Inflation, Gravity Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking, and de Sitter Vacua in Supergravity with a Kähler-Invariant FI Term

We use a new mechanism for generating a Fayet-Iliopoulos term in supergravity, which is not associated to an R symmetry, to construct a semi-realistic theory of slow-roll inflation for a theory with the same Kähler potential and superpotential as the KKLT string background (without anti-D3 branes). In our model, supersymmetry must be broken at a high scale in a hidden sector to ensure that the cutoff of the effective field theory is above the Hubble scale of inflation. The gravitino has a super-EeV mass and supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the observable sector through gravity mediation. Some mass scales of the supersymmetry-breaking soft terms in the observable sector can be parametrically smaller than the SUSY breaking scale. If a string realization of the new FI term were found, our model could be the basis for a low energy effective supergravity description of realistic superstring models of inflation.

Constraining Liberated Supergravity

Fermionic terms in a class of locally supersymmetric theories called "liberated supergravity" are nonrenormalizable interactions proportional to inverse powers of the supersymmetry breaking scale and Planck mass. This property defines an intrinsic cutoff for liberated supergravities, which are therefore effective theories valid only below energies that never exceed the cutoff. Requiring that the cutoff exceeds current theoretical and observational bounds shows that the new scalar potential terms allowed by liberated supergravity can neither change the cosmological constant predicted by supergravity by any observable amount, nor give measurable contributions to particle masses. We show that it is nevertheless possible to define a simple liberated supergravity model of slow roll inflation valid up to energy scales that are well above the Hubble parameter during inflation and exceeds observable limits after inflation. The key to constructing a viable model is to change the supersymmetry breaking scale, from a Planck-scale value during inflation, to TeV-scale after inflation.

Cylinder transition amplitudes in pure AdS$_3$ Gravity

A spacelike surface with cylinder topology can be described by various sets of canonical variables within pure AdS3 gravity. Each is made of one real coordinate and one real momentum. The Hamiltonian can be either $H=0$ or it can be nonzero and we display the canonical transformations that map one into the other, in two relevant cases. In a choice of canonical coordinates, one of them is the cylinder aspect $q$, which evolves nontrivially in time. The time dependence of the aspect is an analytic function of time $t$ and an "angular momentum" $J$. By analytic continuation in both $t$ and $J$ we obtain a Euclidean evolution that can be described geometrically as the motion of a cylinder inside the region of the 3D hyperbolic space bounded by two "domes" (i.e. half spheres), which is topologically a solid torus. We find that for a given $J$ the Euclidean evolution cannot connect an initial aspect to an arbitrary final aspect; moreover, there are infinitely many Euclidean trajectories that connect any two allowed initial and final aspects. We compute the transition amplitude in two independent ways; first by solving exactly the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, then by summing in a sensible way all the saddle contributions, and we discuss why both approaches are mutually consistent.

Properties of Dual Supertranslation Charges in Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

We study several properties of some new charges of asymptotically flat spacetimes. These dual supertranslation charges are akin to the magnetic large $U(1)$ charges in QED. In this paper we find the symmetries associated with these charges and show that the global dual supertranslation charge is topological because it is invariant under globally defined, smooth variations of the asymptotic metric. We also exhibit spacetimes where the charge does not vanish and we find dynamical processes that interpolate between regions with different values of these charges.

Gravitational Wu-Yang Monopoles

We show that in an asymptotically flat space where an S-Matrix can be defined, dual supertranslations leave all its matrix elements invariant and the Hilbert space of asymptotic states factorizes into distinct super-selection sectors, labeled by their dual supertranslation charges. These results suggest that dual supertranslation may be interpreted as a redundant gauge symmetry of asymptotically flat spacetimes. This would allow to recast general relativity as a theory of diffeomorphisms possessing an additional asymptotic gauge symmetry. We then use the conjectured dual supertranslation gauge symmetry to construct a gravitational equivalent of the Wu-Yang monopole solution. The metric describing the solution is defined using two overlapping patches on the celestial sphere. The solution is regular on each one of the patches separately and differentiable in the overlap region, where the two descriptions are identical by virtue of a dual supertranslation gauge transformation. Our construction provides an alternative to Misner's interpretation of the Taub-NUT metric. In particular, we find that using our approach the Taub-NUT metric can be made regular everywhere on the celestial sphere and at the same time it is devoid of closed timelike curves, provided that the bound $\frac{m}{\ell} \leq \sqrt{\frac{5}{27}}$ on the ratio of mass to NUT charge is obeyed.

Kac-Moody and Virasoro Characters from the Perturbative Chern-Simons Path Integral

We evaluate to one loop the functional integral that computes the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories based on compact groups, using the background field method and a covariant gauge fixing. We compare our computation with the results of other, less direct methods. We find that our method correctly computes the characters of irreducible representations of Kac-Moody algebras. To extend the computation to non-compact groups we need to perform an appropriate analytic continuation of the partition function of the compact group. Non-vacuum characters are found by inserting a Wilson loop in the functional integral. We then extend our method to Euclidean Anti-de Sitter pure gravity in three dimensions. The explicit computation unveils several interesting features and lessons. The most important among them is that the very definition of gravity in the first-order Chern-Simons formalism requires non-trivial analytic continuations of the gauge fields outside their original domains of definition.

Comments on Lorentz Transformations, Dressed Asymptotic States and Hawking Radiation

We consider two applications of the factorization of infrared dynamics in QED and gravity. The first is a redefinition of the Lorentz transformations that makes them commute with supertranslations. The other is the process of particle creation near a black hole horizon. For the latter we show that the emission of soft particles factors out of the S-matrix in the fixed-background approximation and to leading order in the soft limit. The factorization is implemented by dressing the incoming and outgoing asymptotic states with clouds of soft photons and soft gravitons. We find that while the soft photon cloud has no effect, the soft graviton cloud induces a phase shift in the Bogolyubov coefficients relating the incoming and outgoing modes. However, the flux of outgoing particles, given by the absolute value of the Bogolyubov coefficient, is insensitive to this phase.

Regimes of Coherent Intermittency in the Next Quantum Jump of a Multilevel System

In an externally driven multilevel quantum system observation that the NEXT jump has not yet happened affects its future development. In previous work [Phys. Rev. A36, 929 (1987)] it was shown that this class of measurement makes it possible to observe remarkably long dark intervals -- or intermittency -- in the atomic fluorescence of an atom with 3 or more levels. Those calculations were carried out when the driven oscillations or Rabi flopping between the ground state and a strongly fluorescing state were fast compared to its lifetime. In systems with solid state Qubits the accessible parameter space is generally limited to the regime where oscillations are slower than the lifetime. In this paper we evaluate intermittency in atomic transitions, due to measurements with a null result, in this limit. During the dark periods the wave function of the continuously measured multilevel system is coherent.

Observable Supertranslations

We show that large gauge transformations in asymptotically flat spacetime can be implemented by sandwiching a shell containing the ingoing hard particles between two finite-width shells of soft gauge excitations. Integration of the graviton Dirac bracket implies that our observable soft degrees of freedom obey the algebra imposed by Strominger on unobservable boundary degrees of freedom. Thus, we provide both a derivation and an observable realization of this algebra. The conservation laws associated with asymptotic symmetries are seen to arise physically from free propagation of infrared modes. This explains in physical terms our recent result that soft charges fail to constrain the hard scattering problem, and so cannot be relevant to the black hole information paradox.

Soft Hair as a Soft Wig

We consider large gauge transformations of gravity and electromagnetism in D=4 asymptotically flat spacetime. Already at the classical level, we identify a canonical transformation that decouples the soft variables from the hard dynamics. We find that only the soft dynamics is constrained by BMS or large U(1) charge conservation. Physically this corresponds to the fact that sufficiently long-wavelength photons or gravitons that are added to the in-state will simply pass through the interaction region; they scatter trivially in their own sector. This implies in particular that the large gauge symmetries bear no relevance to the black hole information paradox. We also present the quantum version of soft decoupling. As a consistency check, we show that the apparent mixing of soft and hard modes in the original variables arises entirely from the long range field of the hard charges, which is fixed by gauge invariance and so contains no additional information.

Notes on Relevant, Irrelevant, Marginal and Extremal Double Trace Perturbations

Double trace deformations, that is products of two local operators, define perturbations of conformal field theories that can be studied exactly in the large-N limit. Even when the double trace deformation is irrelevant in the infrared, it is believed to flow to an ultraviolet fixed point. In this note we define the Kallen-Lehmann representation of the two-point function of a local operator O in a theory perturbed by the square of such operator. We use such representation to discover potential pathologies at intermediate points in the flow that may prevent to reach the UV fixed point. We apply the method to an "extremal" deformation that naively would flow to a UV fixed point where the operator O would saturate the unitarity bound. We find that the UV fixed point is not conformal and that the deformed two-point function propagates unphysical modes. We interpret the result as showing that the flow to the UV fixed point does not exist. This resolves a potential puzzle in the holographic interpretation of the deformation.

Shaving off Black Hole Soft Hair

A recent, intriguing paper by Hawking, Perry and Strominger suggests that soft photons and gravitons can be regarded as black hole hair and may be relevant to the black hole information paradox. In this note we make use of factorization theorems for infrared divergences of the S-matrix to argue that by appropriately dressing in and out hard states, the soft-quanta-dependent part of the S-matrix becomes essentially trivial. The information paradox can be fully formulated in terms of dressed hard states, which do not depend on soft quanta.

Effective Planck Mass and the Scale of Inflation

A recent paper argued that it is not possible to infer the energy scale of inflation from the amplitude of tensor fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background, because the usual connection is substantially altered if there are a large number of universally coupled fields present during inflation, with mass less than the inflationary Hubble scale. We give a simple argument demonstrating that this is incorrect.

On a Canonical Quantization of 3D Anti de Sitter Pure Gravity

We perform a canonical quantization of pure gravity on AdS3 using as a technical tool its equivalence at the classical level with a Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SL(2,R)xSL(2,R). We first quantize the theory canonically on an asymptotically AdS space --which is topologically the real line times a Riemann surface with one connected boundary. Using the "constrain first" approach we reduce canonical quantization to quantization of orbits of the Virasoro group and Kaehler quantization of Teichmuller space. After explicitly computing the Kaehler form for the torus with one boundary component and after extending that result to higher genus, we recover known results, such as that wave functions of SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory are conformal blocks. We find new restrictions on the Hilbert space of pure gravity by imposing invariance under large diffeomorphisms and normalizability of the wave function. The Hilbert space of pure gravity is shown to be the target space of Conformal Field Theories with continuous spectrum and a lower bound on operator dimensions. A projection defined by topology changing amplitudes in Euclidean gravity is proposed. It defines an invariant subspace that allows for a dual interpretation in terms of a Liouville CFT. Problems and features of the CFT dual are assessed and a new definition of the Hilbert space, exempt from those problems, is proposed in the case of highly-curved AdS3.

More on Long String Dynamics in Gravity on AdS3: Spinning Strings and Rotating BTZ

In this paper we study the classical dynamics of long strings in AdS3, generalizing our previous study, arXiv:1410.3424 [hep-th], to rotating strings and BTZ black holes. As in the non-rotating case, BTZ black holes are generated in the large tension limit, in which string back-reaction must be taken into account. When back-reaction is properly accounted for, collapsing heavy, physical, rotating strings do not generate naked singularities but only BTZ black holes, including extremal ones. The rotating string must contain world-sheet excitations in order to have consistent equations of motion; we describe such additional degrees of freedom implicitly in terms of an effective equation of state.

${\cal R}^2$ Supergravity

We formulate $R^2$ pure supergravity as a scale invariant theory built only in terms of superfields describing the geometry of curved superspace. The standard supergravity duals are obtained in both "old" and "new" minimal formulations of auxiliary fields. These theories have massless fields in de Sitter space as they do in their non supersymmetric counterpart. Remarkably, the dual theory of $R^2$ supergravity in the new minimal formulation is an extension of the Freedman model, describing a massless gauge field and a massless chiral multiplet in de Sitter space, with inverse radius proportional to the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. This model can be interpreted as the "de-Higgsed" phase of the dual companion theory of $R+R^2$ supergravity.

On the Central Charge of Spacetime Current Algebras and Correlators in String Theory on AdS3

Spacetime Virasoro and affine Lie algebras for strings propagating in AdS3 are known to all orders in $α'$. The central extension of such algebras is a string vertex, whose expectation value can depend on the number of long strings present in the background but should be otherwise state-independent. In hep-th/0106004, on the other hand, a state-dependent expectation value was found. Another puzzling feature of the theory is lack of cluster decomposition property in certain connected correlators. This note shows that both problems can be removed by defining the free energy of the spacetime boundary conformal field theory as the Legendre transform of the formula proposed in the literature. This corresponds to pass from a canonical ensemble, where the number of fundamental strings that create the background can fluctuate, to a microcanonical one, where it is fixed.
