Advancing Atmospheric Pollution Monitoring with Airborne THz Spectrometer

This study details the development and validation of an airborne THz spectrometer designed for real-time, remote detection of atmospheric pollutants. The platform couples a stabilized unmanned aerial system (UAS) with a high-resolution terahertz continuous-wave (THz-CW) laser source and detector, enabling flexible, in situ spectroscopic analysis of dispersed atmospheric vapours. This proof-of-concept investigation confirms the feasibility of UAS-THz-CW systems for spatially resolved environmental pollutant monitoring. The demonstrated capability of this terahertz sensor for remote, multi-component detection of atmospheric contaminants holds significant potential for advancing air pollutant monitoring technologies, providing a pathway for more effective and portable detection. This advancement can contribute to the necessary alert actions for minimizing contaminants impacting public and environmental health, thereby safeguarding human and ecosystem health.

Terahertz prototype for air pollutants detection

In this work, we propose a prototype set-up exploiting terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to investigate gaseous compounds. The system is portable and allows to perform remote measurements. We used the prototype to characterise for the first time in literature over a broad THz range, pure dichloromethane and chloroform, two pollutants known as very short-lived substances (VSLS) that strongly contribute to ozone depletion. The THz range allows selectively detecting their absorption lines related to the rotational molecular motion for which we also present the theoretical confirmation. Then, we investigate the optical response of a multi-component mixture achieved with the two aforementioned chlorine-based compounds mixed with two widely distributed volatile pollutants (acetone and methanol). For these first measurements, we developed the set-up specifically for laboratory condition in which the substances are directly injected into the gas-cell circuit. Finally, we modified the prototype to ensure that the ambient atmosphere is drawn directly into the gas cell via a long pipe and a suction system opportunely developed. The analysis of the mixtures in both laboratory and in-field conditions demonstrates that the prototype together with the approach employed in this work can simultaneously identify and quantify single components in the atmosphere. The results obtained open up new possibilities for the development and applications of an efficient portable THz-based sensor for the remote detection of multi-component environmental contaminants.

Deciphering hidden layers images through terahertz spectral fingerprints

Terahertz radiation enables non destructive, depthresolved analysis of layered artworks. This study demonstrates THz multispectral imaging ability to reveal concealed text beneath mockup of pictorial layers, reconstructing hidden narratives at varying depths through frequency domain analysis.Simultaneously, it maps pigment composition, providing valuable chemical information. Showcasing the power to penetrate and decipher stratified materials, this work establishes THz multispectral imaging as a crucial tool for unlocking hidden secrets and characterizing materials in Cultural Heritage artifacts.

Strong nonlinear terahertz response induced by Dirac surface states in Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator

Electrons with a linear energy/momentum dispersion are called massless Dirac electrons and represent the low-energy excitations in exotic materials like Graphene and Topological Insulators (TIs). Dirac electrons are characterized by notable properties like a high mobility, a tunable density and, in TIs, a protection against backscattering through the spin-momentum looking mechanism. All those properties make Graphene and TIs appealling for plasmonics applications. However, Dirac electrons are expected to present also a strong nonlinear optical behavior. This should mirror in phenomena like electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) and harmonic generation. Here, we demonstrate that in Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator, an EIT is achieved under the application of a strong terahertz (THz) electric field. This effect, concomitant determined by harmonic generation and charge-mobility reduction, is exclusively related to the presence of Dirac electron at the surface of Bi2Se_3, and opens the road towards tunable THz nonlinear optical devices based on Topological Insulator materials.

Universal threshold for femtosecond laser ablation with oblique illumination

We quantify the dependence of the single-shot ablation threshold on the angle of incidence and polarization of a femtosecond laser beam, for three dissimilar solid-state materials: a metal, a dielectric and a semiconductor. Using the constant, linear value of the index of refraction, we calculate the laser fluence transmitted through the air-material interface at the point of ablation threshold. We show that, in spite of the highly nonlinear ionization dynamics involved in the ablation process, the so defined transmitted threshold fluence is universally independent of the angle of incidence and polarization of the laser beam for all three material types. We suggest that angular dependence of ablation threshold can be utilized for profiling fluence distributions in ultra-intense femtosecond laser beams.
