Beyond spin-1/2: Multipolar spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric crystals with time-reversal symmetry

We develop a symmetry-adapted multipolar $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theory close to the bulk $\Gamma$ point for time-reversal-symmetric, noncentrosymmetric $C_{3v}$ crystals in the strong atomic spin-orbit-coupling ($jj$-coupling) limit. Using a $j\in\{1/2,3/2,5/2\}$ multiplet basis appropriate for heavy-element \textit{p}- and \textit{d}-bands, we systematically construct all symmetry-allowed spin-orbit coupling terms up to fifth order in momentum and generalize the usual spin texture to a total-angular-momentum texture. For $j>1/2$, multipolar spin-orbit coupling qualitatively reshapes Fermi surfaces and makes the topology of Bloch states band dependent. This leads to anisotropic high-$j$ textures that go beyond a single Rashba helix. We classify these textures by their total-angular-momentum vorticity $W_{n}$ for every energy band and identify distinct $|W_{n}|=1,2,5$ phases. We show that their crossovers generate enhanced and nonmonotonic current-induced spin-polarization responses, namely the Edelstein effect, upon tuning the chemical potential. Our results provide a symmetry-based framework for analyzing and predicting multipolar spin-orbit coupling, total-angular-momentum textures, and spintronic responses in heavy-element materials without an inversion center.

Phonon-mediated intrinsic topological superconductivity in Fermi arcs

We propose that phonons can intrinsically mediate topological superconductivity on the surface of Weyl semimetals. Weyl semimetals are gapless topological materials with nondegenerate zero energy surface states known as Fermi arcs. We derive the phonon spectrum and electron-phonon coupling in an effective model of a Weyl semimetal and apply weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity. In a slab geometry, we find that surface superconductivity dominates over bulk superconductivity in a range of chemical potentials around the Weyl nodes. The superconducting gap function realizes spinless chiral $p$-wave Cooper pairing in the Fermi arcs, leading to Majorana bound states in the core of vortices. Furthermore, we find a suppression of the absolute value of the gap in the center of the Fermi arcs, which is not captured by a local Hubbard attraction. The suppression is due to the nonlocal origin of electron-phonon coupling, leading to a layer dependence which has important consequences for topological surface states.

Inter-orbital Cooper pairing at finite energies in Rashba surface states

Multi-band effects in hybrid structures provide a rich playground for unconventional superconductivity. We combine two complementary approaches based on density-functional theory (DFT) and effective low-energy model theory in order to investigate the proximity effect in a Rashba surface state in contact to an $s$-wave superconductor. We discuss these synergistic approaches and combine the effective model and DFT analysis at the example of a Au/Al heterostructure. This allows us to predict finite-energy superconducting pairing due to the interplay of the Rashba surface state of Au, and hybridization with the electronic structure of superconducting Al. We investigate the nature of the induced superconducting pairing and quantify its mixed singlet-triplet character. Our findings demonstrate general recipes to explore real material systems that exhibit inter-orbital pairing away from the Fermi energy.

Helical Topological Superconducting Pairing at Finite Excitation Energies

We propose helical topological superconductivity away from the Fermi surface in three-dimensional time-reversal-symmetric odd-parity multiband superconductors. In these systems, pairing between electrons originating from different bands is responsible for the corresponding topological phase transition. Consequently, a pair of helical topological Dirac surface states emerges at finite excitation energies. These helical Dirac surface states are tunable in energy by chemical potential and strength of band-splitting. They are protected by time-reversal symmetry combined with crystalline two-fold rotation symmetry. We suggest concrete materials in which this phenomenon could be observed.

Intrinsic finite-energy Cooper pairing in $j=3/2$ superconductors

We show that Cooper pairing can occur intrinsically away from the Fermi surface in $j=3/2$ superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling and equally curved bands in the normal state. In contrast to conventional pairing between spin-$1/2$ electrons, we derive that pairing can happen between inter-band electrons having different magnetic quantum numbers, for instance, $m_j=1/2$ and $m_j=3/2$. Such superconducting correlations manifest themselves by a pair of indirect gap-like structures at finite excitation energies. An observable signature of this exotic pairing is the emergence of a pair of symmetric superconducting coherence peaks in the density of states at finite energies. Moreover, the angular-momentum-resolved density of states in the presence of a perturbative Zeeman field reflects the $m_j$ composition of the Cooper pairs. We argue that such finite-energy pairing is a generic feature of $j=3/2$ superconductors, both in presence and absence of inversion symmetry.

Topological properties of a generalized spin-orbit-coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

We explore theoretically the effect of inter and intra cell spin-orbit couplings on topological properties of a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with multipartite lattice structure containing even number of sites per unit cell. We show that the spin-orbit couplings enrich topological phase diagrams so that nontrivial topological regions in the space of parameters extend significantly which is suitable for potential applications. We present an analytical formula for winding number in terms of sublattice number signaling that there are two nontrivial topological phases in the space of parameters hosting twofold/fourfold degenerate zero-mode boundary states. We also find that by increasing the number of sublattices within unit cell, the nontrivial regions of topological phase diagram including twofold degenerate zero-mode edge states extend dramatically. Our symmetry investigation shows that U(1) spin rotational symmetry around the lattice direction is the crucial ingredient for the appearance of fourfold degenerate zero-mode boundary states.

One-dimensional topological metal

We propose a new type of topological states of matter exhibiting topologically nontrivial edge states (ESs) within gapless bulk states (GBSs) protected by both spin rotational and reflection symmetries. A model presenting such states is simply comprised of a one-dimensional reflection symmetric superlattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling containing odd number of sublattices per unit cell. We show that the system has a rich phase diagram including a topological metal (TM) phase where nontrivial ESs coexist with nontrivial GBSs at Fermi level. Topologically distinct phases can be reached through subband gap closing-reopening transition depending on the relative strength of inter and intra unit cell spin-orbit couplings. Moreover, topological class of the system is AI with an integer topological invariant called $\mathbb{Z}$ index. The stability of TM states is also analyzed against Zeeman magnetic fields and on-site potentials resulting in that the spin rotational symmetry around the lattice direction is a key requirement for the appearance of such states. Also, possible experimental realizations are discussed.

Zeeman-field-induced nontrivial topological phases in a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled dimerized lattice

We study theoretically the interplay effect of Zeeman field and modulated spin-orbit coupling on topological properties of a one-dimensional dimerized lattice, known as Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We find that in the weak (strong) modulated spin-orbit coupling regime, trivial regions or nontrivial ones with two pairs of zero-energy states can be turned into nontrivial regions by applying a uniform (staggered) perpendicular Zeeman field through a topological phase transition. Furthermore, the resulting nontrivial phase hosting a pair of zero-energy boundary states can survive within a certain range of the perpendicular Zeeman field magnitude. Due to the effective time-reversal, particle-hole, chiral, and inversion symmetries, in the presence of either uniform or staggered perpendicular Zeeman field, the topological class of the system is BDI which can be characterized by $\mathbbm{Z}$ index. We also examine the robustness of the nontrivial phase by breaking the underlying symmetries giving rise that inversion symmetry plays an important role.
