Quantum gravity fluctuations flatten the Planck-scale Higgs potential

We investigate asymptotic safety of a toy model of a singlet-scalar extension of the Higgs sector including two real scalar fields under the impact of quantum-gravity fluctuations. Employing functional renormalization group techniques, we search for fixed points of the system which provide a tentative ultraviolet completion of the system. We find that in a particular regime of the gravitational parameter space the canonically marginal and relevant couplings in the scalar sector -- including the mass parameters -- become irrelevant at the ultraviolet fixed point. The infrared potential for the two scalars that can be reached from that fixed point is fully predicted and features no free parameters. In the remainder of the gravitational parameter space, the values of the quartic couplings in our model are predicted. In light of these results, we discuss whether the singlet-scalar could be a dark-matter candidate. Furthermore, we highlight how "classical scale invariance" in the sense of a flat potential of the scalar sector at the Planck scale could arise as a consequence of asymptotic safety.

Non-perturbative electroweak-scalegenesis on the test bench of dark matter detection

We revisit a recently proposed scale invariant extension of the standard model, in which the scalar bi-linear condensate in a strongly interacting hidden sector dynamically breaks scale symmetry, thereby triggering electroweak symmetry breaking. Relaxing the previously made assumption on $U(N_f)$ flavor symmetry we find that the presence of the would-be dark matter candidate opens a new annihilation process of dark matter at finite temperature, such that the model can satisfy stringent constraints of the future experiments of the dark matter direct detection.

Baryogenesis in false vacuum

The null result in the LHC may indicate that the standard model is not drastically modified up to very high scales such as the GUT/string scale. Having this in the mind, we suggest a novel leptogenesis scenario realized in the false vacuum of the Higgs field. If the Higgs field develops a large vacuum expectation value in the early universe, a lepton number violating process is enhanced, which we use for baryogenesis. To demonstrate the scenario, several models are discussed. For example, we show that the observed baryon asymmetry is successfully generated in the standard model with higher-dimensional operators.

Asymptotic safety of higher derivative quantum gravity non-minimally coupled with a matter system

We study asymptotic safety of models of the higher derivative quantum gravity with and without matter. The beta functions are derived by utilizing the functional renormalization group, and non-trivial fixed points are found. It turns out that all couplings in gravity sector, namely the cosmological constant, the Newton constant, and the $R^2$ and $R_{μν}^2$ coupling constants, are relevant in case of higher derivative pure gravity. For the Higgs-Yukawa model non-minimal coupled with higher derivative gravity, we find a stable fixed point at which the scalar-quartic and the Yukawa coupling constants become relevant. The relevant Yukawa coupling is crucial to realize the finite value of the Yukawa coupling constants in the standard model.

Gravitational wave from dark sector with dark pion

In this work, we investigate the spectra of gravitational waves produced by chiral symmetry breaking in dark quantum chromodynamics (dQCD) sector. The dark pion ($π$) can be a dark matter candidate as weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) or strongly interacting massive particle (SIMP). For a WIMP scenario, we introduce the dQCD sector coupled to the standard model (SM) sector with classical scale invariance and investigate the annihilation process of the dark pion via the $2π\to 2\,\text{SM}$ process. For a SIMP scenario, we investigate the $3π\to 2π$ annihilation process of the dark pion as a SIMP using chiral perturbation theory. We find that in the WIMP scenario the gravitational wave background spectra can be observed by future space gravitational wave antennas. On the other hand, when the dark pion is the SIMP dark matter with the constraints for the chiral perturbative limit and pion-pion scattering cross section, the chiral phase transition becomes crossover and then the gravitational waves are not produced.

Non-minimal coupling in Higgs-Yukawa model with asymptotically safe gravity

We study the fixed point structure of the Higgs-Yukawa model, with its scalar being non-minimally coupled to the asymptotically safe gravity, using the functional renormalization group. We have obtained the renormalization group equations for the cosmological and Newton constants, the scalar mass-squared and quartic coupling constant, and the Yukawa and non-minimal coupling constants, taking into account all the scalar, fermion, and graviton loops. We find that switching on the fermionic quantum fluctuations makes the non-minimal coupling constant irrelevant around the Gaussian-matter fixed point with the asymptotically safe gravity.

Gauge hierarchy problem in asymptotically safe gravity--the resurgence mechanism

The gauge hierarchy problem could find a solution within the scenario of asymptotic safety for quantum gravity. We discuss a "resurgence mechanism" where the running dimensionless coupling responsible for the Higgs scalar mass first decreases in the ultraviolet regime and subsequently increases in the infrared regime. A gravity induced large anomalous dimension plays a crucial role for the required "self-tuned criticality" in the ultraviolet regime beyond the Planck scale.

Scale genesis and gravitational wave in a classically scale invariant extension of the standard model

We assume that the origin of the electroweak (EW) scale is a gauge-invariant scalar-bilinear condensation in a strongly interacting non-abelian gauge sector, which is connected to the standard model via a Higgs portal coupling. The dynamical scale genesis appears as a phase transition at finite temperature, and it can produce a gravitational wave (GW) background in the early Universe. We find that the critical temperature of the scale phase transition lies above that of the EW phase transition and below few $O(100)$ GeV and it is strongly first-order. We calculate the spectrum of the GW background and find the scale phase transition is strong enough that the GW background can be observed by DECIGO.

Genesis of electroweak and dark matter scales from a bilinear scalar condensate

The condensation of scalar bilinear in a classically scale invariant strongly interacting hidden sector is used to generate the electroweak scale, where the excitation of the condensate is identified as dark matter. We formulate an effective theory for the condensation of the scalar bilinear and find in the self-consistent mean field approximation that the dark matter mass is of $O(1)$ TeV with the spin-independent elastic cross section off the nucleon slightly below the LUX upper bound.

Functional renormalization group study of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and density in an external magnetic field

In this study, we investigate the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite temperature and finite density in an external magnetic field using the functional renormalization group. We investigate the dependence of the position of the ultraviolet fixed point (UVFP) of the four-Fermi coupling constant on the temperature, density, and external magnetic field, and we obtain the chiral phase structure. The UVFP at low temperature and finite chemical potential oscillates in a small external magnetic field, which can be interpreted as the de Haas--van Alphen effect. We also obtain phase diagrams with complex structures, where the phase boundary moves back and forth as the external magnetic field increases in the low temperature and high density region.

The RG flow of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and density

We study the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and finite density by using the functional renormalization group. The RG flows of the four-fermi coupling constant in the NJL model are investigated. We obtain the chiral phase boundary in cases of the large-$N$ leading approximation and an improved approximation. The large-$N$ non-leading term at the vanishing temperature has a singularity at the fermi surface. We show that the quantum corrections by the large-$N$ non-leading term largely influence the phase boundary at the low temperature and high density region.

Scale and electroweak first-order phase transitions

We consider phase transitions in the standard model (SM) without the Higgs mass term, which is coupled through a Higgs portal term to an SM singlet, classically scale-invariant gauge sector with SM singlet scalar fields. At lower energies the gauge-invariant scalar bilinear in the hidden sector forms a condensate, dynamically creating a robust energy scale, which is transmitted through the Higgs portal term to the SM sector. A scale phase transition is a transition between phases with zero and nonzero condensates. An interplay between the EW and scale phase transitions is therefore expected. We find that in a certain parameter space both the electroweak (EW) and scale phase transitions can be a strong first-order phase transition. The result is obtained by means of an effective theory for the condensation of scalar bilinear in the mean field approximation.

Analysis of the Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in QCD at Finite Temperature and Density using the Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group

We analyze the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which is a chiral effective model of QCD by using the non-perturbative renormalization group at finite temperature and finite density. We discuss the chiral phase diagram in the model. We include the large-$N$ non-leading contribution in the beta function and discuss its effects for the phase boundary.
