Almost preserved extreme points

In this paper we introduce the notion of an almost preserved extreme point (APEP) of a set as a weakening of the concept of preserved extreme points, and we systematically study such points. As a main result, we prove that a Banach space $X$ has the Radon-Nikod\'{y}m property (RNP) if and only if every closed, convex, and bounded subset of the space has an APEP. Similarly, we prove that $X$ has the RNP if and only if the unit ball of every equivalent renorming has an APEP. We further investigate APEPs of the unit ball of classical Banach spaces, absolute sums, Lipschitz-free spaces, and projective tensor products. In the latter setting, our work also describes the preserved extreme points in the unit ball under the assumption that every bounded operator is compact, thereby partially solving an open problem.

Ergodicity and super weak compactness

We prove that a closed convex subset of a Banach space is (super-)weakly compact if and only if it is (super)-ergodic. As a consequence we deduce that super weakly compact sets are characterized by the fixed point property for continuous affine mappings. We also prove that the M-(fixed point property for affine isometries) implies the Banach-Saks property.

Applications of the quantification of super weak compactness

We introduce a measure of super weak noncompactness $Γ$ defined for bounded linear operators and subsets in Banach spaces that allows to state and prove a characterization of the Banach spaces which are subspaces of a Hilbert generated space. The use of super weak compactness and $Γ$ casts light on the structure of these Banach spaces and complements the work of Argyros, Fabian, Farmaki, Godefroy, Hájek, Montesinos,\linebreak Troyanski and Zizler on this subject. A particular kind of relatively super weakly compact sets, namely uniformly weakly null sets, plays an important role and exhibits connections with Banach-Saks type properties.

On uniformly convex functions

Non-convex functions that yet satisfy a condition of uniform convexity for non-close points can arise in discrete constructions. We prove that this sort of discrete uniform convexity is inherited by the convex envelope, which is the key to obtain other remarkable properties such as the coercivity. Our techniques allow to retrieve Enflo's uniformly convex renorming of super-reflexive Banach spaces as the regularization of a raw function built from trees. Among other applications, we provide a sharp estimation of the distance of a given function to the set of differences of Lipschitz convex functions. Finally, we prove the equivalence of several natural fashions to quantify the non-super weakly compactness of a subset of a Banach space.

Uniformly convex renormings and generalized cotypes

We are concerned about improvements of the modulus of convexity by renormings of a super-reflexive Banach space. Typically optimal results are beyond Pisier's power functions bounds $t^p$, with $p \geq 2$, and they are related to the notion of generalized cotype. We obtain an explicit upper bound for all the modulus of convexity of equivalent renormings and we show that if this bound is equivalent to $t^2$, the best possible, then the space admits a renorming with modulus of power type $2$. We show that a UMD space admits a renormings with modulus of convexity bigger, up to a multiplicative constant, than its cotype. We also prove the super-multiplicativity of the supremum of the set of cotypes.

Maps with the Radon-Nikodým property

We study dentable maps from a closed convex subset of a Banach space into a metric space as an attempt of generalize the Radon-Nikodým property to a "less linear" frame. We note that a certain part of the theory can be developed in rather great generality. Indeed, we establish that the elements of the dual which are "strongly slicing" for a given uniformly continuous dentable function form a dense $\mathcal{G}_δ$ subset of the dual. As a consequence, the space of uniformly continuous dentable maps from a closed convex bounded set to a Banach space is a Banach space. However some interesting applications, as Stegall's variational principle, are no longer true beyond the usual hypotheses, sending us back to the classical case. Moreover, we study the connection between dentability and approximation by delta-convex functions for uniformly continuous functions. Finally, we show that the dentability of a set is closely related with the dentability of delta-convex maps defined on it.

On strong asymptotic uniform smoothness and convexity

We introduce the notions of strong asymptotic uniform smoothness and convexity. We show that the injective tensor product of strongly asymptotically uniformly smooth spaces is asymptotically uniformly smooth. This applies in particular to uniformly smooth spaces admitting a monotone FDD, extending a result by Dilworth, Kutzarova, Randrianarivony, Revalski and Zhivkov. Our techniques also provide a characterisation of Orlicz functions $M, N$ such that the space of compact operators $\mathcal K(h_M,h_N)$ is asymptotically uniformly smooth. Finally we show that $\mathcal K(X, Y)$ is not strictly convex whenever $X$ and $Y$ are at least two-dimensional, which extends a result by Dilworth and Kutzarova.
