Metastable ferromagnetic clusters in dissipative many-body systems of polar molecules

We investigate the effect of two-body loss due to chemical reactions on quantum magnetism of fermionic polar molecules in an optical lattice. We show that an interplay between dissipation and strong long-range interactions leads to formation of metastable ferromagnetic clusters. The spin states of clusters are controlled by interaction parameters and reflect the symmetry of interactions. The size of clusters strongly depends on the initial configuration of molecules due to Hilbert-space fragmentation during dissipative many-body dynamics. We construct an effective model to show the emergence of metastable states as quasi-dark states. Application to quantum simulation of the spin-$S$ Heisenberg model is discussed.

Observation of the Sign Reversal of the Magnetic Correlation in a Driven-Dissipative Fermi Gas in Double Wells

We report the observation of the sign reversal of the magnetic correlation from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic in a dissipative Fermi gas in double wells, utilizing the dissipation caused by on-site two-body losses in a controlled manner. We systematically measure dynamics of the nearest-neighbor spin correlation in an isolated double-well optical lattice, as well as a crossover from an isolated double-well lattice to a one-dimensional uniform lattice. In a wide range of lattice configurations over an isolated double-well lattice, we observe a ferromagnetic spin correlation, which is consistent with a Dicke type of correlation expected in the long-time limit. This work demonstrates the control of quantum magnetism in open quantum systems with dissipation.

Lindbladian Many-Body Localization

We discover a novel localization transition that alters the dynamics of coherence in disordered many-body spin systems subject to Markovian dissipation. The transition occurs in the middle spectrum of the Lindbladian super-operator whose eigenstates obey the universality of non-Hermitian random-matrix theory for weak disorder and exhibit localization of off-diagonal degrees of freedom for strong disorder. This Lindbladian many-body localization prevents many-body decoherence due to interactions and is conducive to robustness of the coherent dynamics characterized by the rigidity of the decay rate of coherence.

Embedding the Yang-Lee Quantum Criticality in Open Quantum Systems

The Yang-Lee edge singularity is a quintessential nonunitary critical phenomenon accompanied by anomalous scaling laws. However, an imaginary magnetic field involved in this critical phenomenon makes its physical implementation difficult. By invoking the quantum-classical correspondence to embed the Yang-Lee edge singularity in a quantum system with an ancilla qubit, we demonstrate a physical realization of the nonunitary quantum criticality in an open quantum system. Here the nonunitary criticality is identified with the singularity at an exceptional point caused by postselection of quantum measurement.

Universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids: Case study of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain

We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the massless regime with weak dissipation belongs to the universality class characterized by the complex-valued TL parameter, which is related to the complex generalization of the $c=1$ conformal field theory. As the dissipation strength increases, the values of the TL parameter obtained by the NH-DMRG begin to deviate from those obtained by the Bethe-ansatz analysis, indicating that the model becomes massive for strong dissipation. Our results can be tested with the two-component Bose-Hubbard system of ultracold atoms subject to two-body loss.

Kondo Effect in a Quantum Dot under Continuous Quantum Measurement

The backaction of quantum measurement on the Kondo effect in a quantum dot system is investigated by considering continuous projective measurement of singly occupied states of a quantum dot. We elucidate the qualitative feature of the Kondo effect under quantum measurement and determine effective Kondo temperature affected by the measurement. The Kondo resonance in the spectral function is suppressed when the measurement strength reaches the energy scale of the Kondo temperature without measurement. Through the spin susceptibility, we identify the generalized Kondo temperature under continuous quantum measurement. The measurement backaction changes the singularity in the spin susceptibility into a highly non-monotonic temperature dependence around the generalized Kondo temperature. The dependence of the generalized Kondo temperature on the measurement strength is quantitatively discussed.

Liouvillian Skin Effect: Slowing Down of Relaxation Processes without Gap Closing

It is highly nontrivial to what extent we can deduce the relaxation behavior of a quantum dissipative system from the spectral gap of the Liouvillian that governs the time evolution of the density matrix. We investigate the relaxation processes of a quantum dissipative system that exhibits the Liouvillian skin effect, which means that the eigenmodes of the Liouvillian are localized exponentially close to the boundary of the system, and find that the timescale for the system to reach a steady state depends not only on the Liouvillian gap $Δ$ but also on the localization length $ξ$ of the eigenmodes. In particular, we show that the longest relaxation time $τ$ that is maximized over initial states and local observables is given by $τ\sim Δ^{-1}(1+L/ξ)$ with $L$ being the system size. This implies that the longest relaxation time can diverge for $L \to \infty$ without gap closing.

Collective Excitations and Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Dissipative Fermionic Superfluids

We predict a new mechanism to induce collective excitations and a nonequilibrium phase transition of fermionic superfluids via a sudden switch-on of two-body loss, for which we extend the BCS theory to fully incorporate a change in particle number. We find that a sudden switch-on of dissipation induces an amplitude oscillation of the superfluid order parameter accompanied by a chirped phase rotation as a consequence of particle loss. We demonstrate that when dissipation is introduced to one of the two superfluids coupled via a Josephson junction, it gives rise to a nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition characterized by the vanishing dc Josephson current. The dissipation-induced collective modes and nonequilibrium phase transition can be realized with ultracold fermionic atoms subject to inelastic collisions.

$η$ Pairing of Light-Emitting Fermions: Nonequilibrium Pairing Mechanism at High Temperatures

Strongly interacting fermionic atoms are shown to develop $η$-pairing superfluid correlations in a nonequilibrium steady state in the presence of spontaneous emission of light from atoms. On the basis of the Hubbard model subject to spontaneous decay between internal spin states, we show that prohibition of radiative decay due to the Pauli exclusion principle and destructive interference between doublon-decay processes lead to nonequilibrium $η$ pairing. Because of the non-thermal nature of the steady state, pair correlations arise even from a completely uncorrelated infinite-temperature initial state, allowing coherent atom pairs to be formed at high temperatures. Experimental implementation with fermionic atoms in an optical lattice is discussed.

Exact Liouvillian Spectrum of a One-Dimensional Dissipative Hubbard Model

A one-dimensional dissipative Hubbard model with two-body loss is shown to be exactly solvable. We obtain an exact eigenspectrum of a Liouvillian superoperator by employing a non-Hermitian extension of the Bethe-ansatz method. We find steady states, the Liouvillian gap, and an exceptional point that is accompanied by the divergence of the correlation length. A dissipative version of spin-charge separation induced by the quantum Zeno effect is also demonstrated. Our result presents a new class of exactly solvable Liouvillians of open quantum many-body systems, which can be tested with ultracold atoms subject to inelastic collisions.

Tachyonic and Plasma Instabilities of $η$-Pairing States Coupled to Electromagnetic Fields

Cooper pairs featuring a nonzero center-of-mass crystal momentum ${\boldsymbol Q}=(π,π, \dots)$ and an off-diagonal long-range order ($η$-pairing states) constitute exact eigenstates of a Hubbard model [C. N. Yang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 2144 (1989)]. Here we show that the $η$-pairing states are rendered dynamically unstable via coupling to dynamical electromagnetic fields. The instability is caused by "tachyonic" electromagnetic fields and unstable plasma modes for attractive and repulsive interactions, respectively. The typical time scale of the growth of the instability is of the order of femtoseconds for electron systems in solids, which places a strict bound on the lifetime of the $η$-pairing states. The decay of the $η$-pairing states leads to enhanced light emission with frequencies shifted from the Hubbard interaction strength for the repulsive case and unattenuated electromagnetic penetration for the attractive case.

Dynamical sign reversal of magnetic correlations in dissipative Hubbard models

In quantum magnetism, the virtual exchange of particles mediates an interaction between spins. Here, we show that an inelastic Hubbard interaction fundamentally alters the magnetism of the Hubbard model due to dissipation in spin-exchange processes, leading to sign reversal of magnetic correlations in dissipative quantum dynamics. This mechanism is applicable to both fermionic and bosonic Mott insulators, and can naturally be realized with ultracold atoms undergoing two-body inelastic collisions. The dynamical reversal of magnetic correlations can be detected by using a double-well optical lattice or quantum-gas microscopy, the latter of which facilitates the detection of the magnetic correlations in one-dimensional systems because of spin-charge separation. Our results open a new avenue toward controlling quantum magnetism by dissipation.

Wannier representation of Floquet topological states

A universal feature of topological insulators is that they cannot be adiabatically connected to an atomic limit, where individual lattice sites are completely decoupled. This property is intimately related to a topological obstruction to constructing a localized Wannier function from Bloch states of an insulator. Here we generalize this characterization of topological phases toward periodically driven systems. We show that nontrivial connectivity of hybrid Wannier centers in momentum space and time can characterize various types of topology in periodically driven systems, which include Floquet topological insulators, anomalous Floquet topological insulators with micromotion-induced boundary states, and gapless Floquet states realized with topological Floquet operators. In particular, nontrivial time dependence of hybrid Wannier centers indicates impossibility of continuous deformation of a driven system into an undriven insulator, and a topological Floquet operator implies an obstruction to constructing a generalized Wannier function which is localized in real and frequency spaces. Our results pave a way to a unified understanding of topological states in periodically driven systems as a topological obstruction in Floquet states.

Theory of Non-Hermitian Fermionic Superfluidity with a Complex-Valued Interaction

Motivated by recent experimental advances in ultracold atoms, we analyze a non-Hermitian (NH) BCS Hamiltonian with a complex-valued interaction arising from inelastic scattering between fermions. We develop a mean-field theory to obtain a NH gap equation for order parameters, which are different from the standard BCS ones due to the inequivalence of left and right eigenstates in the NH physics. We find unconventional phase transitions unique to NH systems: superfluidity shows reentrant behavior with increasing dissipation, as a consequence of non-diagonalizable exceptional points, lines, and surfaces in the quasiparticle Hamiltonian for weak attractive interactions. For strong attractive interactions, the superfluid gap never collapses but is enhanced by dissipation due to an interplay between the BCS-BEC crossover and the quantum Zeno effect. Our results lay the groundwork for studies of fermionic superfluidity subject to inelastic collisions.

Floquet chiral magnetic effect

A single Weyl fermion, which is prohibited in static lattice systems by the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem, is shown to be realized in a periodically driven three-dimensional lattice system with a topologically nontrivial Floquet unitary operator, manifesting the chiral magnetic effect. We give a topological classification of Floquet unitary operators in the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes for all dimensions, and use it to predict that all gapless surface states of topological insulators and superconductors can emerge in bulk quasienergy spectra in Floquet systems.

Non-Hermitian Kondo effect in ultracold alkaline-earth atoms

We investigate the Kondo effect in an open quantum system, motivated by recent experiments with ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms. Because of inelastic collisions and the associated atom losses, this system is described by a complex-valued Kondo interaction and provides a non-Hermitian extension of the Kondo problem. We show that the non-Hermiticity induces anomalous reversion of renormalization-group flows which violate the $g$-theorem due to non-unitarity and produce a quantum phase transition unique to non-Hermiticity. Furthermore, we exactly solve the non-Hermitian Kondo Hamiltonian using a generalized Bethe ansatz method and find the critical line consistent with the renormalization-group flow.

Breakdown of topological Thouless pumping in the strongly interacting regime

We elucidate the mechanism for instability of topological Thouless pumping in strongly interacting systems from a viewpoint of symmetry-protected topological phases. If the protecting symmetries of the underlying topological phases change between noninteracting fermions and a bosonic system in the strong coupling limit, the symmetry protection argument enforces a gap closing and thereby predicts a breakdown of the topological pumping. We also demonstrate that, even in the weakly interacting regime where the bulk topological pumping is still robust, the interaction effects manifest themselves in the edge density profiles, leading to a unique feature of the pumping in open boundary conditions. Furthermore, an extension of the above results indicates that an analog of an interaction-induced phase of Weyl semimetals can be realized in the setup of the topological pumping. Our results provide a systematic understanding for the stability of topological pumping against strong interactions, to which the conventional perturbative argument cannot be applied.

Spatial-Translation-Induced Discrete Time Crystals

A discrete time crystal is a phase unique to nonequilibrium systems, where discrete time translation symmetry is spontaneously broken. Most of conventional time crystals proposed so far rely on spontaneous breaking of on-site symmetries and their corresponding on-site symmetry operations. In this Letter, we propose a new time crystal dubbed "spatial-translation-induced discrete time crystal (STI-DTC)", which is realized by spatial translation and its symmetry breaking. Owing to the properties of spatial translation, in this new time crystal, various time crystal orders can emerge only by changing the filling but not changing the driving protocol. We demonstrate that local transport of charges or spins shows a nontrivial oscillation, enabling detection and applications of time crystal orders. Our proposal opens up a new avenue of realizing time crystal orders by spatial translation.
