Comparing optical-microwave conversion and all-microwave control schemes for a transmon qubit

We report a comparative study on transmon qubit control using (i) conventional attenuated coaxial microwave line and (ii) an optical control system using modulated laser light delivered over telecommunications optical fiber to a photodiode located at the 1K stage of a dilution cryostat. During each experiment, we performed repeated measurements of the energy relaxation and coherence times of a transmon qubit using one of the control signal delivery methods. Each measurement run spanned 20 hours of measurement time and from these datasets we observe no measurable effect on coherence of the qubit compared to random coherence fluctuations. Our results open up the possibility of large scale integration of the optical qubit control system.

Dynamical Triplet Unravelling: A quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for reversible dynamics

We introduce a quantum Monte Carlo method to simulate the reversible dynamics of correlated many-body systems. Our method is based on the Laplace transform of the time-evolution operator which, as opposed to most quantum Monte Carlo methods, makes it possible to access the dynamics at longer times. The Monte Carlo trajectories are realised through a piece-wise stochastic-deterministic reversible evolution where free dynamics is interspersed with two-process quantum jumps. The dynamical sign problem is bypassed via the so-called deadweight approximation, which stabilizes the many-body phases at longer times. We benchmark our method by simulating spin excitation propagation in the XXZ model and dynamical confinement in the quantum Ising chain, and show how to extract dynamical information from the Laplace representation.

Dissipation in spin chains using quantized nonequilibrium thermodynamics

We investigate the open dynamics of a chain of interacting spins using the quantized version of the GENERIC equation from classical out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics. We focus on both equilibrium and nonequilibrium scenarios for chains of different sizes. While in the equilibrium case we demonstrate thermal equilibration to the correct many-body Gibbs density matrix, in the nonequilibrium dynamics we show a ballistic-to-diffusive transition in the steady-state energy current and a scaling that is consistent with Fourier's law of heat transfer.

Fixed Point Quantum Monte Carlo

We present a new approach to the study of equilibrium properties in many-body quantum physics. Our method takes inspiration from Density Matrix Quantum Monte Carlo and incorporates new crucial features. First of all, the dynamics is transferred to the Laplace representation where an exact equation can be derived and solved using a simulation-step that, unlike most Monte Carlo methods, is not a priori physically bounded. Moreover, the spawning events are formulated in terms of two-process stochastic unravellings of quantum master equations, a formalism that is particularly useful when working with density matrices. And last, this is equivalent to an interaction picture, where the free part is integrated exactly and the convergence rate can be greatly increased if the interaction parameter is small. We benchmark our method by applying it to two case-studies in condensed matter physics, show its accuracy and further discuss its efficiency.

Momentum-resolved spectroscopy of a 1D superfluid using a single atomic impurity

We present a general and non-invasive probing scheme to perform full momentum-resolved spectroscopy of a cold atomic gas loaded into an optical lattice using a single quantum impurity. The protocol relies on weak collisional interactions and subsequent population measurements of the impurity. By tuning a few controllable external parameters the impurity-lattice interaction can be engineered, and using two sets of measurements, performed with the impurity in two different positions, the full dispersion relation of the superfluid phonons can be reliably extracted.

Statistics of orthogonality catastrophe events in localised disordered lattices

We address the phenomenon of statistical orthogonality catastrophe in insulating disordered systems. More in detail, we analyse the response of a system of non-interacting fermions to a local perturbation induced by an impurity. By inspecting the overlap between the pre and post-quench many-body ground states we fully characterise the emergent statistics of orthogonality events as a function of both the impurity position and the coupling strength. We consider two well-known one-dimensional models, namely the Anderson and the Aubry- Andr\'e insulators, highlighting the arising differences. Particularly, in the Aubry-Andr\'e model the highly correlated nature of the quasi periodic potential produces unexpected features in how the orthogonality catastrophe occurs. We provide a quantitative explanation of such features via a simple, effective model. We further discuss the incommensurate ratio approximation and suggest a viable experimental verification in terms of charge transfer statistics and interferometric experiments using quantum probes.

Continuous-time quantum walk on spatially correlated noisy lattices

We address memory effects and diffusive properties of a continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional percolation lattice affected by spatially correlated random telegraph noise. In particular, by introducing spatially correlated time-dependent fluctuations in nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes, we describe random domains characterized by global noise. The resulting open dynamics of the walker is then unraveled by an ensemble average over all the noise realizations. Our results show that time-dependent noise assisted by spatial correlations leads to strong memory effects in the walker dynamics and to robust diffusive behavior against the detrimental action of uncorrelated noise. We also show that spatially correlated classical noise enhances localization breaking, thus making a quantum particle spread on longer distances across the lattice.

Bose-Hubbard lattice as a controllable environment for open quantum systems

We investigate the open dynamics of an atomic impurity embedded in a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard lattice. We derive the reduced evolution equation for the impurity and show that the Bose-Hubbard lattice behaves as a tunable engineered environment allowing to simulate both Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics in a controlled and experimentally realisable way. We demonstrate that the presence or absence of memory effects is a signature of the nature of the excitations induced by the impurity, being delocalized or localized in the two limiting cases of superfluid and Mott insulator, respectively. Furthermore, our findings show how the excitations supported in the two phases can be characterized as information carriers.

Momentum-Resolved and Correlations Spectroscopy Using Quantum Probes

We address some key conditions under which many-body lattice models, intended mainly as simulated condensed matter systems, can be investigated via immersed, fully controllable quantum objects, namely quantum probes. First, we present a protocol that, for a certain class of many-body systems, allows for full momentum resolved spectroscopy using one single probe. Furthermore, we demonstrate how one can extract the two-point correlations using two entangled probes. We apply our theoretical proposal to two well-known exactly solvable lattice models, a 1D Kitaev chain and 2D superfluid Bose-Hubbard model, and show its accuracy as well as its robustness against external noise.

Fluctuation relations for driven coupled classical two-level systems

We theoretically investigate fluctuation relations in a classical incomplete measurement process where just partial information is available. The scenario we consider consists of two coupled single-electron boxes where one or both devices can undergo a non-equilibrium transformation according to a chosen protocol. The entropy production of only one of the two boxes is recorded and fluctuation relations for this quantity are put to a test, showing strong modifications whose nature depends upon the specific case study.

Witnessing entanglement in hybrid systems

We extend the definition of entanglement witnesses based on structure factors to the case in which the position of the scatterers is quantized. This allows us to study entanglement detection in hybrid systems. We provide several examples that show how these extra degrees of freedom affect the detection of entanglement by directly contributing to the measurement statistics. We specialize the proposed witness operators for a chain of trapped ions. Within this framework, we show how the collective vibronic state of the chain can act as an undesired quantum environment and how ions quantum motion can affect the entanglement detection. Finally, we investigate some specific cases where the method proposed leads to detection of hybrid entanglement.

Effect of temperature on non-Markovian dynamics in Coulomb crystals

In this paper we generalize the results reported in Phys. Rev. A 88, 010101 (2013) and investigate the flow of information induced in a Coulomb crystal in presence of thermal noise. For several temperatures we calculate the non-Markovian character of Ramsey interferometry of a single 1/2 spin with the motional degrees of freedom of the whole chain. These results give a more realistic picture of the interplay between temperature, non-Markovianity and criticality.

Non-Markovian qubit dynamics induced by Coulomb crystals

We investigate the back-flow of information in a system with a second-order structural phase transition, namely a quasi one-dimensional Coulomb crystal. Using standard Ramsey interferometry which couples a target ion (the system) to the rest of the chain (a phononic environment), we study the non-Markovian character of the resulting open system dynamics. We study two different time-scales and show that the back-flow of information pinpoints both the phase transition and different dynamical features of the chain as it approaches criticality. We also establish an exact link between the back-flow of information and the Ramsey fringe visibility.

Dynamics of Atom-Atom Correlations in the Fermi problem

We present a detailed perturbative study of the dynamics of several types of atom-atom correlations in the famous Fermi problem. This is an archetypal model to study micro-causality in the quantum domain where two atoms, the first initially excited and the second prepared in its ground state, interact with the vacuum electromagnetic field. The excitation can be transferred to the second atom via a flying photon and various kinds of quantum correlations between the two are generated during this process. Among these, prominent examples are given by entanglement, quantum discord and nonlocal correlations. It is the aim of this paper to analyze the role of the light cone in the emergence of such correlations.

A simple trapped-ion architecture for high-fidelity Toffoli gates

We discuss a simple architecture for a quantum Toffoli gate implemented using three trapped ions. The gate, which in principle can be implemented with a single laser-induced operation, is effective under rather general conditions and is strikingly robust (within any experimentally realistic range of values) against dephasing, heating and random fluctuations of the Hamiltonian parameters. We provide a full characterization of the unitary and noise-affected gate using three-qubit quantum process tomography.

Stationary entanglement in N-atom subradiant degenerate cascade systems

We address ultracold $N$-atom degenerate cascade systems and show that stationary subradiant states, already observed in the semiclassical regime, also exist in a fully quantum regime and for a small number of atoms. We explicitly evaluate the amount of stationary entanglement for the two-atom configuration and show full inseparability for the three-atom case. We also show that a continuous variable description of the systems is not suitable to detect entanglement due to the nonGaussianity of subradiant states.
