Functional Convergence of Berry's Nodal Lengths: Approximate Tightness and Total Disorder

We consider Berry's random planar wave model (1977), and prove spatial functional limit theorems - in the high-energy limit - for discretized and truncated versions of the random field obtained by restricting its nodal length to rectangular domains. Our analysis is crucially based on a detailed study of the projection of nodal lengths onto the so-called second Wiener chaos, whose high-energy fluctuations are given by a Gaussian total disorder field indexed by polygonal curves. Such an exact characterization is then combined with moment estimates for suprema of stationary Gaussian random fields, and with a tightness criterion by Davydov and Zikitis (2005).

Matrix Hermite polynomials, Random determinants and the geometry of Gaussian fields

We study generalized Hermite polynomials with rectangular matrix arguments arising in multivariate statistical analysis and the theory of zonal polynomials. We show that these are well-suited for expressing the Wiener-Ito chaos expansion of functionals of the spectral measure associated with Gaussian matrices. In particular, we obtain the Wiener chaos expansion of Gaussian determinants of the form $\det(XX^T)^{1/2}$ and prove that, in the setting where the rows of $X$ are i.i.d. centred Gaussian vectors with a given covariance matrix, its projection coefficients admit a geometric interpretation in terms of intrinsic volumes of ellipsoids, thus extending the content of Kabluchko and Zaporozhets (2012) to arbitrary chaotic projection coefficients. Our proofs are based on a crucial relation between generalized Hermite polynomials and generalized Laguerre polynomials. In a second part, we introduce the matrix analog of the classical Mehler's formula for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and prove that matrix-variate Hermite polynomials are eigenfunctions of these operators. As a byproduct, we derive an orthogonality relation for Hermite polynomials evaluated at correlated Gaussian matrices. We apply our results to vectors of independent arithmetic random waves on the three-torus, proving in particular a CLT in the high-energy regime for a generalized notion of total variation on the full torus.

Fluctuations of nodal sets on the 3-torus and general cancellation phenomena

In 2017, Benatar and Maffucci arXiv:1708.07015 established an asymptotic law for the variance of the nodal surface of arithmetic random waves on the 3-torus in the high-energy limit. In a subsequent work, Cammarota arXiv:1708.07679 proved a universal non-Gaussian limit theorem for the nodal surface. In this paper, we study the nodal intersection length and the number of nodal intersection points associated, respectively, with two and three independent arithmetic random waves of same frequency on the 3-torus. For these quantities, we compute their expected value, asymptotic variance as well as their limiting distribution. Our results are based on Wiener-Itô expansions for the volume and naturally complement the findings of Cammarota arXiv:1708.07679. At the core of our analysis lies an abstract cancellation phenomenon applicable to the study of level sets of arbitrary Gaussian random fields, that we believe has independent interest.
