Spectral geometry of functional metrics on noncommutative tori

We introduce a new family of metrics, called functional metrics, on noncommutative tori and study their spectral geometry. We define a class of Laplace type operators for these metrics and study their spectral invariants obtained from the heat trace asymptotics. A formula for the second density of the heat trace is obtained. In particular, the scalar curvature density and the total scalar curvature of functional metrics are explicitly computed in all dimensions for certain classes of metrics including conformally flat metrics and twisted product of flat metrics. Finally a Gauss-Bonnet type theorem for a noncommutative two torus equipped with a general functional metric is proved.

The Ricci Curvature for Noncommutative Three Tori

We compute the Ricci curvature of a curved noncommutative three torus. The computation is done both for conformal and non-conformal perturbations of the flat metric. To perturb the flat metric, the standard volume form on the noncommutative three torus is perturbed and the corresponding perturbed Laplacian is analyzed. Using Connes' pseudodifferential calculus for the noncommutative tori, we explicitly compute the second term of the short time heat kernel expansion for the perturbed Laplacians on functions and on 1-forms. The Ricci curvature is defined by localizing heat traces suitably. Equivalerntly, it can be defined through special values of localized spectral zeta functions. We also compute the scalar curvatures and compare our results with previous calculations in the conformal case. Finally we compute the classical limit of our formulas and show that they coincide with classical formulas in the commutative case.

Gauss-Bonnet for matrix conformally rescaled Dirac

We derive an explicit formula for the scalar curvature over a two-torus with a Dirac operator conformally rescaled by a globally diagonalizable matrix. We show that the Gauss-Bonnet theorem holds and extend the result to all Riemann surfaces with Dirac operators modified in the same way.

The Ricci Curvature in Noncommutative Geometry

Motivated by the local formulae for asymptotic expansion of heat kernels in spectral geometry, we propose a definition of Ricci curvature in noncommutative settings. The Ricci operator of an oriented closed Riemannian manifold can be realized as a spectral functional, namely the functional defined by the zeta function of the full Laplacian of the de Rham complex, localized by smooth endomorphisms of the cotangent bundle and their trace. We use this formulation to introduce the Ricci functional in a noncommutative setting and in particular for curved noncommutative tori. This Ricci functional uniquely determines a density element, called the Ricci density, which plays the role of the Ricci operator. The main result of this paper provides an explicit computation of the Ricci density when the conformally flat geometry of the noncommutative two torus is encoded by the modular de Rham spectral triple.

Monoidal Categories, 2-Traces, and Cyclic Cohomology

In this paper we show that to a unital associative algebra object (resp. co-unital co-associative co-algebra object) of any abelian monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ endowed with a symmetric $2$-trace, one can attach a cyclic (resp. cocyclic) module, and therefore speak of the cyclic (co)homology of the (co)algebra "with coefficients in $F$". We observe that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a $\mathcal{C}$-bimodule category equipped with a stable central pair then $\mathcal{C}$ acquires a symmetric 2-trace. The dual notions of symmetric $2$-contratraces and stable central contrapairs are derived as well. As an application we can recover all Hopf cyclic type (co)homology theories, obtain a conceptual understanding of anti-Yetter-Drinfeld modules, and give a formula-free definition of cyclic cohomology. The machinery can also be applied in settings more general than Hopf algebra modules and comodules.

A Scalar Curvature Formula For the Noncommutative 3-Torus

We compute the scalar curvature of a curved noncommutative 3-torus. To perturb the flat metric, the standard volume form on the noncommutative 3-torus is conformally perturbed and the corresponding perturbed Laplacian is analyzed. Using Connes' pseudodifferential calculus for the noncommutative 3-torus, we explicitly compute the first three terms of the small time heat kernel expansion for the perturbed Laplacian. The third term of the expansion gives a local formula for the scalar curvature. Finally, we show that in the classical limit when the deformation parameters vanish, our formula coincides with the formula for the commutative case.

On Certain Spectral Invariants of Dirac Operators on Noncommutative Tori

The spectral eta function for certain families of Dirac operators on noncommutative $3$-torus is considered and the regularity at zero is proved. By using variational techniques, we show that $η_{D}(0)$ is a conformal invariant. By studying the Laurent expansion at zero of $\text{TR} (|D|^{-z})$, the conformal invariance of $ζ'_{|D|}(0)$ for noncommutative $3$-torus is proved. Finally, for the coupled Dirac operator, a local formula for the variation $\partial_Aη_{D+A}(0)$ is derived which is the analogue of the so called induced Chern-Simons term in quantum field theory literature.

Rationality of Spectral Action for Robertson-Walker Metrics

We use pseudodifferential calculus and heat kernel techniques to prove a conjecture by Chamseddine and Connes on rationality of the coefficients of the polynomials in the cosmic scale factor $a(t)$ and its higher derivatives, which describe the general terms $a_{2n}$ in the expansion of the spectral action for general Robertson-Walker metrics. We also compute the terms up to $a_{12}$ in the expansion of the spectral action by our method. As a byproduct, we verify that our computations agree with the terms up to $a_{10}$ that were previously computed by Chamseddine and Connes by a different method.

The Curvature of the Determinant Line Bundle on the Noncommutative Two Torus

We compute the curvature of the determinant line bundle on a family of Dirac operators for a noncommutative two torus. Following Quillen's original construction for Riemann surfaces and using zeta regularized determinant of Laplacians, one can endow the determinant line bundle with a natural Hermitian metric. By using an analogue of Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace, defined on Connes' algebra of classical pseudodifferential symbols for the noncommutative two torus, we compute the curvature form of the determinant line bundle by computing the second variation $δ_{w}δ_{\bar{w}}\log\det(Δ)$.

Cup Coproducts in Hopf Cyclic Cohomology

We define cup coproducts for Hopf cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras and for its dual theory. We show that for universal enveloping algebras and group algebras our coproduct recovers the standard coproducts on Lie algebra homology and group homology, respectively.

A Riemann-Roch theorem for the noncommutative two torus

We prove the analogue of the Riemann-Roch formula for the noncommutative two torus $ A_θ = C(\mathbb{T}_θ^2)$ equipped with an arbitrary translation invariant complex structure and a Weyl factor represented by a positive element $k\in C^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}_θ^2)$. We consider a topologically trivial line bundle equipped with a general holomorphic structure and the corresponding twisted Dolbeault Laplacians. We define an spectral triple ($A_θ, \mathcal{H}, D)$ that encodes the twisted Dolbeault complex of $ A_θ$ and whose index gives the left hand side of the Riemann-Roch formula. Using Connes' pseudodifferential calculus and heat equation techniques, we explicitly compute the $b_2$ terms of the asymptotic expansion of $\text{Tr} (e^{-tD^2})$. We find that the curvature term on the right hand side of the Riemann-Roch formula coincides with the scalar curvature of the noncommutative torus recently defined and computed in \cite{CM1} and \cite{FK2}.

A Two Dimensional Adler-Manin Trace and Bi-singular Operators

Motivated by the theory of bi-singular pseudodifferential operators, we introduce a two dimensional version of the Adler-Manin trace. Our construction is rather general in the sense that it involves a twist afforded by an algebra automorphism. That is, starting from an algebra equipped with an automorphism, two twisted derivations, and a twisted invariant trace, we construct an algebra of formal twisted pseudodifferential symbols and define a noncommutative residue. Also, we provide related examples.

Scalar Curvature for Noncommutative Four-Tori

In this paper we study the curved geometry of noncommutative 4-tori $\mathbb{T}_θ^4$. We use a Weyl conformal factor to perturb the standard volume form and obtain the Laplacian that encodes the local geometric information. We use Connes' pseudodifferential calculus to explicitly compute the terms in the small time heat kernel expansion of the perturbed Laplacian which correspond to the volume and scalar curvature of $\mathbb{T}_θ^4$. We establish the analogue of Weyl's law, define a noncommutative residue, prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem, and find explicit formulas for the local functions that describe the scalar curvature of $\mathbb{T}_θ^4$. We also study the analogue of the Einstein-Hilbert action for these spaces and show that metrics with constant scalar curvature are critical for this action.

Weyl's Law and Connes' Trace Theorem for Noncommutative Two Tori

We prove the analogue of Weyl's law for a noncommutative Riemannian manifold, namely the noncommutative two torus $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$ equipped with a general translation invariant conformal structure and a Weyl conformal factor. This is achieved by studying the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Laplacian on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$. We also prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem by showing that the Dixmier trace and a noncommutative residue coincide on pseudodifferential operators of order -2 on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$.

Scalar Curvature for the Noncommutative Two Torus

We give a local expression for the {\it scalar curvature} of the noncommutative two torus $ A_θ = C(\mathbb{T}_θ^2)$ equipped with an arbitrary translation invariant complex structure and Weyl factor. This is achieved by evaluating the value of the (analytic continuation of the) {\it spectral zeta functional} $ζ_a(s): = \text{Trace}(a \triangle^{-s})$ at $s=0$ as a linear functional in $a \in C^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}_θ^2)$. A new, purely noncommutative, feature here is the appearance of the {\it modular automorphism group} from the theory of type III factors and quantum statistical mechanics in the final formula for the curvature. This formula coincides with the formula that was recently obtained independently by Connes and Moscovici in their recent paper.

Noncommutative complex geometry of the quantum projective space

We define holomorphic structures on canonical line bundles of the quantum projective space $\qp^{\ell}_q$ and identify their space of holomorphic sections. This determines the quantum homogeneous coordinate ring of the quantum projective space. We show that the fundamental class of $\qp^{\ell}_q$ is naturally presented by a twisted positive Hochschild cocycle. Finally, we verify the main statements of Riemann-Roch formula and Serre duality for $\qp^{1}_q$ and $\qp^{2}_q$.
