state.

Spiral magnetic structure in spin-5/2 frustrated trimerized chains in SrMn3P4O14

We study a spin-5/2 antiferromagnetic trimerized chain substance SrMn3P4O14 using neutron powder diffraction experiments. The coplanar spiral magnetic structure appears below T_N1 = 2.2(1) K. Values of several magnetic structure parameters change rapidly at T_N2 = 1.75(5) K, indicating another phase transition, although the magnetic structures above and below T_N2 are the qualitatively same. The spiral magnetic structure can be explained by frustration between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in the trimerized chains.

Negative magnetization of Li2Ni2Mo3O12 having a spin system composed of distorted honeycomb lattices and linear chains

We study themagnetism of a spin-1 substance Li2Ni2Mo3O12. The spin system consists of distorted honeycomb lattices and linear chains of Ni2+ spins. Li+ ions enter about 25% and 50% of the honeycomb and chain Ni sites, respectively, creating disorder in both spin subsystems. A magnetic phase transition occurs at Tc = 8.0 K in the zero magnetic field. In low magnetic fields, the magnetization increases rapidly below Tc, decreases below 7 K, and finally becomes negative at low temperatures. We determine the magnetic structure using neutron powder diffraction results. The honeycomb lattices and linear chains show antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range order, respectively. We investigate static and dynamic magnetic properties using the local probe technique of muon spin relaxation. We discuss the origin of the negative magnetization.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-5/2 antiferromagnetic trimer substance SrMn3P4O14

A quantum-mechanical 1/3 magnetization plateau and magnetic long-range order appear in the large-spin (5/2) substance SrMn3P4O14. Magnetization results of SrMn3P4O14 can be explained by the spin-5/2 isolated antiferromagnetic linear trimer with the intra-trimer interaction ($J_1$) value of 4.0 K. In the present study, to confirm the spin system, we performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments of SrMn3P4O14 powders. We observed plural magnetic excitations. The peak positions are 0.46, 0.68, and 1.02 meV. Constant-Q-scan spectra at several Q values (magnitude of the scattering vector) indicate that the dispersion is weak. The weak dispersion indicates that the excitations are transitions between discrete energy levels. Our INS results are consistent with results expected in the trimer model. We evaluated the J1 value as 0.29 meV (3.4 K) without considering the other interactions.

Electric polarization induced by Neel order without magnetic superlattice: experimental study of Cu3Mo2O9 and numerical study of a small spin cluster

We clarify that the antiferromagnetic order in the distorted tetrahedral quasi-one dimensional spin system induces electric polarizations. In this system, the effects of the low dimensionality and the magnetic frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We obtain the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram in Cu3Mo2O9 by studying the dielectric constant and the spontaneous electric polarization. Around the tricritical point at 10 T and 8 K, the change of the direction in the electric polarization causes a colossal magnetocapacitance. We calculate the charge redistribution in the small spin cluster consisting of two magnetic tetrahedra to demonstrate the electric polarization induced by the antiferromagnetism.

Successive phase transitions to antiferromagnetic and weak-ferromagnetic long-range orders in quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$

Investigation of the magnetism of Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$ single crystal, which has antiferromagnetic (AF) linear chains interacting with AF dimers, reveals an AF second-order phase transition at $T_{\rm N} = 7.9$ K. Although weak ferromagnetic-like behavior appears at lower temperatures in low magnetic fields, complete remanent magnetization cannot be detected down to 0.5 K. However, a jump is observed in the magnetization below weak ferromagnetic (WF) phase transition at $T_{\rm c} \simeq 2.5$ K when a tiny magnetic field along the a axis is reversed, suggesting that the coercive force is very weak. A component of magnetic moment parallel to the chain forms AF long-range order (LRO) below $T_{\rm N}$, while a perpendicular component is disordered above $T_{\rm c}$ at zero magnetic field and forms WF-LRO below $T_{\rm c}$. Moreover, the WF-LRO is also realized with applying magnetic fields even between $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm N}$. These results are explainable by both magnetic frustration among symmetric exchange interactions and competition between symmetric and asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interactions.

Coexistence of a nearly spin-singlet state and antiferromagnetic long-range order in quantum spin system Cu$_2$CdB$_2$O$_6$

A 1/2 magnetization plateau in magnetic fields above 23 T and antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range order (AFLRO) in low fields were found in Cu$_2$CdB$_2$O$_6$. Experimental results agree with quantum Monte Carlo results for an expected spin system. There are two kinds of Cu sites [Cu(1) and Cu(2)], which are located adjacent to each other. Unexpectedly, spins on the Cu(1) and Cu(2) sites are in a nearly spin-singlet state and form AFLRO, respectively, although interactions between the Cu(1) and Cu(2) spins cannot be ignored. Cu$_2$CdB$_2$O$_6$ is the first material which shows such coexistence in an atomic scale.

Confirmation of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg system with ferromagnetic first-nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic second-nearest-neighbor interactions in Rb${}_{2}$Cu${}_{2}$Mo${}_{3}$O${}_{12}$

We have investigated magnetic properties of Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ powder. Temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and magnetic-field dependence of magnetization have shown that this cuprate is a model compound of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg system with ferromagnetic first-nearest-neighbor (1NN) and antiferromagnetic second-nearest-neighbor (2NN) competing interactions (competing system). Values of the 1NN and 2NN interactions are estimated as $J_1 = -138$ K and $J_2 = 51$ K ($α\equiv J_2 / J_1 = -0.37$). This value of $α$ suggests that the ground state is a spin-singlet incommensurate state. In spite of relatively large $J_1$ and $J_2$, no magnetic phase transition appears down to 2 K, while an antiferromagnetic transition occurs in other model compounds of the competing system with ferromagnetic 1NN interaction. For that reason, Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ is an ideal model compound to study properties of the incommensurate ground state that are unconfirmed experimentally.
