Unobstructedness of affine Gorenstein terminal toric fourfolds

We prove that every affine terminal Gorenstein toric variety of dimension at most four is unobstructed. In dimension four, the obstruction space need not vanish; instead, we determine the possible homogeneous obstruction degrees and construct simultaneous two-parameter deformations which eliminate the remaining potential obstructions.

Laurent polynomials and deformations of non-isolated Gorenstein toric sigularities

We establish a correspondence between one-parameter deformations of an affine Gorenstein toric pair $(X_P, \partial X_P)$, defined by a polytope $P$, and mutations of a Laurent polynomial $f$ with Newton polytope $\newt(f) = P$. For a Laurent polynomial $f$ in two variables, we construct a formal deformation of the three-dimensional Gorenstein toric pair $(X_{\newt(f)}, \partial X_{\newt(f)})$ over $\CC[[\bfTT_f]]$, where $\bfTT_f$ is the set of deformation parameters arising from mutations. The general fibre of this deformation is smooth if and only if $f$ is $0$-mutable. The Kodaira--Spencer map of the constructed deformation is injective, and if $f$ is maximally mutable, then the deformation cannot be nontrivially extended to a larger smooth base space.

Mirror Symmetry and smoothing Gorenstein toric affine 3-folds

We state two conjectures that together allow one to describe the set of smoothing components of a Gorenstein toric affine 3-fold in terms of a combinatorially defined and easily studied set of Laurent polynomials called 0-mutable polynomials. We explain the origin of the conjectures in mirror symmetry and present some of the evidence.

Deformations of an affine Gorenstein toric pair

We consider deformations of a pair $(X,\partial X)$, where $X$ is an affine toric Gorenstein variety and $\partial X$ is its boundary. We compute the tangent and obstruction space for the corresponding deformation functor and for an admissible lattice degree $m$ we construct the miniversal deformation of $(X,\partial X)$ in degrees $-km$, for all $k\in \mathbb{N}$. This in particular generalizes Altmann's construction of the miniversal deformation of an isolated Gorenstein toric singularity to an arbitrary non-isolated Gorenstein toric singularity. Moreover, we show that the irreducible components of the reduced miniversal deformation are in one to one correspondence with maximal Minkowski decompositions of the polytope $P\cap (m=1)$, where $P$ is the lattice polytope defining $X$.

Versality in toric geometry

We study deformations of affine toric varieties. The entire deformation theory of these singularities is encoded by the so-called versal deformation. The main goal of our paper is to construct the homogeneous part of some degree -R of this, i.e. a maximal deformation with prescribed tangent space T^1(-R) for a given character R. To this aim we use the polyhedron obtained by cutting the rational cone defining the affine singularity with the hyperplane defined by [R=1]. Under some length assumptions on the edges of this polyhedron, we provide the versal deformation for primitive degrees R.

Polyhedra, lattice structures, and extensions of semigroups

For an arbitrary rational polyhedron we consider its decompositions into Minkowski summands and, dual to this, the free extensions of the associated pair of semigroups. Being free for the pair of semigroups is equivalent to flatness for the corresponding algebras. Our main result is phrased in this dual setup: the category of free extensions always contains an initial object, which we describe explicitly. These objects seem to be related to unique liftings in log geometry. Further motivation comes from the deformation theory of the associated toric singularity.

Smoothing toroidal crossing spaces

We prove the existence of a smoothing for a toroidal crossing space under mild assumptions. By linking log structures with infinitesimal deformations, the result receives a very compact form for normal crossing spaces. The main approach is to study log structures that are incoherent on a subspace of codimension two and prove a Hodge-de Rham degeneration theorem for such log spaces which also settles a conjecture by Danilov. We show that the homotopy equivalence between Maurer-Cartan solutions and deformations combined with Batalin-Vilkovisky theory can be used to obtain smoothings. The construction of new Calabi-Yau and Fano manifolds as well as Frobenius manifold structures on moduli spaces are potential applications.

The Gerstenhaber product $\HH^2(A)\times \HH^2(A)\to \HH^3(A)$ of affine toric varieties

For an affine toric variety $\spec(A)$, we give a convex geometric interpretation of the Gerstenhaber product $\HH^2(A)\times \HH^2(A)\to \HH^3(A)$ between the Hochschild cohomology groups. In the case of Gorenstein toric surfaces we prove that the Gerstenhaber product is the zero map. As an application in commutative deformation theory we find the equations of the versal base space (in special lattice degrees) up to second order for not necessarily isolated toric Gorenstein singularities. Our construction reproves and generalizes results obtained in [1] and [13].

Hochschild Cohomology and Deformation Quantization of Affine Toric Varieties

For an affine toric variety $\mathrm{Spec}(A)$, we give a convex geometric description of the Hodge decomposition of its Hochschild cohomology. Under certain assumptions we compute the dimensions of the Hodge summands $T^1_{(i)}(A)$, generalizing the existing results about the Andre-Quillen cohomology group $T^1_{(1)}(A)$. We prove that every Poisson structure on a possibly singular affine toric variety can be quantized in the sense of deformation quantization.

Rank 2 ACM bundles on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds

The aim of this paper is to classify indecomposable rank 2 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundles on compete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) threefolds and prove the existence of some of them. New geometric properties of the curves corresponding to rank 2 ACM bundles (by Serre correspondence) are obtained. These follow from minimal free resolutions of curves in suitably chosen fourfolds (containing Calabi-Yau threefolds as hypersurfaces). Also the existence of an indecomposable vector bundle of higher rank on a CICY threefold of type (2,4) is proved.
