The Łojasiewicz-Simon inequality related to grain boundary motion and its applications

In this paper, we study the Łojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for the mathematical model of grain boundary motion. We first derive a curve shortening equation with time-dependent mobility, which guarantees the energy dissipation law for the grain boundary energy, including the difference between orientations of the constituent grains as a state variable. Next, we discuss the Łojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for the grain boundary energy. Finally, we give applications of the inequality to the energy.

Long-time asymptotics of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations with inhomogeneous diffusion and natural boundary conditions

In this paper, we study the long-time asymptotics for nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations with spatial inhomogeneous diffusion, based on the law of energy dissipation. First, we derive a priori positive lower and upper bounds for solutions of the equations. Next, we give a sufficient condition for deriving the exponential decay of the dissipation function. Finally, we investigate whether the given sufficient condition is essential or not by numerical computation.

Long-time behavior of free energy in the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation

We study the asymptotic behavior of Fokker-Planck equations with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinear diffusion, based on the energy dissipation law. First, we consider the Fokker-Planck equation with porous-medium-type nonlinear diffusion that satisfies the energy dissipation law by introducing spatial inhomogeneity into the free energy. We obtain a result on the long-time behavior of the dissipation function for sufficiently large diffusion coefficients by extending the entropy dissipation method to the case of inhomogeneous diffusion.

Long-time asymptotic behavior of nonlinear Fokker-Planck type equations with periodic boundary conditions

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of a class of nonlinear Fokker-Planck type equations in a bounded domain with periodic boundary conditions. The system is motivated by our study of grain boundary dynamics, especially under the non-isothermal environments. To obtain the long time behavior of the solutions, in particular, the exponential decay, the kinematic structures of the systems are investigated using novel reinterpretation of the classical entropy method.

Local well-posedness of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck model

Noise or fluctuations play an important role in the modeling and understanding of the behavior of various complex systems in nature. Fokker-Planck equations are powerful mathematical tool to study behavior of such systems subjected to fluctuations. In this paper we establish local well-posedness result of a new nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. Such equations appear in the modeling of the grain boundary dynamics during microstructure evolution in the polycrystalline materials and obey special energy laws.

Nonlinear inhomogeneous Fokker-Planck models: energetic-variational structures and long time behavior

Inspired by the modeling of grain growth in polycrystalline materials, we consider a nonlinear Fokker-Plank model, with inhomogeneous diffusion and with variable mobility parameters. We develop large time asymptotic analysis of such nonstandard models by reformulating and extending the classical entropy method, under the assumption of periodic boundary condition. In addition, illustrative numerical tests are presented to highlight the essential points of the current analytical results and to motivate future analysis.

On the uniqueness of linear convection--diffusion equations with integral boundary conditions

This work contributes to an understanding of the domain size's effect on the existence and uniqueness of the linear convection--diffusion equation with integral-type boundary conditions, where boundary conditions depend non-locally on unknown solutions. Generally, the uniqueness result of this type of equation is unclear. In this preliminary study, a uniqueness result is verified when the domain is sufficiently large or small. The main approach has an advantage of transforming the integral boundary conditions into new Dirichlet boundary conditions so that we can obtain refined estimates, and the comparison theorem can be applied to the equations. Furthermore, we show a domain such that under different boundary data, the equation in this domain can have infinitely numerous solutions or no solution.

Long time behavior for a curvature flow of networks related to grain bundary motion with the effect of lattice misorientations

The mathematical model of grain boundary motion, including lattice misorientations' effect, is considered. When time-dependent lattice misorientations are state variables of the surface tension of the grain boundary, to ensure the energy dissipation law, one can obtain a curvature flow of networks with time-dependent mobilities. This paper studies the solvability and long-time asymptotic behavior of the curvature flow subjected to the Herring condition which ensures that the constituent grain boundary surface tensions are balanced at the triple junction.

Grain Growth and the Effect of Different Time Scales

Many technologically useful materials are polycrystals composed of a myriad of small monocrystalline grains separated by grain boundaries. Dynamics of grain boundaries play a crucial role in determining the grain structure and defining the materials properties across multiple scales. In this work, we consider two models for the motion of grain boundaries with the dynamic lattice misorientations and the triple junctions drag, and we conduct extensive numerical study of the models, as well as present relevant experimental results of grain growth in thin films.

A curve shortening equation with time-dependent mobility related to grain boundary motions

A curve shortening equation related to the evolution of grain boundaries is presented. This equation is derived from the grain boundary energy by applying the maximum dissipation principle. Gradient estimates and large time asymptotic behavior of solutions are considered. In the proof of these results, one key ingredient is a new weighted monotonicity formula that incorporates a time-dependent mobility.

A stochastic model of grain boundary dynamics: A Fokker-Planck perspective

Many technologically useful materials are polycrystals composed of small monocrystalline grains that are separated by grain boundaries of crystallites with different lattice orientations. The energetics and connectivities of the grain boundaries play an essential role in defining the effective properties of materials across multiple scales. In this paper we derive a Fokker-Planck model for the evolution of the planar grain boundary network. The proposed model considers anisotropic grain boundary energy which depends on lattice misorientation and takes into account mobility of the triple junctions, as well as independent dynamics of the misorientations. We establish long time asymptotics of the Fokker-Planck solution, namely the joint probability density function of misorientations and triple junctions, and closely related the marginal probability density of misorientations. Moreover, for an equilibrium configuration of a boundary network, we derive explicit local algebraic relations, a generalized Herring Condition formula, as well as formula that connects grain boundary energy density with the geometry of the grain boundaries that share a triple junction. Although the stochastic model neglects the explicit interactions and correlations among triple junctions, the considered specific form of the noise, under the fluctuation-dissipation assumption, provides partial information about evolution of a grain boundary network, and is consistent with presented results of extensive grain growth simulations.

Motion of grain boundaries with dynamic lattice misorientations and with triple junctions drag

Most technologically useful materials are polycrystalline microstructures composed of a myriad of small monocrystalline grains separated by grain boundaries. The energetics and connectivities of grain boundaries play a crucial role in defining the main characteristics of materials across a wide range of scales. In this work, we propose a model for the evolution of the grain boundary network with dynamic boundary conditions at the triple junctions, triple junctions drag, and with dynamic lattice misorientations. Using the energetic variational approach, we derive system of geometric differential equations to describe motion of such grain boundaries. Next, we relax curvature effect of the grain boundaries to isolate the effect of the dynamics of lattice misorientations and triple junctions drag, and we establish local well-posedness result for the considered model.

Gradient estimates for mean curvature flow with Neumann boundary conditions

We study the mean curvature flow of graphs both with Neumann boundary conditions and transport terms. We derive boundary gradient estimates for the mean curvature flow. As an application, the existence of the mean curvature flow of graphs is presented. A key argument is a boundary monotonicity formula of a Huisken type derived using reflected backward heat kernels. Furthermore, we provide regularity conditions for the transport terms.

Convergence of the Allen-Cahn equation with Neumann boundary conditions

We study a singular limit problem of the Allen-Cahn equation with Neumann boundary conditions and general initial data of uniformly bounded energy. We prove that the time-parametrized family of limit energy measures is Brakke's mean curvature flow with a generalized right angle condition on the boundary.

Hölder estimates for solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation with external forces

We study the interior Hölder regularity problem for weak solutions of the porous medium equation with external forces. Since the porous medium equation is the typical example of degenerate parabolic equations, Hölder regularity is a delicate matter and does not follow by classical methods. Caffrelli-Friedman, and Caffarelli-Vazquez-Wolansky showed Hölder regularity for the model equation without external forces. DiBenedetto and Friedman showed the Hölder continuity of weak solutions with some integrability conditions of the external forces but they did not obtain the quantitative estimates. The quantitative estimates are important for studying the perturbation problem of the porous medium equation. We obtain the scale invariant Hölder estimates for weak solutions of the porous medium equations with the external forces. As a particular case, we recover the well known Hölder estimates for the linear heat equation.
