Black holes with non-minimal derivative coupling

We study the gravitational field equations in the presence of a coupling between the derivative of a massless scalar field and the Einstein tensor. This configuration is motivated by Galileon gravity as it preserves shift invariance in the scalar sector. We analytically obtain solutions with static and spherically symmetric geometry, which also include black holes with a single regular horizon. We examine the thermodynamical properties of these solutions, and we reveal the non-perturbative nature of the Galileon coupling constant. We also find a phase transition, similar to the one described by Hawking and Page, which occurs at a critical temperature determined by both the black hole mass and by the strength of the coupling.

Fab Four: When John and George play gravitation and cosmology

Scalar-tensor theories of gravitation have recently regained a great interest after the discovery of the Chameleon mechanism and of the Galileon models. The former allows, in principle, to reconcile the presence of cosmological scalar fields with the constraints from experiments at the Solar System scale. The latter open up the possibility of building inflationary models that, among other things, do not need ad hoc potentials. Further generalizations have finally led to the most general tensor-scalar theory, recently dubbed the "Fab Four", with only first and second order derivatives of the fields in the equations of motion and that self-tune to a vanishing cosmological constant. This model has a very rich phenomenology that needs to be explored and confronted with experimental data in order to constrain a very large parameter space. In this paper, we present some results regarding a subset of the theory named "John", which corresponds to a non-minimal derivative coupling between the scalar field and the Einstein tensor in the action. We show that this coupling gives rise to an inflationary model with very unnatural initial conditions. Thus, we include a non-minimal, but non-derivative, coupling between scalar field and Ricci scalar, a term named "George" in the Fab Four terminology. In this way, we find a more sensible inflationary model, and, by performing a post-newtonian expansion of spherically symmetric solutions, we derive the set of equations that constrain the parameter space with data from experiments in the solar system.

Observational signatures of pre-inflationary and lower-dimensional effective gravity

Several alternative ways to quantize gravitational interactions seem to indicate that gravity at short distances is effectively two-dimensional. If this were true, and the energy scale at which the dimensional transition occurs is of the order of the inflationary one, it is reasonable to investigate eventual signatures in the primordial perturbation spectra. In this paper we look at this possibility by assuming that the inflationary era was preceded by an effectively two-dimensional evolution of the Universe. We model the transition with a mode matching and we show that, in this case, no observational signatures are expected in the tensor and scalar power spectra nor in their ratio. We also show that assuming modified dispersion relations before the matching between two sets of four-dimensional modes leads to similar results.

Aspects of Quantum Gravity in Cosmology

We review some aspects of quantum gravity in the context of cosmology. In particular, we focus on models with a phenomenology accessible to current and near-future observations, as the early Universe might be our only chance to peep through the quantum gravity realm.

The entropy of an acoustic black hole in Bose-Einstein condensates

We compute the entanglement entropy associated to the Hawking emission of a $(1+1)$-dimensional acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We use the brick wall model proposed by 't Hooft, adapted to the momentum space, in order to tackle the case when high frequency dispersion is taken in account. As expected, we find that in the hydrodynamic limit the entropy only depends on the size of the box in the near-horizon region, as for gravitational $(1+1)$-dimensional black holes. When dispersion effects are considered, we find a correction that depends on the square of the size of the near-horizon region measured in units of healing length, very similar to the universal correction to the entropy found in the case of spin-1/2 Heisenberg XX chains.

On infrared and ultraviolet divergences of cosmological perturbations

We study a consistent infrared and ultraviolet regularization scheme for the cosmological perturbations. The infrared divergences are cured by assuming that the Universe undergoes a transition between a non-singular pre-inflationary, radiation-dominated phase and a slow-roll inflationary evolution. The ultraviolet divergences are eliminated via adiabatic subtraction. A consistent regularization of the field fluctuations through this transition is obtained by performing a mode matching for both the gauge invariant Mukhanov variable and its adiabatic expansion. We show that these quantities do not generate ultraviolet divergences other than the standard ones, when evolving through the matching time. We also show how the de Witt-Schwinger expansion, which can be used to construct the counter-terms regularizing the ultraviolet divergences, ceases to be valid well before horizon exit of the scales of interest. Thus, such counter-terms should not be used beyond the time of the horizon exit so it is unlikely that the observed power spectrum is modified by adiabatic subtraction as claimed in the literature. However, the infrared regularization might have an impact on the observed spectrum, and we briefly discuss this possibility.

A new approach to non-commutative inflation

We propose an inflationary scenario inspired by a recent formulation, in terms of coherent states, of non-commutative quantum field theory. We consider the semiclassical Einstein equations, and we exploit the ultraviolet finiteness of the non-commutative propagator to construct the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor associated to a generic scalar field. It turns out that the latter is always finite and dominated by an effective cosmological constant. By combining this general feature with the intrinsic fuzziness of spacetime, we show that non-commutativity governs the energy density of the early Universe in such a way that the strong energy condition is violated. Thus, there might be a bounce and a subsequent inflationary phase, which does not need any \emph{ad hoc} scalar field.

A minimal length versus the Unruh effect

In this Letter we study the radiation measured by an accelerated detector, coupled to a scalar field, in the presence of a fundamental minimal length. The latter is implemented by means of a modified momentum space Green's function. After calibrating the detector, we find that the net flux of field quanta is negligible, and that there is no Planckian spectrum. We discuss possible interpretations of this result, and we comment on experimental implications in heavy ion collisions and atomic systems.

Particle production and transplanckian problem on the non-commutative plane

We consider the coherent state approach to non-commutativity, and we derive from it an effective quantum scalar field theory. We show how the non-commutativity can be taken in account by a suitable modification of the Klein-Gordon product, and of the equal-time commutation relations. We prove that, in curved space, the Bogolubov coefficients are unchanged, hence the number density of the produced particle is the same as for the commutative case. What changes though is the associated energy density, and this offers a simple solution to the transplanckian problem.

On Adiabatic Renormalization of Inflationary Perturbations

We discuss the impact of adiabatic renormalization on the power spectrum of scalar and tensor perturbations from inflation. We show that adiabatic regularization is ambiguous as it leads to very different results, for different adiabatic subtraction schemes, both in the range $v\equiv k/(aH) \gsim 0.1$ and in the infrared regime. All these schemes agree in the far ultraviolet, $v\gg 1$. Therefore, we argue that in the far infrared regime, $v\ll 1$, the adiabatic expansion is no longer valid, and the unrenormalized spectra are the physical, measurable quantities. These findings cast some doubt on the validity of the adiabatic subtraction at horizon exit, $v=1$, to determine the perturbation spectra from inflation which has recently advocated in the literature.

Graviton production in non-inflationary cosmology

We discuss the creation of massless particles in a Universe, which transits from a radiation-dominated era to any other expansion law. We calculate in detail the generation of gravitons during the transition to a matter dominated era. We show that the resulting gravitons generated in the standard radiation/matter transition are negligible. We use our result to constrain one or more previous matter dominated era, or any other expansion law, which may have taken place in the early Universe. We also derive a general formula for the modification of a generic initial graviton spectrum by an early matter dominated era.

A momentum-space representation of Green's functions with modified dispersion relations on general backgrounds

We consider the problem of calculating the Green's functions associated to a massive scalar field with modified dispersion relations. We analyze the case when dispersion is modified by higher derivative spatial operators acting on the field orthogonally to a preferred direction, determined by a unit time-like vector field. By assuming that the integral curves of the vector field are geodesics, we expand the modified Klein-Gordon equation in Fermi normal coordinates. By means of a Fourier transform, we find a series representation in momentum-space of the Green's functions. The coefficients of the series are geometrical terms containing combinations of the Ricci tensor and the vector field, as expected from previous calculations with different methods and for specific backgrounds.

Superluminal dispersion relations and the Unruh effect

In the context of quantum gravity phenomenology, we study the Unruh effect in the presence of superluminal dispersion relations. In particular, we estimate the response function and the probability rate for an accelerated detector coupled to a massless scalar field, whose dispersion relation becomes essentially quadratic beyond a threshold momentum $k_p$. By means of perturbative analysis, we show that superluminal dispersion induces a correction to the Planckian spectrum, which tends to vanish as $k_p$ increases.

Modified Dispersion Relations and trans-Planckian Physics

We consider modified dispersion relations in quantum field theory on curved space-time. Such relations, despite breaking the local Lorentz invariance at high energy, are considered in several phenomenological approaches to quantum gravity. Their existence involves a modification of the formalism of quantum field theory, starting from the problem of finding the scalar Green's functions up to the renormalization of various quantum expectation values. In this work we consider a simple example of such modifications, in the case of ultra-static metric. We show how to overcome the lack of Lorentz invariance by introducing a preferred frame, with respect to which we can express the Green's functions as an integral over all frequencies of a space-dependent function. The latter can be expanded in momentum space, and by integrating over all frequencies, we finally find the expansion of the Green's function up to four derivatives of the metric tensor. The relation with the proper-time formalism is also discussed.

A momentum-space representation of Green's functions with modified dispersion on ultra-static space-time

We consider the Green's functions associated to a scalar field propagating on a curved, ultra-static background, in the presence of modified dispersion relations. The usual proper-time deWitt-Schwinger procedure to obtain a series representation of the Green's functions is doomed to failure, because of higher order spatial derivatives in the Klein-Gordon operator. We show how to overcome this difficulty by considering a preferred frame, associated to a unit time-like vector. With respect to this frame, we can express the Green's functions as an integral over all frequencies of a space-dependent function. The latter can be expanded in momentum space, as a series with geometric coefficients similar to the deWitt-Schwinger's ones. By integrating over all frequencies, we finally find the expansion of the Green's function up to four derivatives of the metric tensor. The relation with the proper-time formalism is also discussed.

Self-T-Dual Brane Cosmology

We show how T-duality can be implemented with brane cosmology. As a result, we obtain a smooth bouncing cosmology with features similar to the ones of the pre-Big Bang scenario. Also, by allowing T-duality transformations along the time-like direction, we find a static solution that displays an interesting self tuning property.

Self-T-Dual Brane Cosmology and the Cosmological Constant Problem

We consider a codimension-one brane embedded in a gravity-dilaton bulk action, whose symmetries are compatible with T-duality along the space-like directions parallel to the brane, and the bulk time-like direction. The equations of motions in the string frame allow for a smooth background obtained by the union of two symmetric patches of AdS space. The Poincaré invariance of the solution appears to hold independently of the value of the brane vacuum energy, through a self-tuning property of the dilaton ground state. Moreover, the effective cosmology displays a bounce, at which the scale factor does not shrink to zero. Finally, by exploiting the T-duality symmetry, we show how to construct an ever-expanding Universe, along the lines of the Pre-Big Bang scenario.
