Finite-temperature Gutzwiller approximation and the phase diagram of a toy-model for V2O3

We exploit exact inequalities that refer to the entropy of a distribution to derive a simple variational principle at finite temperature for trial density matrices of Gutzwiller and Jastrow type. We use the result to extend at finite temperature the Gutzwiller approximation, which we apply to study a two-orbital model that we believe captures some essential features of V$_2$O$_3$. We indeed find that the phase diagram of the model bears many similarities to that of real vanadium sesquioxide. In addition, we show that in a Bethe lattice, where the finite temperature Gutzwiller approximation provides a rigorous upper bound of the actual free energy, the results compare well with the exact phase diagram obtained by the dynamical mean field theory.

Microscopic origin of large negative magneto-electric coupling in Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$

With a combined ab initio density functional and model Hamiltonian approach we establish that in the recently discovered multiferroic phase of the manganite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ the polar distortion of Mn and O ions is stabilized via enhanced in-plane Mn-O hybridizations. The magnetic superexchange interaction is very sensitive to the polar bond-bending distortion, and we find that this dependence directly causes a strong magnetoelectric coupling. This novel mechanism for multiferroicity is consistent with the experimentally observed reduced ferroelectric polarization upon the onset of magnetic ordering.

Electronic Correlation effects in superconducting picene from ab-initio calculations

We show, by means of ab-initio calculations, that electron-electron correlations play an important role in potassium-doped picene ($K_x$-picene), recently characterized as a superconductor with $T_c = 18K$. The inclusion of exchange interactions by means of hybrid functionals reproduces the correct gap for the undoped compound and predicts an antiferromagnetic state for $x=3$, where superconductivity has been observed. The latter finding is compatible with a sizable value of the correlation strength, in agreement with simple estimates. Our results highlight the similarity between potassium-doped picene and alkali-doped fulleride superconductors.

Magnetism and Charge ordering in TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ organic crystals

Using a combination of Density Functional Theory, mean-field analysis and exact diagonalization calculations we reveal the emergence of a dimerized charge ordered state in TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ organic crystal. The interplay between charge and spin order leads to a rich phase diagram. Coexistence of charge ordering with a structural dimerization results in a ferroelectric phase, which has been observed experimentally. The tendency to the dimerization is magnetically driven revealing TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ as a multiferroic material.

Metallic surface of a bipolaronic insulator

We investigate the possibility that the surface of a strongly coupled electron-phonon system behaves differently from the bulk when the relevant parameters are inhomogeneous due to the presence of the interface. We consider parameter variations which make the surface either more metallic or more insulating than the bulk. While it appears impossible to stabilize a truly insulating surface when the bulk is metallic, the opposite situation can be realized. A metallic surface can indeed be decoupled from a bipolaronic insulator realized in the bulk.

On the possible secondary component of the order parameter observed in London penetration depth measurements

We discuss the effect of a secondary component of the superconducting order parameter on the superfluid density in the cuprates. If we assume a main $d_{x^2-y^2}$ gap, the most stable realization of a mixed order parameter has a time-reversal breaking $d_{x^2-y^2}+ \imath d_{xy}$ symmetry. In this state the nodes are removed and the temperature dependence of the superfluid density changes from the linear behavior of a pure d-wave to a more rounded shape at low temperature. The latter is compatible with the behavior experimentally observed in the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth of optimally doped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_2$ and $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$.

Genesis of coexisting itinerant and localized electrons in Iron Pnictides

We show how the general features of the electronic structure of the Fe-based high-Tc superconductors are a natural setting for a selective localization of the conduction electrons to arise. Slave-spin and Dynamical mean-field calculations support this picture and allow for a comparison of the magnetic properties with experiments.

Correlation Strength, Gaps and Particle-Hole Asymmetry in High-Tc Cuprates: a Dynamical Mean Field Study of the Three-Band Copper-Oxide Model

The three-band model relevant to high temperature copper-oxide superconductors is solved using single-site dynamical mean field theory and a tight-binding parametrization of the copper and oxygen bands. For a band filling of one hole per unit cell the metal/charge-transfer-insulator phase diagram is determined. The electron spectral function, optical conductivity and quasiparticle mass enhancement are computed as functions of electron and hole doping for parameters such that the corresponding to the paramagnetic metal and charge-transfer insulator sides of the one hole per cell phase diagram. The optical conductivity is computed using the Peierls phase approximation for the optical matrix elements. The calculation includes the physics of "Zhang-Rice singlets". The effects of antiferromagnetism on the magnitude of the gap and the relation between correlation strength and doping-induced changes in state density are determined. Three band and one band models are compared. The two models are found to yield quantitatively consistent results for all energies less than about 4eV, including energies in the vicinity of the charge-transfer gap. Parameters on the insulating side of the metal/charge-transfer insulator phase boundary lead to gaps which are too large and near-gap conductivities which are too small relative to data. The results place the cuprates clearly in the intermediate correlation regime, on the paramagnetic metal side of the metal/charge-transfer insulator phase boundary.

Antiferromagnetism and the gap of a Mott insulator: Results from analytic continuation of the self-energy

Direct analytic continuation of the self energy is used to determine the effect of antiferromagnetic ordering on the spectral function and optical conductivity of a Mott insulator. Comparison of several methods shows that the most robust estimation of the gap value is obtained by use of the real part of the continued self energy in the quasiparticle equation within the single-site dynamical mean field theory of the two dimensional square lattice Hubbard model, where for U slightly greater than the Mott critical value, antiferromagnetism increases the gap by about 80%.

Surface Polaron Formation in the Holstein model

The effect of a solid-vacuum interface on the properties of a strongly coupled electron-phonon system is analyzed using dynamical mean-field theory to solve the Holstein model in a semi-infinite cubic lattice. Polaron formation is found to occur more easily (i.e., for a weaker electron-phonon coupling) on the surface than in the bulk. On the other hand, the metal-insulator transition associated to the binding of polarons takes place at a unique critical strength in the bulk and at the surface.

Single bipolaronic Transition in Jahn-Teller Model

We investigate the bipolaronic crossover and the pairing transition for a two-orbital model with Jahn-Teller coupling to a two-fold degenerate phonon mode. The evolution from weak to strong coupling is reminiscent of the behavior of the single-band Holstein model: The polaron crossover in which the electrons and phonons become strongly entangled occurs for a weaker coupling than the binding of bipolarons, which gives rise to a metal-insulator transition. Interestingly, a single bipolaronic transition takes place also when the two bands have significantly different bandwidths, as opposed to the case of repulsive Hubbard-like interactions for which an orbital-selective Mott transition has been reported. This behavior is related to the inter-orbital nature of the Jahn-Teller coupling.

Orbital-Selective Mott transition out of band degeneracy lifting

We outline a general mechanism for Orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT), the coexistence of both itinerant and localized conduction electrons, and show how it can take place in a wide range of realistic situations, even for bands of identical width and correlation, provided a crystal field splits the energy levels in manifolds with different degeneracies and the exchange coupling is large enough to reduce orbital fluctuations. The mechanism relies on the different kinetic energy in manifolds with different degeneracy. This phase has Curie-Weiss susceptibility and non Fermi-liquid behavior, which disappear at a critical doping, all of which is reminiscent of the physics of the pnictides.

Polarized superfluidity in the attractive Hubbard model with population imbalance

We study a two-component Fermi system with attractive interactions and different populations of the two species in a cubic lattice. For an intermediate coupling we find a uniformly polarized superfluid which is stable down to very low temperatures. The momentum distribution of this phase closely resembles that of the Sarma phase, characterized by two Fermi surfaces. This phase is shown to be stabilized by a potential energy gain, as in a BCS superfluid, in contrast to the unpolarized BEC which is stabilized by kinetic energy. We present general arguments suggesting that preformed pairs in the unpolarized superfluid favor the stabilization of a polarized superfluid phase.

Strongly Correlated Superconductivity rising from a Pseudo-gap Metal

We solve by Dynamical Mean Field Theory a toy-model which has a phase diagram strikingly similar to that of high $T_c$ superconductors: a bell-shaped superconducting region adjacent the Mott insulator and a normal phase that evolves from a conventional Fermi liquid to a pseudogapped semi-metal as the Mott transition is approached. Guided by the physics of the impurity model that is self-consistently solved within Dynamical Mean Field Theory, we introduce an analytical ansatz to model the dynamical behavior across the various phases which fits very accurately the numerical data. The ansatz is based on the assumption that the wave-function renormalization, that is very severe especially in the pseudogap phase close to the Mott transition, is perfectly canceled by the vertex corrections in the Cooper pairing channel.A remarkable outcome is that a superconducting state can develop even from a pseudogapped normal state, in which there are no low-energy quasiparticles. The overall physical scenario that emerges, although unraveled in a specific model and in an infinite-coordination Bethe lattice, can be interpreted in terms of so general arguments to suggest that it can be realized in other correlated systems.

Competing superfluid and density-wave ground-states of fermionic mixtures with mass imbalance in optical lattices

We study the effect of mass imbalance on the phase diagram of a two-component fermionic mixture with attractive interactions in optical lattices. Using static and dynamical mean-field theories, we show that the pure superfluid phase is stable for all couplings when the mass imbalance is smaller than a limiting value. For larger imbalance, phase separation between a superfluid and a charge-density wave takes place when the coupling exceeds a critical strength. The harmonic trap induces a spatial segregation of the two phases, with a rapid variation of the density at the boundary.

Relevance of phonon dynamics in strongly correlated systems coupled to phonons: A Dynamical Mean Field Theory analysis

The properties of the electron-phonon interaction in the presence of a sizable electronic repulsion at finite doping are studied by investigating the metallic phase of the Hubbard-Holstein model with Dynamical Mean Field Theory. Analyzing the quasiparticle weight at finite doping, we find that a large Coulomb repulsion reduces the effect of electron-phonon coupling at low-energy, while this reduction is not present at high energy. The renormalization of the electron-phonon coupling induced by the Hubbard repul sion depends in a surprisingly strong and non-trivial way on the phonon frequency. Our results suggest that phonon might affect differently high-energy and low-energy properties and this, together with the effect of phonon dynamics, should be carefully taken into account when the effects of the electron-phonon interaction in a strongly correlated system, like the superconducting cuprates, are discussed.

Dynamical behavior across the Mott transition of two bands with different bandwidths

We investigate the role of the bandwidth difference in the Mott metal-insulator transition of a two-band Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions, by means of a Gutzwiller variational wave function as well as by dynamical mean-field theory. The variational calculation predicts a two-stage quenching of the charge degrees of freedom, in which the narrower band undergoes a Mott transition before the wider one, both in the presence and in the absence of a Hund's exchange coupling. However, this scenario is not fully confirmed by the dynamical mean-field theory calculation, which shows that, although the quasiparticle residue of the narrower band is zero within our numerical accuracy, low-energy spectral weight still exists inside the Mott-Hubbard gap, concentrated into two peaks symmetric around the chemical potential. This spectral weight vanishes only when the wider band ceases to conduct too. Although our results are compatible with several scenarios, e.g., a narrow gap semiconductor or a semimetal, we argue that the most plausible one is that the two peaks coexist with a narrow resonance tied at the chemical potential, with a spectral weight below our numerical accuracy. This quasiparticle resonance is expected to vanish when the wider band undergoes the Mott transition.

Electron-phonon interaction on bundled structures: static and transport properties

We study the small-polaron problem of a single electron interacting with the lattice for the Holstein model in the adiabatic limit on a comb lattice, when the electron-phonon interaction acts only on the base sites. The ground state properties can be easily deduced from the ones of a linear chain with an appropriate rescaling of the coupling constant. On the other hand, the dynamical properties, that involve the complete spectrum of the system, present an "exotic" behavior. In the weak coupling limit the Drude weight (zero-frequency conductivity) is enhanced with respect to its free-case value, contrary to the linear chain case, where for every finite value one has a suppression of the Drude peak. More interestingly, the loss of coherent electron motion and the polaronic localization of the carrier occurs for different coupling values. Thus for intermediate coupling, a novel phase appears with large kinetic energy and no coherent motion.
