Improved stability estimates at elliptic equilibria of Hamiltonian systems

This paper deals with an improvement of the "a-priori stability bounds" on the variation of the action variables and on the stability time obtained from a given Birkhoff normal form around the elliptic equilibrium point of an Hamiltonian system satisfying a non-resonance condition of finite order N. In particular, we improve the standard a-priori lower bound on the stability time from a purely linear dependence on the inverse of the polynomial norm of the remainder of the normal form to the sum of a linear term (which is still present but with a different constant coefficient) and a quadratic one. The prevalence between the linear and the quadratic term depends on the resonance properties of all the monomials in the remainder of the normal form with degree from N to a finite order M. We also provide a comparative example of the new estimates and the traditional a priori ones in the framework of computer-assisted proofs.

A Kustaanheimo-Stiefel regularization of the elliptic restricted three-body problem and the detection of close encounters with fast Lyapunov indicators

We present the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel (KS) regularization of the elliptic restricted three-body problem (ER3BP) at the secondary body $P_2$, and discuss its use to study a category of transits through its Hill's sphere (fast close encounters). Starting from the Hamiltonian representation of the problem using the synodic rotating-pulsating reference frame and the true anomaly of $P_2$ as independent variable, we perform the regularization at the secondary body analogous to the circular case by applying the classical KS transformation and the iso-energetic reduction in an extended 10-dimensional phase-space. Using such regularized Hamiltonian we recover a definition of fast close encounters in the ER3BP for small values of the mass parameter $μ$ (while we do not require a smallness condition on the eccentricity of the primaries), and we show that for these encounters the solutions of the variational equations are characterized by an exponential growth during the fast transits through the Hill's sphere. Thus, for small $μ$, we justify the effectiveness of the regularized fast Lyapunov indicators (RFLIs) to detect orbits with multiple fast close encounters. Finally, we provide numerical demonstrations and show the benefits of the regularization in terms of the computational cost.

Parametric approximations of fast close encounters of the planar three-body problem as arcs of a focus-focus dynamics

A gravitational close encounter of a small body with a planet may produce a substantial change of its orbital parameters which can be studied using the circular restricted three-body problem. In this paper we provide parametric representations of the fast close encounters with the secondary body of the planar CRTBP as arcs of non-linear focus-focus dynamics. The result is the consequence of a remarkable factorization of the Birkhoff normal forms of the Hamiltonian of the problem represented with the Levi-Civita regularization. The parametrizations are computed using two different sequences of Birkhoff normalizations of given order N. For each value of N, the Birkhoff normalizations and the parameters of the focus-focus dynamics are represented by polynomials whose coefficients can be computed iteratively with a computer algebra system; no quadratures, such as those needed to compute action-angle variables of resonant normal forms, are needed. We also provide some numerical demonstrations of the method for values of the mass parameter representative of the Sun-Earth and the Sun-Jupiter cases.

On the analytical construction of halo orbits and halo tubes in the elliptic restricted three-body problem

The halo orbits of the spatial circular restricted three-body problem are largely considered in space-flight dynamics to design low-energy transfers between celestial bodies. A very efficient analytical method for the computation of halo orbits, and the related transfers, has been obtained from the high-order resonant Birkhoff normal forms defined at the Lagrangian points L1-L2. In this paper, by implementing a non-linear Floquet-Birkhoff resonant normal form, we provide the definition of orbits, as well as their manifold tubes, which exist in a large order approximation of the elliptic three-body problem and generalize the halo orbits of the circular problem. Since the libration amplitude of such halo orbits is large (comparable to the distance of L1-L2 to the secondary body), and the Birkhoff normal forms are obtained through series expansions at the Lagrangian points, we provide also an error analysis of the method with respect to the orbits of the genuine elliptic restricted three-body problem.

Integrability of close encounters in the spatial restricted three-body problem

We extend to the spatial case a technique of integration of the close encounters formulated by Tullio Levi-Civita for the planar restricted three-body problem. We consider the Hamiltonian introduced in the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel regularization and construct a complete integral of the related Hamilton-Jacobi equation by means of a series convergent in a neighbourhood of the collisions with the primary or secondary body.

Transits close to the Lagrangian solutions $L_1,L_2$ in the Elliptic Restricted Three-body Problem

In the last decades a peculiar family of solutions of the Circular Restricted Three Body Problem has been used to explain the temporary captures of small bodies and spacecrafts by a planet of the Solar System. These solutions, which transit close to the Lagrangian points $L_1,L_2$ of the CRTBP, have been classified using the values of approximate local integrals and of the Jacobi constant. The use for small bodies of the Solar System requires to consider a hierarchical extension of the model, from the CRTBP to the the full $N$ planetary problem. The Elliptic Restricted Three Body, which is the first natural extension of the CRTBP, represents already a challenge, since global first integrals such as the Jacobi constant are not known for this problem. In this paper we extend the classification of the transits occurring close to the Lagrangian points $L_1,L_2$ of the ERTBP using a combination of the Floquet theory and Birkhoff normalizations. Provided that certain non-resonance conditions are satisfied, we conjugate the Hamiltonian of the problem to an integrable normal form Hamiltonian with remainder, which is used to define approximate local first integrals and to classify the transits of orbits through a neighbourhood of the Lagrange equilibria according to the values of these integrals. We provide numerical demonstrations for the Earth-Moon ERTBP.

A study of temporary captures and collisions in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem with normalizations of the Levi-Civita Hamiltonian

The dynamics near the Lagrange equilibria $L_1$ and $L_2$ of the Circular Restricted Three-body Problem has gained attention in the last decades due to its relevance in some topics such as the temporary captures of comets and asteroids and the design of trajectories for space missions. In this paper we investigate the temporary captures using the tube manifolds of the horizontal Lyapunov orbits originating at $L_1$ and $L_2$ of the CR3BP at energy values which have not been considered so far. After showing that the radius of convergence of any Hamiltonian normalization at $L_1$ or $L_2$ computed with the Cartesian variables is limited in amplitude by $\|1-μ-x_{L_1}\|$ ($μ$ denoting the reduced mass of the problem), we investigate if regularizations allow us to overcome this limit. In particular, we consider the Hamiltonian describing the planar three-body problem in the Levi-Civita regularization and we compute its normalization for the Sun-Jupiter reduced mass for an interval of energy which overcomes the limit of Cartesian normalizations. As a result, for the largest values of the energy that we consider, we notice a transition in the structure of the tubes manifolds emanating from the Lyapunov orbit, which can contain orbits that collide with the secondary body before performing one full circulation around it. We discuss the relevance of this transition for temporary captures.

Semi-analytic computations of the speed of Arnold diffusion along single resonances in a priori stable Hamiltonian systems

Cornerstone models of Physics, from the semi-classical mechanics in atomic and molecular physics to planetary systems, are represented by quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems. Since Arnold's example, the long-term diffusion in Hamiltonian systems with more than two degrees of freedom has been represented as a slow diffusion within the `Arnold web', an intricate web formed by chaotic trajectories. With modern computers it became possible to perform numerical integrations which reveal this phenomenon for moderately small perturbations. Here we provide a semi-analytic model which predicts the extremely slow-time evolution of the action variables along the resonances of multiplicity one. We base our model on two concepts: (i) By considering a (quasi-)stationary phase approach to the analysis of the Nekhoroshev normal form, we demonstrate that only a small fraction of the terms of the associated optimal remainder provide meaningful contributions to the evolution of the action variables. (ii) We provide rigorous analytical approximations to the Melnikov integrals of terms with stationary or quasi-stationary phase. Applying our model to an example of three degrees of freedom steep Hamiltonian provides the speed of Arnold diffusion, as well as a precise representation of the evolution of the action variables, in very good agreement (over several orders of magnitude) with the numerically computed one.

The Steep Nekhoroshev's Theorem

Revising Nekhoroshev's geometry of resonances, we provide a fully constructive and quantitative proof of Nekhoroshev's theorem for steep Hamiltonian systems proving, in particular, that the exponential stability exponent can be taken to be $1/ (2n α_1\cdotsα_{n-2}$) ($α_i$'s being Nekhoroshev's steepness indices and $n\ge 3$ the number of degrees of freedom).

Evolution of the tangent vectors and localization of the stable and unstable manifolds of hyperbolic orbits by Fast Lyapunov Indicators

The Fast Lyapunov Indicators are functions defined on the tangent fiber of the phase-space of a discrete (or continuous) dynamical system, by using a finite number of iterations of the dynamics. In the last decade, they have been largely used in numerical computations to localize the resonances in the phase-space and, more recently, also the stable and unstable manifolds of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. In this paper, we provide an analytic description of the growth of tangent vectors for orbits with initial conditions which are close to the stable-unstable manifolds of a hyperbolic saddle point of an area-preserving map. The representation explains why the Fast Lyapunov Indicator detects the stable-unstable manifolds of all fixed points which satisfy a certain condition. If the condition is not satisfied, a suitably modified Fast Lyapunov Indicator can be still used to detect the stable-unstable manifolds. The new method allows for a detection of the manifolds with a number of precision digits which increases linearly with respect to the integration time. We illustrate the method on the critical problem of detection of the so-called tube manifolds of the Lyapunov orbits of L1,L2 in the circular restricted three-body problem.

Convergence to the time average by stochastic regularization

We compare the rate of convergence to the time average of a function over an integrable Hamiltonian flow with the one obtained by a stochastic perturbation of the same flow. Precisely, we provide detailed estimates in different Fourier norms and we prove the convergence even in a Sobolev norm for a special vanishing limit of the stochastic perturbation.

On the integrability of stellar motion in an accelerated logarithmic potential

An accelerated logarithmic potential models the mean motion of stars in a flat rotation curve galaxy that sustains a wind system. For stars outside the galactic wind launching region, the asymmetric removal of linear momentum by the wind is seen as a perturbing acceleration superimposed onto the galactic potential. We study the integrability of stellar motion in an accelerated logarithmic potential. We use surfaces of section of the dynamical system to probe the integrability of motion. We provide numerical evidence that motion in an accelerated logarithmic potential is non-integrable. Large scale chaotic diffusion occurs for lower values of the projected angular momentum along the direction of acceleration and persists at all values of the angular momentum in the outer part of the galaxy inside the truncation radius where the galactic acceleration balances the wind-induced acceleration.

The Accelerated Kepler Problem

The accelerated Kepler problem is obtained by adding a constant acceleration to the classical two-body Kepler problem. This setting models the dynamics of a jet-sustaining accretion disk and its content of forming planets as the disk loses linear momentum through the asymmetric jet-counterjet system it powers. The dynamics of the accelerated Kepler problem is analyzed using physical as well as parabolic coordinates. The latter naturally separate the problem's Hamiltonian into two unidimensional Hamiltonians. In particular, we identify the origin of the secular resonance in the accelerated Kepler problem and determine analytically the radius of stability boundary of initially circular orbits that are of particular interest to the problem of radial migration in binary systems as well as to the truncation of accretion disks through stellar jet acceleration.

First numerical evidence of global Arnold diffusion in quasi--integrable systems

We provide numerical evidence of global diffusion occurring in slightly perturbed integrable Hamiltonian systems and symplectic maps. We show that even if a system is sufficiently close to be integrable, global diffusion occurs on a set with peculiar topology, the so--called Arnold web, and is qualitatively different from Chirikov diffusion, occurring in more perturbed systems.
