The three-year shear catalog of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam SSP Survey

We present the galaxy shear catalog that will be used for the three-year cosmological weak gravitational lensing analyses using data from the Wide layer of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) Survey. The galaxy shapes are measured from the $i$-band imaging data acquired from 2014 to 2019 and calibrated with image simulations that resemble the observing conditions of the survey based on training galaxy images from the Hubble Space Telescope in the COSMOS region. The catalog covers an area of 433.48 deg$^2$ of the northern sky, split into six fields. The mean $i$-band seeing is 0.59 arcsec. With conservative galaxy selection criteria (e.g., $i$-band magnitude brighter than 24.5), the observed raw galaxy number density is 22.9 arcmin$^{-2}$, and the effective galaxy number density is 19.9 arcmin$^{-2}$. The calibration removes the galaxy property-dependent shear estimation bias to a level: $|δm|<9\times 10^{-3}$. The bias residual $δm$ shows no dependence on redshift in the range $0 1$ degree scales and will require mitigation during the inference of cosmological parameters using cosmic shear measurements.

HSC-XXL : Baryon budget of the 136 XXL Groups and Clusters

We present our determination of the baryon budget for an X-ray-selected XXL sample of 136 galaxy groups and clusters spanning nearly two orders of magnitude in mass ($M_{500}\sim 10^{13}-10^{15}M_\odot$) and the redshift range $0< z < 1$. Our joint analysis is based on the combination of HSC-SSP weak-lensing mass measurements, XXL X-ray gas mass measurements, and HSC and SDSS multiband photometry. We carry out a Bayesian analysis of multivariate mass-scaling relations of gas mass, galaxy stellar mass, stellar mass of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and soft-band X-ray luminosity, by taking into account the intrinsic covariance between cluster properties, selection effect, weak-lensing mass calibration, and observational error covariance matrix. The mass-dependent slope of the gas mass--total mass ($M_{500}$) relation is found to be $1.29_{-0.10}^{+0.16}$, which is steeper than the self-similar prediction of unity, whereas the slope of the stellar mass--total mass relation is shallower than unity, $0.85_{-0.09}^{+0.12}$. The BCG stellar mass weakly depends on cluster mass with a slope of $0.49_{-0.10}^{+0.11}$. The baryon, gas mass, and stellar mass fractions as a function of $M_{500}$ agree with the results from numerical simulations and previous observations. We successfully constrain the full intrinsic covariance of the baryonic contents. The BCG stellar mass shows the larger intrinsic scatter at a given halo total mass, followed in order by stellar mass and gas mass. We find a significant positive intrinsic correlation coefficient between total (and satellite) stellar mass and BCG stellar mass and no evidence for intrinsic correlation between gas mass and stellar mass. All the baryonic components show no redshift evolution.

H$α$ emission in the outskirts of galaxies at z=0.4

This paper reports detections of H$α$ emission and stellar continuum out to approximately 30 physical kpc, and H$α$ directionality in the outskirts of H$α$-emitting galaxies (H$α$ emitters) at $z=0.4$. This research adopts narrow-band selected H$α$ emitters at $z=0.4$ from the emission-line object catalog by Hayashi et al. (2020), which is based on data in the Deep and Ultradeep layers of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Deep narrow- and broad-band images of 8625 H$α$ emitters across 16.8 deg$^2$ enable us to construct deep composite emission-line and continuum images. The stacked images show diffuse H$α$ emission (down to $\sim5\times10^{-20}$ erg~s$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$arcsec$^{-2}$) and stellar continuum (down to $\sim5\times10^{-22}$ erg~s$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$A$^{-1}$arcsec$^{-2}$), extending beyond 10 kpc at stellar masses $>10^9$ M$_\odot$, parts of which may originate from stellar halos. Those radial profiles are broadly consistent with each other. In addition, we obtain a dependence of the H$α$ emission on the position angle because relatively higher H$α$ equivalent width has been detected along the minor-axis towards galaxy disks. While the H$α$ directionality could be attributed to biconical outflows, further research with hydrodynamic simulations is highly demanded to pin down the exact cause.

Cosmological inference from the emulator based halo model II: Joint analysis of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing and galaxy clustering from HSC-Y1 and SDSS

We present high-fidelity cosmology results from a blinded joint analysis of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing ($Δ\!Σ$) and projected galaxy clustering ($w_{\rm p}$) measured from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Year-1 (HSC-Y1) data and spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxy catalogs in the redshift range $0.15<z<0.7$. We define luminosity-limited samples of SDSS galaxies to serve as the tracers of $w_{\rm p}$ in three spectroscopic redshift bins, and as the lens samples for $Δ\!Σ$. For the $Δ\!Σ$ measurements, we select a single sample of 4 million source galaxies over 140 deg$^2$ from HSC-Y1 with photometric redshifts (photo-$z$) greater than 0.75, enabling a better handle of photo-$z$ errors by comparing the $Δ\!Σ$ amplitudes for the three lens redshift bins. For cosmological parameter inference, we use an input galaxy-halo connection model built on the {\tt Dark Emulator} package with a halo occupation distribution that includes nuisance parameters to marginalize over modeling uncertainties. We model the $Δ\!Σ$ and $w_{\rm p}$ measurements on scales from $R\simeq 3$ and $2\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$, respectively, up to $30\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ assuming a flat $Λ$CDM cosmology. With various tests using mock catalogs described in Miyatake et al. (2021), we show that any bias in the clustering amplitude $S_8\equiv σ_8(Ω_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}$ due to uncertainties in the galaxy-halo connection is less than $\sim50$\% of the statistical uncertainty of $S_8$, {\it unless} the assembly bias effect is unexpectedly large. Our best-fit models have $S_8=0.795^{+0.049}_{-0.042}$ (mode and 68\% credible interval) for the flat $Λ$CDM model; we find tighter constraints on the quantity $S_8(α=0.17)\equivσ_8(Ω_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.17} =0.745^{+0.039}_{-0.031}$. Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs). XVI. 69 New Quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0

We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0, drawn from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) imaging survey data. This is the 16th publication from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, and completes identification of all but the faintest candidates (i.e., i-band dropouts with zAB < 24 and y-band detections, and z-band dropouts with yAB < 24) with Bayesian quasar probability Pq > 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with Pq < 0.1 at z ~ 6.6, which we selected in an effort to completely cover the reddest point sources with simple color cuts. The number of high-z quasars discovered in SHELLQs has now grown to 162, including 23 type-II quasar candidates. This paper also presents identification of seven galaxies at 5.6 < z < 6.7, an [O III] emitter at z = 0.954, and 31 Galactic cool stars and brown dwarfs. High-z quasars and galaxies comprise 75 % and 16 % respectively of all the spectroscopic SHELLQs objects that pass our latest selection algorithm with the PDR3 photometry. That is, a total of 91 % of the objects lie at z > 5.6. This demonstrates that the algorithm has very high efficiency, even though we are probing an unprecedentedly low-luminosity population down to M1450 ~ -21 mag.

HSC Year 1 cosmology results with the minimal bias method: HSC$\times$BOSS galaxy-galaxy weak lensing and BOSS galaxy clustering

We present cosmological parameter constraints from a blinded joint analysis of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing, $Δ\!Σ(R)$, and projected correlation function, $w_\mathrm{p}(R)$, measured from the first-year HSC (HSC-Y1) data and SDSS spectroscopic galaxies over $0.15 0.75$ for the $Δ\!Σ$ measurements, selected based on their photometric redshifts. For theoretical template, we use the "minimal bias" model for the cosmological clustering observables for the flat $Λ$CDM cosmological model. We compare the model predictions with the measurements in each redshift bin on large scales, $R>12$ and $8~h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$ for $Δ\!Σ(R)$ and $w_\mathrm{p}(R)$, respectively, where the perturbation theory-inspired model is valid. When we employ weak priors on cosmological parameters, without CMB information, we find $S_8=0.936^{+0.092}_{-0.086}$, $σ_8=0.85^{+0.16}_{-0.11}$, and $Ω_\mathrm{m}=0.283^{+0.12}_{-0.035}$ for the flat $Λ$CDM model. Although the central value of $S_8$ appears to be larger than those inferred from other cosmological experiments, we find that the difference is consistent with expected differences due to sample variance, and our results are consistent with the other results to within the statistical uncertainties. Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam revisits the large-scale environmental dependence on galaxy morphology over 360 deg$^2$ at z=0.3-0.6

This study investigates the role of large-scale environments on the fraction of spiral galaxies at $z=$ 0.3-0.6 sliced to three redshift bins of $Δz=0.1$. Here, we sample 276220 massive galaxies in a limited stellar mass of $5\times10^{10}$ solar mass ($\sim M^\ast$) over 360 deg$^2$, as obtained from the Second Public Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). By combining projected two-dimensional density information (Shimakawa et al. 2021) and the CAMIRA cluster catalog (Oguri et al. 2018), we investigate the spiral fraction across large-scale overdensities and in the vicinity of red sequence clusters. We adopt transfer learning to significantly reduce the cost of labeling spiral galaxies and then perform stacking analysis across the entire field to overcome the limitations of sample size. Here we employ a morphological classification catalog by the Galaxy Zoo Hubble (Willet et al. 2017) to train the deep learning model. Based on 74103 sources classified as spirals, we find moderate morphology-density relations on ten comoving Mpc scale, thanks to the wide-field coverage of HSC-SSP. Clear deficits of spiral galaxies have also been confirmed, in and around 1136 red sequence clusters. Furthermore, we verify whether there is a large-scale environmental dependence on rest-frame $u-r$ colors of spiral galaxies; however, such a tendency was not observed in our sample.

Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program: A Mass-Dependent Slope of the Galaxy Size-Mass Relation at $z<1$

We present the galaxy size-mass ($R_{e}-M_{\ast}$) distributions using a stellar-mass complete sample of $\sim1.5$ million galaxies, covering $\sim100$ deg$^2$, with $\log(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})>10.2~(9.2)$ over the redshift range $0.2<z<1.0$ $(z<0.6)$ from the second public data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. We confirm that, at fixed redshift and stellar mass over the range of $\log(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})<11$, star-forming galaxies are on average larger than quiescent galaxies. The large sample of galaxies with accurate size measurements, thanks to the excellent imaging quality, also enables us to demonstrate that the $R_{e}-M_{\ast}$ relations of both populations have a form of broken power-law, with a clear change of slopes at a pivot stellar mass $M_{p}$. For quiescent galaxies, below an (evolving) pivot mass of $\log(M_{p}/M_{\odot})=10.2-10.6$ the relation follows $R_{e}\propto M_{\ast}^{0.1}$; above $M_{p}$ the relation is steeper and follows $R_{e}\propto M_{\ast}^{0.6-0.7}$. For star-forming galaxies, below $\log(M_{p}/M_{\odot})\sim10.7$ the relation follows $R_{e}\propto M_{\ast}^{0.2}$; above $M_{p}$ the relation evolves with redshift and follows $R_{e}\propto M_{\ast}^{0.3-0.6}$. The shallow power-law slope for quiescent galaxies below $M_{p}$ indicates that large low-mass quiescent galaxies have sizes similar to those of their counterpart star-forming galaxies. We take this as evidence that large low-mass quiescent galaxies have been recently quenched (presumably through environment-specific process) without significant structural transformation. Interestingly, the pivot stellar mass of the $R_{e}-M_{\ast}$ relations coincides with mass at which half of the galaxy population is quiescent, implied that the pivot mass represents the transition of galaxy growth from being dominated by in-situ star formation to being dominated by (dry) mergers.

Third Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program

The paper presents the third data release of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), a wide-field multi-band imaging survey with the Subaru 8.2m telescope. HSC-SSP has three survey layers (Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep) with different area coverages and depths, designed to address a wide array of astrophysical questions. This third release from HSC-SSP includes data from 278 nights of observing time and covers about 670 square degrees in all five broad-band filters at the full depth ($\sim26$~mag at $5σ$) in the Wide layer. If we include partially observed area, the release covers 1,470 square degrees. The Deep and UltraDeep layers have $\sim80\%$ of the originally planned integration times, and are considered done, as we have slightly changed the observing strategy in order to compensate for various time losses. There are a number of updates in the image processing pipeline. Of particular importance is the change in the sky subtraction algorithm; we subtract the sky on small scales before the detection and measurement stages, which has significantly reduced false detections. Thanks to this and other updates, the overall quality of the processed data has improved since the previous release. However, there are limitations in the data (for example, the pipeline is not optimized for crowded fields), and we encourage the user to check the quality assurance plots as well as a list of known issues before exploiting the data. A Wide and Deep Exploration of Radio Galaxies with Subaru HSC (WERGS). IV. Rapidly Growing (Super-)Massive Black Holes in Extremely Radio-Loud Galaxies

We present the optical and infrared properties of 39 extremely radio-loud galaxies discovered by cross-matching the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) deep optical imaging survey and VLA/FIRST 1.4 GHz radio survey. The recent Subaru/HSC strategic survey revealed optically-faint radio galaxies (RG) down to $g_\mathrm{AB} \sim 26$, opening a new parameter space of extremely radio-loud galaxies (ERGs) with radio-loudness parameter of $\log \mathcal{R}_\mathrm{rest} = \log (f_{1.4 \mathrm{GHz,rest}}/f_{g,\mathrm{rest}}) >4$. Because of their optical faintness and small number density of $\sim1~$deg$^{-2}$, such ERGs were difficult to find in the previous wide but shallow, or deep but small area optical surveys. ERGs show intriguing properties that are different from the conventional RGs: (1) most ERGs reside above or on the star-forming main-sequence, and some of them might be low-mass galaxies with $\log (M_\star/M_\odot) < 10$. (2) ERGs exhibit a high specific black hole accretion rate, reaching the order of the Eddington limit. The intrinsic radio-loudness ($\mathcal{R}_\mathrm{int}$), defined by the ratio of jet power over bolometric radiation luminosity, is one order of magnitude higher than that of radio quasars. This suggests that ERGs harbor a unique type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that show both powerful radiations and jets. Therefore, ERGs are prominent candidates of very rapidly growing black holes reaching Eddington-limited accretion just before the onset of intensive AGN feedback.

Multi-Modal Pedestrian Detection with Large Misalignment Based on Modal-Wise Regression and Multi-Modal IoU

The combined use of multiple modalities enables accurate pedestrian detection under poor lighting conditions by using the high visibility areas from these modalities together. The vital assumption for the combination use is that there is no or only a weak misalignment between the two modalities. In general, however, this assumption often breaks in actual situations. Due to this assumption's breakdown, the position of the bounding boxes does not match between the two modalities, resulting in a significant decrease in detection accuracy, especially in regions where the amount of misalignment is large. In this paper, we propose a multi-modal Faster-RCNN that is robust against large misalignment. The keys are 1) modal-wise regression and 2) multi-modal IoU for mini-batch sampling. To deal with large misalignment, we perform bounding box regression for both the RPN and detection-head with both modalities. We also propose a new sampling strategy called "multi-modal mini-batch sampling" that integrates the IoU for both modalities. We demonstrate that the proposed method's performance is much better than that of the state-of-the-art methods for data with large misalignment through actual image experiments.

Geometric Data Augmentation Based on Feature Map Ensemble

Deep convolutional networks have become the mainstream in computer vision applications. Although CNNs have been successful in many computer vision tasks, it is not free from drawbacks. The performance of CNN is dramatically degraded by geometric transformation, such as large rotations. In this paper, we propose a novel CNN architecture that can improve the robustness against geometric transformations without modifying the existing backbones of their CNNs. The key is to enclose the existing backbone with a geometric transformation (and the corresponding reverse transformation) and a feature map ensemble. The proposed method can inherit the strengths of existing CNNs that have been presented so far. Furthermore, the proposed method can be employed in combination with state-of-the-art data augmentation algorithms to improve their performance. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using standard datasets such as CIFAR, CUB-200, and Mnist-rot-12k.

Interrelation of the environment of Ly$α$ emitters and massive galaxies at $2<z<4.5$

We present a comparison of the spatial distributions of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) and massive star-forming and quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) at $2 -20$). From the overdensity distributions, LAEs are located in less dense regions than SFGs and QGs, whereas SFGs and QGs tend to be in the same overdensity distributions. The different spatial distributions of LAEs compared to those of massive galaxies may be attributed to assembly bias or large amounts of neutral hydrogen gas associated with massive halos. These results reinforce the importance of exploring multiple galaxy populations in quantifying the intrinsic galaxy environment of the high-$z$ universe.

Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam excavates colossal over- and under-dense structures over 360 deg2 out to z=1

Subaru Strategic Program with the Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC-SSP) has proven to be successful with its extremely-wide area coverage in past years. Taking advantages of this feature, we report initial results from exploration and research of expansive over- and under-dense structures at $z=$ 0.3-1 based on the second Public Data Release where optical 5-band photometric data for $\sim$ eight million sources with $i<23$ mag are available over $\sim360$ square degrees. We not only confirm known superclusters but also find candidates of titanic over- and under-dense regions out to $z=1$. The mock data analysis suggests that the density peaks would involve one or more massive dark matter haloes ($>10^{14}$ M$_\odot$) of the redshift, and the density troughs tend to be empty of massive haloes over $>10$ comoving Mpc. Besides, the density peaks and troughs at $z<0.6$ are in part identified as positive and negative weak lensing signals respectively, in mean tangential shear profiles, showing a good agreement with those inferred from the full-sky weak lensing simulation. The coming extensive spectroscopic surveys will be able to resolve these colossal structures in three-dimensional space. The number density information over the entire survey field will be available as grid-point data on the website of the HSC-SSP data release (https://hsc.mtk.nao.ac.jp/ssp/data-release/).

Hyper Suprime-Cam Legacy Archive

We present the launch of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Legacy Archive (HSCLA), a public archive of processed, science-ready data from Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). HSC is an optical wide-field imager installed at the prime focus of the Subaru Telescope and has been in operation since 2014. While ~1/3 of the total observing time of HSC has been used for the Subaru Strategic Program (SSP), the remainder of the time is used for PI programs. We have processed the data from these PI programs and make the processed, high quality data available to the community through HSCLA. The current version of HSCLA includes data taken in the first year of science operation, 2014. We provide both individual and coadd images as well as photometric catalogs. The photometric catalog from the coadd is loaded to the database, which offers a fast access to the large catalog. There are other online tools such as image browser and image cutout tool and they will be useful for science analyses. The coadd images reach 24-27th magnitudes at $5σ$ for point sources and cover approximately 580 square degrees in at least one filter with 150 million objects in total. We perform extensive quality assurance tests and verify the photometric and astrometric quality of the data to be good enough for most scientific explorations. However, the data are not without problems and users are referred to the list of known issues before exploiting the data for science. All the data and documentations can be found at the data release site, https://hscla.mtk.nao.ac.jp/.

Deep Snapshot HDR Imaging Using Multi-Exposure Color Filter Array

In this paper, we propose a deep snapshot high dynamic range (HDR) imaging framework that can effectively reconstruct an HDR image from the RAW data captured using a multi-exposure color filter array (ME-CFA), which consists of a mosaic pattern of RGB filters with different exposure levels. To effectively learn the HDR image reconstruction network, we introduce the idea of luminance normalization that simultaneously enables effective loss computation and input data normalization by considering relative local contrasts in the "normalized-by-luminance" HDR domain. This idea makes it possible to equally handle the errors in both bright and dark areas regardless of absolute luminance levels, which significantly improves the visual image quality in a tone-mapped domain. Experimental results using two public HDR image datasets demonstrate that our framework outperforms other snapshot methods and produces high-quality HDR images with fewer visual artifacts.

Faint Quasars Live in the Same Number Density Environments as Lyman Break Galaxies at z ~ 4

Characterizing high-z quasar environments is key to understanding the co-evolution of quasars and the surrounding galaxies. To restrict their global picture, we statistically examine the g-dropout galaxy overdensity distribution around 570 faint quasar candidates at z ~ 4, based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program survey. We compare the overdensity significances of g-dropout galaxies around the quasars with those around g-dropout galaxies, and find no significant difference between their distributions. A total of 4 (22) out of the 570 faint quasars, 0.7_{-0.4}^{+0.4} (3.9_{-0.8}^{+0.8}) %, are found to be associated with the > 4 sigma overdense regions within an angular separation of 1.8 (3.0) arcmin, which is the typical size of protoclusters at this epoch. This is similar to the fraction of g-dropout galaxies associated with the > 4 sigma overdense regions. This result is consistent with our previous work that 1.3_{-0.9}^{+0.9} % and 2.0_{-1.1}^{+1.1} % of luminous quasars detected in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey exist in the > 4 sigma overdense regions within 1.8 and 3.0 arcmin separations, respectively. Therefore, we suggest that the galaxy number densities around quasars are independent of their luminosity, and most quasars do not preferentially appear in the richest protocluster regions at z ~ 4. The lack of an apparent positive correlation between the quasars and the protoclusters implies that: i) the gas-rich major merger rate is relatively low in the protocluster regions, ii) most high-z quasars may appear through secular processes, or iii) some dust-obscured quasars exist in the protocluster regions.

Adaptive Future Frame Prediction with Ensemble Network

Future frame prediction in videos is a challenging problem because videos include complicated movements and large appearance changes. Learning-based future frame prediction approaches have been proposed in kinds of literature. A common limitation of the existing learning-based approaches is a mismatch of training data and test data. In the future frame prediction task, we can obtain the ground truth data by just waiting for a few frames. It means we can update the prediction model online in the test phase. Then, we propose an adaptive update framework for the future frame prediction task. The proposed adaptive updating framework consists of a pre-trained prediction network, a continuous-updating prediction network, and a weight estimation network. We also show that our pre-trained prediction model achieves comparable performance to the existing state-of-the-art approaches. We demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing methods especially for dynamically changing scenes.
