Scalar, fermionic and supersymmetric field theories with subsystem symmetries in d+1 dimensions

We study various non-relativistic field theories with exotic symmetries called subsystem symmetries, which have recently attracted much attention in the context of fractons. We start with a scalar theory called $ϕ$-theory in $d+1$ dimensions and discuss its properties studied in literature for $d\leq 3$ such as self-duality, vacuum structure, 't Hooft anomaly, anomaly inflow and lattice regularization. Next we study a theory called chiral $ϕ$-theory which is an analogue of a chiral boson with subsystem symmetries. Then we discuss theories including fermions with subsystem symmetries. We first construct a supersymmetric version of the $ϕ$-theory and dropping its bosonic part leads us to a purely fermionic theory with subsystem symmetries called $ψ$-theory. We argue that lattice regularization of the $ψ$-theory generically suffers from an analogue of doubling problem as previously pointed out in the $d=3$ case. We propose an analogue of Wilson fermion to avoid the ``doubling" problem. We also supersymmetrize the chiral $ϕ$-theory and dropping the bosonic part again gives us a purely fermionic theory. We finally discuss vacuum structures of the theories with fermions and find that they are infinitely degenerate because of spontaneous breaking of subsystem symmetries.

Numerical studies on the finite-temperature CP restoration in 4D SU(N) gauge theory at $θ=π$

Recent studies on the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition have suggested a nontrivial phase structure in 4D SU($N$) gauge theory at $θ=π$. In the large-$N$ limit, it has been found that CP symmetry at $θ=π$ is broken in the confined phase, while it restores in the deconfined phase, which is indeed one of the possible scenarios. However, at small $N$, one may find other situations that are consistent with the consequence of the anomaly matching condition. Here we investigate this issue for $N=2$ by direct lattice calculations. The crucial point to note is that the CP restoration can be probed by the sudden change of the tail of the topological charge distribution at $θ=0$, which can be seen by simulating the theory at imaginary $θ$ without the sign problem. Our results suggest that the CP restoration at $θ=π$ occurs at temperature higher than the deconfining temperature unlike the situation in the large-$N$ limit.

DMRG study of the higher-charge Schwinger model and its 't Hooft anomaly

The charge-$q$ Schwinger model is the $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a charge-$q$ Dirac fermion. It has the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ $1$-form symmetry and also enjoys the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ chiral symmetry in the chiral limit, and there is a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between those symmetries. We numerically study the charge-$q$ Schwinger model in the lattice Hamiltonian formulation using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). When applying DMRG, we map the Schwinger model to a spin chain with nonlocal interaction via Jordan-Wigner transformation, and we take the open boundary condition instead of the periodic one to make the Hilbert space finite-dimensional. When computing the energy density or chiral condensate, we find that using local operators significantly reduces the boundary effect compared with the computation of corresponding extensive quantities divided by the volume. To discuss the consequence of the 't Hooft anomaly, we carefully treat the renormalization of the chiral condensates, and then we confirm that Wilson loops generate the discrete chiral transformations in the continuum limit.

Classically Emulated Digital Quantum Simulation of the Schwinger Model with Topological Term via Adiabatic State Preparation

We perform a digital quantum simulation of a gauge theory with a topological term in Minkowski spacetime, which is practically inaccessible by standard lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on $1+1$ dimensional quantum electrodynamics with the $θ$-term known as the Schwinger model. We construct the true vacuum state of a lattice Schwinger model using adiabatic state preparation which, in turn, allows us to compute an expectation value of the fermion mass operator with respect to the vacuum. Upon taking a continuum limit we find that our result in massless case agrees with the known exact result. In massive case, we find an agreement with mass perturbation theory in small mass regime and deviations in large mass regime. We estimate computational costs required to take a reasonable continuum limit. Our results imply that digital quantum simulation is already useful tool to explore non-perturbative aspects of gauge theories with real time and topological terms.

String theory, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and Riemann hypothesis

We discuss new relations among string theory, four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) and the Riemann hypothesis. It is known that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to an inequality for the sum of divisors function $σ(n)$. Based on previous results in literature, we focus on the fact that $σ(n)$ appears in a problem of counting supersymmetric states in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with $SU(3)$ gauge group: the Schur limit of the superconformal index plays a role of a generating function of $σ(n)$. Then assuming the Riemann hypothesis gives bounds on information on the $1/8$-BPS states in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. The AdS/CFT correspondence further connects the Riemann hypothesis to the type IIB superstring theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. In particular, the Riemann hypothesis implies a miraculous cancellation among Kaluza-Klein modes of the supergravity multiplet and D3-branes wrapping supersymmetric cycles in the string theory. We also discuss possibilities to gain new insights on the Riemann hypothesis from the physics side.

Classically emulated digital quantum simulation for screening and confinement in the Schwinger model with a topological term

We perform digital quantum simulation, using a classical simulator, to study screening and confinement in a gauge theory with a topological term, focusing on ($1+1$)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (Schwinger model) with a theta term. We compute the ground state energy in the presence of probe charges to estimate the potential between them, via adiabatic state preparation. We compare our simulation results and analytical predictions for a finite volume, finding good agreements. In particular our result in the massive case shows a linear behavior for non-integer charges and a non-linear behavior for integer charges, consistently with the expected confinement (screening) behavior for non-integer (integer) charges.

A new technique for solving the freezing problem in the complex Langevin simulation of 4D SU(2) gauge theory with a theta term

We apply the complex Langevin method (CLM) to overcome the sign problem in 4D SU(2) gauge theory with a theta term extending our previous work on the 2D U(1) case. The topology freezing problem can be solved by using open boundary conditions in all spatial directions, and the criterion for justifying the CLM is satisfied even for large $θ$ as far as the lattice spacing is sufficiently small. However, we find that the CP symmetry at $θ=π$ remains to be broken explicitly even in the continuum and infinite-volume limits due to the chosen boundary conditions. In particular, this prevents us from investigating the interesting phase structures suggested by the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition. We also try the so-called subvolume method, which turns out to have a similar problem. We therefore discuss a new technique within the CLM, which enables us to circumvent the topology freezing problem without changing the boundary conditions.

Negative string tension of higher-charge Schwinger model via digital quantum simulation

We study some properties of generalized global symmetry for the charge-$q$ Schwinger model in the Hamiltonian formalism, which is the $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with a charge-$q$ Dirac fermion. This model has the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ $1$-form symmetry, which is a remnant of the electric $U(1)$ $1$-form symmetry in the pure Maxwell theory. It is known that if we put the theory on closed space, then the Hilbert space is decomposed into $q$ distinct sectors, called universes and some states with higher energy density do not decay to the ground state due to the selection rule of the $1$-form symmetry. Even with open boundaries, we can observe the stability of such states by seeing a negative string tension behavior, meaning that opposite charges repel with each other. We develop a method based on the adiabatic state preparation to see this feature with digital quantum simulation and confirm it using a classical simulator of quantum devices. Especially, we measure local energy density and see how it jumps between inside and outside of insertion of the probe charges. We explicitly see that the energy density inside is lower than the outside one. This is a clear signature of the negative string tension.

Toward simulating Superstring/M-theory on a quantum computer

We present a novel framework for simulating matrix models on a quantum computer. Supersymmetric matrix models have natural applications to superstring/M-theory and gravitational physics, in an appropriate limit of parameters. Furthermore, for certain states in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, several supersymmetric quantum field theories dual to superstring/M-theory can be realized on a quantum device. Our prescription consists of four steps: regularization of the Hilbert space, adiabatic state preparation, simulation of real-time dynamics, and measurements. Regularization is performed for the BMN matrix model with the introduction of energy cut-off via the truncation in the Fock space. We use the Wan-Kim algorithm for fast digital adiabatic state preparation to prepare the low-energy eigenstates of this model as well as thermofield double state. Then, we provide an explicit construction for simulating real-time dynamics utilizing techniques of block-encoding, qubitization, and quantum signal processing. Lastly, we present a set of measurements and experiments that can be carried out on a quantum computer to further our understanding of superstring/M-theory beyond analytic results.

Quantum phase transition and Resurgence: Lessons from 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SQED

We study a resurgence structure of a quantum field theory with a phase transition to uncover relations between resurgence and phase transitions. In particular, we focus on three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics (SQED) with multiple hypermultiplets, where a second-order quantum phase transition has been recently proposed in the large-flavor limit. We provide interpretations of the phase transition from the viewpoints of Lefschetz thimbles and resurgence. For this purpose, we study the Lefschetz thimble structure and properties of the large-flavor expansion for the partition function obtained by the supersymmetric localization. We show that the second-order phase transition is understood as a phenomenon where a Stokes and anti-Stokes phenomenon occurs simultaneously. The order of the phase transition is determined by how saddles collide at the critical point. In addition, the phase transition accompanies an infinite number of Stokes phenomena due to the supersymmetry. These features are appropriately mapped to the Borel plane structures as the resurgence theory expects. Given the lessons from the SQED, we provide a more general discussion on the relationship between the resurgence and phase transitions. In particular, we show how the information on the phase transition is decoded from the Borel resummation technique.

Non-perturbative Tests of Duality Cascades in Three Dimensional Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

It has been conjectured that duality cascade occurs in the $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory with the gauge group $U(N )_k \times U(N+M )_{-k}$ coupled to two bi-fundamental hypermultiplets. The brane picture suggests that this duality cascade can be generalized to a class of 3d $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories coming from so-called Hanany-Witten type brane configurations. In this paper we perform non-perturbative tests of the duality cascades using supersymmetry localization. We focus on $S^3$ partition functions and prove predictions from the duality cascades. We also discuss that our result can be applied to generate new dualities for more general theories which include less supersymmetric theories and theories without brane constructions.

Topological aspects of $4$D Abelian lattice gauge theories with the $θ$ parameter

We study a four-dimensional $U(1)$ gauge theory with the $θ$ angle, which was originally proposed by Cardy and Rabinovici. It is known that the model has the rich phase diagram thanks to the presence of both electrically and magnetically charged particles. We discuss the topological nature of the oblique confinement phase of the model at $θ=π$, and show how its appearance can be consistent with the anomaly constraint. We also construct the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ self-dual theory out of the Cardy-Rabinovici model by gauging a part of its one-form symmetry. This self-duality has a mixed 't Hooft anomaly with gravity, and its implications on the phase diagram is uncovered. As the model shares the same global symmetry and 't Hooft anomaly with those of $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory, studying its topological aspects would provide us more hints to explore possible dynamics of non-Abelian gauge theories with nonzero $θ$ angles.

Evidence for a Non-Supersymmetric 5d CFT from Deformations of 5d $SU(2)$ SYM

We study supersymmetry breaking deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ 5d fixed point known as $E_1$, the UV completion of $SU(2)$ super-Yang-Mills. The phases of the non-supersymmetric theory can be characterized by Chern-Simons terms involving background $U(1)$ gauge fields, allowing us to identify a phase transition at strong coupling. We propose that this may signify the emergence of a non-trivial, non-supersymmetric CFT in $d=4+1$ dimensions.

A String Dual for Partially Topological Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

We consider a string dual of a partially topological $U(N)$ Chern-Simons-matter (PTCSM) theory recently introduced by Aganagic, Costello, McNamara and Vafa. In this theory, fundamental matter fields are coupled to the Chern-Simons theory in a way that depends only on a transverse holomorphic structure on a manifold; they are not fully dynamical, but the theory is also not fully topological. One description of this theory arises from topological strings on the deformed conifold $T^* S^3$ with $N$ Lagrangian 3-branes and additional coisotropic `flavor' 5-branes. Applying the idea of the Gopakumar-Vafa duality to this setup, we suggest that this has a dual description as a topological string on the resolved conifold ${\cal O} \left( - 1 \right) \oplus {\cal O} \left( - 1 \right) \rightarrow \mathbb{CP}^1$, in the presence of coisotropic 5-branes. We test this duality by computing the annulus amplitude on the deformed conifold and the disc amplitude on the resolved conifold via equivariant localization, and we find an agreement between the two. We find a small discrepancy between the topological string results and the large $N$ limit of the partition function of the PTCSM theory arising from the deformed conifold, computed via field theory localization by a method proposed by Aganagic et al. We discuss possible origins of the mismatch.

Quantum Black Hole Entropy from 4d Supersymmetric Cardy formula

We study supersymmetric index of 4d $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $S^1 \times M_3$. We compute asymptotic behavior of the index in the limit of shrinking $S^1$ for arbitrary $N$ by a refinement of supersymmetric Cardy formula. The asymptotic behavior for the superconformal index case ($M_3 =S^3$) at large $N$ agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of rotating electrically charged BPS black hole in $AdS_5$ via a Legendre transformation as recently shown in literature. We also find that the agreement formally persists for finite $N$ if we slightly modify the AdS/CFT dictionary between Newton constant and $N$. This implies an existence of non-renormalization property of the quantum black hole entropy. We also study the cases with other gauge groups and additional matters, and the orbifold $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. It turns out that the entropies of all the CFT examples in this paper are given by $2π\sqrt{Q_1 Q_2 +Q_1 Q_3 +Q_2 Q_3 -2c(J_1 +J_2 )} $ with charges $Q_{1,2,3}$, angular momenta $J_{1,2}$ and central charge $c$. The results for other $M_3$ make predictions to the gravity side.

Resurgence and Lefschetz thimble in 3d N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theories

We study a certain class of supersymmetric (SUSY) observables in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Chern-Simons (CS) matter theories and investigate how their exact results are related to the perturbative series with respect to coupling constants given by inverse CS levels. We show that the observables have nontrivial resurgent structures by expressing the exact results as a full transseries consisting of perturbative and non-perturbative parts. As real mass parameters are varied, we encounter Stokes phenomena at an infinite number of points, where the perturbative series becomes non-Borel-summable due to singularities on the positive real axis of the Borel plane. We also investigate the Stokes phenomena when the phase of the coupling constant is varied. For these cases, we find that the Borel ambiguities in the perturbative sector are canceled by those in nonperturbative sectors and end up with an unambiguous result which agrees with the exact result even on the Stokes lines. We also decompose the Coulomb branch localization formula, which is an integral representation for the exact results, into Lefschetz thimble contributions and study how they are related to the resurgent transseries. We interpret the non-perturbative effects appearing in the transseries as contributions of complexified SUSY solutions which formally satisfy the SUSY conditions but are not on the original path integral contour.

Supersymmetry Breaking in a Large N Gauge Theory with Gravity Dual

We study phase structure of mass-deformed ABJM theory which is a three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal theory deformed by mass parameters and has the gauge group $\text{U}(N)\times \text{U}(N)$ with Chern-Simons levels $(k,-k)$ which may have a gravity dual. We discuss that the mass deformed ABJM theory on $S^3$ breaks supersymmetry in a large-$N$ limit if the mass is larger than a critical value. To see some evidence for this conjecture, we compute the partition function exactly, and numerically by using the Monte Carlo Simulation for small $N$. We discover that the partition function has zeroes as a function of the mass deformation parameters if $N\ge k$, which supports the large-$N$ supersymmetry breaking. We also find a solution to the large-$N$ saddle point equations, where the free energy is consistent with the finite $N$ result.

Supersymmetric solutions and Borel singularities for N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories

In supersymmetric (SUSY) field theory, there exist configurations which formally satisfy SUSY conditions but are not on original path integral contour. We refer to such configurations as complexified supersymmetric solutions (CSS). In this paper we discuss that CSS provide important information on large order behavior of weak coupling perturbative series in SUSY field theories. We conjecture that CSS with a bosonic (fermionic) free parameter give poles (zeroes) of Borel transformation of perturbative series whose locations are uniquely determined by actions of the solutions. We demonstrate this for various SUSY observables in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Chern-Simons matter theories on sphere. First we construct infinite number of CSS in general 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY theory with Lagrangian where adjoint scalar in vector multiplet takes a complex value and matter fields are nontrivial. Then we compare their actions with Borel transformations of perturbative expansions by inverse Chern-Simons levels for the observables and see agreement with our conjecture. It turns out that the CSS explain all the Borel singularities for this case.
