Revisiting the Aretakis constants and instability in two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetimes

We discuss dynamics of massive Klein-Gordon fields in two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetimes ($AdS_2$), in particular conserved quantities and non-modal instability on the future Poincaré horizon called, respectively, the Aretakis constants and the Aretakis instability. We find out the geometrical meaning of the Aretakis constants and instability in a parallel-transported frame along a null geodesic, i.e., some components of the higher-order covariant derivatives of the field in the parallel-transported frame are constant or unbounded at the late time, respectively. Because $AdS_2$ is maximally symmetric, any null hypersurfaces have the same geometrical properties. Thus, if we prepare parallel-transported frames along any null hypersurfaces, we can show that the same instability emerges not only on the future Poincaré horizon but also on any null hypersurfaces. This implies that the Aretakis instability in $AdS_2$ is the result of singular behaviors of the higher-order covariant derivatives of the fields on the whole $AdS$ infinity, rather than a blow-up on a specific null hypersurface. It is also discussed that the Aretakis constants and instability are related to the conformal Killing tensors. We further explicitly demonstrate that the Aretakis constants can be derived from ladder operators constructed from the spacetime conformal symmetry.

Towards rotating non-circular black holes in string-inspired gravity

We study stationary slowly rotating black holes, up to quadratic order in the spin angular momentum, in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity and shift symmetric Einstein scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity, as models of string-inspired gravities. These gravity theories modify general relativity by introducing dynamical scalar fields coupled with curvature invariants. We show that the linear time dependence of the scalar fields is allowed from the stationarity of the effective stress energy tensors. However, these time dependent scalar fields yield singular behavior of the metric functions at the black hole horizons, or they are incompatible with the stationarity of the spacetimes. Thus, these gravity theories admit only known solutions as regular stationary solutions. Our results suggest the non-existence of rotating non-circular black holes in these gravity theories.

Semi-analytic expressions for quasinormal modes of slowly rotating Kerr black holes

We provide semi-analytic expressions for quasinormal mode frequencies of slowly rotating Kerr black holes to the quadratic order in the rotation parameter. We apply the parametrized black hole quasinormal mode ringdown formalism to the Chandrasekhar-Detweiler equation and the Sasaki-Nakamura equation instead of the Teukolsky equation, and compare our result with the previous numerical calculations.

Distinguishing black holes from horizonless objects through the excitation of resonances during inspiral

How well is the vacuum Kerr geometry a good description of the dark, compact objects in our universe? Precision measurements of accreting matter in the deep infrared and gravitational-wave measurements of coalescing objects are finally providing answers to this question. Here, we study the possibility of resonant excitation of the modes of the central object -- taken to be very compact but horizonless -- during an extreme-mass-ratio inspiral. We show that for very compact objects resonances are indeed excited. However, the impact of such excitation on the phase of the gravitational-wave signal is negligible, since resonances are crossed very quickly during inspiral.

Parametrized black hole quasinormal ringdown. II. Coupled equations and quadratic corrections for nonrotating black holes

Linear perturbations of spherically symmetric spacetimes in general relativity are described by radial wave equations, with potentials that depend on the spin of the perturbing field. In previous work we studied the quasinormal mode spectrum of spacetimes for which the radial potentials are slightly modified from their general relativistic form, writing generic small modifications as a power-series expansion in the radial coordinate. We assumed that the perturbations in the quasinormal frequencies are linear in some perturbative parameter, and that there is no coupling between the perturbation equations. In general, matter fields and modifications to the gravitational field equations lead to coupled wave equations. Here we extend our previous analysis in two important ways: we study second-order corrections in the perturbative parameter, and we address the more complex (and realistic) case of coupled wave equations. We highlight the special nature of coupling-induced corrections when two of the wave equations have degenerate spectra, and we provide a ready-to-use recipe to compute quasinormal modes. We illustrate the power of our parametrization by applying it to various examples, including dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, Horndeski gravity and an effective field theory-inspired model.

Sequence to Sequence with Attention for Influenza Prevalence Prediction using Google Trends

Early prediction of the prevalence of influenza reduces its impact. Various studies have been conducted to predict the number of influenza-infected people. However, these studies are not highly accurate especially in the distant future such as over one month. To deal with this problem, we investigate the sequence to sequence (Seq2Seq) with attention model using Google Trends data to assess and predict the number of influenza-infected people over the course of multiple weeks. Google Trends data help to compensate the dark figures including the statistics and improve the prediction accuracy. We demonstrate that the attention mechanism is highly effective to improve prediction accuracy and achieves state-of-the art results, with a Pearson correlation and root-mean-square error of 0.996 and 0.67, respectively. However, the prediction accuracy of the peak of influenza epidemic is not sufficient, and further investigation is needed to overcome this problem.

Stability analysis of black holes by the $S$-deformation method for coupled systems

We propose a simple method to prove the linear mode stability of a black hole when the perturbed field equations take the form of a system of coupled Schrödinger equations. The linear mode stability of the spacetime is guaranteed by the existence of an appropriate $S$-deformation. Such an $S$-deformation is related to the Riccati transformation of a solution to the Schrödinger system with zero energy. We apply this formalism to some examples and numerically study their stability.

Stability of Squashed Kaluza-Klein Black Holes

The stability of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes is studied. The squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole looks like five dimensional black hole in the vicinity of horizon and four dimensional Minkowski spacetime with a circle at infinity. In this sense, squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes can be regarded as black holes in the Kaluza-Klein spacetimes. Using the symmetry of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes, $SU(2)\times U(1)\simeq U(2)$, we obtain master equations for a part of the metric perturbations relevant to the stability. The analysis based on the master equations gives a strong evidence for the stability of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes. Hence, the squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes deserve to be taken seriously as realistic black holes in the Kaluza-Klein spacetime.

Robustness of the $S$-deformation method for black hole stability analysis

The $S$-deformation method is a useful way to show the linear mode stability of a black hole when the perturbed field equation takes the form of the Schrödinger equation. While previous works where many explicit examples are studied suggest that this method works well, general discussion is not given yet explicitly. In this paper, we show the existence of a regular $S$-deformation when a black hole spacetime is stable under some reasonable assumptions. This $S$-deformation is constructed from a solution of a differential equation. We also show that the boundary condition for the differential equation which corresponds to a regular $S$-deformation has a one-parameter degree of freedom with a finite range. This is the reason why any fine-tune technique is not needed to find $S$-deformation numerically.

Stability analysis of Schwarzschild black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity

Dynamical Chern-Simons gravity has an interesting feature that the parity violating term exists, and the coupling is determined by a dynamical scalar field. When the spacetime has spherical symmetry, the parity violating term vanishes, and then the metric of the Schwarzschild spacetime with vanishing scalar field is an exact solution of dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. The effect of the Chern-Simons coupling appears in the study of perturbation around the Schwarzschild spacetime. Due to the parity violating term, the odd parity metric perturbation and the perturbed scalar field are coupled, and the perturbed field equations take the form of the coupled system of the Schrödinger equations. We prove linear mode stability for a generic massive scalar.

General first-order mass ladder operators for Klein-Gordon fields

We study the ladder operator on scalar fields, mapping a solution of the Klein-Gordon equation onto another solution with a different mass, when the operator is at most first order in derivatives. Imposing the commutation relation between the d'Alembertian, we obtain the general condition for the ladder operator, which contains a non-trivial case which was not discussed in the previous work [V. Cardoso, T. Houri and M. Kimura, Phys.Rev.D 96, 024044 (2017), arXiv:1706.07339]. We also discuss the relation with supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

A simple test for stability of black hole by $S$-deformation

We study a sufficient condition to prove the stability of a black hole when the master equation for linear perturbation takes the form of the Schrödinger equation. If the potential contains a small negative region, usually, the $S$-deformation method was used to show the non-existence of unstable mode. However, in some cases, it is hard to find an appropriate deformation function analytically because the only way known so far to find it is a try-and-error approach. In this paper, we show that it is easy to find a regular deformation function by numerically solving the differential equation such that the deformed potential vanishes everywhere, when the spacetime is stable. Even if the spacetime is almost marginally stable, our method still works. We also discuss a simple toy model which can be solved analytically, and show the condition for the non-existence of a bound state is the same as that for the existence of a regular solution for the differential equation in our method. From these results, we conjecture that our criteria is also a necessary condition.

Mass Ladder Operators from Spacetime Conformal Symmetry

Ladder operators can be useful constructs, allowing for unique insight and intuition. In fact, they have played a special role in the development of quantum mechanics and field theory. Here, we introduce a novel type of ladder operators, which map a scalar field onto another massive scalar field. We construct such operators, in arbitrary dimensions, from closed conformal Killing vector fields, eigenvectors of the Ricci tensor. As an example, we explicitly construct these objects in anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS) and show that they exist for masses above the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound. Starting from a regular seed solution of the massive Klein-Gordon equation (KGE), mass ladder operators in AdS allow one to build a variety of regular solutions with varying boundary condition at spatial infinity. We also discuss mass ladder operator in the context of spherical harmonics, and the relation between supersymmetric quantum mechanics and so-called Aretakis constants in an extremal black hole.

A Note on Geodesics in Hayward Metric

We study timelike and null geodesics in a non-singular black hole metric proposed by Hayward. The metric contains an additional length-scale parameter $\ell$ and approaches the Schwarzschild metric at large radii while approaches a constant at small radii so that the singularity is resolved. We tabulate the various critical values of $\ell$ for timelike and null geodesics: the critical values for the existence of horizon, marginally stable circular orbit and photon sphere. We find the photon sphere exists even if the horizon is absent and two marginally stable circular orbits appear if the photon sphere is absent and a stable circular orbit for photons exists for a certain range of $\ell$. We visualize the image of a black hole and find that blight rings appear even if the photon sphere is absent.

Large X-ray Flares on Stars Detected with MAXI/GSC: A Universal Correlation between the Duration of a Flare and its X-ray Luminosity

23 giant flares from 13 active stars (eight RS CVn systems, one Algol system, three dMe stars and one YSO) were detected during the first two years of our all-sky X-ray monitoring with the gas propotional counters (GSC) of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). The observed parameters of all of these MAXI/GSC flares are found to be at the upper ends for stellar flares with the luminosity of 10^(31-34) ergs s-1 in the 2-20 keV band, the emission measure of 10^(54-57) cm-3, the e-folding time of 1 hour to 1.5 days, and the total radiative energy released during the flare of 10^(34-39) ergs. Notably, the peak X-ray luminosity of 5(3-9)*10^33 ergs s-1 in the 2-20 keV band was detected in one of the flares on II Peg, which is one of the, or potentially the, largest ever observed in stellar flares. X-ray flares were detected from GT Mus, V841 Cen, SZ Psc, and TWA-7 for the first time in this survey. Whereas most of our detected sources are multiple-star systems, two of them are single stars (YZ CMi and TWA-7). Among the stellar sources within 100 pc distance, the MAXI/GSC sources have larger rotation velocities than the other sources. This suggests that the rapid rotation velocity may play a key role in generating large flares. Combining the X-ray flare data of nearby stars and the sun, taken from literature and our own data, we discovered a universal correlation of tau~L_X^0.2 for the flare duration tau and the intrinsic X-ray luminosity L_X in the 0.1-100 keV band, which holds for 5 and 12 orders of magnitude in tau and L_X, respectively. The MAXI/GSC sample is located at the highest ends on the correlation.

Infinite efficiency of collisional Penrose process: Can over-spinning Kerr geometry be the source of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos ?

The origin of the ultra-high-energy particles we receive on the Earth from the outer space such as EeV cosmic rays and PeV neutrinos remains an enigma. All mechanisms known to us currently make use of electromagnetic interaction to accelerate charged particles. In this paper we propose a mechanism exclusively based on gravity rather than electromagnetic interaction. We show that it is possible to generate ultra-high-energy particles starting from particles with moderate energies using the collisional Penrose process in an overspinning Kerr spacetime transcending the Kerr bound only by an infinitesimal amount, i.e., with the Kerr parameter $a=M(1+ε)$, where we take the limit $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. We consider two massive particles starting from rest at infinity that collide at $r=M$ with divergent center-of-mass energy and produce two massless particles. We show that massless particles produced in the collision can escape to infinity with the ultra-high energies exploiting the collisional Penrose process with the divergent efficiency $η\sim {1}/{\sqrtε} \rightarrow \infty$. Assuming the isotropic emission of massless particles in the center-of-mass frame of the colliding particles, we show that half of the particles created in the collisions escape to infinity with the divergent energies. To a distant observer, ultra-high-energy particles appear to originate from a bright spot which is at the angular location $ξ\sim {2M}/{r_{obs}}$ with respect to the singularity on the side which is rotating towards the observer. We show that the anisotropy in emission in the center-of-mass frame, which is dictated by the differential cross-section of underlying particle physics process, leaves a district signature on the spectrum of ultra-high-energy massless particles. Thus, it provides a unique probe into fundamental particle physics.

The First MAXI/SSC Catalog of X-ray Sources in 0.7--7.0~keV

We present the first source catalog of the Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC) of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) mission on the International Space Station, using the 45-month data from 2010 August to 2014 April in 0.7--7.0~keV bands. Sources are searched for in two energy bands, 0.7--1.85~keV (soft) and 1.85--7.0~keV (hard), the limiting sensitivity of 3 and 4~mCrab are achieved and 140 and 138 sources are detected in the soft and hard energy bands, respectively. Combining the two energy bands, 170 sources are listed in the MAXI/SSC catalog. All but 2 sources are identified with 22 galaxies including AGNs, 29 cluster of galaxies, 21 supernova remnants, 75 X-ray binaries, 8 stars, 5 isolated pulsars, and 9 non-categorized objects. Comparing the soft-band fluxes at the brightest end in our catalog with the ROSAT survey, which was performed about 20 years ago, 10\% of the cataloged sources are found to have changed the flux since the ROSAT era.

Charged black strings in a five-dimensional Kasner universe

We construct time-dependent charged black string solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. In the far region, the spacetime approaches a five-dimensional Kasner universe with a expanding three-dimensional space and a shrinking extra dimension. Near the event horizon, the spacetime is approximately static and has a smooth event horizon. We also study the motion of test particles around the black string and show the existence of quasi-circular orbits. Finally, we briefly discuss the stability of this spacetime.
