Off-diagonal correlations in a one-dimensional gas of dipolar bosons

We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of the one-body density matrix (OBDM) and the momentum distribution of one-dimensional dipolar bosons, with dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the direction of confinement. We observe that the long-range nature of the dipole interaction has dramatic effects on the off-diagonal correlations: although the dipoles never crystallize, the system goes from a quasi-condensate regime at low interactions to a regime in which quasi-condensation is discarded, in favor of quasi-solidity. For all strengths of the dipolar interaction, the OBDM shows an oscillatory behavior coexisting with an overall algebraic decay; and the momentum distribution shows sharp kinks at the wavevectors of the oscillations, $Q = \pm 2πn$ (where $n$ is the atom density), beyond which it is strongly suppressed. This \emph{momentum filtering} effect introduces a characteristic scale in the momentum distribution, which can be arbitrarily squeezed by lowering the atom density. This shows that one-dimensional dipolar Bose gases, realized e.g. by trapped dipolar molecules, show strong signatures of the dipolar interaction in time-of-flight measurements.

Thin helium film on a glass substrate

We investigate by Monte Carlo simulations the structure, energetics and superfluid properties of thin helium-four films (up to four layers) on a glass substrate, at low temperature. The first adsorbed layer is found to be solid and "inert", i.e., atoms are localized and do not participate to quantum exchanges. Additional layers are liquid, with no clear layer separation above the second one. It is found that a single helium-three impurity resides on the outmost layer, not significantly further away from the substrate than helium-four atoms on the same layer.

Ground-State Properties of Quantum Many-Body Systems: Entangled-Plaquette States and Variational Monte Carlo

We propose a new ansatz for the ground-state wave function of quantum many-body systems on a lattice. The key idea is to cover the lattice with plaquettes and obtain a state whose configurational weights can be optimized by means of a Variational Monte Carlo algorithm. Such a scheme applies to any dimension, without any "sign" instability. We show results for various two dimensional spin models (including frustrated ones). A detailed comparison with available exact results, as well as with variational methods based on different ansatzs is offered. In particular, our numerical estimates are in quite good agreement with exact ones for unfrustrated systems, and compare favorably to other methods for frustrated ones.

Disorder-induced superfluidity

We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the phase diagram of hard-core bosons with short-ranged {\it attractive} interactions, in the presence of uniform diagonal disorder. It is shown that moderate disorder stabilizes a glassy superfluid phase in a range of values of the attractive interaction for which the system is a Mott insulator, in the absence of disorder. A transition to an insulating Bose glass phase occurs as the strength of the disorder or interactions increases.

Quantum statistics and the momentum distribution of liquid para-hydrogen

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations of bulk liquid para-hydrogen at a temperature T=16.5 K have been carried out using the continuous-space Worm Algorithm. Results for the momentum distribution, as well as for the kinetic energy per particle and the pair correlation function are reported. The static equilibrium thermodynamic properties of this system can be generally computed by assuming that molecules are distinguishable. However, the one-body density matrix (and the associated momentum distribution) are affected by particle indistinguishability and quantum statistics, to an extent that lends itself to experimental observation. Comparisons with available experimental data and other theoretical and numerical calculations are offered.

Vacancy supersolid of hard-core bosons on the square lattice

The ground state of hard-core bosons on the square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor repulsion is studied by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A supersolid phase with vacancy condensation and 'star' diagonal ordering is found for filling less than a quarter. At fillings above one quarter, a supersolid phase exists between the star and the stripe crystal at half-filling. No supersolid phase occurs above quarter-filling, if the ground state at half-filling is either a checkerboard crystal or a superfluid. No commensurate supersolid phase is observed.

Disorder and the elusive superfluid phase of para-hydrogen

The possibility that disorder may stabilize a superfluid phase of para-hydrogen in two dimensions is investigated theoretically by means of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We model disorder using a random distribution of scatterers, and study the thermodynamic behavior of the system as a function of the scatterer density. Disorder gives rise to equilibrium glassy phases with no superfluid properties. Indeed, the propensity for quantum exchanges of hydrogen molecules is reduced even with respect to what is observed if the scatterers are arranged as a regular crystal, a physical setting that also yields no superfluidity.

Local Superfluidity of Parahydrogen Clusters

We study by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations the local superfluid response of small (up to 27 molecules) parahydrogen clusters, down to temperatures as low as 0.05 K. We show that at low temperature superfluidity is not confined at the surface of the clusters, as recently claimed by Khairallah et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 183401 (2007)]. Rather, even clusters with a pronounced shell structure are essentially uniformly superfluid. Superfluidity occurs as a result of long exchange cycles involving all molecules.

Superfluidity of isotopically doped parahydrogen clusters

It is shown by computer simulations that superfluid {\it para}-hydrogen clusters of more than 22 molecules can be turned insulating and "solidlike" by the replacement of as few as one or two molecules, with ones of the heavier {\it ortho}-deuterium isotope. A much smaller effect is observed with substitutional {\it ortho}-hydrogen. Substitutional {\it ortho}-deuterium molecules prevalently sit in the inner part of the cluster, whereas {\it ortho}-hydrogen impurities reside primarily in the outer shell, near the surface. Implications on the superfluidity of pure {\it para}-hydrogen clusters are discussed.

Molecular hydrogen isotopes adsorbed on krypton-preplated graphite: Quantum Monte Carlo simulations

Adsorption of ortho-deuterium and para-hydrogen films on a graphite substrate, pre-plated with a single atomic layer of krypton, is studied theoretically by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations at low temperature. Our model explicitly includes substrate corrugation. Energetic and structural properties of these adsorbed films are computed for a range of hydrogen coverages. Thermodynamically stable adsorbed films are solid, with no clear evidence of any liquid-like phase. Quantum exchanges of ortho-deuterium and para-hydrogen are essentially absent in this system, down to zero temperature; consequently, this system displays no superfluidity in this limit. Our simulations provide evidence of a stable domain wall fluid at low temperature, consistently with recent experimental observations.

Structure, superfluidity, and quantum melting of hydrogen clusters

We present results of a theoretical study of para-hydrogen and ortho-deuterium clusters at low temperature (0.5 K < T < 3.5 K), based on Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. Clusters of size up to N=21 para-hydrogen molecules are nearly entirely superfluid at T < 1 K. For 21 < N < 30, the superfluid response displays strong variations with N, reflecting structural changes that occur on adding or removing even a single molecule. Some clusters in this size range display quantum melting, going from solid- to liquid-like as T tends to 0. Melting is caused by quantum exchanges of molecules. The largest para-hydrogen cluster for which a significant superfluid response is observed comprises 27 molecules. Evidence of a finite superfluid response is presented for ortho-deuterium clusters of size up to 14 molecules. Magic numbers are observed, at which both types of clusters feature pronounced stability.

The fate of vacancy-induced supersolidity in 4He

The supersolid state of matter, exhibiting non-dissipative flow in solids, has been elusive for thirty five years. The recent discovery of a non-classical moment of inertia in solid 4He by Kim and Chan provided the first experimental evidence, although the interpretation in terms of supersolidity of the ideal crystal phase remains subject to debate. Using quantum Monte Carlo methods we investigate the long-standing question of vacancy-induced superflow and find that vacancies in a 4He crystal phase separate instead of forming a supersolid. On the other hand, non-equilibrium vacancies relaxing on defects of poly-crystalline samples could provide an explanation for the experimental observations.

Superfluidity and Quantum Melting of para-Hydrogen clusters

Structural and superfluid properties of para-Hydrogen clusters of size up to N=40 molecules, are studied at low temperature (0.5 K < T < 4 K) by Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. The superfluid fraction displays an interesting, non-monotonic behavior for 22 < N < 30. We interpret this dependence in terms of variations with N of the cluster structure. Superfluidity is observed at low T in clusters of as many as 27 molecules; in the temperature range considered here, quantum melting is observed in some clusters, which freeze at high temperature.

Permutation sampling in Path Integral Monte Carlo

A simple algorithm is described to sample permutations of identical particles in Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations of continuum many-body systems. The sampling strategy illustrated here is fairly general, and can be easily incorporated in any PIMC implementation based on the staging algorithm. Although it is similar in spirit to an existing prescription, it differs from it in some key aspects. It allows one to sample permutations efficiently, even if long paths (e.g., hundreds, or thousands of slices) are needed. We illustrate its effectiveness by presenting results of a PIMC calculation of thermodynamic properties of superfluid Helium-four, in which a very simple approximation for the high-temperature density matrix was utilized.

Supersolid phase of hardcore bosons on triangular lattice

We establish the nature of the supersolid phase observed for hardcore bosons on the triangular lattice near half-integer filling factor, and study the phase diagram of the system at finite temperature. We find that the solid order is always of the (2m,-m',-m') with m changing discontinuously from positive to negative values at half-filling, contrary to predictions of other phases, based on an analogy with the properties of Ising spins in transverse magnetic field. At finite temperature we find two intersecting second-order transition lines, one in the 3-state Potts universality class and the other of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Adsorption of para-Hydrogen on Fullerenes

Adsorption of para-Hydrogen on the outer surface of a single fullerene is studied theoretically, by means of ground state Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We compute energetics and radial density profiles of para-Hydrogen for various coverages on a variety of small fullerenes. The equilibrium adsorbed monolayer is commensurate with the surface of the fullerene; as the chemical potential is increased, a discontinuous change is generally observed, to an incommensurate, compressible layer. Quantum exchanges of Hydrogen molecules are absent in these systems.

Adsorption of para-Hydrogen on Krypton pre-plated graphite

Adsorption of para-Hydrogen on the surface of graphite pre-plated with a single layer of atomic krypton is studied thoretically by means of Path Integral Ground State Monte Carlo simulations. We compute energetics and density profiles of para-hydrogen, and determine the structure of the adsorbed film for various coverages. Results show that there are two thermodynamically stable monolayer phases of para-hydrogen, both solid. One is commensurate with the krypton layer, the other is incommensurate. No evidence is seen of a thermodynamically stable liquid phase, at zero temperature. These results are qualitatively similar to what is seen for for para-hydrogen on bare graphite. Quantum exchanges of hydrogen molecules are suppressed in this system.

Path Integral Ground State with a Fourth-Order Propagator: Application to Condensed Helium

Ground state properties of condensed Helium are calculated using the Path Integral Ground State (PIGS) method. A fourth-order approximation is used as short (imaginary) time propagator. We compare our results with those obtained with other Quantum Monte Carlo techniques and different propagators. For this particular application, we find that the fourth-order propagator performs comparably to the pair product approximation, and is far superior to the primitive approximation. Results obtained for the equation of state of condensed Helium show that PIGS compares favorably to other QMC methods traditionally utilized for this type of calculation.
